"Google TV" streaming device. Once upon a time, these were "Android TV" streaming devices, but Google of course had to re-brand the whole operating system. For folks who want access to "apps THEY want to use" rather than "whatever apps the device provides for them to use," Android TV and Google TV provide a vast array of options that other devices just don't give you.
It seems like if you want to mod something, you run with Google. If you just want a player, Roku. I personally very much prefer Roku's interface, but I wish they made it easer to actually see all the channel categories and see what's "New and Updated", which Roku screws around with and messes up every few months.
With the exception of a few apps, Google TV has everything Roku has, can run apps in the background(VPN, media servers, easily accepts external drives, control other devices outside of CEC and is much easier to side load apps and channels.
I own 7 Google TV devices, 4 of them onn streamers. They work the best for me. I still have a few rokus in service, they work better for my older family members.
I'm still on team Roku. Google TV has too much garbage on the homescreen. The main reason I've always preferred Roku was their super simple homescreen. Just a list of apps and no other crap cluttering up my screen. My GoogleTV devices are also pretty laggy compared to Roku. Often times there's a two or three second delay before a button press does anything.
Yes, but if you TRULY care about privacy, you can't run VPN on Roku. And you do know every app on Roku is tracking you, right? There are much, much better options than Roku if privacy is your thing.
It won't be because Anti trust laws are a joke with many loopholes. Google is everywhere but they are not the only one in any market. Look up how much AT&T owns actually . They should be broken up too. Especially since Mabell was broken up in the 70s. Did you know At&T owns warner brothers, HBO, and DC comics for example. Disney is a mega monoploy that has it's own police force. Lastly if the DOJ was going to breakup Google. They have to breakup Alphabet not Google. Which is who owns google
I have both Roku and Google TV streamers but I use the Roku the most. That being said I did find Google TV was better for me than Firestick because it was less crowded and a little more organized. We just use the Roku the most in our because it is the simplest with less to work through. I like both.😊
I think AT&T should spend money on protecting my PERSONAL DATA rather than on marketing and lawyers to keep the competition from making claims. I hadn't been a customer of AT&T (any of their companies) for more than 10 years and STILL got hit with having my PII data exposed.
I'm sticking with my Roku 4k stream stick as I don't need to recording feature or these TV streaming apps as I sticking with TH-cam and TH-cam music All this stuff that Google saying they are adding or changing to make Google TV better we have them already so nothing new with Google
In don't have a Roku TV just the device and I really like it....sticking with it because with this competition, you will prob see more features to be competitive
Yeah what the hell is the point of them? Do people really sit around comparing their badges? If somebody gets all the TH-cam badges all it means is they spent way too much time on it.
I often fall asleep watching TH-cam.... I'll have to try the sleep function. In the morning I'll look at my history and re-watch some things. Now I know where my strange dreams are coming from ;-)
I have a Hisense TV in my man cave that came with Google installed. My other TVs have Roku. I did not buy them with either of these in mind but got them because of TV price.
Seems that TH-cam broke their remove video from queue with recent update? I use Chromecast primarily for all apps, but use TH-cam more than others. Usually, I will play a video, add another to queue, then decide to watch a video later. Seems that last part is broken.😢
I'm still on PC. My parents have a Roku. I experimented with streaming players but gave up on them when I found that you can't install a full-fledged web browser on them with full functionality and the ability to install all of the same extensions to a browser like you can on PC. These things could be amazing if they could do real web browsing with ad blocking. Also, I could I could use a mouse and keyboard with a Firestick but there is no context menu.
Just purchased a Sony X90L Google TV. Put the Roku behind it as it was before. I like the way Roku Can add apps for other programming streams and control what I want.
After watching your vid about google tv I decided to give it a shot but after being asked to register it went down hill fast. To complete registration they require a credit card number. You should never have to enter a card number for a service that is supposedly ad sponsored even if they say we will never bill your card. I currently use a combination of a firestick and the interface on our smart tv's. Tried Roku, didn't like it.
The ONN Pro streamer is now my favorite one - it seems to be really solid and keeps up with even the crappiest of apps (I'm looking at you Paramount+).... Roku has been "dead to me" for several years now. Google TV (cast) still has issues although it's mostly around older smart TVs that went with low specs to begin with and updates that make things slow....
That is really hypocritical of AT&T to even say that. Don’t they run around telling people that they have the best nationwide wireless coverage? Doesn’t every phone company say they have the best nationwide coverage. They need to get over it and actually spectrum does have the fastest because I get 600mbps and they go up to a gig. So technically spectrum is not lying.
On most of my TV's I have both Roku, and Google TV ONN boxes/Official dongles, as Google TV has a few apps that Roku does not like the XTV app, and I like the interface/voice remotes on Google TV, but if you just want the basics, and a device to last a long time ROKU wins hands down.
"Fastest speed in more neighborhoods" When it comes to internet service, the only neighborhood I care about is the one I'm located in. What good does fastest speed in the rest of the world matter, when my neighborhood doesn't get it? Cell service is different, I travel about, and need good service in multiple places, but for internet service, I'm in a fixed location. I guess Spectrum thought they were selling cell service instead of internet service.
Dish TV/Buffet's OTA TV station - With Dish and DirecTV in 'Merger-Mode' I'd expect the contract with the TV station would be extended for a year, not fully re-negotiated. That way both parties can see what results from the merger and negotiate a new contract going forward or just end it at that point. I'll pretty sure part of the merger of Dish or DirecTV will involve re-negotiation of all these carriage contracts.
Don't local stations benefit from have their signal put into more homes? Why do they pay for transmitters and antenna towers to broadcast over the air if they don't benefit from getting their signal out there? Why aren't locals paying cable and apps to carry them?

