  • This video contains paid product placement for Freewheel. The Giant TCR is one of the truly classic road bikes. The first model in the TCR series was created in 1995, and its compact frame design- borrowed from the mountain bike world- went on to influence practically every other road bike on the market today.
    Iterations of the TCR have regularly featured in our Bike of the Year tests, with a cheaper model winning the coveted award outright in 2018.
    For 2021, the Giant TCR sees a welcome change in design parameters, with overhauled tube shapes and an increased focus on all-round efficiency.
    BikeRadar’s Technical Writer, Simon, has chosen the 2021 Giant TCR Advanced Pro Disc as his long term bike to ride. In this video, he talks us through the new bike and his first thoughts on it.
    Tune in over the year to hear how the bike holds up long term, and any changes Simon makes to it.

    Yup, it's a beaut. Owned mine for a few weeks and I'm very happy so far, its handling and weight is just light years ahead of what I'd become used to with its Boardman predecessor. The ride is super smooth and everything just oozes quality. Great bike, thanks to Simon for the review, spot on.

    The fact that Giant makes their own frames in their own factories is, IMO, the biggest plus of this bike as it provides for a better QC environment. I'd love to own this bike!

    • @MrLuigi-oi7gm
      @MrLuigi-oi7gm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave Cash That is horrible! Especially because of limited availability due to COVID-19 production limitations. Are you sure it left the factory with that damage? Or could it have happened in transit? Did you purchase it at LBS? Could they have inadvertantly damaged the bike? I'm not looking for excuses for Giant. But, without knowing more it's hard to tell if this was an issue of bad QC on Giant's part or something out of their control after it left the factory.

    Good review Simon. It’s a bike I’d be interested in getting my son for road racing. You look quite tall, around 6ft? I note you may fit a longer stem. Would the M/L size still work for someone taller than you or is it going to start to get too cramped?

    • @bikeradar
      @bikeradar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You must have very good eyes - Simon is 183cm tall, so pretty much bang on 6ft. He's most likely going to swap the stem for a 120mm option.
      6'1" would be right at the top of what Giant recommends for a M/L, but a lot of it depends on your inside leg measurement. If you have longer legs, you'll likely need a larger frame size.
      If you're 6'2" or taller, Giant recommends a size L, and Simon says he would agree - you'll likely need a fair amount of spacers under the stem (unless you want a huge amount of saddle to bar drop), as well as a 130mm or 140mm stem, if you're much taller than 6'1" and go for the M/L.
      Hope that helps!

    • @robertpreato3891
      @robertpreato3891 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@bikeradar Over the many years of riding I have learned never to trust the manufacturers recommendations on frame size which is almost always based on height. Two riders of the same height can have vastly different measurements of inseam, sternal notch (torso) and reach, all of which affect bike sizing far more than overall height. I'm 6 ft tall but have a very short torso, and long legs. I also have relatively long neck which adds to my overall height but has nothing to do with bike fit. I ride a size Medium TCR and run a 110mm stem (shorter torso means I need the shorter toptube of the M). For anyone who is planning on spending $4-5k on a bike, it just makes sense to get a professional bike fit. Once you have your ideal set up dimensions you can apply this to any road bike and fine tune accordingly. That's why manufactures provide geo charts and why any serious rider should learn how to read them. It is so easy to get on the wrong size bike and ride it for many years never even knowing how much more comfortable and more powerful you could be with a better setup

    These are nice bikes, but am I alone in thinking that Giant prices are either going up each year, or they are removing features and putting them in the next level up?
    The 2020 Advanced Pro 1 used to have Ultegra Di2, now has plain Ultegra. My 2018 TCR had full RS505 hydro brakes, and the 2019 model had the ugly Connect semi-hydraulic system for the same price. There are similar compromises across the line (more expensive or fewer features).
    Is this just Giant, or are prices going up with other brands?

    Simon what is your body height? Why did you choose M/L vs L or M? And do you think M/L frame size on this particular model helps is achieving a more upright position and better handling compared to M? I have long legs with bidy height of 175cm and inseam of 87cm. I am stuck between M or M/L. Will be glad to hear replies on this comment.

