Intresting how i never really managed to listen to this masterpiece in game because someone mistook me for a pin cushion and kept trying to set me on fire
I mean, the impaler lives up to his name 😅
It's a shame, but in his defense, we are trespassing in the fancy house his mother bought for him and his gang.
Lol you made me chuckle. Please accept this like
😂😂😂this👏🏼
Messmer's the fight that made me love Souls all over again.
2:26 Aaaah?
2:32 Oaaa.
2:37 Holy that bass...
2:43 Aaaaaa-haa? HAAA!

I knew he had some snake related attacks but didn’t expected him turning into a freaking giant Titanoboa

I've played every souls game, and it is time to confess, Messmer is my favourite Boss ever.
he is my second after gael,FS cooked with this dlc
Lady Maria is my favorite tho she's to easy, mesmer is now tied to #1 for me and personally I found mesmer a tad to easy, but any more difficult and he'd probly be pure BS. He's a perfect boss overall
Super valid
I’d say that is recency bias, but Messmer is definitely up there. For me Gael and Isshin are still on a another level, but I’ll see, I just beat Messmer I still have a good chunk of the dlc left
Midra my absolute favourite❤ mesmer still on the top 5

Soon, Tarnished
@@muyahomite Wilt thou be taken in the jaws.. Of the abyssal serpent, shorn of light.
Isn't he reflecting on himself? How he was shunned alike the Tarnished along with his kingdom *"Oh lightless creature, embrace thine oblivion, as shall I"*
I think that “Embrace thine oblivion, as shall I” hits even harder
I like how this theme sounds more tragic than villainous. Fits his character really well.
Snakes live tragic lives.
Just going to eat? "Revolting creature uses venom. That poor prey item!"
Sleeping? "Look at the disgusting thing coiled."
Moving around? "The way it moves is so unsettling."
People go out of their way to hit a random rubber snake on the road and go out of their way to avoid a rubber turtle on the road. Tell me a creature more tragic than a serpent in this disgusting world of Man, I'll wait.
@@VultureXV 1: It's just a animal 2: It's literally the symbol of Evil.

He's a lefty in a fromsoft game, of course he's going to be tragic.
Pov:you spotted someone stripped of the grace of gold
This fight is truly a 10/10 it’s exactly the kind of fight I thought elden ring was missing
he is literally one of my 2 favorite bosses of all time.
@@Blackblade-NeXalways thought elden ring bosses were overrated compared to the previous entries but this one stands among the greatest they made
He has tempo which most elden ring fights lack. In fact the only 2 fights from the base game that feel good to fight are mohg and godfrey and the latter has too little health to enjoy the fight.
@@kurumigon8879 FACTS, when i got to phase 2 and saw his new attacks and abilities, i just sat and said YEEEEESSSS to myself. He was the one boss in the dlc i counted on being good and he sure is
This is my favourite fight of the dlc and 2nd favourite of the entire game. His 2nd phase cutscene and the music that follows is pure art.
“Mother Marika a curse upon thee” Marika stop using your kids as weapons please
Marika, probably: "If Greater Will wanted me not to use my kids as weapons, why He made them capable of nuking landmasses? Checkmate, atheists!"
I'm glad Ranni replaced her in my game lmao
Her vengeance knew no bounds. The story of Marika, her struggle, then what she went through to oppress her oppressors, even at the expense of everyone she loved, is brutal in the most beautiful way.
is this why radagon was turned into a sword
@@gegbag2666 ... No... Why would Messmer have power upon the Elden Beast lol. They were turned into a sword because they were basically just a tool for the Greater Will, who is basically the Elden Beast.

