Is anybody else SICK of the "Sonic the Hedgehog's stupid friends" narrative? Well, among the many characters in the series who have suffered terribly from this ridiculous false narrative, it's everyone's favorite fox boy, Miles Tails Prower! Games media and series detractors have been attempting to gaslight us for well over a decade now that Sonic's friends have done nothing but hold the series back. With some "journalists" even going as far as trying to say the Sonic Series itself was NEVER good! Well I'm here to confirm that is complete and total nonsense! And what better way to make my argument, than a TH-cam series going into insane detail on why each and every supporting Sonic character is important to the series?!
Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Metal Sonic, Gamma, Shadow the Hedgehog, Rouge the Bat, E123 Omega, Silver the Hedgehog, Blaze the Cat, Dr Eggman, and the star of this video, Miles Tails Prower, were all important characters. Crucial to the series, and, the deeper Shonen style stories from Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2, that fans are desperate to see make a return!
Of course, there are many more than the ones I've just mentioned, and we will get to ALL of them in time! But for now, let's take a trip to West Side Island and check in on everyone's favorite fur genius, Tails! With Sonic Prime, Sonic Origins and Sonic Frontiers just around the corner, let's first go back to a place and time where everything was perfect. And, bash on some terrible Tails takes along the way! Tails looks to be done justice in Sonic Movie 2. So let's analyze how that ties in to the games series.

I understand having a lot of characters in a series makes it hard to evolve characters over time, but it's really baffling how Tails took a complete 180 in character. He went from the heroic fox who proved himself to be able to go on adventures with his hero, to a Gen Z kid- stuck on his I-Pad. I think SEGA could do something really great with his character if they take his Miles Electric away from him. Seriously, that kid is addicted to that thing!
Are you serious? Tails was always a bitch. He cared more about sonic using his real name then making an actual difference. I'm guessing we grew up with different sonics?
Two words! Fan Backlash! People have bitched, whined and moaned so much about the character (tragically even when he was at his best) that the people at Sega have just thrown up their hands and gone "Screw it! Let's just not bother anymore! Let's just turn this character into what everyone thought he was in the first place! Annoying, useless and worthless!"
The source of the problem is actually rather simple.
Starting with Unleashed in an attempt to cut away anything from 06 do to being critically ripped apart did Sega retool the entire franchise to be focused on only the main character and the developer simple didn't care for or had any good ideas for what do to with a Character that wasn't playable (already an issue in parts of the Adventure era) and as Tails was considered to be to recognizable to be removed but no longer allow to be playable did the writers dumb him down into Mister exposition. Which also means that he no longer has a use for his heroic and independent character traits. (more over Unleashed for both Tails and Amy regressed them a lot to fill there old roles as "cute character to make Sonic look cooler by compassion" again ignoring any and all development these 2 have gotten since there introduction.
More over did Pontac and Graff got o have a major hand in the last decade worth of stories and there did know next to nothing about Sonic and were discouraged to do much research. So from there quick Wikipedia search there got that Tails is a boy genius and there were asked to write a more comedic story so generic boy genuine character it is. (Which is also why Tails seem to much different between the Japan written Forces and Unleashed VS the Pontaff written Colors and Lost Worlds. With Japan regressing Tails into a cowered while Pontaff devolving him into a bad version of the boy genius troupe)

Tails in Sonic x mostly season 3 is my favorite iteration. To me Tails doesn’t feel like a sidekick or protege. He builds amazing tech and commands a ship with Sonic to help save the universe. Cosmo and Tails had a interesting relationship and blooming romance (I know that they are kids but it’s wholesome and sweet with these two together. )Furthermore,she brings the best in Tails and emotional moments we don’t see in games. Also the final episodes with Tails and Cosmo made me cry. (I haven’t felt like that since we though when thought Shadow died. ) Tails had a lot of awesome and memorable moments that should be remembered. Tails became his own and surpassed Sonic in his own unique way.
Agreed, Tails in Season 3 of X is pretty awesome. He has his moments of self doubt, but on balance, he’s a bad ass! This video was more so from the video game side of things, but the cartoons will likely be covered in future!

