    Interesting tidbit of history there! I never knew about that aircraft. Thanks!

    The plane was not called the "Demon". The mistake in the name was due to a post-war historian looking through the Curtiss files and finding a reference next to the prototype calling it "demon". It turns out this was an abbreviation of "demonstrator". There are no wartime references to the CW-21B ever being called "Demon".

    The Japanese used this music to torture allied POWs during the war.

    The Curtis Demon fighter was underpowered and undergunned. It might have been a good fighter in the middle 1930's. However, during a time of rapidly changing technologies in aircraft designs/engines it just wasn't where it should have been to fight a Mitsubishi Zero. The elevator music is so pleasant and wonderful it could drive some drive some listeners literally insane. Maybe we could sentence prisoners to have to listen to it all day long.

    sounds like elevator music with an asian buffet on ground floor and a clown workshop on second floor or something from a bad foreign nickelodeon cartoon in the 80's where a dragon befriends children he will later eat.

    Curtis Demon is listed in wiki with 314 MPH top speed and 282 MPH as the cruise speed
    other sources agree
    which makes it entirely compatible with the Zero excepting a startling climb speed exceeding the Zero by 1400 fpm

    I remember seeing a British prototype aircraft built in roughly in 1936 -1937.
    It looked exactly like a ZERO.
    I wonder if it was just luck they looked the same!

    I, an my friend who later would be in the international film industry, were once in an elevator with Ravi Shankar, Bangkok, Thailand, circa 1971, after we saw him in concert. That music reminded me of that, what he must have endured after my friend and I got on before him and in our immature prankish mentality, pushed every button do the elevator would have to stop at every floor of the new 25+/- hotel. Lol! Meanwhile, was it fighter aircraft, pilot experience or both that won the day? One looked like a child's you going up against a war machine.

    There appear to be some whiny children bitching about the music in this video. Perhaps someone, such as their mothers, should educate them about the basics of interpersonal behavior. Anyway, that's a neat little airplane that I'd never heard anything about. Interesting that it was so slow compared to the Zero, yet had a huge advantage in rate of climb. That ought to make for an interesting dogfight matchup. To design, develop, and produce a fighter but sell it in such miniscule numbers surely could not have been Curtiss's intent. I suppose they hoped to sell the planes to the US military, but it was rejected.

  • @andrewtongue7084
    @andrewtongue7084 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The documentary itself was interesting enough, but the music just didn't fit the programme - fundamentally, the Zero's were a superior fighting machine in this particular instance.

    A negative kill ratio is not a good thing. That the Zeros had the Demons for lunch is no surprise news. Better and more powerful fighters came to grief against them until the Hellcats and Corsairs had the Zeros for their lunch. Oh, and a few P-38s in the right hands did very well, too.
    A great fighter in 1940-42 will not necessarily be so great in later years without major improvement, which the Zero never got.

    The "Demon" was desperately slow

    • @lairdcummings9092
      @lairdcummings9092 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Demon was comparable to its design contemporaries. It fell victim to the rapid pace of technological development - a design could literally become obsolete as soon as it was placed in service. Or even before. The Dutch didn't have a large aeroplane industry, so had to use whatever they could find, buy, or scrounge.

      As Mr Cummings points out, it wasnt that slow compared to its contemporaries, but it was 50 mph slower than a zero. Having said that a zero going near max chat was a sod to fly in anything other than straight and level due to huge working surface areas that were man-power operated. Zero was at its best in slow speed dogfights and outflew Spitfire V's. That was a bit of a shock to many.

    Please send an album of this music to Nancy Pelosi. It could definitely be used to wreak havoc whereas the Curtis Demon wreaked nothing. It was about as useful as a Cessna 172 and a Colt Peacemaker. If this music were played on FM in the early morning hours an entire city could become alcoholic.

    Allied fighters of those days can't beat Japanese fighters at all. Anyway, exaggerate it and inflate the number of shots down. When he occupied Java, he captured the Curtis fighter and tested it in Japan, but he said he had nothing to reference.
