Is anybody else SICK of the "Sonic the Hedgehog's stupid friends" narrative? Well, if ever there was a character in the series who was most impacted by this ridiculous false narrative, it's my boi Knuckles the Echidna! Games media and series detractors have been attempting to gaslight us for well over a decade now that Sonic's friends have done nothing but hold the series back. With some "journalists" even going as far as trying to say the Sonic Series itself was NEVER good! Well I'm here to confirm that is complete and total nonsense! And what better way to make my argument than a TH-cam series going into insane detail on why each and every supporting Sonic character is important to the series?!
Miles Tails Prower, Amy Rose, Metal Sonic, Gamma, Shadow the Hedgehog, Rouge the Bat, E123 Omega, Silver, Blaze the Cat, Dr Eggman, and the star of this video, Knuckles the Echidna, were all important characters. Crucial to the series, and the deeper, Shonen style stories fans are desperate to see make a return!
Of course, there are many more than the ones I've just mentioned, and we will get to ALL of them in time! But for now, let's take a trip to Angel Island and check in on everyone's favorite chuckle monster, Knuckles the Echidna! With Sonic Prime, Sonic Origins and Sonic Frontiers just around the corner, let's first go back to a place and time where everything was perfect. And, bash on some terrible Knuckles takes along the way! Knuckles looks to be done justice in Sonic Movie 2. So let's analyze how that ties in to the games series.

Knuckle’s is finally getting the attention he deserves! He is getting his own live action series, Tails is even being rumored to be getting his own movie. Things seem to be heading to the positive side!

What’s cool about that post is that he is the one who predicted the Knuckles Live action show.

Honestly Knuckles is the one character besides maybe shadow who makes the most sense to have a super form. I mean he’s the literal guardian of the master emerald so a super form just makes so much sense
One of the most important takes that I’ve seen on the current Knuckles situation is that - [as cool as it is for him to be getting this new resurgence from Idris Elba and the movie] - It shouldn’t have taken Idris Elba and a movie for certain people to finally start respecting Knuckles again, or for the first time.
You make excellent points about how the games like Sonic Forces have fumbled their chance to redeem Knuckles prior to 2022. Hopefully Sonic Team will one day get their act together with the red echidna.
It definitely shouldn’t take something like a movie or Idris Elba to make Knuckles get the recognition he deserves. But he’s been left to decay in a pit of crappiness for so long now that it didn’t seem like Sega would just do it themselves. Maybe now they’ll change their tune.

Idris Elba’s character of Knuckles can finally bring back Big Red to his roots.
I can’t wait for this interpretation to bring him back as the OG Sonic rival as his design and character from Sonic 3 & Knuckles was my favourite interpretation of him in the series. He was and can still be hyped up to be a force to be reckoned with that can match Sonic.
Let’s see if this hype is worth it in the movie. Can’t wait to see it tomorrow! 🔴 VS 🔵

I think something future games could do for Knuckles is making him the "lore guy". Like, when you need exposition regarding treasures, or an ancient civilization, just have Knuckles give insight.
It's small, but it gives Knuckles a purpose and shows off his intelligence.

It makes me so happy to see Knuckles brought back into the spotlight. For years it has felt as though Sega have done all they can to discredit Knuckles. Now it's his turn to chuckle!
These is more to knuckles then just in the video game world and he is important so I'm excited to see Idris Elba as knuckles in sonic movie 2!

Really hoping the movie can do what we're all hoping and give Knuckles purpose again, and that hopefully Sonic Team pay attention! Undermining your own characters just makes people stop caring, and that's never a good thing. The popularity of the Sonic movies and the hype around them might just push Team Sonic in the right direction and use the movies to rebuild the characters that they broke. Loved the video and can't wait for more!

I’d definitely like to see more stories focusing on just Knuckles and Tails. It would likely help both characters grow and their dynamic would be insanely funny!