Agreed. Tails is a straight up badass in Sonic X S3.
Despite Tails not being one of my favourite characters, I really respect his (very important) role in the franchise as you said: "He is not a sidekick, but a protégé". I really agree with this term because I never liked Tails as a "Robin-typical sidekick".
I always loved how his independence journey flourish beautifully in the Adventure games and I would like it to continue in Frontiers and future titles.

Tails Deserves Better I Think For Sonic Frontiers I Want Tails To Be A Playable Character And written Better

Where can I learn more about meta era? Or maybe you can give me a gist of it?
I have a rationalisation for the way Tails was portrayed in Unleashed that doesn't involve power-scaling. Dark Gaia's influence was able to negatively sway the emotional state of almost everybody at night. Chip made a point of explaining that Sonic stays pretty much himself because of his unwavering confidence but even then there are noticeable albeit subtle shifts in temperament between Hedgehog and Werehog which even the manual points out. We see this with other characters too like Amy who was powerless to stop the guy who was aggressively dancing with her when ordinarily she'd be more than able to fend off such an advancement. So for Tails to have some reversion back to scared little kid mode doesn't seem too farfetched with that in mind. Not like when he did the same thing in Forces, in front of an enemy he had already beaten once before.
A good explanation! If that’s the case, the game simply needed to do a better job of explaining it. The cutscene that immediately followed it would have been a great place for Tails to say something along the lines of “I don’t know what came over me. I just felt really strange and afraid around those creatures.” Thanks for sharing your point 🙂

Another thing to keep in mind is that he was outnumbered and surrounded. Also, one of them was 3 times the size of him.
I really hate how all of the characters are being so underutilized in this Meta Era, but the fladerization of Tails' character is such a tragic case. He's been by Sonic's side since day 2. Seeing his character arc in Adventure 1 and his AWESOME characterization in Adventure 2 just makes you feel so good. But ultimately, I think that's why we love these characters so much. The way they were written and the relatability we felt in their struggles. They mean something to us and a lot of others.
And it's channels like yours Ace Card Gaming, as well as Chaomix, Al the Boi, Characters-in-Depth and Game Apologist that remind me that there are still people out there who care about this franchise and it's future, and gives me just a small sliver of hope that maybe this franchise could be what it used to be, if not BETTER if they would just TRY. So to that, I just wanna thank you for giving me that hope and good luck to you! Stay way past cool!!👍🏿

After playing the Adventure games for the first time recently, it made me realise just how much they did Tails (among other characters) dirty. It sucks cause there was some really great writing and its been thrown away for these jokes and sideline roles in the Meta era. If Tails plays a role in Frontiers, I hope Ian Flynn restores his character cause I actually quite like how he's written in the IDW comics. You and Chaomix did a great video on this honestly!

I swear the ending of Sonic 2(the video Game) was just so emotional. It was the first example of how important Sonic’s friends are to him. Tails Saving Sonic was such a great moment and added more to 2’s narrative compared to the first classic game(not trying to diss The first classic game tho)

Adventure two is what tears me apart because of the goodbye to shadow even though it’s not really goodbye.
We can only hope our two tailed buddy can return as the secondary protagonist he was in the classic and Adventure era and expand on his growth. He definitely needs it!

It’s honestly sad Tails hasn’t been having as much development in the recent games. I’ve seen people try to defend him in newer games but they never give anything other than just claiming people are being whiny or whatever -_-