He definitely makes me wanna create a thrusting spears build and I'm usually not interesting in that 😂

The Tarnished is literally on a mission to marry the ex-wife of his Boss (Godfrey).
@@scythianrabbit3977 And if the Tarnished is a son/grandson/whatever to Godfrey, then you're just trying to marry your ancestor
@@scythianrabbit3977 Marika isn't simply his "Boss": She's his mother. He's a full-sibling of Malenia and Miquella - AND the "Messmer's Flame" confirms that Melina is a fourth sibling to them. That makes 4 Empyreans born of Marika and Radagon.
@@josephgoddard7438 Mind to explain where exactly this is stated? Also, you read the comment wrong, the guy you referred to did even write he meant Godfrey with "Boss".
Or new wife, if your Tarnished is a lady
if you listen carefully you can recognize Radagon's notes in this ost. I have shivers all over my body.
Well Radagon’s theme is titled “Final Battle” and is the main theme for Elden Ring itself. In a way it makes sense if those notes appear in Messmers theme as he is the face of the DLC. However, it makes you wonder if it’s intentional for something more. Perhaps this is ANOTHER offspring of Marika and Radagon. However, there is no clarification of this theory, since it was only mentioned that Messmer was “secreted away” in the Land of Shadows.
@@NemesisUmbralhe Is for sure a son of Marika check the shield of Mesmer found with a painting in the DLC
@@lorenzomanfredidesimone8526 Yes, I mean there is no evidence that he is Radagon’s child specifically. However, since Messmer shares semblance to Malenia it’s possible.
@@NemesisUmbral All, or most, of the children related to Radagon seem to share his red hair; Rykard, Radahn, Malenia, probably Ranni at one point. Messmer having the hair color I'd say is a pretty strong indication of his lineage
@@richardbarbaros5868 Ranni's original body has red remains on its head, possibly from her hair.
4:06 your really feel the tragedy here. Nowhere in the description of the items does it really show that he enjoyed the things he was sent to do, if anything the guy looks miserable constantly. Imagine being sent to do something and then doing it exceptionally only to be penalized for it. Marika abandoned and erased him from history just for doing the job she sent him out to do against his will and the even after all that he continued doing his job till the very end. His last word hold a lot of meaning when given context “Mother Marika….A curse…. Upon thee.”
Messmer has a personal motive for his crusade.
The hornsent stuffed Marika's people into jars to "purify" them. Marika became a god to avenge her village.
(As Leda said, they were never saints just on the losing side of war)
The shadow keep is built in front of Marika's village and there are living jars in the shadow keep (Presumably Marika's people)
Marika might have given birth to Messmer as a mortal and grew up witnessing the hornsent's cruelty. Item descriptions call Messmer the "son of Marika" not the son of Queen Marika.
@@Ratscracher That's MARIKA's personal motive, her reason for making Messmer do it, Messmer does it because his mother wants him to.
@@DatRealTom Messmer probably also hates the hornsent. Marika would've likely told him what happened to their people.
@@Ratscracher An interesting thing is Marika might not have actually abandoned him. There are 2 items the iris and blessing of Marika that shows she made special items to keep Messmer well healthy before ventually stopping. Thing is Messmer's crusade is weirdly close to the shattering.
Rellana is present which means its possible Marika sent Messmer there after Radagon married Renalla. Radagon leaving Renalla and becoming Elden Lord is the last big event to happen before the Shattering kicks off and Marika is sealed away, dooming Messmer to an eternal crusade.
He wasn't sent against his will. I'm pretty sure it is stated that he willingly assumed the role of monster, abandoning honor just to carry out the will of her mother without her getting directly involved. It's just that when marika realized that she would probably have to hide all these terrible acts away to keep her reputation cleam, and that messmers curse could very easily prove dangerous to her order, that she decided to abandon him in the shadow realm. He got betrayed by his own mother
Marika: "You are cursed and can not be allowed back in the Lands between, but be a good boi and purge all those bereft of light."
Messmer: "Yes mother."
Tarnished: *has been granted grace*
Messmer: "Oh ffs you have to be kidding me..."
Big "Really Mom? This loser is your new toy?" energy coming from our snakey boy
*"Oh lightless creature, embrace thine oblivion, as shall I"*
One of his saucier one liners.
oh god give me all the oblivion!
"Mongrel intruder"

I agree messmer is the poster boy for the dlc and was hyped up in that trailer we got. He looks, talks, and fights cooler than Radahn. Radahn is cool and menacing but let's be honest he had his time in the base game and lore messmer with miqula's power would've been cool kinda like Midra but with holy magic.
Messmer is not only an amazing boss in this DLC but his soundtrack suits him perfectly, he really lived up to the hype. I can see now why From Software was showing him so much.
he's the best fight in the entire game, sure Consort Radahan is a spectacle but this one is better to me, a truly completely tragic figure.

