@@IlIIlIIIIIlBrianSt0rm so why is it that craftsmanship produced in poorer countries are expected to be cheaper meanwhile you pay thousands of dollars for 'handcrafted' a item which all you need it for is watch time?
@@Batman-jc8to Because generally those poorer countries don't have access to the same materials or a history of craftsmanship for the given thing. For example clothing from South East Asia ars generally cheaper, thinner and less durable than clothing from the West. Where as Technology is considerably better than in the East, along with appreciation for History and culture. Asia, Europe and the USA have vastly different approaches to certain crafts. It depends on what you want
@@Batman-jc8to that's how the world works. Rich people don't know what to do with their money. So they pay for anything that they cannot make themselves, and because they are rich, people want to get the highest price for the dumbest sh!t. That's why auctions exist. It's to get the highest price from the richest person for the most basic product. Some people have found memories of those items, so they end up paying any price for those memories rather than the product itself. Note that the Rolex that was sold for 17 million was sold at an auction rather than a shop. Therefore, in a rich area, people will generally pay more for the basic stuff. But in those poor countries, the demand for their products is from the middle class and the poor. They also produce in bulk, so they are catering for a different market. They say that it takes one year to make a Rolex for example. In those poorer countries, a year on a tiny product means a year without food. But if they produce products every month, then there's food every month. Hope you get a picture of what I'm trying to say. The mindset of poor people is not the same as the mindset of rich people.
MY father grew up with Rolex . The Daytona lacked a 24 hour dial , that most car drivers preferred , the one that had a dial purposely for the 24 hours of Le Man's was the Dan Henry , a super elegant sports watch , maybe more elegant than the Daytona. The Pepsi Gmt II was the one I kept , for comfort , not bulky but inconveniently sharp at the end of luggs, but later after 2 years it needed a rotor and the luminosity was gone , done with ! it never glowed ever in the dark , and a high percentage of them get internal corrosion and are ridiculously without sense, more expensive . the other I loved was a Seiko skx 007 which had a bright glow and never needed repair or overhaul after 17 years ! So to my opinion Rolex is super overpriced for its funtionality.