I know that discussing about Tails' character through years has been talked down to the ground at this point that it's not much of a surprise to be perfectly honest. Like I've seen so many videos about this same topic that I was expecting the same information to be shown. How the Meta Era portrayed Tails as he was flanderized and how the Adventure Games were the peak of his character.
The one thing that could've stayed consistent within Tails is that he is a loyal partner to Sonic and is able to help him out in any way he can. Despite the praise of Tails being independent has been talked a lot, I do not hear much about how Sonic and Tails' partnership being actually genuine and show how this affects their relationship. I always adore the best friend/brotherly aspect of Sonic and Tails because it's adorable and it showcases on how they were meant to be a strong duo from the beginning.
If the Meta Era couldn't keep Tails' independency development in tact, I was kind of hoping that he would still be a loyal partner to Sonic in a way like he was back in the 1990's. The dynamic is there, but it's just not genuine like it feels like the relationship is non existent. Like please, it's not hard to make a brotherly relationship be genuine! That's my biggest issue with Tails' character in the Meta Era and some moments in the Dark Age Era. Not just about Tails' character being flanderized on it's own, like I get it. But, this aspect about making the relationship of Sonic and Tails being less genuine. I adore the partnership of Sonic and Tails and it doesn't have to be too serious or too sappy all the time to make it a good relationship. The two are different in terms of personality, but they compliment each other while having a wonderful relationship that it is a shame that the games doesn't carry this relationship out.
Sonic Forces really could've had the potential to add stakes to their relationship. Like how Tails reacted to Sonic being tortured for 6 months and how he felt ashamed for not being able to stop the creature who was beating his best friend down like it was nothing. Certain situations like these can still have Tails stay true to his character, he can still show worry, but he doesn't let it take over his head whenever he is against the odds. Having moments to be in a stressful situation is not easy, and that's what I could've seen Tails as in Forces. He tries to take down the odds, despite failing and have settle moments of him worrying about stuff while not letting it get to his head. I've seen a fanfiction of a retelling of Sonic Forces that used Tails in a different manner and I thought it was heck of a lot better than what we got from Sega.
Flanderization happens to a lot of characters and I know that Tails is not the only acception of this because Knuckles and Shadow do seem to fall in that category where I love the character, but is disappointed to the flanderization. Amy got the flanderization too, but she is a character that I don't care for because of personal reasons. I see Tails as a loyal and cute partner to Sonic that holds a strong bond thanks to how they compliment each other for being different in terms of personalities and purposes. Not just a Tails that is just an exposition dumper, being a complete selfish jerk(Yes, Sonic Lost World Tails is just the worst depiction of himself...), and being a coward. I love Tails, but I just hate how they made him look like a pathetic coward with moments of just having no purpose.
I hope this comment is enough to explain my feelings about this topic and how I talked about a flaw that hasn't been talked about as much compared to the most common factor within Tails' character.
Tails is awesome and he is very smart and he shows that he is a loyal and true friend to sonic and he is important so I'm happy to see tails in sonic movie 2 and colleen is the best voice for tails!
16:31 it's not corny or overthinking at all. That's LITERALLY the entire point of Tails's arc in SA1 and SA2 to embrace what makes you special and make that become your strength

He teamed up with Dr. Eggman at the end of SA2, but becomes a lil bitch when he has to work with Eggman again. Yeah, Paramount Cares more about the Sonic IP than Sega