4:06 EPIC FIGHT INTENSIFIES
You can feel the darkness in this theme, it almost feels like you’re fighting Dracula.
Well that fits, as Dracula was also known as „the Impaler”
@@kobys5074that’s Vlad Dracula you’re thinking of (more widely known as vlad the impaler)
@@darkmatter9643 did you know, Dracula is based on the real Dracula? Crazy, i know
@@tl3143 Semi-based and that’s a stretch, Bram Stoker’s Dracula was a count in Transylvania, compared to Vlad Dracula who was king of Wallachia for about 7~ years.
In addition Bram Stoker’s Dracula was not known as “the impaler”, neither was Vlad for that matter, atleast during his lifetime (the first instance of him being referred to as the impaler was in the early 1500s, about 25 years after his death at the hands of ottoman sultan Mehmed II during his third reign).
Bram Stoker’s research notes for his novel (which were discovered after his death) revealed that he knew little of either Vlad Dracula or the history of the country he inhabited, instead relying on copying details from a travel guide to describe the landscape in which the characters travelled, Stoker had never even been to Romania when he wrote the novel, and Count Dracula himself bears little resemblance to Vlad the Impaler. In fact the most we know of the connection between the two is that in Stoker’s research notes he scrawled in large letters “Dracula is Wallachian for Devil!” (Funnily enough this was not the meaning behind Vlad Dracula’s name, instead it meant dragon, as Vlad’s father before him was a member of the order of the dragon, tasked with stopping ottoman influence in Europe).
It also has bits of Radagon's theme in there just like Radahn's consort theme. I love how all of his children share parts of his theme.
Messmer himself makes the dlc amazing for me. Fav boss of not only the game, but also any game.
Recency bias?
@@Axxxel_in_Harlem Nostalgia bias?
I fucking loved fighting this guy. Beat him with martial arts, one of the most fun fights I’ve ever had in this game. Easily favorite dlc boss, everything about him is just right.
I need to see that! 😊
My mimic took care of him instead, aint no way I’m soloing him
0:21 seeing him fly at me after the cutscene had me giggling with how cool he is
Messmer isn't only mechanically, atmosphere and presentation wise my favorite fight in the dlc with a extremely sick design and details (notice how the snakes see for him because he's blind or that his empty eye socket looks exactly like the Darksign), his lore also hits extra hard because he's loving his mother so much and did all these atrocious things for her, yet he has a kind heart and feels so much pain and loneliness because of marika, it's almost like he's so extremely tired because he can't be himself, he is shunned for his curse and instead has to slaughter entire cities. He fights against a huge burden forever for the person he loves the most, but she left him alone the same way malenia fights for miquella and is left behind by him in a completely broken and deranged state, also losing her sense of self, both are reminding themselves constantly that they are fighting for their loved family member while slowly going insane. I know exactly what it's like to love my mother unconditionally and be eternally grateful for the things she did for me and yet she hurt me, it's a heartbreaking story portrayed through this single character and I feel bad for him. This OST describes those feelings so beautifully, his pain, his tragedy, his strength, his willpower and him finally embracing his true self, revealing his true feelings and fragility as he dies by our hand.
10/10 Boss and OST, thanks for this absolute chad and beauty of a character fromsoft
It's even more interesting that Messmer seems to think nothing of his father. Seems like a such a strange thing to be so obsessed with Marika even though you share far more resemblances with your father, to the point where your lover is the sister of your father's ex-wife.
People it sounds similar to the main theme, I think it’s meant to mirror Radagon’s theme, since Messmer is obviously a child of his. Since messmer is the abandoned discarded child in the land of shadow, this theme mirrors are heroic light Radagon by being dark stormy and horrific.
"Soon, Tarnished. Wilt thou be taken in the jaws... Of the abyssal serpent, shorn of light."

