The one about the lucky ad hell dirt road isn’t a sin because roads are everywhere in the Praries. That’s why they are dirt. Because there are so many of them
Stock footage of channel 9 news of the past. I lived in OKC and that guy is Gary England of channel 9.... Best newsroom meteorologist ever and still doing it. But why? Its stock footage :3... Good eye, though
The fact they ran from an f5 tornado, with wooden fence panels flying everywhere and all kinds of different debris, and neither Jo or Bill managed to get so much as a scratch let alone a paper cut.....deserves all sorts of sins by itself.
"The entire rest of the gang showing up relieved and happy that the main characters are ok 10 seconds after the main characters' near brush with death" cliche
And if you watch the movie, you notice that their eyes are wide open, and they are even able to look up into the clear blue sky in the middle of the F5. I really doubt that they could have kept them open with 300 mph winds.
0:45 "Look at mid levels for rotation and increase the PRF" might sound like technobabble but it's factually correct. Mid-level updraft rotation in a supercell is one of the first signs of a potentially developing tornado, so it would make sense that Jo would want the radar scanning for rotation in that particular area of the storm. PRF (pulse repetition frequency) is a real Doppler radar term, it's the rate at which radar pulses are transmitted. When a supercell thunderstorm is close to the radar dish (as depicted in this scene), the radar would need to have its PRF increased in order to receive accurate wind velocity and rotation data.
@@indy_go_blue6048 Sadly I can't see the comment you're responding to. But, despite that sadness, I must admit, that is such a good question! Reading that with Kevin's answer made me laugh.
The deference: 1998 “God”zilla Good: CGI Bad: Godzilla doesn’t destroy anything. It’s all the military Twister: Bad: a “EF1” completely erased a well built structure *EF4* So realism Good: it has destruction and the destruction and a lot of the movie like the barn scene *even if I never saw the movie*
As someone who lives in Oklahoma and has witnessed countless tornadoes, I feel I need to add a couple things 1) It can be totally sunny on one side of a tornado. I've seen it happen. Sunny skies and then the tornado is on the front end of the supercell 2) A tornado is rated as an F0-F5 based on DAMAGE, not SIZE. They would have no idea what the rating of the tornado was until after the tornado was already over
@@indy_go_blue6048 It estimates the wind speed based on the damage. We can't empirically verify the exact relationship between winds and damage because obviously it's hard to directly measure it but we can use what we know about building construction, etc. to estimate what wind speed would be necessary to cause certain degrees of damage to certain structures.
@@chrisallie2224 You're a complete ass spending your time in youtube comment sections throwing shade for no clear reason at someone who had something relevant to say with respect to the video (something you have yet to do), more than likely feeling better about yourself for doing so...👌
To be fair, at 6:03, when this movie was made, people *did* encourage you to go under overpasses. It's only recently that experts were like "lol, no, don't do that"
Turns out, if you're lucky enough to have Superman nearby, he can dash over and save you from the overpass. Seriously though, what's wrong about an overpass, is it all the concrete they're afraid will fall on you? Is it better to be in your car, or lie flat on the ground
@@kbanghart The problem with an overpass is what they call the venturi effect. As the wind get channelled under the overpass because the space underneath narrows slightly (usually) it causes the wind speed(or pressure) to increase and be even more dangerous as a result.
@PepsiCanProductions I've never lived in tornado country, but just seems common sense that a bridge would be the very last resort, cuz the winds / debris blowing laterally.
@@user-pr4km1ey6t Pretty much yeah. Access roads all over the place, roads in between cornfields etc. Being from Nebraska and having been all over the midwest I can confirm they exist.
Bill Paxton *obviously* changed his own tire and put the spare on, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to drive to the garage; what the mechanic did at that point was to put a new tire on the rim, something you can't really do on the side of the road.
Technically speaking a tire still bounce and look ok but he could have broke a belt in the tire or could have partially debeaded from the rim especially of how the truck ran over those large guard rails.
Also, when they drove through the house, the stairs were turned upright, as if the house was sitting normally. Allowing them to drive up or down them. Either this house was built by someone with a sense of humor, or the continuity department didnt receive their paychecks that week.
Meh, the house thing is minor bc those scenes were full of action, and the house was tumbling. Plus, it was a HOUSE! Who cares which way the stairs go when you're driving through a tumbling house lol.
Or it collapsed because, y’know, the house it was in was literally ripped straight from its foundations. You don’t think at least something in there wouldn’t exactly be in its proper place after rolling like that?
This has been my favorite movie since it came out...and still at 14, I guessed the continuity department was never hired, sucked, or the same team the director used on Speed... That bus went through HELL and it had barely a scratch until the end when it blew up the plane....
@@Zephirah Storm chasers and meteorologists used their GPS coordinates to write Bill's name in Oklahoma. A great amount of storm chasers in this day and age have been inspired by "Twister." Similarly; storm chasers used their GPS coordinates to do a tribute to Tim Samaras along with his colleague Carl Young and Tim's son Paul Samaras following their demise in the El Reno, Oklahoma tornado on May 31st, 2013.
@@michaellovely6601Yes we did it for Bill & for Team TWISTEX on the spotter network's gps tracking system. It took planning to pull off with so many other chasers willing to join in.
I actually saw this movie when it was in the theater. It was pretty damned awesome on the big screen with the surround sound. Yes, the progress of technology is awesome.
It was an awesome movie then and still is I was probably 5 or 6 when it came out and we had it on VHS 85: a classic movie thats was watched so much the VHS and one DVD went to shit and we had to replace the DVD copy. I watch this movie on repeat.
"No one has crossed off one of the 5's on this sign yet" :D This was seriously one of the best EWWs ever :D "Go stop it? YOU go stop it"! I nearly woke the entire house more than once :D Cheers!
RIP Bill Paxton. This movie created a whole new generation of storm chasers. I loved this movie so much that Twister was my first DVD! I still have it too.
I agree with almost every point you made. Despite that, this movie was a hallmark of my childhood and got me into learning about weather and tornadoes, so despite its many many faults, I love it. It holds a special place in my heart.
