Remember when I said last video that university work should be dying down and my schedule would be going back to normal? Well we saw how that turned out :( In the two weeks I've been gone though there is now double of you, which is amazing, seriously, I'm eternally grateful just like the aliens from Toy Story. Unlike last time, this time however I'm serious, school work has finally died down a bit, no papers for the foreseeable future, so expect more videos soon! Like Saturday soon! I have a lot planned so stay tuned! :) Next video will be something about Dr. Maruki...
Also yes I used Q2 art in the thumbnail for a Q video, fight me

Since you got a 3DS, you should play the Yo-Kai Watch series of games. It’s like a child friendly version of Persona, but without the calendar system.

I got more hooked up with PQ2, but both are really good. They are very fan service, gameplay is fun specially because i feel it has a better variety of personas than the main games. Plus i LOVE their chibi desings and the fact ATLUS brought back my beloved FEMC.

I gotta play P3P first for FEMC and then I’m gonna do Q2 after. It’s a shame there’s no dub, that’s really gonna erk me too. But I’m sure it’ll be neat finally seeing the Phantom Thieves meet everyone, I’m looking forward to it

@@HeavenlyM P3P is great too (It's actually my preferred way to play P3). The no dub for Q2 isn't a huge issue. The only one's who's Japanese voices I actually don't like are Teddie (because he keeps saying his name at the end of every sentence. I'll take the bear puns thanks) and surprisingly Rise (her voice is trying to hard to be cute. She's my fav and no I hate something about her, thanks Atlus West)

@@mj_player6440 Yeah I’ve heard Rise’s Japanese voice and I don’t like it too much but I respect it. She really does talk like a J-Pop idol, that’s for sure lol. And yeah I think I’ll like P3P a tad more than FES as well, party control will be nice, I also don’t mind the whole visual novel layout.

They really are worth it for the interactions alone, I agree. Q1 had some annoying gameplay decisions but I started Q2 recently and am loving it. Some other people in the comments on this vid warned me that it’s story was worse than Q1 but so far I’m enjoying it the most for the addition of the PT but most especially FEMC as you mentioned. It’s awesome having her around

I got this and p5 around Christmas, and dropped q for 5 at around halfway through the third labyrinth. I restarted about 3 months after I beat five and went through it and imo its really good, it definitely picks up later in the story. (the finale of the fourth labyrinth and next parts are the best) The music is naturally incredible, and although others may have gripes about how some characters seem to have been dumbed down to one trait I found the interactions charming - seeing theo and Margaret having to deal with liz's bs is fantastic.

I've yet to start playing PQ, but watching this review as an Etrian Odyssey fan (the word 'fan' doesn't even scratch the surface as I have all EO games and finished them all at least once) I realise this game just breathes EO. The dungeon mapping, the turn based battles, taking requests and having a central place to heal up and do other stuff before venturing out. Yeah I'll definitely go Check this one out soon. As more of an EO fan (though I've only finished EO5 main game and halfway through EOX) than a Persona fan (was interested in the games, never really finished any of them all the way through) PQ is a blast so far! For one, the labyrinth themes were more appealing/unique. Alice in Wonderland, a group date cafe, a horror house, it was a great change of pace for the usual stock fantasy locations. I never got bored of exploring the labyrinths. Currently on the 3rd, the horror house and the atmoshere there is fantastic! I also like the maps here, the puzzles also requires much more thought in my opinion. I favour them over modern EO puzzles. The existence of actual characters also might've contributed to a few non-FOE puzzles too (one that springs up to mind is the timetable puzzle in the third labyrinth). It's the first EO game that managed to make me take notes concerning quests and puzzles.
Having characters that talked and interacted is pretty cool too. I'll admit some of the characters got on my nerves sometimes, but man, they really made finding dead ends at least a little bit of fun. The dialogue is hilarious and some of the character dynamics are heartwarming. The stroll option doesn't pop up as much as I wanted it too. Also the quests that doesn't involve going into the labyrith. They're fun just for the sake of watching the characters talk with each other. The flanderization doesn't bother me as much but it might be because I know nothing about the characters other than surface level plot points, but I could appreciate them just as an outsider.
The combat was... okay. But I DO NOT like the boost mechanic. Hitting weaknesses during mob battles have no significant impact. Free SP/HP costs is a good thing, but the fact that knockdowns are uncertain and your boost might get cancelled if your unit gets hit by an attack... It made me rely on panic circle to disable mobs and slowly hack them to death... It felt slow in all honesty. And yes, I had Ken on my team, but his SP is low a few casts of Hamaon/Mamudo would make him run dry. I honestly would've preferred traditional subclassing or something similar, finding good sub-personas to fuse to AND be able to inherit the skills I want just made everything too complicated. That might just be because I'm unused to persona fusion but eh. Also kind of bugs me that there's no turn speed modifier, but sticking agility rings on a character somewhat helps with that. I guess.
Sorry for the long post lmao. It's a good game, and it fills that EO craving inside me (I'm replaying EO5 in tandem with the game) somewhat.