@@timwynn6079 While Rolex recommends a service every 10 years, in reality, the watch can go 100 years without being serviced if you do no damage to it. Rolex truly is an elite watch on many levels. While a King Seiko is a very good watch, the caliber is not the same. All that being said, most people don't "need" a Rolex. It is a status symbol to most.
100% correct. I had a fight in which a person throwed a puch on me i used g shock to block that and his hands pained so hard . Nothing happened to me and g shock
My 1675 is 45 years old (it was purchased new) and to this day it still runs well. A Rolex watch was never cheap to buy, but they were much more affordable a few decades ago. A steel Sub or GMT Master in the early 70s was less than $500 USD. Today they retail for upwards of $10K (if you can get one).
I am not an expert in luxury brands, but they do really put time in the quality. My dad still wear one today which he bought in the 70s when it was not that luxury.
As a watch person, I can tell you that for $8-10,000 with a Rolex you are getting no precious metal or jewel content whatsoever, just a steel watch with a self-winding movement similar to what other brands sell for roughly half. The extra cost of a Rolex is entirely attributable to the fact that the movement is made by Rolex and not bought from an outside supplier. This means that Rolex has some additional pricing power and essentially a monopoly on the movements. However, for a Swiss-made mechanical watch with an in-house movement, it is on the bottom of the class, not the top. All other Swiss watches with in-house movements cost more, not less. Rolex is entry-level and accessible by most ordinary people with a credit card, and that’s also a reason why they can price aggressively. Too bad this vid could not shed any light on these demonstrable realities.
You’re actually right and wrong. The lower end Rolexes with nothing but steel can be owned for about $6K. Once you get into about $10K+, you can get diamonds and different types of gold although it all depends on your budget and how much you’re willing to pay. You can obviously end up paying tens of thousands for one.
Entry level Rolex watches are indeed priced at the lower end among similar products. But if you call Rolex a cheap brand, you clearly haven’t heard of something called a baguette set pearl master
I have a Seiko 5 my mother gave me back in 1990, it was pre owned like new. I worn that watch through high school, and part of my early 20's, the only thing I had to replace was the strap. I still wear it once in a while, it is an automatic, as soon as I pick it up, it starts running. You can get a Seiko 5 for less than $100.00
You can buy a Yugo for pretty cheap too and it works most of the time and gets you from point A to point B. If you're looking for just practicality, your Seiko is a waste of money too. You carry a phone like everyone else in the world, it will tell you the time. Rolex is now a luxury item. You might want to learn the definition of "luxury".
I was gifted a Casio in 1998 in high school. It's still going strong, not to mention the sh** me and this watch have been through together over all these years!
I have my late uncle's Submariner from the 1960's that still works perfectly. However, the real reason they are so expensive was the Wall Street YUPPIES from the 80's turning them into a status symbol. They are overpriced; but Goddamn are they well made.
Mo Uddin I don’t know, man. I’m really into hiking, cycling, diving, etc. so I’ve gotten plenty of use out of my smart watch the two years I’ve had it. No regrets. When I go out to bars/clubs, I slap a tan leather band on it and girls seem to like the style too.
If you need 10 years to make 8k then you should look for a better paying job. I'm a middle class and capable of saving 8k in less than 6 months. Even less if I don't travel or invest into stockmarkets.
The Daytona was actually one of Rolex's least popular watches initially, selling poorly, it was originaly called the Cosmograph as Rolex hoped that the nasa space mission would endorse it as their official watch. The title went to Omegas Speedmaster. It later became Daytona piggy backing on race pedigree hence Newman wearing it. I doubt anyone would pay that amount for a Daytona again. Charity auctions always go well over blown as they did in this case.
For real. Rolex has been around since 1905, if it takes one year to make a single watch, how is Rolex able to make different styles and large quantities at too? _03.06.19_
Seiko watches are not as comfortable nor do they have screw down crowns to make them into a dive watch. Rolex are a unique watch in that they can do almost anything and be worn on almost any occasion. Grand Seiko watches are really well made, look fantastic and are reliable but they are not a do anything watch. There simply are no other options on the market place to Rolex.
The "lower end" of the spectrum? According to who? I like the looks of Rolex better than the even more expensive brands, and they keep time perfectly! To ME, they are the highest of the upper spectrum in looks and quality.
One reason Rolex watches are so expensive is they make so few each year that you can never find them, even at their certified dealers, for the MSRP price. If you want one you have to be on a waiting list for at least a year, and usually more. Which means if you really want even their cheaper models you either have to wait or pay a 2 or 3 time MSRP premium.
From all Swiss luxury watch manufacturers Rolex is producing a million watches per year, which is twice more than Omega and 20 times more than any other popular brand. It's that people overhype popular models like colorful variations of Sub/GMT and Daytona and that's where waiting list goes crazy and greedy gray market takes a chunk. The rest of the models are fairly available. To satisfy the demand they would need to either invest in expansion, or in transforming existing production lines to produce specific models. Which is time, money and energy consuming. That way Rolex gets its cut and keeps existing clients happy, as long as bubble holds its value.