I love knuckles with all my heart I always saw myself in him a lot as a kid he was so quiet and and serious around new people but when you get to know him he’s so innocent and naive its exactly how I was as a kid and he taught me it’s always good to have at least a few friends and I cant wait to see him again in sonic 3
Knuckles is hands down my favorite Sonic character, and I agree with a lot of this analysis. So glad to see him return as the badass he always was in the movie
The way they treated him in Boom was horrible, especially in the cartoon. I loved the idea of Sonic being the jokester in contrast to Knuckles' "I don't fuck around" personality, and Boom turned the tables between them there. That's not my main problem tho. The main problem is that they make him look so weak and incapable compared to Sonic in combat, when that's clearly a load of shit considering he's supposed to be the muscle of the group. There were so many episodes where I just cringed knowing Knuckles could easily solve the situation with his super strength but just didn't for whatever horseshit fucking reason, and they made it seem like Sonic was the only one capable of saving the day when that's obviously bullshit. How does Knuckles struggle with giant robots yet Sonic could easily handle them? I don't give a shit how much faster Sonic is. If Knuckles can land a hit, WHICH HE CAN, it should be free for him. And don't even get me started on the fact that Shadow managed to severely injure him yet Sonic could take hits from him just fine??????
And shit like this started to happen in the main series prior as well, like Knuckles getting his shit kicked in by fucking Amy in Generations????
I may be biased here, but as cool as it is to see Knuckles' synergy with Sonic and Tails, I kinda prefer him solo, as the hero of his own story, and him being forced onto Team Sonic in Heroes kinda mitigated his quest to guard the Master Emerald, and he felt like more of a side player to Sonic the whole game. I personally feel like he would've fit better as a leader for Team Chaotix instead, but I'm kinda nitpicking at this point
I'm so glad you put emphasis on him knocking sonic out of his super form & we all know how powerful SS is goes to show you how much of a force knuckles can be people looked over that for years until now.
I saw Knuckles in the film adaptation and now I will try to voice my opinion about him without spoilers.
Your hopes will pay off with the red echidna, because the authors understood how to properly adapt the character in the movie. The key word is "adapt". That is, his character has undergone some changes. However, they look natural and do not stand out from his image, making Knuckles more striking and unique. But it probably won't be to everyone's liking. I really love this character and his image from the movie fascinated me. I especially like that he is shown to be very heavy in many ways. In commercials, he could shake the floor from landing. His punches are very strong and his voice is deep and his body is massive.
I want to tell the author of the video that he did a good job in analyzing the character and his importance in the series. I wish you success and creativity!
Since you've watched the movie I will say this. I love the movie Knuckles and happy about it because he isn't tied to guarding master emerald. He has a future to develop into an even greater character with more stories. His solo series will probably show his life before he met Sonic and afterwards too with the movie tie ins. I'm so excited.
I think everyone will agree that Knuckles from the movie is by far one of the best portrayals of the character so far.
We finally got peak Knuckles since the Adventure games in Sonic Movie 2.
I'm bad at explaining stuff but after watching this video, I have some thoughts to bring to the surface.👀
Knuckles has been my favorite character for only a few months now and with me only being a general Sonic fan since 2020, I wasn't there for any amazing parts in the franchise. I didn't get to play SA or SA2, I'm just hearing about it but still trying to get all the lore from different games into my head and chew on it. Back then, when I first was introduced to the franchise, Knuckles wasn't my main focus. That only happened later on and as I started to grow a liking on our echidna friend here, I began to realize just how terrible Knuckles has been treated for the past years, only being used as a joke or sidecharacter, never actually having his time to shine. Same goes for other characters too, but since this video is about Knuckles, I will stay on track and talk about him only.
Knuckles is a character with a lot of potential. A strong and talented fighter, who knows a lot about the Emeralds and things general associated with treasure and others regarding his echidna culture. Now I fully agree with you here: Knuckles is BY NO MEANS dumb. He is a little naive, but that is understandable given his backstory of growing up mostly alone, having no other people to talk to or hang out with. It is said that Knuckles tries to believe in the good in everyone and wants to give them a second chance. But just because he thinks like that doesn't mean he is stupid. He realizes his mistakes and tries to make them good again. I think that is one adorable and great characterization of Knuckles, making him so likable to me. I truly adore this character and I am happy being a fan during the "Movie adaptions", since Knuckles really seems to be portrayed right in the movies. Now I really cannot say anything about that yet, as I will only watch the movie next week. Though from what I have seen so far, Knuckles seems to be the perfect mix of serious and funny, someone who is a dangerous fighter, but at the same time can be hilarious due to him not being very adept at social interactions. So yes, given that we are hopefully entering a good Sonic-character-portration-phase again, I am very curious as to where the movies will bring us and hope that SEGA will also improve on it again and give us other playable characters than just Sonic. It really gets boring in my opinion, but oh well.