I've had a Roku 3 for years. For $100 or more I could upgrade to a better Roku device. Or I could go to Walmart and try their onn4K Google TV box for $19.95. So I did so last year. It's as easy, if not easier, to use than the Roku. And half the screen is taken up by advertising like the Roku. I may never go back.
Lol, the NAD is part of the BBB? (That linked article says they are) The BBB being One of the biggest anti consumer businesses there is. Their entire model is a shakedown of businesses with the front of being "to inform customers" That article said that Spectrum did have proof, but just didn't want to fight about it. But, meh, either way on that whole thing.
Um... duh? Roku can't run VPN and has no cross-app integration. I'm not fan of Google, but Roku has been old-feeling for about 5 years, now, and isn't at all the "safe" from snooping. I unplugged the last of my Roku devices yesterday morning and won't look back.
I dont like having a box or stick. I like my tv to be a google tv or android tv. I just add a thumb drive to my 3.1 usb to add memory. And roku makes it difficult to add 3rd party apps.
The only thing keeping me on Fire TV is that it is built into my biggest TV. But I do have the ONN box on my second TV and love it, except for the lack of tactile feel on the remote. For what it does and how well, it's really nice. As for Roku, I had several Roku players back in the day. The WDTV Live was my first player but Roku was second. The Fire 4K sticks totally replaced Roku for me and I would never go back. Literally sorted out a junk closet last week and trashed all my Roku stuff. Not sorry.
So called smart TVs are rubbish as when I buy a TV new or second hand I look at what connections the TV has and I have a TV that has 2 scart sockets ,4 hdmi sockets,pc input ,tv tuner, composite sockets, rca connectors, pcyb sockets, head phone socket this is what i call a smart tv
Roku was never the best streaming player. It was the cheapest, hence its popularity. The Nvidia Shield is the best, followed by the Apple TV box. Hopefully, that is what Google is aiming for in their new streamer.

Same here.
Screw them. Just wait for their new feature injecting ads when you pause some other input. Not rolled out yet but they've filed for a patent.
Never tried google tv but roku works for me
With the exception of a few apps, Google TV has everything Roku has, can run apps in the background(VPN, media servers, easily accepts external drives, control other devices outside of CEC and is much easier to side load apps and channels.
I'm staying with Roku, too.

You can change the home screen on Google TV. Endless possibilities.
LoL, Roku have the same interface since 2005, Grandpa device
I'll stay with my roku
No thanks. I've got more than enough Google in my life already.
Exactly!
Yes, but if you TRULY care about privacy, you can't run VPN on Roku. And you do know every app on Roku is tracking you, right? There are much, much better options than Roku if privacy is your thing.
Exactly, I will always stick to Roku cuz it's cheap
Roku TV add an antenna result in a very good EPG.
OMG I wish they would get rid of shorts or at least give you the option to get rid of them freaking hate short
Hoping Google will be broken up by DOJ.

Yes because government makes everything better.