In the end when the F5 didn't take the house was based on a true event where an F5 destroyed a hell of a lot of crap but the house still stood. Also the scene of the inside of the F5 was from a farmer who survived the inside of the tornado and told people what it looks like inside. Guessing Spielberg heard the story and added it to this movie. Also add a sin for tornadoes having a roaring noise like a dinosaur. And knock off several sins for how damn delicious aunt Meg's steak and eggs looked
In 1996, hiding under an overpass wasn't generally known to be a bad idea. A news team famously rode out the F5 Andover KS tornado in 1991 under one (though the tornado largely missed them) and it went nationwide. It wasn't until the F5 Moore OK tornado when people were killed heeding that faulty knowledge that people became largely aware of an overpass being a horrible shelter.
12:40: You forgot a sin Giant Tanker truck full of explosive fuel is dropped down and picked back up while light as hell in comparison 1/2 ton pickup stays firmly grounded Because RAM!
Don't forget that when that truck is dropped and they come out of the explosion the Ram's front windshield is fixed for about 3-4 frames before being broken again in the next cut
It kind of makes sense if you think about it. The surface area of a semi with a tanker on it is greater than that of a dodge ram. Although if it can pick up the semi it should pick up the ram. It's still a sin but rather inconsistent wind speeds from a tornado
Minus a few joke-sins you nailed it this time I'd add that the strong ass winds of all the tornadoes in this movie seem to selectively lift and throw around only the vehicles that don't contain any main character
I must strongly protest one of the "sins" you mentioned. The one about why there was a CB in the nice new red Dodge if he hadn't been tornado chasing. I lived in Oklahoma when this movie came out, and everyone I knew with a truck had a CB in their truck. You know, because of the sh*tty cell phone service you also brought up.
14:15 "It's not 'THAT' the wind in blowing, it's 'WHAT' the wind is blowing. If you get hit by a Volvo, it doesn't matter how many sit-ups you did that morning" ~ Ron White
For Sin 57 he says the storm chasers should know they aren't using a safe shelter (the bridge), but this movie came out in 1996, one year before the TV crew survived a tornado in Kansas by hiding under an overpass. So the characters in this movie wouldnt know that. The myth that bridges are safe during tornadoes led to overpass-related deaths during the 1999 Bridge Creek - Moore Tornado, which hit three freeway overpasses directly, killing one person at each. This is when hiding under an overpass was finally deemed not just unsafe, but the worst place to go.
The overpass video was from the 1991 Andover Kansas Tornado. They were lucky in that he tornado passed off to the side and the Underpass had accessible girders.
Most of the tornadoes in this were actually pretty damned good. The thing that broke the suspension of disbelief was the EF-5 at the end. The actual twister was incredible. The way the protagonists dance with it at knife-fight distance isn't. As you said, they should have been dead 5 separate times they were messing around with this EF-5. And then it just... dissolves. Big tornadoes don't just "go away." They rope out, and the rope stage can actually be more powerful than the wedge stage! Tightening circulation, increasing rotation velocity. And yeah. The scene with the pipes was probably the worst scene of the entire movie. EF-5 tornadoes are not gentle with their victims. "Violently dismembered" is the norm. "Granular human remains" is not uncommon either. And this thing was *filled with debris.* Not a fun thing to be pummeled by 2x4s going 160+ mph, not to mention all those nice sharp farm implements they showed one scene earlier!
@@JenMarAnnRei Thank you! I think they had, but the entire EF-5 twister was run on Rule of Drama rather than accurate physics. Not hardly the first or last time that Hollywood's done that - as a filmmaker once told me, they're not trying to teach physics to the audience, they're trying to tell a story, and EVERYTHING is going to be a part of that story physics or none. Bouncing tanker trucks whose explosions the protagonists casually drive right through, whole houses for the protagonists to drive through, combine harvesters weighing as much as train engines tossed hundreds of yards... EF-5s do weird things, but not THAT weird. Even the movie *Gravity,* whose director WANTED to use accurate physics, was forced to use Hollywood Physics instead when he realized 2/3rds of the dialogue were the characters giving physics lessons!
a few things...I live in Texas in Tornado Alley. I've also traveled through OK and can verify that in both states, dirt roads show up everywhere. Often leading to a field or somesuch. That "delicious" corn isn't the type grown for you and me, it's grown for livestock use. As for how it can be bright and sunny with a massive (or at least a F5) tornado right up ahead...it can't. It should be pouring rain and hailing like crazy. At least that close. I have been in tornadoes, or at least watched them go by. It's never been sunny either near or next to where the tornado is. I've also watched rotation that could have touched down (which is technically still a tornado) and actually filmed it. It was dark and had just been raining with hail about 10 minutes before. When they're on the ground, you get rain, but it's sideways and hurts like hell. I still loved this movie. True story: My now ex-wife and I went to Universal Studios with friends while I was on a business trip to Florida in '07. They have a "ride" called Twister. It's a simulation of this movie in which they actually make a small, thin, not-quite-F1 tornado inside the building. As a spectator, you're in an area that's like a roofed, railed, hallway kind-of area. You stand and watch the "show". No lie, when the tornado warning horns went off and the rain came down and the hail fell, and the "tornado" formed, I found myself unconsciously baking up against the wall behind us. I then noted I was doing it and looked at my wife and she was right next to me. I also noticed a few other folks who were back up against the wall just like us. Everyone else was lined up at the rail. Afterward, when the "all clear" was sounded we all noticed each other and started to sheepishly grin at each other. One fellow looked at me and said, "Nebraska." I said "Texas". Another lady said, "Oklahoma." and we all laughed. I then said, "That was a bit too real." They agreed. If you're ever at Universal Studios theme park, check out the ride. And if you're from Tornado Alley, just skip it, cause you've already seen it for real. :-) Cheers!
Agree. I was in Texas once, and saw a black horizon in the afternoon in summer. I remember thinking (excuse my language) "F**k this" and quit for the day (I was riding motorcycles cross-country) I've seen it rain on one side of the street, dry and sunny on the other side. :)
I grew up in South Dallas (Oakcliff for y'all DFW's) and yes many tornados can break out in one day but normally the sky blackens or it takes on a purple or green color. Once in NOLA on vacation a F0 ended coming down on me and my friend within 30 seconds of getting the tornado warning while we were getting on the on ramp. I had enough time to get the warning then look at the trees blowing hard side to side and think "Shit that's tornado winds!" Boom!
