How do farriers remember all these small details, I forget what I’m going to the kitchen for.

Why are you trying to transfer the weight from the outside to the inside branch? And how does adding more material and a wider web help do that?

Scott Glew Hi Scott, competitions are a great way to test yourself in both skill and speed but also to watch and learn from other people. I would highly recommend them especially during an apprenticeship. 👌

Old farriers know how it's supposed to be. They didn't have to make all these special shoes on non problems hooves back in those days. If the hoof does not grow mostly in height overall the Balance is wrong. Too HIGH toe lead to low bars and LONG TOE. OVAL HOOVES.

Hi Cathrin, interesting point but if you take a look in old text books you will see some rather interesting shoe shapes and designs. Things haven't actually changed much, in fact I think the industry has gone full circle 😂

@@AlexRidgewayFarrier Thanks. But these Round front AND BACK hooves aren't there today. So what has happened?
Watch his technique holding the rear leg to the opposite side. It must be AWSOME on young horses. Also the crack treatment. Don't destroy the durability. My 4 year old Mare got a crack in the middle of the medium side. The farrier was skilled, but took away too much material on BOTH frontlegs medium sides wich is the side this horse Weigh into, so she got Laminatis as well. The farrier wanted "LONG toes to have anything to put the nails into". She could only walk on Grass. After 4 weeks she was severely lame. I put a wedged sole under a broader shoe to keep her from leaning inwards. She is flat-footed as her mother and BIG. She became comfortable at once. 14 days later the farrier came back. The sole had healed and released. I didn't see what the farrier did. But a few days later the mare was super lame. When it took the shoe off I saw that the hoofwall was Lower than the trimmed sole and the nails were put to close to it. I couldn't even take her for a walk in 5 months. Riding was out of question. She also became angry/ frustrated. When the horse was relatively new born I got a farrier from a clinic to treat the soft and BEND fetlocks. She didn't stand on her hoofs at all. He( who I later found out had NO experience or education how to correct foal hooves) cut the toe off. So IF she got on her feet she rolled off again. Well. Do you see my point? There is no good craftsmanship or knowledge to get here. I guess it's why so many takes farriers from overseas right now. Belgium, Holland and Germany. @@cathringustafsson2426 Sounds like you need to either communicate and work closer with your current farrier or simply make a change. There are plenty of great farriers around but I'm not sure exactly where you are. In regards to round feet, I tend not to try and manipulate foot shape, I find I have a lot of round feet. I see side clipped shoes often incorrectly fitted and I agree this leads to narrowing of front feet. I hope you are able to get on top of your current situation.

@@AlexRidgewayFarrier Sorry I edited A lot. 😁 Sure there are good ones, but I have driven 200 km one way and didn't get any help. I'm not kidding know. A week after I was at the Best farrier, the nails were coming out and the answer I got was "-Use Duct tape". On a 800kg 184 CM high horse.

ALL thoroughbreds at racetracks have super healthy nice hooves and then they are sold. Then they all get into trouble. My neighbor. A retired farrier had thoroughbreds his whole life and has been the main farrier of large ridingschools. Since his retirement the horses have gone bad. Big horses are lame most of the time. No hoof no horse. The new farriers blame it on bad riders and the environment. It has become a HUGE problem. No wonder why the Barefoot hysteria has become a success. They blame the Steelshoe. Thinks that a hoof is comparable to a Paw. Today farriers want hooves to be a block which not widens at impact. No cracks and no shoes coming off, but horses getting injured.

That's all you have? Those videos don't tell me anything. The poor pony still lame and he shouldn't be with a corrective and proper shoeing, thank God, he walking on a nice flat soft grass surface, can you imagine he was on a hard rocky environment? You be in big trouble.
