I have 3 or 4 kneeboards. I was trying to find one that I liked using with an iPad. I'm glad that you mentioned the kneeboard iPad / head down thing. It's not a good idea. My iPad is on a RAM mount, off to the left, and about 1/2 way between yoke level and eye level in a C172. I had to do some minor lathe work on the RAM backplate but it works great now.
When I did IFR training (on a Pterodactyl) GPS was brand new, charts were paper, and iPads didn't exist (I'm glad that they do). I used a kneeboard then and have stuck with it. I keep a couple of pens in my pocket too :) I like Josh's pads too.

I came here to see how the iPad worked with this particular knee pad. I am very disappointed that you didn’t show it. 👎

Sorry, I just hate having my head down to look at iPad on thigh.

Dan, you bastard. I was just about to do a Wolf Pilot PIREP on this very kneeboard! I bought mine about 4 weeks into my flight training and I have similar issues and concerns about it, but that being said, I like it overall and was going to solicit others opinions on the proper configuration or the configuration that they prefer. I use an ipad mini when I fly as a backup to the G1000. I also use the 7 ring attachment for my own notes / reference material and checklists. We will have to do a collab in a few weeks to compare notes after you have actually had more time using it. Great video by the way! Can I link it when I put up my video?

      How funny! Absolutely on linking.

@@TakingOff LoL! Whatever you do, don't do a PIREP on the COAST headlamp. I already did that. But if you think it's a neat product and want to do one anyway, by all means, clear for takeoff! (just link my vid )

You could flip your pad around and have the loose side under the clasp. That way the clasp protects the loose end when putting it in your flight bag.

      Doesn’t bend that way.

I would have like to have see the iPad holder, but aside from that nice job!

I have tried a number of kneeboards (I haven't tried the Crystal Pilot board) but my favourite by far is the CUSTOM Maverick MKII Kneeboard by MOA Gear.

I also still use a paper pad to take notes while in the system. Looks like a nice product.

Most kneeboards are junk. I did all my airplane training with just a clipboard and switched to a trifold for helicopters. Trying to hold a paper notepad and an electronic tabled just doesn't work.

I feel like not closing and protecting the contents is in face a deal breaker unfortunately. I got excited at the start of the video but that point rules it out unfortunately. Thanks very much for this and all your content!

Good review Dan. I have been looking for another kneeboard. I use a Cessna one as well. Nice shirt when is your merch going to be available?

Interesting that it won't hold a pad when folded.

From the time I started Instrument, I always use a kneeboard (PITA if I have to get out of the plane for a short time, but, hey....)
Mine is DYI --- made from a cheap Office Max Tablet holder, with elastic corners that holds a 5 x7 pad, and has a 2' velcro strap attached with a couple feet of duct tape. Works perfect with total cost less than double digits

My PRIMARY writing surface is a sheet of paper with ATIS and CRAFT categories pre-annotated and laminated with vinyl. Data is written with an overhead pen (wet erase marker), so at end of flight, the contents are erased and made fresh for the next flight.
Total cost is less than double digit dollars.
Has been working well for close to double digit number of years ....