Amazing character analysis, I had a lot of fun watching this video and see some parts I can only agree with. Knuckles deserves better indeed and I hope we are getting a reboot of his character. I have high hopes for the cinematic universe and that it will give us the right portrayal these characters definitely need. So, but now I will tap out for real! With SEGA recently getting rid of the massive plot hole inducing two worlds retcon, hiring Ian and allowing Knuckles to have his own spin off show I do have hope they can turn this ship around. My favorite era of Knuckles of course is the IMO Golden Era of Sonic games (Sonic 1 to Heroes) and I do think he deserves to be just as prominent as Shadow, even if he can't be the main rival anymore. Seriously you could focus on his ancestors lore, his connections with the super natural elements of the Sonic franchise or heck use his status as guardian to spin off to his own thing and bring Fang, Mighty and Ray to the Modern era. Say what you will of Archie pre and post reboot but both Ken and Ian never lost sight on how important Knuckles is to the Sonic franchise.
On a side note while I do think your videos are great, I think you are unnecessarily holding yourself back by only talking about the main titles for your character videos. Sonic Battle for instance is a gold mine for good character writing with interesting concepts for both Knuckles and Shadow.

First of all, thank you for this video. Knuckles is such an amazing character that Sega destroyed for slapstick. If he's dumb because Eggman tricked him, then everybody in Sonic's franchise is an idiot. I can't count how many times 300IQ Tails, protagonist Sonic, Amy, the Chaotix, Shadow, even Rouge have been tricked by Eggman (more than once).
Second, If you think he's amazing in the games, you should of seen him in the Archie comics. He was considered a prodigy, but similar to the games, was abandoned and lived by himself for many years. He also became a demi-god three times and destroyed a whole dimension in his super form. Plus he had all these cool Chaos powers (in his base form) before the Super-Genesis Wave reboot the universe.
I tend to think Shadow The Hedgehog has a great plot-arc for Knuckles if you just apply "The Chaotix Test" to him.
First appearance was investigating ancient ruins - probably provoked by some ancient lore.
Second appearance was preventing Central City from being blown up - despite having idle dialogue in Glyphic Ruins about how he doesn't like leaving the Master Emerald unattended.
Third appearance was him intending to tear the Black Comet apart by hand - because he wasn't going to let that go. Answering the moral call, before and above the call of mere duty.
I think with Ian Flynn writing for Sonic Frontiers, I think Knuckles would probably get the limelight again, since the story probably will talk about the origins of the Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald too
I’m hopeful but I don’t want to get ahead of myself until I see it for myself. 😅
I have more hope for future games with the Movies showing how much their characters are loved as well as Ian Flyn moving from writing the comics to writing for some of the games. Plus he even did writing for the Sonic Boom TV show as well. So I got hope for the series’ future.
I want to see him playable again in a future game, perhaps with a retroactive explanation as to his time spent away from the Master Emerald being more clear. I sort of wonder if he could have taken Classic’s place in Forces. Apparently, there were plans for him to be playable in Unleashed, but the Werehog took his place. Might be misremembering that though

Knuckles might've gone downhill in the modern games ever since 06, but it's so refreshing to see the red echidna back in his original roots and being badass again in Sonic Movie 2. And I can't wait to learn even more about him in his spin-off show some time next year.🥊
The Sonic the Hedgehog Movie 2 did true justice for Knuckles character, he was literally the best character.

wake up y'all new intro just dropped! Love knuckles he is one of my favorites! I used to play the stories in sonic adventure JUST to get to the flashbacks because I loved the lore as a kid. Also having the stage themes in Adventure 2 (for shadow and knuckles) be a window into their thoughts was interesting.

