HOW IT'S MADE: Rolex Watches

  • Everyone watching this episode on How It’s Made has at least once wondered what it is about Rolex that makes it so unique to any other watch brand. As we all know by now, Rolex is a private and independently running entity, unlike most other companies.
It is really a rare occurrence that Rolex even allows any stranger into its hallowed halls, but we bring you authentic information from their manufacturing locations and let you in our first-hand experiences to know more about how Rolex makes their famous watches.
Rolex has built its own universe with a personalized set of laboratories and whatnot. Their keen and detailed attitude towards manufacturing some of the best timepieces since 1905 has earned them respect, admiration, value, and reputation from across the globe.
This video is going to be about all the things that you need to know about Rolex watches if you are the kind who likes knowing the mechanics of how things work. Before we munch into the best section of this video, if you are a first-time viewer of the channel, make sure you smack that subscribe button and also the notification bell!
What Makes Rolex’s Timepieces Unique With Respect To The Metals Used In the Body?
Many of you are already accustomed to the fact that the manufacturer uses a kind of steel that is unique to only Rolex. As we all know, steel comes in various types and degrees and most watch manufacturers make use of a type of stainless steel known as the 316L.
Currently, all the steel that is used for Rolex watches is of the 904L steel type. So, what makes it special? While many brands continue to use the 316L type till now, Rolex has already launched watches made of 904L steel for the first time in 1988 with a few versions of the Sea-Dweller.
Apart from being more rust and corrosion-resistant as well as somewhat harder than other steels, what really makes these watches unique is the ability to take and hold polishes very well. If you have wondered why the body of a Rolex watch looks unique as many of us did, it is very much owed to how Rolex has learned and emulated the same to perfection.
Rolex Has Its Own Research-Intensive Science Labs
Knowing how far Rolex has come over the decades maintaining or bettering their quality with every passing year, it should not be surprising that they have their own personalized research laboratories. Rolex has, in fact, not one, but a number of different and well-equipped science labs working continuously at their various facilities.
The purpose of investing so much time and money in these labs isn’t just for futile reasons such as to research new watches or things that may go better into watches, but also to research various avenues that can make the manufacturing process more effective and efficient.
They have their personalized chemistry labs. When asked, Rolex stated that the lab is devoted to the development and research processes for oils as well as lubricants that can be used in the timepieces during the manufacturing process.
The lab rooms are equipped with multiple electron microscopes as well as a few gas spectrometers. With the help of these, the researchers are able to see an extremely close look at the metals and other materials in order to investigate the process of machining and manufacturing techniques.
These large areas that are dedicated to only research are mighty impressive. These are used purposefully on a regular basis to prevent, repair, or remedy possible problems. One of the best things about their labs is the stress test room.
This is the room wherein different aspects of the final product like watch movements as well as cases go through a process of simulated wear and abuse with the aid of custom-made machines and robots.
Timepieces And Movements Are Always Hand-Assembled And Tested Multiple Times
One of the common myths about the watch manufacturer is that machines are programmed to develop the watches. The reason behind the said rumor that has become so pervasive is due to the fact that, traditionally, Rolex did not respond or comment much on this.
However, the fact of the matter is that Rolex watches enjoy the warmth of hands-on human attention. However, it is important to know that the company uses machines. In fact, it currently possesses high-end, in-vogue watch-making machinery in the world.
Some of the key tasks accomplished by the semi-automated machinery include filing, sorting, cataloging, and applying the right pressure to fix pins and align micro parts. In addition to this, these carry out ultra-delicate procedures such as the type of care you want a machine to execute. Beginning from Rolex movements to bracelets are congregated by hand.
It is definitely an understatement to even think that Rolex is crazy in terms of quality control. A key theme involved with the manufacturing process is checking, rechecking over and over again.

