Marty I just wanna post comment and say a big thanks, I started to play guitar about a year ago, and back then I didn't know how to hold a guitar. But thanks to you I learned chords, chord progression, strumming patterns, and I'm doing pretty fine now.... Not only you're a great guitar player but you're also an awesome teacher.... Guys like you are rare cause not anyone can teach like you do..... Dude you rock! :)
Dude I haven't played guitar in years and I never was that good to begin with. I just picked one up again and realized all my callouses are gone and I forgot any songs I once knew. Your videos are an awesome way to get back into playing, and all the chords are starting to appear under my fingers again as I learn these songs watching your videos. You are a much better teacher than I ever had in high school, or than any of my rockin' friends ever were for me. Thanks for putting these up!
Marty, You are the BEST! I'm learning this song for my pops He was married to my mom for 43 years. She passed in 2004. They got together when she was 12 he was 15. They both played guitar. I learned to play when I was 15. My oldest sister taught me I played only for a few years until I put the guitar down and didn't pick it up again for 25 years! So I'm relearning. You have helped me tremendous over the past couple years! I'm in Arizona now originally from Pennsylvania. I want to perfect this song for my pops when I go back in September.A great big thank you for all the help!
Marty deserves credit for teaching so many people how to strum necessary basic chords. I mean, there are probably thousands of people who learned a little guitar with this man. I think he's fuckng great.
btw marty, just want to say thanx for bringing the line 6 amp to my attention in your videos, i went and bought one today and they are amazing, thanx for making me aware of them, ur the best, lewis from scotland
Hello Marty, You're great, man. I purchased a guitar years ago, but have never made a diligent effort to learn to play the songs that I would like to learn. If you could help me learn the following songs I would greatly appreciate it!: 'That's All Right Mama' (Elvis); The Dance (Garth Brooks); 'That's When Your Heartaches Begin' (Elvis); 'Are You Lonesome Tonight' (Elvis). Thank you, Marty!
great lesson. How about some roy orbison songs, especially after i watched Back and White night there were so many great solo/riffs played by james burton.
@AOTSismyhero depends on what snares u have. its also a challenge for some ppl to make pressure on the WHOLE bar, if u dnt have the pressure needed, then it will sound horrible.. plus u have to concentrate on the other fingers. A LOT of ppl struggle with tht chord. i did xD
I wish someone had told me that trick for playing G with my ring finger sooner. It's so common with older songs and I've often found myself notice a chord change without seeing the fret hand move
Thanks for this video. It's very helpful but have a question about the bar chord. Is the bar finger only actually touching two stings so the other three fingers are allowed to ring out properly when you string all six stings?
Bar strings are named as such because you create a bar with your finger and it hits every string along the line except for the strings below it (below meaning above since were talking guitar). The reason you use a bar chord is because of the lack of additional fingers. Any string pressed will either have a more prominent fret pushed or it will be meant to be fret on that particular note. don't worry about muting strings with your left hand on a bar chord.
Pick a song you know WITHIN!!!!,,THEN ONCE YOU OPEN ONE,THEY ALL OPEN AND YOU'LL BE A MARTY FOLLOWING MONSTER ADDING NEW MATERIAL..BYE THE WAY,THANKS MARTY..
I've been playing for years and I suck, but that's because I haven't practiced 20 min a day like I should. I just got into being able to sing while I play. I suggest Rocksmith if you have a council or strong PC. You cant help but sing when playing rocksmith because the songs replay parts over and over so it grates on you and before you know it you find yourself singing while you figure out your next chord.
Marty we need some Aerosmith going on. Been listening to them all my life. Your lessons are always amazing. How about Kings and Queens or Livinè on The Edge.

@ConorHarrington I agree about Martin guitars being overrated but you can't deny that it is a sexy guitar :P
to simplify it a little bit to start with marty could you use the 4 finger G and the C add 9 ?
Which pick do you use ? 50 mm ?
what guitar is that? it looks liek the one i was just looking at whic is the yamaha FG700S?

Marty we need some Aerosmith going on. Been listening to them all my life. Your lessons are always amazing. How about Kings and Queens or Livinè on The Edge.
Free guitar lessons that's fuckin rock n roll!!
Do you have vinyl strings on that guitar? I sware they look like vinyl......
I am really frustrated with the strumming pattern as I can't get the timing down
Don't focus too much and let it come naturally. It's like taking a poop.