    • @HeavenlyM
      @HeavenlyM  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Totally agree on boost. It’s better than having nothing, but it is honestly so annoying that All Out Attacks are RNG and that things don’t get knocked down most of the time. Enemies are so beefy in this game too, they have so much health and damage it seems compared to usual Persona games, it almost makes you have to have someone with instakill, or a sleep or panic circle (I did the same thing as you, btw lol). I haven’t started Q2 yet but apparently this is something they actually fixed in there from what I’ve heard, alongside a sharp instakill nerf.
Also it’s intriguing that you never really finished a Persona game, I feel like I wouldn’t enjoy the character interactions all that much if I felt like I was missing out on the majority of their character by not playing the game to the end. Flanderization as you mentioned is also incredibly prevalent, Teddie’s sole character trait isn’t being a perv in the mainline game, and Akihiko has other goals besides consuming protein every chance he can lol

    • @rainycchi7310
      @rainycchi7310 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@HeavenlyM For All Out Attacks, I had them pretty much guaranteed if 3-5 units had Boost. I was never really fishing for them, since I only had one unit that can exploit every weakness (Zen&Rei). Magic sucks in this game, which is pretty much an echo of EO games. Which sucks considering that almost all of the units in this game learn magic one way or another. And as I mentioned, I already know the basic plot of the characters and whatnot, so "being in" on the jokes wasn't a problem. And since I don't know that characters all too deeply, I could enjoy their interactions instead of getting made at the flanderization. Teddie is ass though, I wish he shut his mouth in PQ, though I know he isn't that bad in the mainline games! Aside from Teddie and Rei's (so far) one track mind, I enjoyed the characters, even protein-and-punch-stuff Akihiko. His interactions with Shinji helped somewhat. I'll probably hold my reservations on PQ2. Joker is nice and all but I don't really care about the PT nor the new characters. Juggling a large cast would also potentially make duplicate units (not that it's not fun to run with 5 tanks in base EO...), when you already have a lot of role-sharing in PQ. Glad to hear they apparently fixed the Boost system & nerfed insta-kills in PQ2!

  • @TheFifthWill
    @TheFifthWill 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I played and beat it. I liked how the labyrinths got even better and more addicting as the game progressed, although I did spend A LOT of time just staring at the map of the fourth labyrinth while I was scratching my head all confused. Drawing the map and the walls was also something that I liked. The only thing that left a sour taste in my mouth was the randomness of the final, final boss; my team wasn't built upon just steamrolling enemies with crazy buffs and multi-hitting attacks, and this boss definitely punished me for that multiple times. Haven't played PQ2 yet; I'll have to beat either Etrian Odyssey 1 or 4 before I get into that.

