Oh one of the best instructions ever. And I waited too long in the season☹️😖 I'll have to send this to future me in the calender next spring. thank you so much from Stockholm Sweden 🤗👍🥳
I grafted a lot of bare root fruit trees with grafting tape , after pulling the tape tight I rip the last remaining half inch piece with my thumb and use that to seal of the top end , it stretches enough for a few turns. Very informative and interesting video , always worth watching even if you know the technique
Good video on whip and tongue - the camera close up on the cuts were good enough to see everything! He's right about trying to root fruit tree cuttings .. I've played around with them a bit when I have leftovers from pruning, and they really don't do very well; better to get a root system established first, then graft! Beeswax .. hmm. I think I feel better about that than the pruning paint that I have been using to seal cuts. I'll give that a try!
Sean, thank you for sharing. I am on a cruise watching this video and I had just gotten to Akiva's chapter on grafting today. It is a great book and I have enjoyed reading it so far on this trip. I can't wait to put the practices in play when I get home.
My grafts look pretty rough but they generally still work out. Nice to have something to work towards but knowing you won't have a ton of failure on your way!
Great Video! Don't be too hard on yourselves :) There is so much great info in your words not just your actions.......AWESOME BOOK as well! Thanks to you both for sharing SOME of your amazing knowledge! Cheers
This year I am going to try something I haven’t before. Instead of cutting scions in winter, I am going to take them right before dormancy break. This is also when I prefer to prune. Idea being wound stays open for shorter duration. Anyways..Instead if cutting scions early and having to store, I’m thinking of taking them a few days before grafting.
If you make the tongue cut in the rootstock at about mid point and the cut in the scion at about 2/3 they seem to fit nicer for me without getting the ends stand out.
The timing of this video is perfect for me- I’m planning to graft some edible fruiting varieties onto an ornamental plum this spring. Question: would you recommend any variations to this technique when grafting cuttings on to a fully mature tree? Thanks!
I can offer up that you may want to search 'top working' as a grafting concept. It wouldn't use whip and tongue, but rather 'cleft grafting'. I've done it a bit and can say with novice skills it works pretty well. I plan to document it this spring, but you can watch a few videos and give it a go I bet!
Great video, thanks for this Sean! I was looking at foraging books earlier and saw this one on trees. I noticed the name of the author was Akiva which for me is not a common name, so it's easy to remember. I was wondering if the author is the same guy as your friend Akiva. And yes, he is! I can't wait to get his book, learn from it and practice! Thank you again for sharing this. 🤗🌱🤗
Lovely to see Akiva on your channel. I found your channel true his :) Question: Why does he cut the scions so short after grafting? Wouldnt it work just to leave the scions in full length to get a larger tree fast? Or does it need to be cut to focus energy to heal the grafting? Btw I would also love to see a Q and A with you and Akiva :) My 2 favorite garden/growing channels.
You definitely want to cut them short so they focus all their energy into just one or two buds. A Q&A with Akiva would be a lot of fun, I'll mention it to him.
Thank You so much Akiwa! now I see where I made the mistake. The Trees of Power is a great book, I have it at home! Greetings from Slovakia ;) Your next book does not ship to EU.. selling pdfs?
Best grafting video I seen to date. Please have him back. Thanks.
Good teaching abilities from Akiva.
Thank you so much for the video! I was really glad for the "ugly" graft because it looked just like mine, and now I'm hopeful it'll actually make it 😂
Akiva says he gets weird in front of the camera but he really delivers information well. I genuinely feel confident enough to start.
That is awesome!
😊🦃😊
yeah, he's natural - way better than people who sound like used car sales men. That's not really what people start growing stuff to be exposed to lol.
I miss seeing the buddy Akiva on your channel. Yet another wonderful soul involved with your work.
So nice to see Akiva don't see to many videos from him 😊🦇👍🐓🌻
I know a lot of folks would hope to see more videos from him.
Very helpful video on Grafting Apples. Thanks!
It's such a pleasure to watch an expert at work. Thank you, Akiva!
Thanks for taking the time to explain your thoughts.
Thank you Akiva.I really enjoyed your presentation.

Absolutely the best technique, thanks!
Hi Sean, how about a live Q and A with Akiva sometime on all things trees, and whatever else might come up?
That would be a fun session, I'll have to see if we can get him in on that. We're coming into our super busy time of year here now.
Very skillful man who shown us in details what to do. Many thanks for the video, very useful indeed. I have learned lots from it.
Gotta love Akiva!
Hi, thx for the vid. Btw I’ve bought the book and I’ve learned a lot. Looking forward to more videos like that
Learning from a true master. Thank you for this great video.
I listened to the book on Audible a couple of weeks ago. It really exceeded my expectations and wish I had read it sooner. Thanks for sharing!
Cool to see Akiva. I hope to see a video from him about his whole nursery setup and how he started out. Now I got to find some grafting tape.

Alright Sean! I love it when you have Akiva on your channel... like the special guest! Have his book and love it too! Good stuff! Keep it coming!
I just did my first apple and plum grafts last week.
I hope they grow incredibly well for ya!
Both of these guys make good product. I have some of their perennials in my food forest.
Awesome!
Best description I have seen. Thanks.
Thank you!
Awesome video!
Great guy and great tutorial. I've already done whip and tongue grafts before but I could still learn a lot from this video in terms of technique.
That’s awesome and a great skill to know. Thank you for sharing!!
Awesome video, thanks for bringing us the good stuff!

Really great information, thank you
Very useful video. What a cool guy.
Nice going
Great book. Got some osage oranges from twisted tree several years ago and they are doing great.
I bet. His trees generally grow incredibly well for folks.

I've tried rooting apple and boy is it not something that wants to root!

Great video! Would love to hear more - how do you choose and prepare the root stock etc
I just did my grafting yesterday not as pretty as those but fingers crossed☺& I did same whip & Tongue too ☺ thanks for that

Very cool. Many thanks !
Loving this 🎉
Thank you
That's awesome thanks for sharing ❤️🌿
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing
Looking forward to grafting on the 100 fruit trees we just put in.
Thanks for the info. Did cold stratification this year like Akiva's videos show, using buckets. Found both your channels from a Kevin Wallace video.
Thank you. It was great. Would you consider filming his nursery? Also more videos like this one.
Check out his youtube channel, search 'twisted tree' or look for link in description, he's got some nice tours, and we'll do more over time.

I hope that works well for you, seems reasonable.

And the books arrived today!🤗🤗🤗
Question: can u whip and tongue, stock and Scion with fresh stock cuttings? Meaning the stock doesn’t have roots yet?
I think you'd want good quality, nice gauge, rooted root stock to graft onto...
Once you finish your bench grafting and you store the trees, should the sand or sawdust be wetted and kept moist until spring?
You want it moist enough to be keeping things alive, yes. Like a wrung out sponge.
Can apples be successfuly grafted in the fall?

@@edibleacres Thank you for the swift reply. Now I know the reason, instead of just guessing. :)

why do you need to cut the scion after grafted? Thank you
You want the scion part to be quite small on the root stock so it can focus its growth on one bud or at most 2
What time of year does Akiva make his cuttings?
Takes scion wood later winter, stored very cool and moist, in sawdust in a root cellar.
@@edibleacres Thanks!
Hi
Camera shy ☺️
Sir can I have Akiva's WhatsApp number, please?