So expensive? Only people who don’t know much about watches would say that. Rolex is on the entry level of luxury timepieces. But the short answer is 50% engineering (they are indestructible), 50% marketing.
Forever watch? LOL. They require EXPENSIVE servicing and repairs are OBSCENELY marked up both in labor and cost of parts. And before you think you can buy it second hand and just take it to your local watchmaker think again. Rolex have begun a move towards using parts that are too expensive for watchmakers to purchase independently. It's a clever push towards roping you into a long term commitment into Rolex servicing which will cost you a bundle. I expect you'll see a lot of watches sold before the owner has to do a major servicing. And the resale on their best selling models is nothing spectacular, you're losing money the minute you walk out the door. Rolex make a quality product that has a reputation established through very aggressive marketing, 50 years ago they were quiet affordable. But were never in the league of Breguet, Patek, Vacheron, Audemars Piguet and most recently A. Lange & Sohne. My big gripe with Rolex is that these watches at the end of the day are mass produced timepieces.. over a million a year are made, there really is nothing exclusive about them. You're paying for a mass produced watch as if it were a limited quantity. And there's little if any innovation like we see at Zenith where they really are trying to move the ball forward in horology and not just offering "ground breaking" bezel colors. Honestly I'd rather have a Grand Seiko Spring Drive than having another ubiquitous Submariner on the street.
jim g. Rolex service depends on what they have to do. Usually changing parts, oiling, polishing and precision tests it costs you around 500-600€ which is pretty fair
Andromeda Spectrum the only reason why they‘re doing this is because of the stability of the used market. Rolex are some of the most stable watches you can own. It depends on the model, but because of the waiting list, the used prices are even higher than the listing prices. I bought an Explorer 2 and had to wait 3 months (which is completely okay) and I could sell it any time with 1.000€ profit 🙌🏽 You can‘t do that with your Seiko ;-)
In 1994 while on vacation in Hawaii I purchased a Tag Heuer. I was looking at a $5,000 Rolex.. beautiful but for that price..no chance. The jeweler showed me Tag divers watch .. very similar in appearance. He asked... do you want a superlative timepiece and a status symbol that will last 75 to 100 years.. or can you be happy with a merely excellent timepiece that will give you 50 to 75 years... $900.. vs. $5000? I went with the Tag... except for two occasions to have it cleaned and checked, I've worn it every day. I've never regretted my choice and I have always respected the advice and the integrity of the sales person.
Take care of a watch and it will last for many, many years. No matter the brand, as long as we're not talking Walmart cheapie watches. Rolex are exceptional, superlative timepieces and they have ALWAYS been status symbols. A lot of the general public doesn't even know what a Tag Heuer is. My Timex Ironman is as accurate, offers many more features, and I never ever remove it - be it swimming, mountain climbing or gliding - it takes any pounding and keeps ticking. But I do have to change the battery about every 5 years. All for $60.
The reason Rolex keeps the number of any model produced per year is a core part of their marketing and sales: intentionally reduce supply or give the market the impression that there is an under supply to increase price/demand. De Beers utilized the exact same sales model to fictionally give the market the impression that there was an under-supply of diamonds when fact is they just stockpiled them to raise prices and demand.
I bought one new, a GMT Master, in 1991, for $2,500. It was quite off, time-wise, but they fixed that under warranty. I only had to have it cleaned once, in 2006. I wear it every day, and it still looks great. I may need to have it serviced again this year, if history is anything to go by.
1:44 Ultimately it's expensive because it would not impart social prestige to the wearer if it weren't (that's why it must be recognizable at twenty feet). If you want an actual "superlative chronometer", go to Wal-Mart and buy a Casio watch for less than $50. The quartz movement keeps better time, a cell phone does even better because the time display is linked to the National Bureau of Standards and never needs to be set or wound.

Some of the points raised in this short piece would have slipped by the uninformed. Rolex makes approximately 800k watches per year. The idea that it takes a year to produce one watch is histerical.
A lot of products take a long time to produce, including mass-produced ones like watches and electronics.

My 1976 Seiko automatic 6306 still runs like a dream. Cost around $100 back then , they sell for $1200 today.
👌
👍
can you then explain why it's so hard to get retail submariners ?

If they were indestructible, there wouldn't be guys making a living repairing them.
jason starek I’ve never seen someone try to purposely break a Rolex lmao
More like 40% engineering, 40% marketing, 20% restricting stock
I heard rolex service is a whopping 1000 dollar? I payed for my breitling service 530 euros/ $600.
