    Used trees are cool. Wish more folks would consider re-homing unwanted trees (if they can feasibly be removed with roots intact).

    I am planting some today and have been going back and forth on the distance apart. They are almost 6' and pretty lush. I don't want to wait years to block my neighbor's windows. It's good to see that 2 1/2 feet apart will still grow up to be beautiful healthy trees. This was my main concern. Thanks for the great video!

    Thank you for making this video..We hired landscaping company to plant ten 5 ft tall Emerald green Arborvitaes n they planted them very tight n one by one they are dying 😢..We are not sure of how to care..We invested a lot(for our budget) on these..But the ones that we planted by ourselves are 1-2ft tall n 3ft apart are doing great..
    Keep making these videos..

    Growing a solid hedge is done often. You are fortunate that yours stayed nice and green. Some browning out happens in my area MI zone 6. These are very common in many yards, so I said "never". That is until I bought & planted the 1st one, then another, and so on. But a used plant is even better yet if a guy can get them! If I ever got the chance for some used I would find some space for a few more..

    just now planting 2.5ft trees that i grew from saplings in pot maybe 3/4" wide stems. putting 4ft apart. good luck future hedge, idk if i will be here to see them be dense and maybe someone will change it. its for the front yard but its a corner house side by stop sign. also want them for neighbor side too to feel cozy. they are good for blocking view of a/c heating unit too which i used and side yard. 6ft would be good enough for me.

    Very nice job and well explained - all looking good. I'm going to plant the same type of hedge very soon. Here in the UK I am advised that I can leave the hessian wrap (cloth ) and the wire mesh on the root balls when I plant them as they are both de-composable. I am now worried that I should remove them as I think you mentioned. If anyone knows the answer please let me know - I would be very grateful - thanks.

    • @NoNonsenseKnowHow
      @NoNonsenseKnowHow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. Yeah they work really well as a privacy fence. And I got the "used" trees on Marketplace from somebody giving them away. Not really worth it though since it's a ton of work getting them out of the ground without killing them in a little bit risky because there's good chance they will die. Best to do it in the fall just before winter. Outside showers are the best! I totally agree. There's just something magical about it

    Will 4 feet between my fence and concrete be enough to plant this tree for privacy or should I get something smaller, I just need about 8 feet tall plant or tree or something...my house is on a corner lot and the side of the house facing street is where I would like to add a privacy screen so people won't see the inside of my yard. My yard sits high so everybody that drives by or walks by can see me. I thought about lattice too but I like the idea of a natural privacy barrier better..like I mentioned before I have about 4 feet of dirt between fence and concrete slab.. I will be needing something too to block my neighbor since he has a 2 house story facing my back yard.

    The mature size of these is 3-10 feet in diameter. You will have better coverage if you would cut out every other tree and allow them to grow to fill the gaps. If you do not, you will have the dead bare branches like those that you show on the corner tree.

    Do you have a problem with bag worms on your trees? I'm looking for a hedge type tree and am thinking about this type to keep my VERY nosy neighbors prying eyes out of my backyard. I'll have about 50 or 60 linear feet that needs to be covered. In Northwestern Missouri here. Glad I found your channel!

    • @NoNonsenseKnowHow
      @NoNonsenseKnowHow  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I haven't had a problem with the bagworms. I remember one of my neighbors always had those on his arborvitaes though when I was a kid

    • @williamsawyer2223
      @williamsawyer2223 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never heard of Bagworms until they killed 3 of mine pretty quick it seemed.
      I basically picked them all off and threw them in the fire pit. You will have to keep an eye out for the ones you missed and go over the tree several times and through the summer. They hang on branch with a silky thread and will suffocate the branches so you should try to remove the threading. I used a small/fine pair of electrician diagnols FWIW.
      Not sure if there is a holistic remedy but having 2 kids doesn't lend itself to sit down and research it thoroughly.
      Haven't figured out how to prevent them yet as I was gonna transfer one today but just found out it should be done in the fall. Dunno if it can be done in March and hoping someone has an answer to do so.
      This nonGreen Thumb could use any and all advice please.

I have another variety in my landscaping that came with the home that are much taller, and much wider. They're on the replace list with Emerald Greens, and I'll place 'em about 4' to 4'6" apart.

Unfortunately I have some very intuitive seniors behind me that love peering over the fence to complain about something. Long story short. My trees are about 8ft tall now. I’m just hoping they shoot up soon but I got quite a gap in two of them. Was this a problem you encountered before they filled in all the way? I can send you a photo if that helps. Thanks Shweta! And I'm not sure about zone 9. A good indicator would be if there are local nurseries that sell them in your area. If so then yeah you're probably good. If home Depot and nurseries don't stock them near you then probably no go

    Is it possible to trim them to act as a hedge? It looks like there may be issues with how much green you keep on it if you trimmed.

    I had them in Michigan loved them! Do you think they would survive in south Texas?

      I'm not 100% sure to be honest. I would think as long as you have irrigation for them in case of a drought you should be fine

      Lots of people sell emerald green arborvitaes around my area. I suppose a good indicator would be if nobody sells them down there. Like even home Depot has them here

    They look very nice. Are they dry in between like in your other video? Or has it stopped?

    I live in Massachusetts is it best to plant Arborvitae’s in the fall like now or in the spring

    Do you need to worry about how close they're planted next to a cedar fence? Will they start to push the fence?
    Any idea how deep and wide the root structure is? I have some half wine barrels that are 16" deep and 24" wide. With adequate drainage, would these be too small?

    Question: I’m looking to plant some American Pillar Arborvitaes next to my pool for privacy. I’m in zone 8. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find information about roots and confirm if these are invasive. Any insights you might have? Thank you for the video.

      I have the same question Susan. I'm in zone 8 as well and am thinking of planting these as a screen around a future pool build to block some ridiculous neighbors.

      I would try to keep a good distance from you're pool foundation. Degroot spite arborvortae, can grow for probably 50 to 80 years maybe more . Those are massive roots at that point. Emerald arborvitae live about 25 years optimal life span.

      @@justinforman5854 all my trees died from the summer drought... Trying to find a replacement for privacy. Probably a tall hedge with small roots. Certainly, American Pillars are not the best option for North Texas (Zone 8). 😞

    The fence looks great but kinda scary place for people to hide

      There's always places for people to hide though. But true. Nice landscaping is generally going to offer plenty of hiding places.