I know the main argument people have about the characters in this game is they've all been dumbed down to having one or two trades and having jokes and running gags based around this one trade and that it ruins them. I can see why people wouldn't like this, but I think there's a certain charm to having these simplified versions of the characters, which is a tradition for a spin-off series with our favorite anime, or anime inspired characters being turned into chibi characters. One guy I've seen who did a let's play of this and Persona Q2 doesn't seem to mind this, he just instead makes commentary comments about the shenanigans they get into as if he's just playing along with it, and this isn't like they've all been stripped down to OOC characters like in Teen Titans Go or the Disney direct-to-video sequels, I can tell that their deep character trades are still there.

to me, the coolest aspect that helps with the boost system is that sub-personas give you a boost of hp/sp that regenerate every battle. so between that + then boost reducing costs to 0, you can actually do the trash encounters in the dungeons while spending 0 net hp/sp! you just need a sustainable sub-persona. i LOVE this in q2 (haven't played q1 since i haven't played p3/4) + i rly wish something like this would come to real etrian odyssey because sp management is the name of the game there.

    • @mattkim96
      @mattkim96 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It’s true in persona q as well (My personal favorite of the two)! That plus Naoto’s group light and dark insta-kill spells, which are basically free because of sub personas and eventually have ridiculously high accuracy rates, make encounters perfectly tolerable in pq so you get to actually enjoy the dungeon designs and puzzles.