it can be bright out. If the hook echo in the storm is farther away from the storm, there can be bright patches of sky in the part of the storm that's farthest away from the core of the storm
I've seen the sun shining on a tornado funnel...complete with a rainbow next to it. Some tornadoes are completely "rain-wrapped" in precipitation. There is no rhyme or reason, but it does happen. Kind of depends on the time of day, as well. If the sun is at a lower angle close to sunset it can easily drop down and shine below the cloud base.
I had completely forgotten about that ride until you mentioned it, but yeah that was a pretty intense ride. I have never been in a tornado but I lived in Central Florida since I was 12 and have been in counties hurricanes so I can totally relate to what's it's like being in something as scary as a tornado or hurricane. I'm not sure which would be worse, tornadoes can be stronger with the winds but hurricanes last a lot longer so on top of wind there's flooding and storm surge
Even with its many flaws, I cant help but love this movie. It was the first movie my husband and I watched together when we started dating. We were both obsessed as little kids, him so much so he wore out his VHS tape.. he also storm chases in his free time now. Such a classic movie ♡
No, you really don't want to see one up close unless you're chasing and know what your doing. April 2011 my house was destroyed while i was in it by the Tornados that tore through GA and AL. It was crazy as hell, traumatized me a bit but I will admit narrowly escaping death is quite the rush.
hah, same.. but i wasn't scared of tornadoes, i was just scared of the roaring that the tornado at the beginning of the movie.. i had a dream that a tornado was about to kill me and i wasn't scared...
Actually, that's not entirely true. The reason why some supercell thunderstorms produce tornadoes and others don't is highly coveted information in meteorology. It's also elusive information.
This movie is now 23 yrs old and I still love it and have it. I consider it a classic, made by the same producers of "Jurassic Park" and "Speed" two more classics. Spielberg at his best. Too bad we have lost both Pax and the Dusty character from the movie. RIP.
@Katrina McCaffery: I was born in OK, it's way more advanced than people give it credit for; with that being said, Bill Paxton was an incredible person, R.I.P.
I love this movie so much i watch it once a year at the beginning of storm season. Storm chasing is the only thing i miss about living in tornado alley. Loved the review.
You could have taken sins off for 3 funny lines; 1) "Trust me. Rabbit is good. Rabbit is wise." and; 2) "Find this road. It's like 'Bob's road'." and; 3) "Cow. Another cow. Actually, I think that's the same one."
How about this one? Aunt Meg: "OK, I'll go to the hospital, but I'm gonna drive myself." Rabbit: "Honey, your car is in a tree around the corner." Classic😂
*Tornado chasers telling story of Bill's past. They get to part of him getting out of the car* "He's naked!" "He is butt naked!" "Not naked. I was not naked!" "...He's without apparel."
Admiral John he was he was getting a patch job on the tire that he ran over the pipes with cuz if you look at the rim the rim is actually the model that came on the truck the spare would probably have a different style Rim but you never see any other Wheels in the movie after he runs over the stuff
Realize I'm late to the party but that tire is aired up perfectly...it bounces when he takes it out of the back of the truck...a flat tire will not bounce.
I agreed with you until I paused the video, it is odd that the tyre is in the truck bed (Storage is underneath), but the tread design looks like a Goodyear Wrangler HT and the tyres on the truck are all a Goodyear Wrangler ATs. It is the spare, production overlooked the details.
Another thing that also bugged me was the time it took Bill to activate Dorothy at that jumping tornado vs the time it takes Jo at the end was soooo different
I also always wondered why they couldn't prep Dorothy any sooner than like 50 yards from the tornado. Maybe that's why Jo did it so fast...after the jumping tornado they were like "Damn maybe we could've flipped 285723 of the 285724 switches in advance, next time I guess"
@@JudeShimerprobably didn't turn things on sooner due to battery life on the unit. I imagine with all the sensors, computers, camera and various lights the batteries wouldn't last too long.
My 6 year old brother loves this movie, he watches it every night. I’m currently laughing hysterically because he would absolutely hate your guts right now 😂
I used to watch this movie around that age, I was obsessed with tornadoes (weird, given I lived in AZ, but okay). I watched it over and over. Great movie to become obsessed with.
Probably paid the thing off before leaving the lot so he only had to pay liability. I'd guess that any finance company would require full coverage before you took possession and he didn't want to pay interest to finance it. - Although if you're taking your brand new vehicle into the heart of tornado alley during one of the most active times of the year you must really have an invincibility complex.
Something else that's wrong. In the beginning of the movie, the father is saying that the tornado is an F5. That was 1969. F scale was used in the early 70s. At the end, the debris would have ripped them to shreds. Also, notice how they didn't lose their shoes or that head piece she's wearing. And yes, I've watched the move so many times, I can quote it. One of my favorites.
Big sin missed. In the opening, the date is 1969. The Fujita scale wasn't introduced until 1971. Jo's father says "it might be an F-5" as they seek shelter.
Here's a few that you missed: 1. The opening sequence takes place in 1969. While Jo and her parents are going down the stairs of their house, her father says, "TV says it's big. Might be an F5." The Fujita Scale was not introduced until 1971 and was not adopted by the National Weather Service until the late 1970s. 2. The first tornado that they chase should not have been able to obliterate that barn the way it did. It would have had to have been an F3 at the lowest, yet it is between an F1 and an F2. 3. When Dusty told Jo that the NSSL was predicting an F5, that actually can't happen in real life. According to the NSSL's own website, they can't predict the strength of a tornado. They only assign a rating after assessing the damage and wind speed after the storm has passed. 4. When Bill and Jo are sucked up into the F5, you can see their eyes are open. Considering how high the winds were within the funnel, there's no way they would have been able to keep their eyes open, the wind would have forced them shut.
Ultimately the choice is up to the patient. As long as they give a spoken statement saying they refuse care, no matter what state you're in they have to let you go. Unless of course your family members convince the staff you aren't of sound mind.
Neat! It was the first movie I saw in theaters when the bigger fancier surround sound was all the rage. I then proceeded to have a life time severe, paralyzing tornado phobia because I was quiet young at the time ...True story