23:38 you talk about how Knuckles is now a character that punches first and thinks second. But honestly, isn't that how he's introduced in both Sonic 3 and Sonic Adventure? I remember both of those first encounters with him being very antagonistic because he didn't give Sonic and Tails enough time to explain. I see Knuckles as someone who covets and seeks out peace and tranquility but who's biggest personal flaw is that he always lets his emotions get the better of him, so I like that aspect of his character. You might think that's him being dumb, but I find it almost emotionally tragic. Really makes me feel for him.
And I think the reason that he's "dumb" in a more goofy way nowadays is because he warmed up to being around friends now. He didn't let his silly side come out in the earlier games because he hadn't learned how to have friends and open up yet. I do think though that the games need to strike a better balance and remember that he's still allowed to be cool.

I agree, knuckles definitely wears his heart on his sleeves and is very much an emotional person when it comes to his actions. But I attempted to explain (maybe badly) the reasons why I could excuse his rash decision making back in classic and adventure. He didn’t actually trust anyone yet and made really bad decisions based on the information he had.
But the fact that he has gone through a developmental journey with these characters by the time 06 rolled around, and was somehow back to being a brash idiot and STILL punching first and thinking second was imo regression.
Knuckles also showed how smart and resourceful he was in the early days. Catching Sonic off guard constantly and relentlessly tracking down the master emerald pieces twice. Using his powers as guardian to neutralise the Chaos Emeralds. But we don’t see any of that stuff anymore. He’s very much a one sided coin.
Just my own views though, definitely not stating them as fact. 🙂
@@AceCardGaming Yeah I think that's what falls flat for me about modern Knuckles is how we're ONLY shown his "dumb" side.
He's not very emotionally aware and doesn't have a lot of tact, and I think the writers have focused way too hard on that aspect of his character. He's ALSO supposed to be smart in other more practical ways, like you said hes very resourceful. That balance in his character I feel like got lost somewhere along the way.
I hope movie Knuckles is much more like 3&K and adventure Knuckles than what’s followed

Knuckles is definitely not an idiot. Heck in the OVA he’s shown to be able to repair the tornado and in season 3 of sonic X he’s the main person to repair and maintain the blue typhoon besides Tails. So yeah he’s definitely not dumb
Honestly I love series with large casts and I love all Sonic’s friends and allies. Tails,Knuckles,Shaodow,Amy,Rouge,Omega,Big,Cream,Vector,Espio,Charmy,Silver.
It really must continue to be reiterated that Knuckles, at least in an introduction, is hands first and *will* defend his home.
Sonic 2 and Idris Elba hopefully did enough to bring the character back. It was so awesome to see him doing important things again.
A video about "Sonic's Stupid Friends" perfectly states why we need Sonic's friends to be more involved in the games, Sonic is a Flat Character.
A flat character does not change, the flat character will remain the same as he started, Sonic does not change but he changes the characters around him.
I remember seeing this in the Adventures and Rush, In SA1 he influences Tails to become his own hero and for knuckles to open up a bit.
In SA2 he influence a competitive streak in Shadow at the end of the game.
In Rush Cream chips away at Blaze's her lone wolf lifestyle, and Sonic proceeds to smash it with a hammer.
The reason the games have been so....empty lately is that it is completely on the fact it is centered around a Flat Character. Not to say that centering around a flat character is bad, Sonic is a great flat character, but a flat character needs to be surrounded by dynamic characters that are shown to be influenced by said flat character..
Writing a good story centring around a flat character and very little else, is quite difficult to do. Seemingly far beyond the capabilities of Pontac and Graff. Who I feel, never really understood or cared about where these characters came from before they were even on the scene.
But with a change in the writing staff, who knows what we can expect. I just can’t believe it could be somehow worse than what we’ve gotten for the past 10 years.
I mean does he really change characters around him? I mean he helped knuckles but knuckles still really has problems with him, Shadow respect Sonic but that doesn't mean they really likes him, and the rest don't even really talk to Sonic that much the only one I think he changed around and was tails but he didn't really change that much of the Sonic characters.