Excellent video as always! I feel that Tails and Knuckles should have been protected more in the recent games and their characters preserved given just how important they were in Sonic becoming the global phenomon he was in the 90's. Hopefully the renewed focus on both characters due to the movie will push Sega in the right direction and give them the character depth they need and had in the past.
tfw that "ipad thing" would be fine if the data gathered from it was ACTUALLY USED FOR STUFF.
No, seriously, speaking on even just Forces alone, the guy gathers readings and data when Sonic is beaten into the ground by Infinite, and then... those are just never spoken of again. At all. The game pretends Tails knew about the Phantom Ruby and snirks at Eggman for not testing his invention enough, but he himself was never shown working on the very readings he gathered from way back when, instead being shown to work on the highly-unrelated Omega.
Unleashed and Colors at least got that right, but those instead have the problem that the writers don't know how ELSE to use Tails, so they just completely attach him to it, rather than making anything interesting with it (for crying out loud, he's in a THEME PARK in Colors. Dude could easily be analyzing the very tech that makes up those boss stage cutscene arenas or even Tropical Resort itself and use said pad to interact with it further, but he doesn't, even though some kind of electric-like energy is literally everywhere there). Unleashed has it a bit better, but in every game since Heroes, those kind of out-of-character cutscenes just accumulated over and over, and by the time of Lost World, they were visibly so confused as to what they wanted to do with him that they decided to do the exact opposite.
I remember when it was pulled out in the IDW comics it was actually used in conjunction with other machinery, which makes sense since it itself is a portable machine, so coming up with AND providing an easier access to the man-to-machine language on the fly (heh) is exactly in line with the intellect Tails is supposed to have.
It's interesting to me because even as someone who enjoys Heroes and Generations, and likes Tails as a character, I think cool stuff could be done with it but just, isn't.
(Then again, that's what should be expected of writers who literally just took a Google search)
Tails is tied with Amy as my favorite Sonic character and held a special place to me as one of few video game characters I became interested in as a kid. I always saw his initial characterization as something any kid could follow, he could always keep along for the ride mixed with his mechanical skills, which was always represented through gameplay. I always liked the fact his Tail spinning resembled a spinning propeller, complimenting his skills as a pilot. I always felt Tails and Amy served similar roles in their earlier years, but with different characters and execution, both start out as the inexperienced newbies learning through their experiences with Sonic to develop themselves as people. Tails had skills he could use and knew how to help benefit Sonic and perfectly contrasted with him, while Amy starts off as the normal one with no skill that she had to develop on her own. Whereas Tails already had the skills, his interaction with Sonic was all he needed to PROVE that fact and he used to develop better.
When it comes to Sonic Adventure, I liked how his first scene is him testing his plane, showcasing how much time he spends getting better with his skills. Unlike later eras I appreciated how Tails was allowed to mess up or show insecurities about himself. Adventure 2 is by far where Tails peaked the most, I love how the game showed his equality toward Eggman's mechanical skill level and how even when Sonic is locked up Tails is already in action, ready to break Sonic out without even a say so or relying on Sonic's okay. He even stops by to save Amy, which proved he is capable of saving people the same way Sonic could. I always took the same lesson you guys described for Tails narrative arc the same way.
Heroes did plant the seeds for a decline, as he had a more childish attitude. But he was skill capable enough to tagalong the adventure and is an active player in help stopping Metal Overlord. For me, and I'll say it again afterwards Tails just regresses only further after I'd say Shadow (the game) he's only there just to be Sonic's info guy and maybe throw some tech in. Sure he participates on the adventure, but to me the narrative focus to other characters kinda overshadowed his importance (as well as other characters) which was always my issue when it came to the games post Heroes around that time, while they exceled at developing particular characters, it came at the expense of other characters, while the writers just threw them in there with a few personality traits (often inconsistent) just to have them by necessity and to me I never liked that. And sure Tails doing something to benefit the mission is FAR better than him being just a techno babble who provides exposition and is religated to sidelines guy. But to me his character and utility in gameplay should always be had and hand with each other, Tails gameplay in SA1 compliments his story arc, Tails gameplay in SA2 compliments his arc looking past the surface. Sure he's playable in Heroes and 06, but that's it. His character is just a tagalong otherwise who might provide tech support when his time onscreen is presented. The in Unleashed he just gets cemented to who he is now, his first introduction is him cowering to Gaia monsters.
And some might say "We he's never seen them before" you could apply the same to Chaos, but Tails was right there with Sonic. the 2010's era would just make him more passive to where in Sonic Lost World he gets taken out by a Badnik A BADNIK to the point Sonic has to grab him out of their gunfire. In Forces Tails was shown to be less valuable on the battlefield than Charmy Bee! You might as well have just replaced him with a Princess in another castle. In the scene where all the cast fights the Phantom Ruby illusions (hiiariously bad mind you) all of them are shown to use their abilities to take them out. Knuckles with punching, Shadow's combat, Silver with psychic powers, the Chaotix and their skills, Rouge's kickboxing, Amy with her Hammer, Omega shoots one, what does Tails do? He flies behind the rest of the group! PATHETIC! #NotmyTails
In terms of the Gaia Monsters, there were SEVEN new enemies, SEVEN!! That's a hill I'm willing to die on, you can disagree with me all you want, but I swear as God is my judge, I'm defending that Unleashed Gai scene until the day I drop dead, so fucking there.
@@obd9660 Firstly you're free to have your perspective, no need to get so on he defense over a simply opinion/perspective. Secondly as explained in the video the scene doesn't give context enough to justify Tails running off. Now lets say Tails had tried or they got to out of hand to handle, then sure I could suspend my disbelief. Plus it's not even like he has to throw hands with the monsters. It's just from what we see he just cowers away on first sight.
@@Surgemaster2012 I don't think we need context for the Unleashed scene. The creatures just appear out of nowhere, and Tails gets caught off guard by them.

