I can tell you that as soon as my contract expires that I will drop Cox and switch to Google fiber. The extra $5/month is worth it to me to get rid of Cox. Strange that Cox offered me half the price for 3 times the download speed (with a 2 year contract) just months before Google started laying fiber. I signed up to get the 100 Meg uplink for my Plex server (previously the max available was 30 Meg, which seemed more a suggestion). If I could cancel Prime video without losing free shipping, I would. I REALLY HATE all the commercials now on Prime.

I learned that lesson when I cut the cord on October 8, 2010. I'm already in the second phase of cord cutting. Earlier this year, I cancelled Netflix and Hulu, because I just wasn't watching them any more and the cost of no-ads watching is growing too quickly.

Along with literally everything else. Technology is a catch 22. You only need one ISP, one operating system, etc. Competition is pointless when any idiot knows you pick the ISP with the fastest available speed. Without fiber optics, cable is it. And I refuse anything satellite and 5G, not only because it can be hacked from the air, but quality and reliability will never be guaranteed in comparison. This is the real world, and it will always be that way. A.I. will just cause more of the same risks and problems. Welcome to reality. Aint it grand? :(

I went to Cord cutting 2.0 with T- Mobile a couple months ago. Been satisfied so far. It has gone down a few times but they have been updating the towers around me. So that should be happening less. Got about the same down load speed of around 400 and upload is much faster around 60 with no external antenna, but may get later. The best part over all a lot cheaper. Down from $100 to $60. Got lots of perks when I signed up along with phone service, the phone service was also cheaper with it. Got Netflix,Apple TV and a $200 gift card. I think they now added security cameras with it now. If we ever get fiber in my area and I can afford may get that for faster speeds. However I’d probably be sticking with 2.0 at the same time to keep the discount and perks.

Unfortunately where I live, you only have two options for broadband. Either terrestrial wireless which is very unreliable, or satellite. We’ve had traditional satellite internet and it sucks. Data caps, slow speeds, and weather outages are just not worth the cost. Starlink? Not on our budget! Cable has never come out this far, in fact I doubt that it ever will, and we’ve never been able to get DSL. T-Mobile’s 5G isn’t available either. They are supposed to be bringing fiber to our area, so we are crossing our fingers and waiting for it to finally go live. That’s the one bad thing about living in a rural area, you generally have few choices (if any) for decent internet service.

Meanwhile theyre subscribed to Netflix, Prime, Disney Plus, Hulu, AMC+, Peacock, Paramount Plus, HBO Max, etc.... At the end of the day all of those services add up and you end up spending around the same you would have with a standard cable/satelitte TV package. And depending upon your cable company some of these apps are included free with your cable tv package.

Starlink speeds are in the 200mbs with 20-40 ms.
With the success of the starship launch.
      The price should drop drastically.

I started with my smart TV, but it started to reduce the channel, and the “smart” features lost support as TV got older. So I switched to ROKU and haven’t looked back. I won’t buy a “smart” TV again if I can avoid it, just a good TV and use a ROKU. The primary product of TV manufacturers are TV’s not streaming software, ROKU primary business is streaming software and devices. So ask your self who is going to put more investment in streaming technologies. I would prefer TV manufacturers to invest in making better TV’s and just bundle or let the customers choose a streaming device.

A little bit of an off-topic comment, but I'll be glad when this election season finishes in three weeks. I live at the border of two competitive congressional House of Reps districts and I'm getting inundated with ads from all four candidates; three ad breaks during this 10 minute CCN video. I sure hope CCN is getting a healthy cut of ad revenue for putting up with it. Surprisingly very few [ political ] ads when watching something on a FAST streaming channel.

Just went thru Hurricane Milton. Very lucky.... minor damage and only a 3 day power outage....but Spectrum is still out (starting Oct 9, 2024). My house-bound Mom depends on Internet-based Lifeline equipment but still NO Spectrum internet/TV connectivity. I live a few blocks away (fortunately) and have ATT Fiber. I lost electricity as well but with power from my little generator, I had full 500 mbps service instantly....even during an otherwise full blackout with high winds and rain. Spectrum has yet to offer a "repair" timeline and I am positive they won't pro-rate their monthly billing to reflect this extended outage. I am now weighing alternatives for her. Spectrum is bye-bye.

Well maybe the cable providers will think twice about their ridiculous rates. If not, I guess they’ll go out of business.
Same with subscription services that keep increasing their rates. Got rid of Max last year and Apple TV this year. I refuse to support those companies.

