This is the game where Dr. Neo Cortex was at his most intimidating in the series. You couldn’t exactly take him seriously in the first game with the funny voice he had from Brendan O’Brien. Cortex spent most of his time in Warped being either cowed or possessed by an even greater evil. He was slowly slipping into goofy ness in Wrath Of Cortex and Nitro Kart. Twinsanity definitely cemented Cortex as a hugely comedic idiot villain ever since (which I do enjoy). But this game is definitely where you can recognize Dr. Neo Cortex as a terrifying threat (the holograms and Clancy Brown especially help)
Crash Bandicoot 2 was my *_VERY_* first Playstation game I have played, back in that time, I couldn't understand what the heck just happened on Cortex falling off a blimp, then today, looking at the final battle in Crash Bandicoot 1 ...it finally makes sense now.
I know people often like to think Crash was just easily tricked by Cortex, but I like to think that Crash only helped Cortex because he liked how shiny the crystals looked and wanted to keep them for himself for a collection. It helps give an explanation as to why he attacked N-Gin at least, Crash didn’t want his new shines taken away from him. XD
I remember my older sister and I couldn't understand most of the dialogue, we grew up in a noisy house lol. When I was little I asked her what the story of this game was about and she told me "I think Cortext is going to kill Coco if Crash doesn't find the crystals"
I think my favourite thing about this game is that you get a sense of how lonely and scared crash must have felt. Crash gets mysteriously teleported against his will into the dark warp room 1, being told to collect crystals from unknown areas of the world by Cortex's holograms, with Coco's transmissions getting cutoff as she desperately tries to warn crash. As the player, you feel Crash's confusion, not knowing whether cortex is the bad guy or if Brio is. Then once you make the unavoidable mistake of collecting the 25th crystal, you finally find out what's been going on and it's down to you to stop Cortex before he enslaves the world. It really put a lot of weight onto the final boss battle and made it super panicky, which I think the N. Sane trilogy missed out. Playing this for the first time as little kid on the ps1 in your bedroom with the lights off was truly the most amazing way to experience this game. 8:18 still gives me goosebumps now.
Same as a kid there was so much mystery with who should you trust. I felt Crash in Crash 1 had it tough. Fell off the window and washed in a beach. Had to to fight through 3 island go up the castle. All for Tawna who broke up with him.
I've always like how abrupt the games of the original Crash trilogy begin. The way this game starts is a perfect example of that; no introduction, no recap, just immediately starting with the end of the first game's final boss battle.
@@cuccamunga The fact that Tawna's nowhere to be seen despite the fact saving her was the point of the first game; Coco's apparently Crash's sister despite the fact she was never seen or mentioned in the first game; and the fact there are even more mutated animals running around despite the fact the Evolvo-Ray and original Cortex Vortex were destroyed.