Roku for me, 4 ultras in my house with TH-cam TV, so glad I got rid of Xfinity.
I'm sticking with my Roku 4k stream stick as I don't need to recording feature or these TV streaming apps as I sticking with TH-cam and TH-cam music

Badges are ridiculously stupid! I'm not a child and I get them on Facebook. I just delete them. Badges are like smiley faces in elementary school.
Now I know where my strange dreams are coming from ;-)
I can’t believe that they’re saying Rukku is the best payment device. It is not in my opinion. I will stick fire TV.
What?
I have a Hisense TV in my man cave that came with Google installed. My other TVs have Roku. I did not buy them with either of these in mind but got them because of TV price.
My cable company replaced their over the cable service in some forms, with a Google streaming player and an app of theirs.
I will stay with Roku thank you, Google already has its nose in enough of my business the way it is !!
Then you shouldnl't be using Roku, either... they track everything, and you can't natively run a VPN on Roku devices. But you CAN on Google devices.
I have used all the major ones, and Roku is the simplest to use and has a great remote. I was not impressed with Google at all.
Roku is King. Google is too proprietary. I have International streams and Google supports none.
International streams🤔
Seems that TH-cam broke their remove video from queue with recent update?
I use Chromecast primarily for all apps, but use TH-cam more than others. Usually, I will play a video, add another to queue, then decide to watch a video later. Seems that last part is broken.😢

Has there ever been "truth in advertising". I think not. Buyer beware.
How did you get Twitch on your Roku. What code did you use.
No thanks on Google TV.
I have 3 tv steaming devices. Alexa Fire Cube, Onn Box Pro and Roku. My family all prefers The Fire Cube, easier for the needs my family has.
Just purchased a Sony X90L Google TV. Put the Roku behind it as it was before. I like the way Roku Can add apps for other programming streams and control what I want.
Thank you Cord Cutters News. :)
I had the Onn 4k pro, but I unintentionally bricked it. So, I’m back to the 3rd gen FireTV cube (I had it put away when I bought the Onn).
How does one unintentionally brick that device? That really shouldn't be something someone can just randomly do. And if you can, that's a problem.
@@LatitudeSky It’s a long story and I won’t bore you with the details. It was my fault and not the device.
I have both Apple TV and Roku. I really like Roku better. Fire TV is junk. Got rid of it.
I used to be a big time Fire TV person but now I find my self using Google TV and Apple TV the most.
No goggle

Have had a Roku, a Nividia, Google, and Fire for years and only use the Fire.
You can do more with Google tv than Roku certain apps you can get or find
I have never seen it or heard of it. To judge, I need to see GoogleTV streaming device REVIEWED
The only thing I do not like about my new TCL Google TV is the inability to record OTA TV to a USB flash drive even though the TV has a USB port.
I plug a thumb drive into my USB and record to it. Your tv's USB has to be 3.0 or higher or it won't integrate with tour tv's existing memory
My tv is a Sony
@@hughjass4829 My tv has usb 2.0. I appreciate the info.
I have a 4k Google OS Hisense. I still use, and prefer, my 4k Roku Ultra as my primary interface.
I'm a Firestick girl because I sideload free sites.

Is Google TV the same as Crome cast?
Yeah it pretty much is. I seen they are not going to call it Chromecast anymore it's all going to be called Google tv.
No surprise Roku is really locked down. My next Smart TV/Player will definitely be Google TV

TH-cam needs to add 3 X speed. 2 X speed is not fast enough (especially for commercials).
Question for all. What is the fastest playback speed that you can still understand the video? Thank you in advance.

I'm very happy with Roku, all of my tvs is Roku,
I use an LG TV and like its operating system
Roku has great simplicity but lacks in the closed app environment. That's where Roku lost me for fire TV and Google TV!
Google is taking over with Auto as well, newer vehicles are coming with Android Auto pre installed
4 Apple TV Streamers in this house. I have one Roku for travel.
Ya I am all googled out😢.
Google will own everything soon
I've had a Roku 3 for years. For $100 or more I could upgrade to a better Roku device. Or I could go to Walmart and try their onn4K Google TV box for $19.95. So I did so last year. I haven’t like the idea of roku not supporting Bluetooth

Left Amazon and went to Google Tv.
Why? Fire Stick is MUCH better…
I have Google TV. I like it

I want nothing to do with Google in anything.
It’s just Google propaganda

Roku cannot be. I don’t even like Roku I think fire TV is better than Roku. That’s my opinion.
I've had Google TV since it began and it's been my TV mainstay since...I love it👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤!!!!!