Comcast Xfinity is the only high speed internet in our area that gives us up to gigabit, so there is no way I and most people would cancel as a result. I prefer direct ethernet connections. It is more secure than anything wireless, including 5G and satellite, which can be hacked from the air. And I know multiple cases in which this has happened. The only downside is you are limited to 100 mbps on the Roku streaming boxes with ethernet, not that this affects the streaming quality up to 4K HDR, 60 fps with Dolby Vision. And again, A.I. should permanently end. But I digress.

Where I live I can only get Cable Internet or DSL internet.
AT&,T at one point offered fixed 5G but no longer offers in my area.
I do not even live in the middle of nowhere because if I did then I would better understand why I don't get anything beyond cable & DSL internet service.
It just seems like there's not enough companies expanding their fiber & fixed 5G services. Either that or they are just at a stand still, I am not sure which it might be.
I am anxiously awaiting fiber optic internet but I highly doubt my area will get that any time soon! .

Spectrum was charging us almost $300 a month for basic cable and internet, and raising rates about every other month. OF COURSE they are losing customers, we gotta be able to eat! Starlink for the win. And when Amazon gets up and running, I will consider them too. May the cheapest GOOD option win!

I never subscribed to cable or any other pay

When I had cable internet it was unreliable, had data caps and generally expensive. So I switched to T-Mobile 5G, it’s OK, but there are minor issues, particularly when. ending to do zoom connections the upload speed is inconsistent. So hopefully by the end of the years I am going fiber with the same speed both up and down. The fiber cable is to the house, just waiting for the physical connection. Price is about the same. With T-Mobile the speed is all over the place, it works well for streaming, but occasionally I need to do a video conference and there is sucks badly for the upload video.

Yeah actually I use a Roku in the Roku Channel used to be my favorite free streaming service but frankly Amazon Prime has really stepped up their game and so that has become my favorite free streaming service mainly because they have some really great free channels that I really can't find anywhere else like they have WB horror stories, WB cartoon rewind, and they have a sitcom Channel I don't really remember the name of what they call it that has a lot of episodes of growing pains on it, also the dungeons & dragons has some great potential the only problem is they haven't really updated it so hopefully that gets updated and get some new stuff on it

I live in cow country and have and will continue with cable internet. We never thought we would have it here. Use to have satellite internet but in bad weather had problems. As far as other options we don't and or can't get anything else and from what I see satellite is more expensive than my cable is right now. The main thing with cable is I feel people are paying for band width they don't even need or use. If they checked on what speeds their devices use/need they maybe surprised that paying for 500MPS to a 1 Gig plan is WAY more than they need. I sub to 1-2 channels right now and use Roku devices even thou I have Samsung TV's due to their customization for their home screen. Just hate sifting through all the smart TV home screens which are very congested with a bunch of home screen stuff.

I would not say that any streaming service you get that is included with Walmart plus or Verizon is free.
There is a difference between free and included.
When it’s included, you are paying a little bit more for that membership or service than you would be otherwise. You don’t get anything like that for free.
I would like to see the question asked how many of the paid services are people using. Rather than paying for. I would bet the number would be closer to five a month instead of two or three.
And how many subscribe to one of the live TV streaming services?
I think that would be a better indicator of what is happening in the marketplace.

good to hear these dam greedy cable companies are losing subscrbers..stop raising your prices would be a start..offer different cheaper cable tv,internet services, and combined services…heres an idea..offer a service like all your local channels and pick any 5 cable channels ( excluding movie/tv channels like hbo, starz) for $25 a month..u can get all your local channels via tv antenna so why pay for them through your cable provider?..i havent had cable in yrs and dont miss it.i have tv antenna and pay for 1 streaming app..companies keep raising there services and offer crappy service packages..also stop caving in into these networks when they threaten to stop airing over your network if they dont get a price hike..it all comes down to greed.

Cord cut over a dozen years ago. Used to have netflix and Amazon. Netflix became too woke and expensive, dropped them. same went for Amazon on the last price increase. I pay for zero streaming services. I get all content from free providers or DVD/Bluray rentals from the library. Gaming does not require high data rates, it needs low latency. Every year I renegotiate my cable internet rate to keep the price down. Starlink is over 2x what I pay for cable, never going to happen unless it drops to $50 or less a month, OTA is fine for local channels, it is crazy that services charge at least $20 a month for what is still free OTA.