His 2nd form the way he uses the snake to spawn in the middle is boss
This is literally the boss theme of bad parenting. Firstborn child being the victim as always 😅
Is this a variation of the Elden Ring's main theme in the first phase?
Not a variation I think but similar notes are chosen. Many franchises do this to show family relation or character relation. Since Messmer is Radagon’s son
HES THE BEST, HIS FIGHT JUST FEELS SO PERFECT AND BALANCED!
It’s like the fight with goldfrey except the action is turned up to 11.
A fast fight, sometimes even frantic. A visual spectacle. And most important: A fair fight. No bullshit 0.5-seconds windup button reading punishing moves.
Can't decide between this and Isshin as my favorite Soulsborne bossfight.
Comprared to other fights in the dlc I found him way more fun. His ranged attacks aren’t too fast, his normal combos are fun to dodge and have openings to attack after, and the snakes are awesome to avoid and have openings
After soloing messmer instead of summoning hornsent+mimic, i now truly feel the greatness of the dlc, messmer might even beat gael in terms of bossfight , lore and theme
Messmer, Midra, the Scadultree avatar and Romina are my favorites fight in the dlc because there is no bullshit. Every boss is fair. Divine lion or the final boss where just to bullshit for me
It really comes out in his theme but do you think Messmer realized just how similar to Radagon he was? The zealous adherence to erdtree fundamentalism, the sheer violence refined through dignity.
Yet it’s distorted or darkened even, showing the difference between Radagon and Messmers loyalty to the Erdtree.
Radagon was loyal because it was what he believed in. Messmer was loyal to Marika, and in the end he forsook even that and realised exactly what the Erdtree, the Golden Order and Marika were and how he was simply a means to an end
The god devouring serpent leitmotif in there
HE'S SO HOT
MESSMER DID NOTHING WRONG!!
Yup exactly the point
Best dlc fight that goes but to traditional dark souls style fight
This boss is so awesome that he is the only boss that didnt got me raging and shit i actually have fun fighting this boss because he is so fair unlike other bosses
Same, like 40 tries but still fun
i am probably wayy over 100 tries and i enjoy each death, he's just so much fun and i dont complain having to spend more time fighting with him
Yeah I did a bit hit run and I have say there not a single BS attack
it's not just me that thinks this theme is extremely similar to radagon's theme right?

1:07 and on had me in tears of how beautiful this OST sounded as I was dodging his burning spin move, followed with his multiple thrusts and the spears coming out of the ground
I saw a TH-camr say he heard Radagon's theme in here and I'm now realizing it's pretty much the same scale, just a little... different. Idk how else to say it
You can even hear it at 3:45
I think Radagon's OST is the embodiment of the Golden Order and Messmer's is a twisted version of it. Maybe because of his waivering faith. Maybe because of the Base Serpent
You can hear bits of Radagon's theme in all of his children's themes. You can also hear it in the elden beast's theme as well.
The last part of 2nd phase is absolutely peak omg
Edit: 4:06 onwards to be precise
O lightless creature. Embrace thine oblivion, as shall I
The entire time, the npcs made messmer sound like the big bad, it turned out he was the biggest victim, being a tool used for revenge against his own will, being abandoned by everyone he befriended his army cammander gaius, including his entire family because he was cursed by his own mother, except his aunt, rellana is the only person that never abandoned him, she left the full moon all for him
Rellana isn't his aunt because Renalla isn't his mother.