Knuckles eventually lost importance because he did a Piccolo, he peaked.
Now we just have to see if this carries over into Sonic 3 and beyond....

Sonic Heroes I think is pretty cool as a game, but it's at a really unfortunate spot in the timeline, being where Shadow is REVIVED as well as many other important things, but it was a game where the story was made SECOND. So having a bunch of important things decided for the story in that game was... weird.
Just a bit of food for thought: Maybe Knuckles thought shattering the Master Emerald was the best solution in SA2 since in Sonic 3 (& Knuckles) he tried grabbing the Master Emerald when Eggman/Robotnik tried stealing and got electrocuted by him. Since he knew trying to grab it would be futile, the next best thing to ensure Eggman couldn't have the Master Emerald would be shattering it again. In essence learning from past mistakes so he didn't make them again.
I actually like this reasoning. It’s still a big risk but at least this offers some logic.
@@AceCardGaming Not to mention it would give Rouge extra work to actually get the Master Emerald since at the time they were enemies so it'd be a win-win for Knuckles. Eggman won't get the Master Emerald, and this jewel thief that popped out of nowhere doesn't get it either.
The main issue for me is that it suddenly abandons the idea (or at least that Knuckles cares about it) that without the Master Emerald, Angel Island falls from the sky. Especially since it happened in SA1.
@@AceCardGaming I was just going off the assumption that by the time we catch up with Knuckles in SA2 by that point we weren't on Angel Island, since I was assuming if we were it would've had the same design it had in SA1.
I have to be honest, I don't remember Knuckles being that popular back in the day. Don't get me wrong, I was a massive fan of Knuckles, and I remember the hype surrounding him through the marketing, but nobody I knew seemed to give a damn about him! It felt like everyone I knew never played Sonic 3 or Sonic & Knuckles. I even remember telling a friend of mine that you could connect S&K to Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 and play as Knuckles in those games, and I vividly remember his reaction. He just shrugged his shoulders and said "So?" It actually made me feel bad that I liked this character. It was like the "Sonic's stupid friends" attitude existed even back then!
I'm glad that videos like this prove that there are others who want to see characters like Knuckles and others getting better treatment.

"Why would I wanna play as that lame-o Knuckles when I've got cool, awesome Sonic right here? He's A BAZILLION times better than stinky Knuckles!" This truly was the start of the stupid friends trend, and it just sadly never went away!
And still to this day I don't understand this thought process. People complain about Sonic's friends, and Sega drops them like a hot plate, and bends over backwards to make them look worse than they ever were to begin with in order to make Sonic and whatever one-time sidekick he had for one game look better! And yet Fans clamour for their return as well written, well utilised and well respected characters again, and Sega looks the other way! "Well, we want to get Sonic right first! So you can either like it or lump it!" Why do such negative attitudes towards this series ultimately trump more positive ones?

