    to sum it up.
    dropping a 30fps to 24fps timeline its called conforming where u streched 30fps to meet 24fps timeline.
    while interpreting means that a 30 fps will have consider all frame in 24 fps. so it will have 5 more frames in a 24fps producing more smooth footage.

    I was about to return my Ronin Rs2 because of the judder I was getting when panning left and right. Then I realized that the issue wasn't the Ronin but the 24 fps. Then I saw this video and it was a blessing. Thanks Tom, you've made my day

    I found time warp in AE to be highly effective with this. In a 23.97fps comp take 29.97 fps footage and increase it by 125% (time stretch) to match frame rate from 29.97 to 23.976, then decrease by 80% using time warp to get back to its correct speed. You might want to leave a copy of footage above so you know how long to stretch time warp to.

    I have to give this a try. I get very bad jutter / jitter when panning with GH5 sometimes even using 60FPS footage. I can play it smoothly out of camera to an external monitor and it is smooth as butter, put it into Premiere Pro CC and let the jutters begin.

    Really helpful video, have you tried (after interpret the footage) to right click on it and go again on interpret and select Optical flow? you could have choose also Frame Blending from there without going to after effect. Obviously I am saying that with Premiere pro 2019 and 2020 not sure about the older versions. Just a little trick I learnt that usually does the job.

      So is there no other way to put 30fps on a 24 fps timline?
      Shot a wedding and my second shooter left their framerate at 30 while mine is at 24.

    • @TomFlink
      @TomFlink  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can certainly put the 30fps footage into a sequence that is 24fps just by inserting it into the timeline. It will drop every 5th frame to make it fit. I can't tell you that this will make a big difference, but you can try rendering the 30fps footage at 24fps first using the "Use Maximum Render Quality" checkbox during export. There is some information that suggests this will improve the footage when changing frame rates. Hope this helps.

    great info.....have 80D and trying to film outdoor activity....think 30 at 30 is better or do 30 reduce to 24 to go on TH-cam???/

    • @TomFlink
      @TomFlink  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really just comes down to the look you want. 30 will always be better for pans and action just due to the frame rate. A lot of people are shooting in 30 as they're not trying to get a film look and don't mind the video look. But if your intended output is 24, it is better to shoot in 24 unless there is something specific you are trying to accomplish (like this video). Shooting in 24 fps with the proper shutter (using the 180 rule, i.e. double the frame rate) will look better as it gives the right motion blur for 24. Shooting in 30 and converting to 24 will not do this. But hey, this is all about technique and look. On TH-cam you may not notice or care. I tend to get hung up in the technical stuff, when it's really the audio and story that people remember or notice.

      Tom Flink but don't forget that there is judder too when 24 fps content plays on a regular 60 Hz monitor/display (most of the displays nowadays). 3:2 pulldown in inevitable in this case. So 24 fps definitely is a bad choice for TH-cam.

    guess it can be done (to prevent videos going longer) just interpret to lower fps to match sequence settings, and then speed up via rate streth tool in PP CC to keep time lengh correct, also right click on this piece and set frame blending to optical flow, guess do same as time warp in AE, or even better.

    Is there any harm in shooting 30 or 60 fps in 4k, and then in FCPX setting the timeline to 24fps? Will this cause jittering/choppy video?

    • @TomFlink
      @TomFlink  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      By itself, shooting in 30 or 60 fps and setting the timeline to 24fps will not cause choppy video. The Judder described above is actually a function of camera movement (pan) and the fps used at that time it was shot. Based on what you describe I would just make sure your shutter speed is following the 180 degree rule (shutter speed is double the fps) as this could have the biggest impact on jittering or choppy video when converted to 24fps on the timeline. Because, FCPX will drop frames to play it at normal speed. That said, if you want smooth slow motion then you always shoot at higher frame rates.

    Hi Tom, what happens to the audio of the 30fps footage if we use this assume frame rate?

    • @TomFlink
      @TomFlink  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The audio will be impacted by the frame rate change. So, this is not effective if there is audio that needs to be in sync with the video. You could unlink the audio track to avoid. If it's just background and environment sound this should work.

    When you turn a 30fps clip into a 24fps clip, the way it slows the framerate is by deleting a frame every five frames. This is what causes it to have a jittery effect. Shooting at 24fps is always the better option (for me anyway)

    • @diman4010
      @diman4010 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ...but when you watch 24 fps on a regular monitor/display which operates at 60 Hz, 12 frames will be doubled and 12 frames will be trippled in the conversion process, eg. the first frame will be doubled, the second will be trippled, and so on. That causes judder as well. The only way to avoid that - shoot and export at 30/60 without any conforming or speedups/slowdowns in post.

    i love 24 fps, for THIS REASON : Slow Motion. some how we prefer 24 fps because for example if we want maximum slow motion but we only have maximum of 60 fps camera. with 60 fps original footage, we can put it to 24 fps play at 40 percent slow speed. 40 percent is more slow motion, if compare to use 50 fps put into 25 fps play we only get 50 percent slow speed. 40 percent speed VS 50 percent speed for sure is better 40 percent.

    So you want it to be 24p, but that looks objectively inferior to 30p. But you cant 30p because videography cult says so. So you 30p to 24p, to make your 24p look like 30p, but not have it actually be 30p.... Oh the hoops... Why 24p at all? Because film school said it's cinematic? The majority of devices your footage is going to be viewed on dont match their refresh rate (60hz) to your footage, resulting in 3:2 pull down judder aka STUTTER.

  • @AllenRivota27
    @AllenRivota27 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's not rocket science you're losing every 5th frame that's the judder it's the missing frame again why are you trying to render in 224p what do you think that's going to do for you?

      Allen Kennedy ... Thanks for the comment. I debate the 24p or 30p topic all the time. For some reason I started shooting most of my video in 24p. My intention with this video was to contrast the two ways of transcoding a video of one frame rate into another, in Premiere. That is, dropping it on the timeline or transcoding the footage before adding it to the timeline. It seems to make a difference to me. Thanks!

    • @GifCoDigital

      It has nothing to do with film. It gives it a more cinematic look because of the extra motion blur you get at 24p. Are you pretending to be someone who knows what they are talking about? Becuse you DONT know what your talking about.