He has a point about how Tails wouldn't run away from every new enemy he sees for the first time, but there's a difference between a robot and a creature of darkness.
Because power levels aside lets not forget, Tails just a little 8 year kid, and kids get scared which is of course fine and there's nothing wrong that.

Yes not gonna lie Tails got Character Assassination ever seen Sonic Colors and it got worse in Lost World and Forces and it not just Him,Knuckles is extremely Dumb,Shadow is nothing more than a Cash Cow,Rogue,Omega, Silver is a Afterthought,Cream and Vanilla are being Forgotten by Sega and so on and so on,I Hope and Pray that Tails ant the Rest of the Characters get more love and attention they deserve.
Ya know here's a weird comparison I was thinking for a while:
The 2010s was a decade full of unnecessary "reboots" and crap, and stuff filled with mostly bad writing. Also some nostalgic baiting for those nostalgic boners.
Guess what Sonic did that decade? *Bad writing and nostalgic baiting.* Not sure about reboots...maybe a soft one because everyone is dumb-downed for the dumb audience by the dumb people. Idk.
But that's just a theory, a game theory!
It wasn't just reboots and nostalgia bait, I've also noticed a growing trend this decade of people turning against traditional values of heroism in media and demanding heroes to be "more realistic" (AKA lazy, selfish, uncaring, etc). We have seen heroes that have gone from being inspiring by showing the best of us to cynical, jaded workmen who only do the right thing "because it's their job" all the while complaining about it, all in what seems to be an attempt to validate the everyday people in their decisions to be self-centered jerks (this would also coincide with a surge in romanticizing villainy).
I'm probably reading way too much into this, but I can also see some of that rubbing on Sonic as well. Sonic used to be this guy who loves adventure and going to new places, fighting off any crazy robot or monster along the way and always having fun, now it's always the same places and even in the rare cases it's a new location (Lost World) he hardly seems to care about anything.

Tails is actually my favorite sonic character besides Sonic. It's quite baffling to see one of my favorites in the series become a weak coward or a character that's just shoehorned into the background, just going on adventures with Sonic yet not doing anything to help.
For me it’s Shadow, Tails, and Rogue, but i also really like Sonic, Knuckles, Metal, and Eggman, but i honestly don’t hate many characters in sonic, really like at all.
I love tails and he has come a long way since the video games, the sonic animated series and now in sonic movie 2 so I'm excited to see tails and colleen is outstanding as the voice for tails and he really can fly with his 2 tails and the red tornado!
Same he’s a great character, and even though it’s just headcannon I think he’d be a really cool, and confident adult on Shadow, level of getting how things are.
This got added to the countless number of videos about how Sega has ruined Tails ( and I commented on almost all of them that I'm unhappy with how my favorite character is being treated )

@@hoseinbmr3449 I can remember when Sega were putting out Rise of the Wisps and when Mike Pollock was absent in the first episode I said to my friend that he was probably too busy working on bigger and better things, and given his absence in the second part, only for him to appear in episode 9 of the radio drama proved that. And even without visuals, episode 9 beat the first finale of ROTW into the ground as it came out the following day and actually allowed Tails to stand as an equal by Sonic's side, rather than being sat playing with that discount Wii U, as usual.
To be fair they need to fix the series, before the characters.
Counterargument: Tails needs to bring Sonic to locations in Unleashed because the Earth shattered.