As Characters In-Depth said about him in the Meta Era, along with other two characters of Team Sonic became more like Team Babylon who were originally like dark reflections of themselves.
Sonic: took notes from Jet and became a hell of a lot more arrogant.
Tails: became conceited like Wave and patronizes other tech geniuses.
Knuckles: lowered to bumbling comic relief which continued what Storm started with, but multiped greatly. Boom Knuckles is an exaggeration of that. He has Storm's build, but he's a total dumbass!
I despise Boom Knuckles and is one of the key reasons why outside a few episodes I have a strong dislike for Boom. Let's make him a bumbling fool because its "funny"! (its not funny)
Here's hoping that with the movie giving the character back some much needed credibility and self respect it rubs off on the game version of him. Also Forces could have been so much more if Knuckles, and everyone else wasn't sidelined for a couple of mutes with barely enough personality between to fill a sandwich, one of which - the bad tribute act - having even less of a reason in being there. Here's hoping he's playable in Frontiers and not replaced by a Wisp again, because who needs Sonic's friends when you can take their functions and have Sonic use them instead? But seriously though, we want characters who could expand the story, not brightly coloured functions that add nothing but slow you down everytime you need to use them.

@@AceCardGaming I do wonder if with the movie that they borrowed a page from the Sonic And Tails R book for writing Knuckles when it comes to looking at the Meta Era, by giving it the widest berth you possibly can. Those were truly words to live and die by from Emi Jones, when she said about avoiding all of it.
One sonic and tails aren’t any way similar to jet or wave like at all. Sonic is the same just more flandorized. Two I don’t think character in depth is a good source for anything, the guy is the sonic fan equivalent to hitop films.
@@aidanshowers8366 how are they not? Sonic's arrogance is completely out of control, even going as far to grind his friends into the dirt with trash talking in the Meta Era games, as seen with his interaction with Silver in Team Sonic Racing, the same way Jet would to Sonic.
As for for Wave, she talks down Tails' Extreme Gear creations, calling them amateur as she acts as if she is the superior genius. While in Lost World Tails is constantly constantly talking down Eggman's robots while acting as if he is the superior genius.
I'd say he's actually quite on the money, save for the Japanese scripts where they actually written to be more in character compared to the English script.

@@DemonDethchase Sonic’s interaction with silver is simply competitive banter, Sonics has always been somewhat mean to his friends on some level. In the adventure games he calls knuckles knuckle head in the OVA he yells at tails to shut up. As for tails him criticizing robotnik’s machines is fair seeing as how they are almost always easily dismantled. Not to mention in the full context of the scene wave actually respects tails’ work and is actually intimidated by it.
Knuckles was my second favorite Sonic character, however if I am to be honest upon further realization I dislike the whole cast on the 2010's era, as not only did they lack character, but regressed or changed too much that they lacked or had ideas with them they could've explored taken away. And I feel Knuckles was the worst offender on all accounts, they've done him dirty since 2005's Sonic Rush honestly. Don't get me wrong, when the 4kids era could get the characters right they were on point, but they were so inconsistent in that regard and Knuckles always seemed to be the weakest link, as in the only thing made consistent about him was the fact he was getting tricked or treated as an idiot.
While his relevance to the story is very subdued, I liked the fact Knuckles in Adventure 2 was just this chilled laid back guy doing his duty to get the master emerald back. Sure Knuckles may not have done the best job keeping it around, but what I like d about the Adventure games was that he was shown to take responsibility on his own to defend or get it back. I do like the hotheadedness that came later, to expand his character, but I dislike how his chill disposition just vanished. Like one of my favorite moments was seeing Knuckles from the sewer in SA2 saying "hey guys long time no see".. Which also leads me to this, I dislike how dumb they made him. In Sonic Boom its fine because it's a separate continuity (people need to stop merging and comparing the characters as if Boom defines particular attributes of them) but in later games its just character damaging.
I always saw Knuckles being tricked in older games as a way to showcase someone who's lived a sheltered life or lifestyle away from people. As Knuckles was shown to have street smarts, like knowing about powers of not just the master emerald and the ability to communicate and understand ancient languages, but the chaos emerald and was a skilled treasure hunter, but his lack of interactions with people caused his judgement on people to be shortsighded, and that isn't due to a lack of intelligence, but rather since not interacting with people very much doesn't grasp the idea of communication, which is normal for someone not use to people in their life since he's had to live his life guarding that emerald. I was even fine with Knuckles taking a break from guarding in games like Heroes and Advance trilogy because it felt more like a progression of his character becoming more accepting around having people in his life and enjoying the adventure, after all if the emerald is out of harms way there's no issue with going out a time or two. (Plus master emerald was in the plot of Advance 3) it really sucks that the last time the Master emerald had plot relevance in Sonic Rivals 2 it was to compliment an ending where the punchline was Knuckles being too stupid to know his emerald was in a device, even though he has a special connection to the emerald and could sense its power.
I'm so glad the movie did Knux some justice. The most recent portrayal was forces, but that doesn't mean much.
Knuckles is arguably my favorite character from the Sonic games! Seeing his attitude in Heroes was enough to have him earn that.
If the first movie gave Sonic more depth as a character, I’m certain Knuckles has a bright future for the second movie!

