THANK YOU for calling out the extremely bizarre decision the movie made to explicitly state that most or all of the property destroyed was underinsured or uninsured, then antagonizing the only way these people could get *any* financial relief from their ruined livelihoods. I'm not saying I want big corporations purchasing up all the land, but when your opens are "take the money and move on" or "fail to rebuild due to the money you don't have" I'd take the former any day.
It was same with the human antagonists of _Twister_ also being designated villains who weren't doing anything remotely evil beyond, gasp, wanting to actually make money off their meteorology while not really screwing over anyone else. So at least the series--ugh--is consistent on that front too. Yay?

But it's so transparent that you can't really believe it.
Long term, it will lead to easier exploitation of the common person because they have to rent if nobody owns land anymore. And corporations aren't known for having a well-developed love of human rights. But why stick that in a dumb tornado movie?
When I watched it, the implication seemed to be that the investor supported their technology so he could be first on the scene, catch them while they were still emotionally vulnerable, and offer them much less than anyone would have offered later. But they do a terrible job of spelling that out.

Hilarious how Glen Powell's character here purposefully drives into tornadoes, yells loudly in livestreams, and shoots fireworks into tornadoes, and yet is still more genuine than Mr. Beast
I think he somewhat based of a real storm chaser named Reed Timmer who is very loud and does have a special truck called the dominator that he uses to drive into tornados he has a TH-cam channel highly recommend

The thing about the bad guy offering money for the properties of the victims... I loved that you touched on it. I get that the point is he's undercutting the price but when you look at the two groups and think which one you'd rather face in a tragedy... handing out free water bottles being the noble option is like a teenager wrote this lol
It's also worth noting that the money guy isn't giving them money right then. Those people could be waiting weeks or more before they see a dime of whatever the money man is offering. Food and clean water and clothes is much more important immediately after a tornado.

Yeah, I had a problem with that rodeo scene. They would have known two days before that it was going to be an enhanced risk day. Plus some of the street lights were still working after being hit by an EF-5 tornado. Bogus!
Yeah, the human antagonists of the first movie were always designated villains who weren't actually villainous, especially compared to the anger issues that (R.I.P.) Bill Paxton's asshole but "heroic" character had.
I think their point was they wanted to help people. Like the guy who sold the patent for insulin for $1 so everyone could have it but big pharma added an ingredient to get a new patent and charge $300+ per month. The just needed funding for the project and would share the results to save lives rather than being motivated to make a profit.
If they ever made a Nice Guys 2 Glen Powell would be a great villain in it. He's got great timing and could have an especially great dynamic with Gosling's character IMO
My head canon is that the main lady from this gets sucked up into a tornado, but instead oof being sent to Oz she gets sent to Tatooine so decades later she can say “Storm’s coming, Ani.”
Twisters and Oasis are back + WWE going back to TV-14 , 90s Gen X nostaglia is in full swing! Though the less said about the new Crow movie, the better!
It’s actually fairly accurate, with some exceptions of course. A lot of the tornado science, even the images shown on the radars etc are spot on. Killing a tornado? Plausible in theory, not on how the movie executes. Biggest problems are that Oklahomans don’t need storm chasers to tell them what to do during a tornado and they would never be surprised by a storm the way the people at the ball game, rodeo and El Reno were. They’d be watching the weather all day long every day during an outbreak like this. Only 10% of buildings in OK have basements so that’s accurate. Empty Pool being a safe place… also accurate. Get low with barricades around you. Debris is the biggest danger then. Twisters is far more scientifically sound than the original… but it’s far from perfect.
I love that what they kept from the first movie is the idea that if a tornado kills someone you care about, the answer is to try to ... kill tornadoes.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Seen it twice in the cinema so far and I’m probably going to watch it again this weekend. Can’t wait for the Blu-ray release date.
Y'all are struggling to find complaints about this fun movie that's actually better than the original and I grew up on the OG one, but it had many problems that this movie resolves. Not sure I understand the issue with country music in a movie based in OK focused on storm chasers that grew up on a farm or were in rodeos. I loved that this movie represented the western lifestyle and wasn't ashamed of it. I never noticed that the two leads didn't kiss, but also, they weren't dating at all so y'know there's that. I don't think it really matters who the "land baron" was and his motives, the point was the female lead was leaping to conclusions without getting all of the information. When she realized the youtubers weren't charging new homeless for food and the stormchasers she was paired with were working for a land baron it changed her perspective on the love interest.
One of my favorite parts is how the movie addressed the whole sheltering under an overpass thing. People believed that was a good idea because of that famous video from the 90s of a film crew doing just that. They just got lucky.

They weren’t just handing out water bottles, they were feeding relief workers and helping clean up after the tornadoes hit.
Legitimate stormchasers stop the chase and immediately go into search and rescue mode.