Depending on their size, the debris within them, and the acoustics of their surroundings, tornadoes can sound like a train, a jet, rapids, angry animals, or even a swarm of bees.
Ive even heard one that sounded like a sighing hum. Well it wasnt a tornado but an extremely intense dust devil. Probably had 60, maybe 70 nph winds since it made even the sturdiest trees it hit thrash around unnaturally.
You’re right! That, and why on earth, when they were stuck on the tree towards the end, didn’t they PUT IT IN 4WD!!! Every time I watch this I’m just about screaming that at my screen

12:17 This was actually a good decision by the director and/or screenwriters. The most unstable atmospheric conditions are marked by intense sunshine alongside a storm. Also, tornadoes toss light objects and suck up heavier objects. This is why the sensors can't get accurate readings without Dorothy getting sucked into the funnel first. The sensors will eventually fly out of the funnel, but they will have been introduced into the center of one of the tornado's vortices by Dorothy, allowing them to get accurate measurements first.
4:36 The dirt was not telling him where the tornado will land, it was telling him that to storm was sucking in energy and was building quickly, thus, will be producing a tornado.
I feel that it is meant as a mother nature is pissed thing.. Like the old saying, dont mess with mother nature. Tornado's happen, and people die for a reason I think. Not trying to offend anyone but hey. Them putting the device in the tornado, is messing with her, and she comes after them for it.
The Nostalgia Critic had one of the funniest jokes when he did his parody of this movie, saying "why does it (the twister) keep following them? Do they have Tornado Treats in their pockets?"
12:22 they explain earlier in the movie that the sensors get blown away before they reach the center, which is where all the data is extracted. Great question though!