With the way things have been looking since Forces (Colours: Ultimate notwithstanding), it is looking more and more like things have massive potential for change very soon. Everything outside of the games has really been kicking off and going swimmingly, and with SEGA showing that they are seeing the success of the supporting media, it is highly likely that they are finally taking notes.
Your old intro shall be sorely missed, but ynew intro is very cool. I like it. I hope this video does excellently and I am very excited for more! (I didn't get notified of this upload, so I guess I have to Shovel Claw that bell more than once).

I loved Knuckles, he was my favourite character in those Genesis games.
Knuckles's portrayal in the new Sonic movie was pretty good.
As excited as the 2nd movie cliffhanger gets me, it also pisses me off for skipping over Metal Sonic's introduction and over the Chaos and Tikal ark. Given that the whole wiping off the echidna clan happened centuries ago, they could easily integrate that part of the story without interfering too much with the pre-established lore of the movies. And it would actually make sense for the echidnas to have survived as a small village to give birth to Knuckles, rather than have them dissappear eons ago and have Knuckles be born from thin air, like in the games. The breaking of the master emerald in the second movie would also set the stage for Chaos and Tikal breaking free.
We deserve to have more games that let us play as Tails and/or Knuckles.

I agree with most of your points about Knuckles in Sonic 06, but I'm not sure about the part with Rouge. The scene was the general teasing they normally have, and they didn't really have enough screentime (just a line or two at each other) for us to really see them bounce off each other and prove it "devolved into animosity".
Sonic X isn't part of the main game series or anything, but it's PRETTY GREAT ACTUALLY. We get to see the characters with their Adventure personalities actually talking with each other, and stuff we didn't get to see much of (like Rouge and Knuckles) is very frequently brought up in that show. It's something I think more people should talk about- though maybe not when discussing the main games, but just in general when people talk about missing the Adventure Era and wishing there was more of it.
I guess you CAN cut knuckles some slack in sonic boom, as it was a universe where the master emerald and chaos emeralds don’t exist. But it still doesn’t excuse the fact about how dumb they make him nowadays.
Having seen the movie, but not wanting to spoil it for anyone who hasn't, I'd be really curious to hear your thoughts on this new depiction!

It kinda sucks for Knux because who he is in Boom and who he's meant to be are SO different that a new fan would have whiplash from seeing them side by side. It also sucks because I appreciate both versions of Knux in their own ways but it would've been more beneficial for Boom Knux to be a different character entirely, one not associated with Knux whatsoever. The irony is that the real Knux would be out of place in a show like Boom... It's such a shame they soiled his reputation.
Also, I always liked the card toss in 06 and never equated it to stupidity 😅

Knuckles has always been my favourite character, but I always hated the idea that he is stupid, rather than the awesome, yet socialy naive guy he used to be
While knuckles hasn’t been treated the best if I’m being honest X is imo the worst because they give you a good knuckles but the he’s a bumbling oaf that trusts eggman whenever he appears to be in a sticky situation. And in SA2 breaking the master emerald, look I know he can collect the pieces but he ultimately made it easier for rouge to get some of the pieces and this is literally equivalent of being a security guard at a museum and breaking a priceless artifact so the thief doesn’t steal it. I’d rather have boom knuckles honestly at least it’s not trying to be two things at ounce and knows what this version of the character is and imo isn’t offensive since it’s a different universe.