    • @bikeradar
      @bikeradar  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Imran, Simon is 183cm tall and is within the M/L recommended height range (he also swapped the stem for a 120mm version).
      According to Giant's sizing recommendations, a M would most likely be right for you. If you go for a size up it will have longer reach and higher stack, and you may wish to run a shorter stem to compensate - this will have the effect of slightly speeding up the handling however. Simon says he generally prefers the slightly smaller frame with a longer stem for road riding, as he feels it makes it slightly more stable, but it's really down to personal preference.
      Your best bet is probably to go to a Giant dealer and see if you can test ride a bike or even get a professional bike fit - it's worth it in the long run to make sure you get the right size. 👌

    Can i make the cable fully intergrated by using different stem and bar?

    • @bikeradar
      @bikeradar  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question, but the answer is no, I'm afraid - there's no way to route the cables/brake hoses through the headset on a stock Giant TCR.
      If you're using a wireless/semi-wireless groupset, then that tidies things up significantly (as you just have the two brake hoses to route), but that's as clean as it gets.
      Cheers for watching! Simon

  • @TheSlurpeeMan
    @TheSlurpeeMan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Other than the saddle (which isn't necessarily an upgrade as much as it is personalization), I would swap to 28c GP 5000 TLs. Beyond that, it seems like a really competitive build out of the box.

      Kevin Graham Agree, but keep an eye out for if Conti have verified them on these specific hookless wheels. I know the 5000 have been designed with "hooks in mind" and it's not the thing you want to hope for the best.. Schwalbe Ones may be the other obvious option and seems better suited to hookless rims

  • @monoray3241

    Interested to know ride quality as I am looking at upgrading to an S Works Tarmac instead. I ride an Aussie model, Advanced TCR 0 (2014) Di2 which is extremely stiff, responsive and rough as hell on anything but the smoothest of asphalt. It rolls faster than most of my mates on DT Swiss alloys with GP4000s 25cc and descends superbly on rim brakes. But there is so little clearance between the rear and seat tube that a tiny stone chip or twig in the tyre will stick and bring it to a stop. Did I say the ride was harsh enough to feel a 2mm twig and every sprayed surface stone chip on a cycle/bus lane? So the love-hate do I trust another Giant dilemma is buy another TCR or a more high end bike? I don't race but still love a responsive bike for fast bunch riding and would value a big brand comparison as you ride the TCR.

I ran 25s up front and 28s in the back...best bike I have ever owned and if giant had chosen to integrate the wiring through the stem I would absolutely get the new iteration. • @johngwheeler
      @johngwheeler 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mayalman I have a 2018 TCR Advanced 1, and run 28mm Schwalbe Pro-Ones front and back. There is about 4mm clearance at the fork crown, and 4-5mm between rear tire and seat post. The 28mm tires are about 30mm wide and have plenty of lateral clearance - they are a bit tighter than optimal for height, but enough to be safe I think.
      I also had hoped for tidier wiring on the new model. Not a deal-breaker, though.

    Clearance for 32 mm? Based on the stock 25 mm tyres in the video, I'll believe that on the rear. In the front though, it looks like you might fit a piece of paper between the fork and 32s...
    As for the 105 drivetrain: yes, you wouldn't expect that on a 3k bike, but considering you're getting carbon wheels for that I'd say it's an even trade...

      Simon hasn't changed the tyres yet, but he says the stock tyres measure closer to 28mm (as he mentions in the video) and there's definitely plenty of room for bigger tyres in the fork. 🕺😉🚴

      Possibly... The next model up does have Ultegra and a built in power meter (which I think is what really adds value to that build)... But it's also £600 more, which is a sizeable chunk of cash, and not everyone will be willing to spend it.

      @@simonvonbromley3424 it's not much when you're forking out £2500-3500 in my view. Although you are right. but! the TCR advanced 1 disc is full ultegra for less again.(that's the bike i used to have, and the frame was still very light and stiff ) I beleive the grade of carbon used is actually the same on both the Adv & Pro but the Pro has the full carbon steerer & fork where as the Adv doesn't. Not 100% sure if it's different on this year's range. But even so I'd personally opt for a better groupset than a very slightly better frameset.