I actually took notes of this video to see if you actually did your research before making your claims. I can accurately back this up because I happen to be a Meteorologist and went storm chasing last summer. Sin 1 - That is impressive that you found that out. Sin 11 - Well they have the right to do that considering that the National Severe Storm Laboratory doesn't exist, so no one will take them seriously. Sin 20 - Why wasn't this piece of 25th century technology used when I went storm chasing last summer if it exists in 1996?! Because if there is, I want it! Sin 23 - Plus the warning time is actually 13 minutes, so you want to do all of this just to add 2 more minutes to that? That seems like a waste of time because 2 minutes isn't going to save any additional lives. Sin 24 - again, I want this technology! Sin 30 - Well the Weather Channel are more in for the profit instead of the science, yet they give the most scientific research since they have vehicles that can actually survive a tornado hitting said vehicles. Sin 36 - Storm chasers have additional persons on hand, just in case shit like this happens, because it does happen. Like for example, the vans that we used got decimated in a softball sized hail storm, and we were on the road the next morning. Sin 37 - Agreed. That storm damage was a overnight rush job and we paid a shit ton of money to get it fixed. Sin 42 - You do realize all of that technology was outdated 20 years before this movie was even released right? Sin 43 - Or radar?! Sin 45 - You are right about that one, sadly. Sin 46 - The name that we gave them were "booby clouds". That is not a joke, that is 100% legit. Sin 51 - or a bunch of chasers begging for the damn thing to touch the fucking ground. (Yes that annoyed me big-time) Sin 57 - Yeah, the Venturi effect would force anyone out of that bridge and die a worse death than normal. Sin 63 - There is a course for that. It's a Radar and Remote Sensing Lab that the NWS is requiring all Meteorology majors take. Sin 69 - "Too early for protagonists to die" cliche Sin 71 - Because that's how I reacted when I got back from the trip. You try living on Fast food and gas station snacks for three weeks straight. I couldn't eat at a McDonalds for several months without puking. Sin 74 - I know where this would be heading if we were in charge. "Get the fuck out of here, you dumbasses!" Sin 81 - For once, there's some realism in this movie. Sin 86 - You'd be surprised how quickly tornadoes last. Sin 95 - Plus, they should already be aware of it even if it formed quickly, because the NWS usually gives warning about 13 minutes before it can form. That gives them enough time to high tail themselves out of that place. Sin 102 - Unless you believe in that dumbass conspiracy theories that Kevin Martin gives out, you should never do that, ever. Yeah, there was no way that I was ever going to leave out the biggest troll ever. Sin 112 - Agreed Sin 114 - I wish... Sin 117 - Unless the amount of tornadoes that Twister had was 355, then no records have been broken here. Sin 118 - Actually you can stop tornadoes by blowing a fan at it. I know that this is overdramatic, but in a study that I did to see how tornadoes can fail, it seems like that could happen. Sin 121 - Actually tornadoes can form from a single cloud when the sky is clear all around. Sin 122 - It didn't work because it's a case of "plan to end movie early doesn't work" cliche. In reality, tornadoes do suck debris upwards. So let's say that this technology does exist (which I still want), then assuming that you know the exact path that the tornado is going to take, it should work. Sin 125 - I came to that very same conclusion. Sin 128 - That scene helped ruin the movie when I saw it with my family cause I just saying "bullshit" at it. There's no way that that could be that accurate in any situation involving a tornado. Sin 141 - They should already be dead, so it doesn't matter if they run or not. Sin 144 - THANK YOU!! Sins 9, 20, 22, 32, 58, 68, 84, 87, 96, 106, and 140 - The director thinks that the audience is stupid. Overall, you guys did pretty well. Just make sure when you do your sins video for "Into The Storm" that you do a little more research on these phenomena.
What makes you think the National Severe Storms Laboratory doesn't exist? Or are you quibbling about the "s" on "Storms"? They left out a lot of sins...........
***** Okay, I will admit I was wrong and that the NSSL does exist, and their goal is to collect data as a way to improve the accuracy and lead time of severe thunderstorms; however they don't give out warnings (That's the national weather service's job), and they don't dispatch storm chasers to accomplish these goals. They take information that was given by private storm chasers like the team that I was on, and they use archive data to improve forecasting techniques.
tapests Yeah. The NSSL is more about research while the SPC is about day to day forecasting of severe weather events and dissemination of that information to the public. They didn't used to both be in Norman. The SPC used to be in Kansas City.
***** Well, next you could try STORM CHASING (like, for real)! We consult the SPC's Convective Outlook page practically every day during the chase season.
9:55 The Joplin tornado in 2011 formed in under thirty seconds and was already almost a mile wide a minute into its life. Look up documentaries about it. Tornadoes that form like that DO exist.
Alot of people criticize the seemingly cartoonish and inconsistent nature of the twisters in this film but I think that represented their real life nature. Even when Bill and Jo strap themselves to the pipe and they live through it! Some people have lived through situations like that and weren't even strapped down or were thrown and were unharmed.
@@GCBN8 I was about 11 when the tornado ripped thru Greensburg, KS in 2007 and heard a story later about a guy who got out of his car to hunker in the ditch (like you're supposed to for those out of tornado alley) and got carried 2 miles away and dropped in a tree. He got up and tried to find his bearings when it came back and carried him back another two miles and dropped him again. Somehow he lived with only a few broken bones and his car wasn't touched.
The whole the sensors not working because they spill always pissed me off. I never understood why they needed the dumb trash can thing. All the power is in those little balls and nothing else. Thumbs up for that sin.
Well how where they gonna get the sensors to work and also there not gonna throw the sensors on the road and they need Dorothy prob for the sensors not to get damage and the information they get when into the core of the twister therefor it not a sin