Here’s my ranking for all the characters in the game (Note- This does not take Ultimate Personas into account; you could honestly make a separate ranking for characters after they get their Ultimate Personas, because of how drastically some characters change):
    17:) Ken Amada
+ High Agility and Luck, allowing him to spread status conditions with the right Sub-Persona.
    - Lacks SP.
    - Kind of frail.
    - Outclassed at literally everything he can do with his base moveset (As an Elec magic user, Akihito and Yu have way higher Magic, and not much less Agility, although Ken does get Ziodyne two levels earlier than both of them, Teddie has better SP and learns Samarecarm a level earlier than Ken does, and Naoto’s mere existence trivializes him as a Light magic user).
    16:) Chie Satonaka
    + Decent stats all around.
+ Can hit extremely hard with the right investment.
    - Her SP is HOT, STEAMING, BACON-WRAPPED, DIARRHEA-TOPPED GARBAGE. In the early game, even her maximum SP may be too little to use Power Charge or Critical Eye with, forcing her to get a Boost to use them.
    - There are only two enemies in the whole game weak to Bash, she has to rely on Critical Hits to get them, making her super luck-based (Critical Eye helps somewhat, but you usually have to burn all your SP in one battle to use it, especially after it upgrades to Mind’s Eye).
    15:) Shinjiro Aragaki
+ Very tanky, with high Strength, Endurance, and Return From Yomi.
+ Marakunda can allow for some serious damage setups.
    - Poor Agility.
    - Very slow, making defense debuffs from Teardrop/Moondrop/Stardrop largely unhelpful, since they only last the turn the move is used (Unless you equip him with Bestial Roar/Dragon Cry).
    14:) Junpei Iori
+ High Strength and Endurance, making him sturdy.
+ Marakukaja can be great on some teams.
    - Poor Agility means he’ll miss a lot.
    - Death Chaser is hard to use until late in the game, courtesy of its HP cost.
    - Due to his low speed, the team could get too badly hurt before he can get a Marakukaja up.
    13:) Koromaru
+ Has the highest speed in the entire game.
+ Can serve as an effective alternative to Yukiko for Fire Magic use (Yes, Yukiko is way stronger, and has both the single-target and multi-target spells, but you may prefer to conserve her SP for healing. Plus, Koromaru is a lot faster, which can allow him to get quick finishes against certain foes).
+ Has Sukukaja/Masukukaja, which can be extremely helpful on teams with low-accuracy characters.
    - Outclassed to kingdom come by Naoto as a Dark magic user.
    - Frail.
    - His poor Luck means he can’t really get status effects off with his high speed.
    - Yukiko is the stronger Fire Magic user (Though, as I said, despite all of Yukiko’s advantages over him, like more power and the multi-target version along with the single-target version, Koromaru can be a good alternative).
    12:) Zen and Rei
+ Extremely versatile, getting buffs, healing skills, and one attack from every major element to use. This means they can secure a Boost in practically every situation.
+ Great longevity, being able to restore SP by walking around.
    + High stats all around.
    - Even with the “Card” passives, their damage tends to fall off a little in the late game, given their spells are light damage spells with no upgrades.
    - Their passive SP restoration isn’t always reliable; given it requires walking around, you could get stuck in another fight before you’ve restored all of it.
    11:) Teddie
    + Has Recarm.
    + Good SP.
+ One of the highest Luck stats in the game.
+ Unlike Mitsuru, he gets both Bufu and Mabufu as standard, making him a good alternative for standard exploration.
    - Outclassed drastically by Mitsuru in terms of power.
    - Extremely slow and frail, meaning he could get one-shot before he can get an attack off.
    10:) Yukari Takeba
+ Better for healing than Yukiko, given that she gets both single and multi-target healing spells as standard.
+ Slightly more bulk than Yukiko.
+ A very strong magic attacker.
    - Yukiko does literally everything else better (While she’s more frail, there are more enemies weak to Fire than to Wind, and more enemies resistant to Wind than Fire, Yukiko is faster, has a multi-target attack, and has better Luck).
    - Being bulkier than Yukiko is a REALLY low bar to clear.
    9:) Mitsuru Kirijo
    + Extremely high magic.
+ Has Mind Charge to supplement that extremely high magic.
+ Tentarafoo can help with supporting the team.
    - Has poor speed and Endurance, meaning she could get one-shot before she can get off her Mind Charge-boosted Bufu spells.
    - Due to Mind Charge’s high cost, she could easily burn through her SP too quickly.
    - Her middling Luck makes Tentarafoo somewhat of a gamble.
    8:) Yukiko Amagi
+ One of the strongest magic users in the game.
    + Gets a multi-target spell.
    + A good Luck stat.
    - So frail that she could get one-shot by a Shadow giving her a nasty enough glare.
    - Very slow, which is bad for a healer.
    7:) Yosuke Hanamura
+ Can sustain Boosts and conserve SP very easily with the combination of Garu and Jinpugeki.
+ Second-highest speed in the game.
+ For being so fast, he’s surprisingly sturdy.
    - Tentarafoo is nearly useless on him, given that his Luck is so bad.
    - Has to compete with both Yu and Makoto, who are both stronger, despite neither being as fast as him.
    6:) Akihiko Sanada
    + Very well-rounded.
+ His decently high speed allows him to set up Tarunda/Matarunda before the enemies can attack.
+ Both offensive stats are good, allowing him notable freedom with Sub-Persona usage.
    - While his Magic is good, his Strength is a lot higher, but he gets no physical attacks innately. This means he won’t be hitting for his maximum potential damage without help. (This, however, can be remedied in multiple ways. You can give him a St-Ma Reverse to make him a Magic attacker, give him a Sub-Persona with physical attacks, or do what I did and giving him a skill card for Thunder Smash late in the game. The latter two strategies are better in the late game, given his Ultimate Persona skill).
    - Death Counter is prediction reliant, despite being great in certain situations, and quickly becoming less of a gamble with time.
    5:) Makoto Yuki
+ Great at conserving SP with his combination of Gurentou and Agi.
    + Great Luck.
    + Good speed.
+ More damage potential than Yu, given that his Magic is higher than both of Yu’s offensive stats.
    - Yu is the better mixed attacker, given his offensive stats are closer together while still being decently good.
    - Yu’s innate use of Dekunda generally finds more use overall than Makoto’s Dekaja, due to more enemies inflicting debuffs on your team than buffing themselves (Though a lot of bosses like to use buffs, making Makoto the better choice there).
    - A bit frail.
    - Elec is a slightly better specialty element, given that there are more enemies weak to it and fewer enemies resistant to it than in the case of Fire.
    4:) Aigis
+ Orgia Mode. Just... Orgia Mode.
+ Beastly Strength even without Orgia Mode.
+ Possibly the best tank in the game, given her high Endurance and all of the passives she gets, like Swordbreaker and Life Wall.
    - Hard to use, given Orgia Mode’s cooldown (Being in the cooldown period can spell disaster in some situations, so you want to be absolutely sure you can end the fight quickly).
    - Pretty slow.
    3:) Kanji Tatsumi
+ Hits like a freight train.
+ His poor Speed gets completely erased by Bestial Roar/Dragon Cry.
    + Very bulky.
    - Annoyingly slow upgrades to his offensive skills (Seriously, by the time he gets his medium-level attack skill, the rest of the cast is getting close to getting their first heavy skills).
    - Terrible speed. While Bestial Roar/Dragon Cry can negate this issue altogether, it does come into play when you’re trying to set it up.
+ His awful Agility hinders his hit rate.
    2:) Yu Narukami
    + Extremely well-rounded.
+ Can sustain boosts easily with his combination of Zio and Raikouzan.
+ Dekunda is a great tool to have (Especially in the Evil Spirit Club, the game’s third dungeon, where it’s downright mandatory for survival sometimes).
+ Can mixed attack extremely well.
    - Outclassed by Makoto in some minor respects, like speed, Luck, and overall damage potential.
    1:) Naoto Shirogane
+ Great speed and Luck, allowing her to efficiently spread status effects.
+ Gets both Mahamaon and Mamudoon, allowing her to potentially wipe entire enemy teams in one turn. Although this makes her quite luck-reliant, a ton of enemies in this game are weak to at least one of the two, meaning you won’t have to fear missing all that much.
+ With boosts, Naoto can pretty much ravage anybody still standing with Megido skills.
    - Her base moveset makes her a poor choice for bosses.
    - She’s slow to upgrade her skills, but since Megido is so powerful, usually being the strongest skill you’ll have at any given point in the game (Except when you’re fusing the absolute highest level Personas), it matters little.