Every since i seen Knuckles, i always thought he looked like if Triple H was in the Sonic Universe. That can maybe be Knuckles Potential too?
I respect the decision if this is an intentional omission, but I think I understand the reason why Knuckles specifically has gotten such a rough treatment... and it's got nothing to do with the games themselves. You see, Knuckles has been the target of massive lore expansion before... in another adaptation, long ago.
In case the HUNDREDS, if not THOUSANDS, of videos regarding his actions haven't flown your way: Ken Penders was brought on to write for the Archie Comics adaptation of Sonic back in the day... and for what it's worth, his constant lore expansions, for better or worse, gave Ian Flynn -- a name almost synonymous with "good Sonic writing" at this point -- a lot of things to work with after he succeeded Penders; not to mention succeeding where most argue Penders failed. After Penders was dismissed, it pained him to see Flynn do so well with the characters he created. So what did he do? He SUED Archie and SEGA, and somehow won the rights to his 200+ original characters because neither company could produce proof he worked under them; this despite the licensed property precedent of your intellectual properties (characters, settings, plot devices, etc.) being owned by the company who created the licensed content. But that wouldn't be the only time he sued SEGA over this...
Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood released to mixed reviews. Its writing was critically acclaimed, as were all Bioware games... but ironically, its audio is undeniably the worst in the series. That aside, it introduced a new group of echidnas... technophiles that were banished to a different plane of existence from Knuckles' main tribe, that finally resurfaced for revenge. And unfortunately for the team behind it... this was entirely too similar to a group of echidnas created by Penders for him to believe it was a coincidence; especially when the very same Archie comic that he created them in, promoted the characters from this new game. So naturally, he sued again.
As a result of this lawsuit, the characters introduced were immediately retired, never to be mentioned again; and strict character mandates were put in place, as confirmed by modern licensors of SEGA content -- especially ones like the IDW comics that are not overt spin-offs that take place in their own distinct continuity, like Sonic Boom or Paramount's cinematic universe. Whether these mandates were introduced by court order, or by SEGA themselves to prevent further incidents from Penders or writers that could turn out like him, is unclear; but what IS clear is whose egotistical actions are responsible for the uphill climb of writing for Knuckles, especially in the game canon.
I am honestly not sure if I have a stronger hope to see Penders admit he wouldn't win a legal dispute with Paramount... or watch his ego take them on only for Paramount blow him out of the water, like he has LONG DESERVED.
Sega or/and Sonic Team should just grow a pair of blue balls and just utilize Somic's friends properly again. Ignore the dumb dumbs who think Sonic should not have friends. How would THEY like it if THEY don't have any friends? How would they like if Mario doesn't have friends? Just spitting obvious things here. 🤷🏽♂️

How do you forget Knuckles role in Sonic Chronicles? I know it was made permanently non-canon because of Ken Penders, although really it was the 1 of the last games to get everyone right it felt like. I remember Knuckles & Shade leading a team in Chapter 10 & taking on Ix while Sonic watched from above after Knuckles remembered his role as guardian of the Master Emerald.

It seems you didn't include any of the spin-off games. In fact, there are a few good moments where Knuckles shines. Like in The Riders games(not including Free Riders) where they show some conflict between him and Storm of The Babylon Rogues, and when he shows some of his skills as a treasure hunter at some ancient ruins in Zero Gravity.
And I know they tried to expand some lore of his past in Chronicles, which would've worked if not because of the game's controls.
having the luck of living in Europe i could see sonic movie 2 (i won't spoil anything don't worry) it was worth the wait and for those who were worried about knuckles, his portrayal is on par with sonic 3 and adventure sceries to me he was close to perfectly portrayed serioulsy go see it it is worth it !