keynan martinez dude it’s a classic. This guys channel is all about picking apart movies so you can feel smarter even though you’ve never made a movie in your life nor could make one so brilliantly. Or they think it’s funny..both are pretty retarded and pathetic.
You got something wrong during the scene with Meg's wind contraptions going nuts. She mentioned the sirens going off right as she was going down her stairs. If you listen closely, you can actually hear a tornado siren just going off half a second before the movie cuts back to the drive-in theater.
She had a tendency to play some pretty scary hot chick roles, tho... She comes across to me as more of a passive/aggressive girlfriend from Hell, esp her role in some other movie I can't remember. She's got the bod, but not the nod. (Well, ok, to be honest, she reminds me of my third ex-wife.)

As someone who lives in Oklahoma and has witnessed countless tornadoes, I feel I need to add a couple things
1) It can be totally sunny on one side of a tornado. I've seen it happen. Sunny skies and then the tornado is on the front end of the supercell
2) A tornado is rated as an F0-F5 based on DAMAGE, not SIZE. They would have no idea what the rating of the tornado was until after the tornado was already over
@ yay 🙌 4 u dickhead
But isn't the EF scale based on both wind speed and damage?
@@indy_go_blue6048 It estimates the wind speed based on the damage. We can't empirically verify the exact relationship between winds and damage because obviously it's hard to directly measure it but we can use what we know about building construction, etc. to estimate what wind speed would be necessary to cause certain degrees of damage to certain structures.

