    Car dealerships can be very profitable depending on the types of customers they sell cars to. You can either be the type that gets ripped off at the dealership, or you can save a lot of money with an understanding of how car dealers make money. Just like any business, car dealers need to make a profit, but not to the extent that you have to pay full-price for everything. I’ll cover how car dealerships rip you off and these include the service/parts department, the price of cars and trades and the financing office. So if you’re buying a car or you need service done, this video is all about saving you money at the dealer. Enjoy and please share!!

      Always use the CU. Got a 2013 Jeep GRAND Cherokee for 18k, insurance gave me 4k, put that down on the truck, made it 14k CU gave me 4.7% with 48 months, paid it off in a year and a half with extra payments

      But the dealers can actually do better interest rates if they feel like it.

      My last car, the salesman kept coming back to payment numbers, I simply told him "I know you can make the payment anything you want -- just finance it over a very long period. Let's talk price, I'll let your finance department see what they can do, and if the payment is acceptable, I'll buy the car." The secret? I had financing in place through my credit union, so I knew what my maximum payment would be anyhow. Turns out their finance department could get me a better APR, so I walked out paying LESS than I expected :)

  • @RealLifeMoney
    @RealLifeMoney 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    We definitely live and learn. I learned that every single warranty, like you mentioned, is not always necessary. If you are able to save more than what the part would be worth then the warranty wouldn't make sense. Same thing with the financing. Its good for credit, but we should always be putting something down for the loan.

    Some dealers charge exorbitant fees for filing for titles and registration with the state's dmv. This is just another profit center for a dealer. Customers should insist that a dealer be very specific in identifying all fees that will be charged. This needs to be done before there is even a verbal agreement to purchase. Thousands are often left on the table trade-ins. Dealers consistently low ball the value by offering only "trade-in" value rather than "retail". They also downgrade the condition report even when the auto traded is in excellent condition. I'm a senior and I still learned the hard way.

    • @rabonahh
      @rabonahh 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would a dealer offer you retail on a vehicle youre trading in? That makes no sense, they have to fix up inspect and recondition your trade

    Solid advice, very well explained! Thank you for your help, Jason. I am studying up as much as possible before walking into a dealership to negotiate the best I can.
    Small point of feedback - sometimes I have to go back a few seconds to rewatch what you said, simply because the pacing of words is too fast. For those of us who are a little slow (lol me), making a few more pauses to let your point get across would help immensely.

    I liked something that isn't in these later videos which was present in the prior videos on negotiation (which causes a lot of anxiety for even the most confident). "Just do XXX and you will be just fine." You said that in most of the 2018 videos and I think it is a great technique, especially because it was repeated once at each of the points you were making where a person may have to do something they weren't comfortable with, or be aware that they are vulnerable during. Creating the "beat" of warning/reassurance is something I miss from videos like this one. I hope you consider incorporating it back in, I think it was very effective.

    Hi
    I' ve got ripped off twice big i mean big
    So I want to advice you that when you are buying a car never sign any paperwork until you check all this things
    1. When you choose a car that you like and when you are sure that that is the car you are going to buy alway take a picture of the price tug lacated on the car take two or more picture from close and far because they can chage the price on the paperwork for exemple if the car has a $12,000 price tug they can raise the price to $16'999
    And if you didn't check that the price is the same on the paperwork they got you.
    2 always check interest how much is the bank charging you and ask the salesperson if the interest is per year or for the five or six years
    And always ask how much total profit the bank is going to make on your purches or buying
    Ask the salesperson how much you are going to pay for everything during 5 or 6 years payments including the tug price of the car and the total interest or the bank profits
    Including the extra insurance that they make you buy
    And you can alway ask the salesperson to ask the bank to charge you less interes
    For exemple if the bank want to charge you 12% and interest you can ask the salesperson to ask the bank who acepted your credit to drop it to 8 or 10 % I 've ask them them And they have drop it down.
    Then after the salesperson has explained every detail about your purchase and you agree then you can sign the paperwork
    And if you don't agree you can deny it and walk away.the
    Also make sure that they show that they have added the dowpayment or trade in and don't let them pay you low money for your trade always ask for more

      Because he knew you might not were really interested in buying so he just turned his costumer to someone else, its happens and I’ve seen it when you start telling them that you dont want to pay full price or you want a discount or you are asking for every single car and dont seem committed to buying.
      Dont take it personal they live with that everyday its their job and besides having a younger guy as someone selling you a car with less experience its easier to grind to be honest so you can take advantage of that!

    I get the concept of getting ripped off at a car dealership, but they do need to make a profit to keep their business running. That said, my question is.... How much profit should a car dealership be making on a typical car deal? Obviously they will try and make as much as possible, but what is optimal for the buyer to pay for a car? 5%, 10%, 20% over price? Plus there’s extra costs from financing and dealership add ons but what is ideal for the buyer to be able to have the best deal?

    • @HonestFinance
      @HonestFinance  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s hard to gauge based on supply and demand. There’s always a point where the dealer will keep negotiating or not. And every car/situation is different because of how much they paid for the vehicle and how long it’s been on the lot.

    • @CelticsWin7
      @CelticsWin7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HonestFinance but wouldn’t there still be a way to figure the optimal amount? Obviously nothing is perfect, but it just sounds like a math equation for figuring out what the optimal amount should be? Just hypothetically let’s say supply and demand is normal across all vehicles. On you’re average car, do they markup the cars all equally? For example, marking them all up 10% higher the first day they put it on lot? Then for each week they reduce the price each by 2% just for example. I know I’m thinking to much into it but it’s gotta be some sort of a percentage based or based on making a minimum profit of a certain dollar amount or something. It seems unusual that they wouldn’t have some sort of structure to how they list the price based on the price they bought it.

Tesla has been actively driving down their prices to $35k to be more affordable to the masses. A strict money grab would be like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Rolls Royce, etc. Would you believe that the 8 year cost of Toyota would be substantially more expensive than that of a Tesla? Truth. ;)