I think I spent 80 hours on my first run. While it was an okay time, the combat really put me off from trying the sequel.

I agree it can honestly be pretty frustrating. I didn’t mind not having one more, I just really hated how knockdowns weren’t guaranteed. You’d hit everyone’s weakness and they’d only sometimes get knocked down and only sometimes get an AOA. I’d be fine with Boost and no one-mores if enemies got knocked down and we could get consistent AOAs like we can in the main games. Also SMT4 is the next 3DS game I’m getting actually, never played SMT and heard it was a good entry point!

@@HeavenlyM I should have gone more in depth with my complaint. You most certainly summed up how I felt.
I want to consistently down enemies, I want consistant all out attacks. I don't have to have once more but it would be nice.
All in all, it was a good time, if a little tedious at points. Scary dungeon had the most annoying puzzles to figure out as well.
Pro tip for smt4; look up a guide when figuring out where to go. The game will tell you to go to a place... but that's it. It gives you no waypoint, marker.... nothing.
It made it much more enjoyable when I actually knew where to go instead of running all over the world map constantly entering wrong areas. It wouldn't be so bad, but the encounter rate is EXCESSIVELY high.

I love Persona Q and Q2! But sadly they aren't cheap here in Germany... I am wishing for the one day to come, where I can get a cheap american or german version of either game!

I found a solution😁 Both persona q's are on sale for 10€ each in the Eshop, I may not be a fan of digital games, but I'll make an exception if it's saving me 80€

Yeah I didn’t know they never got distributed there, but surprisingly the physical copies in general are expensive so yeah, I’d definitely go digital this time

It's a pretty good game if you look at it as an Etrian Odyysey game, it's alright as a Persona game. Both series are good, Etrian Odyysey is just the best series to go from into the Persona Q games (Though some basic P3 P4 knowledge and P5 something is required for a full experience)

Not exactly, since you need to take affinity into account, if a Persona's compatibility with the user is "worst," they can't use them. Though there is still definitely a large variety of Personas that each character can take on.

No, some characters can't use certain Personas. Which counts for the two protagonists too.

I recently tried it myself and... pfff. I can't be bothered with it, honestly. I enjoy the dialogues and the interactions between such great characters, there's a lot of fanservice but, dude, the mazes kill me: they're just way too boring for me. I wish it would have being a persona 3-onwards playstyle

I liked the combat, it was neat and interesting. I already grinded through 200+ floors of Tartarus, I like that Persona Q changed up the combat a bit. But yeah it is a lot of combat, it reminds me of The Answer in that if you don’t like fighting you probably won’t like it as you’ll be fighting a lot.

I played this game twice. Well, kind of.
I got to Inaba Pride Exhibit in my first playthrough and just couldn't stand it so I ended up dropping the game.
Then I picked it up again and finished it.