Agreed! I was a kid in the 80s( 90s teen) growing up Ohio. We were told to go under the overpass.

Bill Paxton *obviously* changed his own tire and put the spare on, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to drive to the garage; what the mechanic did at that point was to put a new tire on the rim, something you can't really do on the side of the road.
But why did that tire bounce? should be a sin for the director not deflating the tire before hand. It's literally a 30 second job.
Cody Opperman it may not have been deflated entirely (last i checked a properly inflated tire bounces higher than that at that height)
I agree sin should have been added for the suposed flat tire bouncing he obviously changed his own tire
That, or the mechanic patched it or something. Lol
Unless it was a blowout. I haven't seen this movie in years, so I don't remember.
Technically speaking a tire still bounce and look ok but he could have broke a belt in the tire or could have partially debeaded from the rim especially of how the truck ran over those large guard rails.

In the end when the F5 didn't take the house was based on a true event where an F5 destroyed a hell of a lot of crap but the house still stood.

Also in 1979 in Witchita Falls
Them : 🌪😵
Well said. You know what you’re talking about! They needed more consultants that knew the storms better.
Not to mention the debris would’ve destroyed them instantly, then they get in the barn and instantly it starts impaling the door.

a few things...I live in Texas in Tornado Alley.
I remember thinking (excuse my language) "F**k this" and quit for the day (I was riding motorcycles cross-country)
I've seen it rain on one side of the street, dry and sunny on the other side.

Actually, that's not entirely true. The reason why some supercell thunderstorms produce tornadoes and others don't is highly coveted information in meteorology. It's also elusive information.

