  • In this video I clean up the Miata's engine bay a bit, both in washing and in swapping out the stock long tube intake in favor of a short ram intake using a 90 degree silicone elbow and a cone filter. Other Items you'll need are some 3/8 rubber tube from your local auto parts house and a 3/8 hose barb and union. I didn't link the cone filter because it's a little too big and there are better size options out there.
Leroy Engineering also has a great informative video about intake length and power differences. Check out this video about intake length.

I've been thinking about switching to a short air intake, think this video is a sign for me to do it. thanks for showing the process!

Yeah, I was on the fence about it for far too long, glad I finally did it. No problem!

Looks like I am too late to explain the intake: I have ran this set up before going ITBs, with stock ECU, no PS or A/C, and a full exhaust system with a cat, I ran at 126 WHP. This style intake works better for higher end power than torque. If you want optimal gains for mostly stock set up, run a large U-bend by the intake manifold, 21 inches in length.

Thanks for the info! I've seen the 21 inch U-bend intakes before with positive comments on forums. Maybe i'll give it a try in the near future.

@@thirdgengarage or go itbs lol. Either way I'm curious to see what's next.

it really is a negligible difference, the valve cover breather is to vent crankcase pressure, it does vent it back to the intake in a loop, but youre not giving it "unmetered" air per se if you vent it and block the hole in the intake. its more about a vacuum leak, which ive personally not seen an issue with myself running a short ram.

Yeah, Not knocking the breather filter, I haven’t heard of anyone having issues with them. It just seemed to make sense to me to keep it connected to the intake, wasn’t difficult and probably cost about the same.

    hot air intake

Leroy engineering proved that there is no notable difference in terms of performance between having 60º air and 90º air, at least on a N/A engine with no other performance modifications.
also as a side note, when driving, the engine bay of a miata renew it's air every 4 seconds, so its not that hot in there.

@@2seater_mx5 lol the air density would be not equal at 60 degrees and 90 degrees so how could there be no difference in performance? makes no sense