A smart character is only as smart as the person writing them... So Tail's "intelligence" in the modern games really says a lot.
Tails is a wonderful friend to sonic from sonic 2 the classic game and he has grown for 30 years and I'm going to love tails in sonic movie 2 and Colleen is a wonderful person to be the voice of tails!🦊💙🎮😁
1:06 Seeing the transition from Unleashed to SA1 felt like a whiplash because I never quite fully grasped the concept of just how different Tails' character REALLY was between both games, _yikes..._ 😬 Poor kid, man...
Eyyy, Chaomix! Oh boy, I sure understand the little kid thing, I was that kid; but just to characters like Sonic, not real-life people 😅 Unsurprisingly, Tails inspired me to... try and be myself. It's a daily struggle, lemme tell ya... I am still in the stage of where Tails is, kinda. I haven't had my time to shine like he did at the end of his story in SA1.
Protégé is the PERFECT word for Tails, omg! Stealing it!
Also, side note, I don't know how to describe it but one of the cuter details I LOVE about Tails is the movement of his namesake. The way they independently move (or sometimes move in unison) is just... *chef's kiss* I know it's silly but I always found it be a mesmerizing animation, even since I was young. He's the only character with such a trait, as far as I am aware.

I don't know why it took me this long to realize Tails' humility is... non-existent. He's basically just a cowardly, duller version of Eggman; having a semblance of ego but not enough to make him exhausting. Still, it's is just a weird dynamic between him and Sonic. His timidity and age made his fears more justified. Now he just seems like he aged a bit but has no real reason to be afraid of things... Very bizarre.

How is Tails' depiction in 06 worse than his depiction in Heroes? Frankly, he's just as tacked on in both, but at least he gave _some_ level of contribution in 06 (distracting Eggman's robots in Dusty Desert, looking through Eggman's database to deduce Elise's death aboard the Egg Carrier caused the ruined future, detecting the chaos emerald in Flame Core, following the Egg Carrier and informing Sonic of its location, etc.), unlike in Heroes. Where he literally did nothing.
That aside though, this was a wonderful analysis for the character, and a great overview of why he's so valuable to the series. Though I feel like a lot of what you said you here was recited from your other video on Tails (I was actually a bit surprised how much I was able to predict what you were going to say as you talked about each game, lol). It's still nice, don't get me wrong! I just wish you went more in-depth on other stuff, like how you would've fixed, altered, or added to his lackluster appearances over the course of the series' history. I'm sure you'd have some fantastic ideas :)
Tails' role in 06, and the overall attitude towards him in that game, can pretty much be summed up like this.
"Look everyone, Tails is here! Remember him? He was that orange thing that used to follow Sonic around in the old games! Or something, I can't remember! He can help Sonic rescue Elise!"
"Ok, she's rescued! Now get lost, Tails! We don't need you anymore!"
"Oh wait, she's been kidnapped again! You can come back now, Tails! Yeah, he's gonna clack on a computer, spout some exposition, or whatever it is he does, I really don't care! He can have a few completely pointless playable moments in some hand me down versions of Sonic's levels to shut up his stupid fans (if there actually are any out there), but once Elise is rescued again, he has to beat it, so we can make way for the CG romance cutscenes with Sonic and Elise! Cos THAT'S where the real bulk of this story's drama lies! Not focusing on Sonic's stupid friends!"
"That's all he's really good for! I mean, he can't be a main focus in the story! He can't beat the bad guys by himself or do anything worthwhile in the plot, HE'S ONLY TAILS!"
At least that was the overall vibe I got from it, and it's sadly only gotten worse as time goes on. Sega are desperately trying to appease the "Sonic's stinky friends" crowd, as well as other haters and detractors of this series, but not it's actual fans!
You know that comment that its like Pontac and Graff don't know the characters? Well Roger (who you might know from Sonic Paradox's newer stuff) as part of his excellent Sonic Dissected series asked them upfront about that and they honestly admitted they don't and that they also didn't bother do any research on the characters either, so you're right on the money.
I agree that Tails' fall started with Unleashed, the only way I can see to explain it and keep Tails development, is Tails just has a fear of the supernatural in general but thats barely a bandaid solution. I do disagree that Tails should replace the Avatar though, as why would he need a hookshot? He can fly already, instead I think he should replace Classic Sonic. (removing that stupid retcon of Classic being a alternate universe version in the process) By using his development from SA2 Tails could and should be the leader and main person in action for the fight against Ivo.

Welcome to the channel. Your comment around the hook shot is fair enough, but the other abilities and weapons would have worked well. Allowing tails to use light speed dash or shoot fireballs etc. They were the abilities I was thinking when I made that comment.