Great video. I have only owned one Rolex, a SS/Gold Datejust purchased new in 1994. Since that time, it has been on my wrist every day, having been worn regardless of conditions, running the gamut from Black tie events to diving, and an enormous amount of extreme manual labor. It has only been serviced one time under my ownership, about 23 years ago. Amazingly, it still keeps time to within 5 secs/day. In short, it has been my constant companion, and, even though I have abused it, it has, not even once stopped working nor fallen off my wrist. It will soon become an heirloom, as I'm giving it to my 27 year old son. It was even on my wrist the day I watched him come into this world. I would say my Rolex's history is a pretty good testament to the durability and value of the brand.

@@antonmarkov1635 its true 👍. When I think back, I realize what a great deal it was...i paid $3700 for my Rolex [ss and gold], and could easily get $5000 for it today... Essentially I've made money by wearing it all these years. And when I add in what I would have spent on cheap watches thru the years? Holy moly, I'm sure that would have added up to several thousands of dollars. And I got to wear a Rolex all that time [not that I'm materialistic, mind you, but, I'm just sayin]. Win-win situation for sure!

Personally, since excellence is a compelling theme and interest to me, kudos to the company for focusing so seriously on being the best. The theme of proper integration of human work and machine work is one that cuts across many industries including my own.

Oystersteel or I 904L is actually SOFTER than the 316L stainless steel most other watch manufacturers use. Rockwell hardness of 904L is 90 but it’s 95 for 316L. Major error. This was quite an irritating video because of the inaccuracies and also because it was implying Rolex are superior to all other watch brands. There are many more sophisticated and luxurious mechanical watches out there than Rolex. One thing Rolex does do better than most though is to not have any real weaknesses. The watches are extremely robust and reliable as well as being luxurious.

1,050,000 watches per year, 29,000 employees = 36 watches per employee per year. However most employees will be admin, sales, management etc, so perhaps as a guess 10,000 people are hands on making rolex. Therefore 105 watches per employee per year is about one watch every 2 days. 29,000 with average wage of £30k would be £900million and turnover at 8 billion CHF. Estimated cost if production £500 for a £5000 watch, with the gold content of the sold gold watches at approx £9k. All figures are estimates and gladely differ to Rolex if figures are inaccurate.

@@randalljames730 a watch's quality is determined by multiple factors, including the movement's craftsmanship and the sturdiness of the case material. Rolex has very good quality, but not worth the crazy prices. Compare with a Breguet, where the movement has much better finishing, and the case made with more finesse. Or compare a Rolex with a Zenith, which has a better movement for cheaper. Something else: a watch's value and worth is not just based on it as a product but also on the brand's worth. Rolex's worth is largely based on the crazy hype it commands, when to be quite frank they haven't really innovated or done anything new in a while. Compare Rolex with brands like Moser, Parmegiani or Vacheron Constantin that are always trying to push the limits of horology, and it's a bit of a shame that the most famous luxury watch brand only plays it safe with its (admittedly very good) product.

youd be surprise the name alone is what really drives the demand. yes they do have there own materials etc but the hype is always made by the people.

They don't MAKE gold! They blend a gold alloy! All they are doing is taking 24ct gold and adding a certain amount of Copper and Silver to create the blend which is 18ct.

Despite people's comments, we all have to admire Rolex. They take great pride in their brand and control every aspect of production to ensure consistent quality. They have a policy of continuous improvement and have to be one of the best brands in the world today. If I had the option to work for a watch company, it would have to be Rolex. Its a shame that in the UK and USA, we never get the same long term philosophy with brands because everything is driven by short term gains in share prices and short term profitability targets!

I will need to do more research on this. Please send the Rolex (any model is fine, including the very top of the line) to my address for comprehensive testing over the next 5 or 6 decades. I promise to include pictures of the watch surrounded by beautiful women at parties, and the report will be written with the most amazing adjectives I can google.

The whole video: shameless advertising for the overpriced Rolex watches, but not showing the manufacturing process.
And then at 2:44 showing a completely unrelated blood test lab.
Also, the actual footage from the factory is filmed with a potato.
    Well done!
