If it earned $245m worldwide against a $130m budget it lost money. The theaters take roughly 50% (about 40% Domestically, 60% internationally), so we'll round down and say the theaters took an estimated $120m worldwide. Add to that the marketing budget which varies depending on the movie, but can be up to 50% of the production budget. The movie would've lost 10s of millions of dollars, it's only a matter of how many 10s. Personally, as an early 80s arcade kid I had very high hopes for this movie when I saw the previews, but it fell short off my expectations 😕.
exactly, kids would not get the "wheres the beef" reference or probably even things like the old video games. This is a movie or the kids of the 70s, 80s era mostly that are grown up now
Nah, this movie was aimed squarely at guys who were arcade rats back in the early 80s, and if they had any, their kids. So very, very many of the jokes and references were aimed directly at us Gen X guys who lived in the arcades back in the golden age of arcades. As one of those people, I can definitely assure you, we were the target audience.
I’m officially subscribed to your TH-cam channel now! Thank you guys so much for reacting to my most favorite Adam Sandler movie! Pixels is not a perfect and may be for everyone but it’s certainly is for me! I’d give it a 10 out of 10! This movie is UNDERRATED AS HELL!!! Such a freaking shame!
@@Jay_SullivanIf Ready Player one is trash, then this is the worse film of all time. Ready Player one is not trash, 7/10 at best, but definitely not trash.
@@Jay_Sullivan Well, maybe for your subjective opinion, but objectively, it isn't. Ready Player One has a better written script, much better acting, cinematography, etc.; it beats this horrible film in every filmmaking aspect. There's a reason this film is one of the lowest-rated films by critics; it's horrible. But I am glad you like it; that doesn't mean objectively that it's a great film; it's terrible. Horrible acting and writing with so many plot holes, mediocre cinematography, etc. Nothing about the film is salvageable; it is a 1/10, terrible film.
@@reynaldolorenzo8409 , I don't think you understand the words you're using. You can't rightly say something is "objectively better" and then list your subjective opinions as evidence.
13:27 this is an actor playing him. He was offered the role but turned it down due to his English. You see the actual creator at the beginning working on an arcade game.
It is mostly a throw back to the days before home gaming.. The movie style of campy silliness, the games that we used to spend hundreds of quarters playing in arcades, the almost painful puns and jokes.. but no real seriousness to it other than to just be fun and enjoyable.. I loved that from the film, as most of them today seem to have to have a point or some agenda that they need to pass on, rather than just being a fun time to escape from all that crap being foisted on us 24/7.. :)
This movie was made for people who were gaming in the 80's. As a 55 year old I actually got mostly all of the references and easter eggs. I watched Pixels, Ready player one, and Free guy with my 22 year old nephew who is big into pc gaming. He loved Free guy, but didn't care for Ready player one or Pixels, because he didn't know the games and characters from the olden days of pixilated gaming or 80's and 90's pop culture. I preferred Pixels and Ready player one over Free guy, it's a generational thing.
I am an arcade game collector, and this movie absolutely PISSED OFF the arcade game collecting community. Me? I thought it was hilarious! The only real "plot hole" was that there was no "Pac-Man Cheat Code" for the original arcade version. However, for "upgraded" versions, there was actually a "code" (but not a cheat) to add Super Speed to either Pac-Man or Ms. Pac-Man. It's most commonly found in the "Class of '81" cabinet that contains Galaga, Ms. Pac-Man, and (through another code), Pac-Man. The codes are very well known, and easy to find online if you know where the actual cabinets are. I have one in my home, so I use those codes often for variety. My personal collection is small, but I know people with their homes literally filled with classic cabinets. I know many in the collecting community hate this movie, but I think it's a fun, nostalgia packed movie that takes me back to the 1980s when I was a teenager. I have many fond memories of living in the arcades, and wouldn't change a bit of it.
In a movie full of dumb writing, the part that got me was that they couldn't find a single soldier who was also a gamer. When this movie came out there were enough gamers in the military from just graduates of my high school to succeed at these challenges.
When this movie first came out, I found it entertaining enough and enjoyable, but I could take it or leave it. However, over the years ever since, the more and more I saw it on TV, the more i actually started loving it more, primarily because it was just a silly, fun movie not meant to be taken seriously. However, I do agree with you guys that this really did have the awesome potential of being a pretty cool, sci-fi movie idea. It's not among my favorites of Adam Sandler's, but I would still call it a feel-good movie & fun, good entertainment. Interestingly enough, I feel the same way about this as his movie, Blended. I was not a big fan of Blended when I first saw it, but the more and more I see it on tv, the more I enjoy it and think it is just a fun, feel-good, silly movie you can watch when you are sick and need cheered up, just like this movie is. Whenever I see Brian Cox in a movie, the first thing I think of is, "The Long Kiss Goodnight", a very fun, underrated action movie.
Even though I'm what you would call the prime target age for the video game rage, I never got into them and stayed with good old fashion pinball. But I did play those games and watched a lot of others play so I got all the references. I think this was a pet project of Sandler's to live out some of his video game fantasies.
I avoided this movie for so long cause I thought it looked shit, watched it recently and was pleasantly surprised. Not an incredible movie but a fun watch
*I'm so glad u guys watched this 😂😂 its such an amazing "WTF" movie that reflects American GOV and society to a Tee😂😂 and one of the best video game movies ever! if you guys would watch Ready player one, free guy and gamer, I would literally die happy😂😂*
Yalled skipped over the part where she dismissed adam being her rebound guy and adamn says if he was a billionaire on a yacht she wouldnt have rejected him. Thats the important part
These type of movies are so much better when you know the history or whatever. Like "where's the beef" or whatever. someone watching this that is too young might like the movie as is, but so much funnier when you get the nostalgic references. It's why i feel im at the perfect age for a lot of these nowadays.
I seen this at the theater and love it but too bad it didn’t get good reviews. I do have this movie in 3D Bluray. I have a 4k tv with Bluray. I own the movie in 3D and could watch any time in 3D

I bet Peter Dinklage had a blast in this.
Nobody ever recognizes his wife in his movies, she was the secretary who says the president will see you now.
Yep, I think most people didn't know she was his real wife
Sucks that this film got panned by critics upon release, yet it made $244 million dollars against a $130 million dollar budget.
That's basically the trend with Adam Sandler movies. They're trashed by critics yet they earn double or triple the budget.
He only gets a bad rep because critics are cynical a$$holes.
I love this movie for what it is... wholesome quality family entertainment.

This wasn't a good movie though..
Q-Bert wasn't a hostage, he was a prize for beating them in Pac-Man. Just like the Duck Hunt Dog was a prize for winning in centipede.
This is not a kids movie. This was directly aimed at people like me who grew up with these types of games and totally get the Sandler type shtick.

Pixels was a really fun and funny family movie, which is the kind of movies Chris Columbus is good at making