To me Tails is my favorite character because I think of him as someone who is trying to be his own person and what I love about his character is him growing up from becoming someone who is that sidekick and for him to become his own person like and to become his own hero 💛

I know I have been accused in the past for supposedly having a "hate boner" for the American take on Sonic, but if the Japanese are writing the characters better, why should I have to lower my standards to give America a chance when they should be stepping up their game and actually writing the characters correctly.
Also meanwhile in the comics he's written to be a brave a courageous kid who can stand as an equal by Sonic's side. The same can be said for Emi Jones' Sonic and Tails R, which in its 10 episodes sees Tails doing more than he's done in the past 10 years of the Meta Era and not cowering before regular Egg Pawns he should be smashing without breaking a sweat like in Forces, nevermind Chaos 0.
Hopefully Sega remember Tails in the little fox cub who could and actually let him, and the other characters, off the bench and get a chance to do something again with Frontiers.

Good material about my favourite member of Sonic Team. That little fluffy fox kid was my inspiration to go out from shell and accept myself as i am with my pros and cons, he never give up so do i. Its a humble thing how now Sega treat him in games. He deserves more than be a nerdy Luigi clone that hie is now. I hope Frontiers will give him position that he have in Adventure Era/ Dark Era when he was not only a partner for Sonic but a Hero on his own

I actually like Tails’s portrayal in the Wisp Era (2010s) Sonic games except Sonic Forces.
He *is* a narrative compass, but he plays the role well and manages to make meaningful plot progression happen, especially in Sonic Colors where he was the reason Yacker could communicate with Sonic at all.
My favorite part of Wisp Era Tails was his relationship with Sonic.
There is a lot of brotherly familiarity in how they interact with each other, acting more like partners than hero and sidekick.
(if only Sonic actually let Tails help him tho)

He has already done so much more in the past and I think he could do even more in future if used properly.