Bill Paxton will always be my favorite tornado chaser.
This was a movie shown to us in class and I never thought I would love this movie so much.
Still one of my favorite movies up to this day.
I always thought it was weird that bill had “liability only” on a brand new truck.
Maybe they knew he was a storm chaser. No property coverage for you, pal.
He is probably the reason we now have to have full coverage on vehicles. Thanks dick!

"OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOklahoma where the wind sweepin down the plain"-Beltzer
Something else that's wrong. In the beginning of the movie, the father is saying that the tornado is an F5. That was 1969. F scale was used in the early 70s. At the end, the debris would have ripped them to shreds. Also, notice how they didn't lose their shoes or that head piece she's wearing. And yes, I've watched the move so many times, I can quote it. One of my favorites.
Big sin missed. In the opening, the date is 1969. The Fujita scale wasn't introduced until 1971. Jo's father says "it might be an F-5" as they seek shelter.
i laughed when he said "this tornado has better aim than any bad guy in every cation movie"

DoctorGTA I've seen you before lol
DoctorGTA.... Bill and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, have both died.
"Go stop it? YOU go stop it!"
I don't know why, but that line had me cracking up.
Here's a few that you missed:
Also paramedics do not have a say if a patient stays over night for observations, because, Doctors.
Shawn Lecrone plus she can deny going to the hospital bc ‘Merica
Ultimately the choice is up to the patient. As long as they give a spoken statement saying they refuse care, no matter what state you're in they have to let you go. Unless of course your family members convince the staff you aren't of sound mind.
Later that day the paramedics are still on the scene. Why didn't they hit the road to the hospital to "stay overnight?"
@@BrokenGodEnt Yep. You can go although they'll discharge you as 'against medical advice'...

You forgot a sin. Tornadoes sound like a freight train not an angry bear.
Fun fact: the sound designers for this movie slowed down audio of pigs oinking for the sound of the tornado. True story!

Aaah. Thanks for this!
Good point.

"Now you're just beating a dead dad." I laughed harder than I should.
Which could of not happened if he had a better lock or not near the door. Death by door.
In 7 years of tornado chasing, I've yet to see one 1996 Helen Hunt...
12:22 they explain earlier in the movie that the sensors get blown away before they reach the center, which is where all the data is extracted. Great question though!

As an elementary school student right after this movie came out, I can tell you that tornado drills were INTENSE! 🤣
(Yes that annoyed me big-time)
Sin 57 - Yeah, the Venturi effect would force anyone out of that bridge and die a worse death than normal.
Sin 63 - There is a course for that. It's a Radar and Remote Sensing Lab that the NWS is requiring all Meteorology majors take.
Sin 69 - "Too early for protagonists to die" cliche
Sin 71 - Because that's how I reacted when I got back from the trip. You try living on Fast food and gas station snacks for three weeks straight. I couldn't eat at a McDonalds for several months without puking.
Sin 74 - I know where this would be heading if we were in charge. "Get the fuck out of here, you dumbasses!"
Sin 81 - For once, there's some realism in this movie.
Sin 112 - Agreed
Sin 114 - I wish...
*****
No. They are two separate entities (and both real). Google NSSL.
They take information that was given by private storm chasers like the team that I was on, and they use archive data to improve forecasting techniques.
tapests
Yeah. The NSSL is more about research while the SPC is about day to day forecasting of severe weather events and dissemination of that information to the public. They didn't used to both be in Norman. The SPC used to be in Kansas City.
*****
Well, next you could try STORM CHASING (like, for real)! We consult the SPC's Convective Outlook page practically every day during the chase season.

@@indy_go_blue6048 they do sometimes completely stall and they don't always move very quickly.
@@indy_go_blue6048 they can stall completely, or they can move at highway speeds
That yellow Jeep truck is iconic!
Ok sort of see your point. But ( i may be wrong) they are flashing once they fall so they are all ready working or the red light is blinking. I'm not saying Dorothy is useless but for that particular scene they don't need to be in Dorothy. SO YES SIN.
Lizabeth90
I always took it that the little sensors sent their data back to dorothy which then relayed it back to the people.
When they strapped themselves to the well with that belt, i was saying to myself "Bullshit, even if they were to stay strapped on, the wind speeds of dat tornado would rip them to shreds or even rip their bodies in half with dat 300 mph wind speed"