I finally proved that in a spear vs shield fight, the shield wins.
Reminds me of the Dark Souls 2 sound track, love it.
Messmer kinda reminds me of Genichiro.
His fight theme is amazing
When you start to piece together just who Messmer is, you start to understand why he is the way he is. Messmer was practically being forced to do what he was told by his mother Marika because of what the hornsent did to her people. Albeit, what they did was absolutely horrendous, but mass genocide just beought forth more problems. Im sure Messmer wanted to avenge his mother to a certain degree because of what happened to her people, but he mostly seens to be in a constant state of bedlam because of it. It's no surprise either considering he was abandoned, wiped clean of his image and name throughout the course of all history, and forced to be left on an endless crusade that willl only be over when his demise happens. Idk if Messmer ever took any pleasure in his endless slaughter, but from how i see it, it doesn't seem he liked it at all but he knew it was necessary so he just did as he was told by Marika. He too was also afflicted and cursed at birth like his siblings, and ofc it's no fault of his that he was born that way, which adds another layer of suffering on top of everything else, because im sure he's gottta be in some kind of great pain with the abyssal serpent taking temporary control of his being when he turns to a giant snake and with the winged serpents writhing throughout his body while he's slightly hunched over. It item description, it states that he despised his own flame because it was consumed by the abyssal serpent within him, which gave him a constant reminder of his affliction and that he'll only find release in death. At the root of everything, Marika is the sole proprietor of all her demigod children's suffering because, had she not done what she did from the very beginning leading up to the creation of the Elden Ring itself and and the Golden Order, the demigods wouldn't have done what they did either that would've made their suffering even worse. It was all a series of events that unfolded which would end in the death of the gods and the world and its inhabitants suffering because of the gods choices. We the tarnished are a good example of that. Being forced to go on a predestined journey to mend what needs fixing, coming back from death and not being allowed a true one until you fulfill this predestined fate.
Enough. I have endured more than enough.
Had no idea shadow keep was so huge...

I have to say Marika and Radagon third child Messmer is so badass and tragic doing Marika dirty work it a tragic demigod indeed
Messmer is actually Marika's oldest child just before Melina
@@yuki3927 Don't seem like that Goddrick great rune is pretty clear: The first demigods were The Elden Lord Godfrey and his offspring, the golden lineage. Godwynn was the firstborn and the only perfect Son, clearly marika same as the Erdtree lost the "blessing" to give birth to healthy children, same as the erdtree lost the blessing of abundance it had before.
@@dreadknight0Messmer was born of Marika and Radagon like Miquella and Malenia hence the affliction of the abyssal serpent, his red hair, and the Radagon motif’s in his theme. His birth occurred after Marika ascended to godhood and thus Radagon coming into existence. Messmer is basically a forgotten demigod because Marika feared the abyssal serpent within him. Messmer is the oldest demigod and the item description Messmer’s Kindling eludes to Melina being his little sister, making her the second oldest demigod.
@@ngriff6084 Yeah but the statue of marika in messmer's room shows her with 1 marriage armband, the others in the game shows her with 2 after her second marriage with Radagon, so she was already married with godfrey by the time she had baby messmer. I think Messmer and Melina are the first affairs of Marika with Raddagon, but surely not their first children.
@@dreadknight0 I just don’t see how that can line up with the timeline. Whenever a child is born from Marika and Radagons union it’s when the two are separate entities and are off doing their own thing (being the queen, being the champion of the Erdtree/marrying Rennala) plus with Messmer being the secret and heretical child I doubt she’d want to make it public knowledge that she had a child, a herald of an apocalyptic snake god no less, before she married Godfrey. She conquered the Land of Shadows before the Lands Between and we know she used Messmer as her instrument to do so. Unless there’s something else I’m missing the cryptic item descriptions and unsubstantial hints we have in game evidence that Messmer was born first to genocide the Hornsent and dominate the Land of Shadows after Marika ascended before she abandoned him and left to the Lands Between. Then again FromSoft lore is nothing but guesswork so I could be missing a few details that say otherwise.