It's interesting seeing this series for the first time, having just come off of Frontiers. I don't really have questions or counter-arguments just yet, but it gets me thinking...
I feel like that Tails after Sonic Adventure 2 got killed an by alternate version of him off screen (yup this is a silly Mandela Catalogue reference lol) who is very jealous of his bravery and courage. Therefore, he wants to replace him, but that alternate is still as weak and coward as pre-Sonic Adventure Tails, which would be the only head-cannon explanation that makes sense to me at least lol.
I find it ironic how Tails (the second main hero character to be ever introducted in the main games' series) is the first character who started to get ruined by the writers of the games right after Sonic Adventure 2...
The real issue with Tails' characterization (and just about every Sonic supporting character for that matter) is that so many people seem to have different ideas for how he should be portrayed. Just look no further than the different media's and continuities to see this.
Even since the early days, I've always liked Tails, but almost everyone I knew seemed to despise the little guy, almost with a passion! I remember someone even saying "No one likes him! Everyone hates him! Even SONIC doesn't like him!" Basically it was like they were saying "Sonic should hate Tails as much as I do!" I never agreed with that, but it felt like I was the only one.
Sonic the Comic was interesting because it was one of the first continuities I remember that actually saw Tails going from Sonic's sidekick to being more independent, long before Adventure did it. Whether this series did it well is another matter. The thing that bugged me personally was how Sonic constantly belittled him a called him hurtful names like "Pixel Brain!" Almost like the writers of this comic couldn't stand him either. Even as a kid, that never felt right to me.
In The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails featured in every episode, and even though they were really pushing the "little kid" angle, Sonic and Tails did have a cool camaraderie. Yet there were times when he was pushed aside while Sonic saved the day (there was even an episode where Sonic literally leaves him in a kiddie's ball pit), but at least there were some moments where he got to shine.
The same however can't be said for the SATAM series. In that one they REALLY pushed the little kid aspect of Tails, even going as far as putting him to bed with a bedtime story by the "adult characters!" Again, it just felt like the writers simply didn't want to give him that much screen time as they were more interested in their own characters like Sally. They also didn't have him as a technical genius and instead replaced him with another one of their own characters, Rotor the Walrus (and even he didn't get much screen time!)
Then there's Sonic Underground, which either totally ignored Tails because they didn't like him or didn't even know he existed! Either wouldn't surprise me!
Sonic X I always felt didn't do any of the supporting characters justice, mostly because it basically was just "THE CHRIS THORNDYKE SHOW....oh and guest starring that speedy blue... thing... I guess!" Sure he builds the X-Tornado, but that really just felt like it was there to give all the minor characters a seat when they're flying somewhere. They tried recreating the scenes from the Adventure games, but since Sonic and Tails barely share any screen time it just doesn't have the same impact as the original stories. Then in season 3 he falls in love with that plant thing Cosmo, but I just remember thinking "He's 8 years old! He should still think that girls are riddled with cooties at that age!" Even when he has to kill her to save the universe, I just personally didn't think that was something I'd want to see from Tails. Maybe I could imagine a character like Shadow or Silver having to go through a difficult and emotional choice like that, but not Tails. Even after that scene where he's crying his eyes out (and Sonic doesn't even comfort the poor kid, might I add) in literally the very next scene he's happy and smiling like nothing happened!
I can't really say much about the Boom series, as that just seems like the Teen Titans Go equivalent of a Sonic cartoon. Just not for me!
As for his portrayal in the newer games compared with his portrayals in the Adventure games, I guarantee you that there are people going "Nope! He was never good, and never will be! Forces totally got him right! Completely irritating, gratingly annoying, and utterly worthless! THAT'S TAILS! Sega should just get rid of him and just have Sonic!"
Update: I just saw the new movie. I remember hearing an early review saying that Tails' only real purpose in the story was to just spout exposition. And while that's... kind of true, he does at least have some good chemistry with Sonic, he flies around with his twin tails, he fights robots alongside Sonic (& Knuckles), he builds gadgets, he pilots a biplane, he basically does everything you expect Tails to do, and that's a huge improvement over his portrayal in Forces, that's for sure! And, the most important thing, the writers of this movie obviously didn't feel obligated to appeal to all the Tails haters out there, unlike the current game writers! It's really something Sega needs to learn from!
I never followed the series closely, only know Sonic from the Band cartoon and the anime. Also hate platforming games and the game felt purposeless imo.But I had always fall over heels for Tails. I don't even know why. Maybe I just felt some connection to him. Or maybe the anime made me like Tails, I dunno. But I always like Tails. So when I read what many people thought of him back then, it also hurt me very badly. Can't believe they would massacre my boy like that...
I feel like skipping Shadow The Hedgehog 2005 is a bit of mistake when it comes to Tails.
He basically beats Shadow twice.
Single-handedly taking down an Eggmanland even if Shadow successfully protects it from GUN. Then saving The President with a deception even if Shadow tries to kill them.

Hopes? Definitely! Expectations? I’ve kinda learned not to do that anymore! 😅 There are really encouraging signs, like the second Movie, Ian Flynn writing for Frontiers and the potential for Sonic Prime to be good! But I’m happy to wait and see how they all turn out rather than expecting it will all be great. Very hopeful though!
While you may be right about the tornado is the thing that brought Tails attention more, but I disagree because in the manuel it says that Tails attention was more towards Sonic Speedy because he never seen anything like that before and it another reason why Sonic like Tails is not for his smarts because he actually has a friend he can compete with his speed. There is something that Sonic Origins got right was the scene of Tails running after Sonic because like in the story Sonic inspires Tails, while Sonic in the other hand is impressed how his new friend can keep up with him.
There another reason why I say Tails is the 3rd fastest character besides of Shadow and Knuckles because he's the first character to actually compete with Sonic Speed.
It's honestly a sin that Tails is always sidelined in favor of Knuckles and Shadow and sometimes even Amy depending on the TV show.
I love tails as a kid and I think the best portrayal of him was in sonic x that I grew up watching it.

Honestly, I think Tails cowardliness in Unleashed was pretty justified. The guy was outnumbered by dark creatures he hasn't seen before, with no tech to help him no less. And these creatures not only outnumbered him, but also likely outweighs him as well.

There was only one single game where he was out of character, that being Adventure 2.
You justify all the times before that as simply pre-character-development.
