One thing I noticed off the bat, because I do the exact same thing: You tend to lift your head off the shot on your downswing, like you're anticipating where the ball will go before you make contact. I've had to drill keeping my head down on the shot really hard, because I was constantly topping the ball due to moving my head too soon. Every time you stayed down on the shot, you made good contact.
@@fromduffertodriver You'll get there! I'm improving. My coach told me that this is probably the most common issue he sees with new golfers. We just want to see the ball fly!
It certainly will. I used to play to probably somewhere around a 25 handicap. Found a coach and took some lessons, worked my ass off every day in between. I now play to a 4. If I can do it so can anybody else.
22 handicap here, and I appreciate you sharing your journey with us. I'm only just now starting to break 100 consistently, and it's nice to see other golfers meeting the same challenges I have.
Can I give a tip with the bunkers? it really looks like you are trying to "scoop" the ball out which is why you had 3 identical shots. Trust your club, swing hard and hit just before the ball. The club will do the work!
I feel like I need to spend time practicing in bunkers. I've skyed the ball over the green a bunch of times as well, which is always in the back of my mind when attempting bunker shots. Makes me scared to commit and swing hard!
Completely understand. I highly recommend getting practice in bunkers then! After I did that, I've be so confident ever since! You'll learn the shot and never look back. Great vid & keep it up!@@fromduffertodriver
As a high HCer myself we have the same problem with constant ball contact. These are the tips that improves my game the most. At the range practice… Slow down your backswing. Get comfortable with 50% swings.( shorten your backswing) Most importantly don’t wipe the club at the top of your swing.. let it drop get to about 9clock and POWER THROUGH THE BALL! Hands down this DRASTICALLY changed my game for the better.
I'm not much better than you but I ended last year topping lots of shots and hitting super low hooks. What I saw in myself that I'm seeing in you is in your takeaway, you're bringing the club inside. Try imagining that clubhead staying outside your hands at the beginning of the takeaway. So when the club is parallel to the ground, the clubhead should be outside your target line. It's hard to explain but you can find a million videos online describing it better than I can. See if that helps.
Love the sprit man and if you want a few swing tips got a couple. As someone who routinely shoots 80s golf, the few things I notice right off the bat and will change your ball striking immediately is one, make sure your lead arm is straight and also keep that elbow parallel to your body. we don't want the chicken wing. two, making sure your body and weight are coming through the golf ball and staying on top of the shot. this will help with consistent contact and not getting off balance and behind the golf ball which leads to inconsistent strikes. Three and this is hard to type but def watch videos on learning how to compress the golf ball correctly. This will give you more distance and cleaner ball striking. Also, watch phil mickleson on bunker lessons. Keep up the good work brother!
As a higher handicapper (16-18), I feel your pain. However, just doing a little research on the course.....You're playing from the White Tees at 6400 yards... Your not doing yourself any favors by playing that yardage.... I stay in the 5700-6000 range when I play.... I wont move up until I break 80 consistently. Leaves to much more stress free golf...
Very Fair point! When I started, I was going off the green Tees. But then as I got more confident, I moved back to the white tees. To be fair I moved to the whites too early, mostly out of peer pressure from other players. I'm used to the whites now so that's where I'm playing lol
Man I am there right now. It feels like I sabotage every hole with at least one duff or shank or topped ball. It's so frustrating and it's demoralizing to not be improving, especially when I've been playing so much golf in the last six months.
It's what makes golf so infuriating! And then you git a great shot and it makes us want to keep going! Remember that golf is not about perfection, but about good misses. We just have to work on getting better shanks 😅
EVERYONE makes a bad shot or a number of them in a round its the good shots that keep us hopeful and coming back I LOVE the game I am a 7 handicap at age 59 and my goal is still to be a scratch golfer one day just enjoy the game keep the negative thoughts to a minimum and you will get better and one day you'll be breaking 90 then 80 patience great video and keep on golfing cheers from Canada
Was enjoyable to watch and you are playing solid when not topping the ball. I had real issues myself with that and as someone mentioned it is the looking where the ball is going before you hit it that is the key here. You turn your head towards the path before you strike making you raise your body and not getting compression or a clean hit. The gap you create when rising up and forward before the strike seems to be it here. I was struggling with that as well and it could sometimes be caused by stress of not playing fast enough, ppl behind you catching up and such. I bet you don't top any shots like that on the range. Just don't make it a habit and keep those eyes on the ball at all times. You are playing really good for a 27hcp and with that out of the way you are on a straight path to 15-20hcp! Keep up the grinding!
Thanks a lot for the feedback! Was having an off day, but what you're saying makes complete sense, and would explain why I was topping so much. Can't wait for the season to start again so I can chip away at that handicap!
Nice work Joey!! Tough day out but you kept grinding... what it's all about 💪 You definitely got some good shots in the bag, swing looking better... the low point control will come with time. As they say in life and in golf... just keep your head down 😉
Think you have potential. Watched the topped shots several times over. Looks like you are looking to see where it went almost before you hit it. Your best strikes came when you stayed down on the shot. Perhaps a bit too ambitious out of the rough as well but then you knew that, I'm sure. Good clubhead speed but your inconsistent low point in your swing let you down. Good watch. 👍
Idk what my handicap is, (max is 36 so probably that). But I shot a 109 today. The only that kept my clubs in tact and out of the water was their price tag.
Do you not Tee up on the Tee box? My instructor taught me all the free things like teeing up on the tee box, using the line on the ball for putts, which side of tee box to use depending on the hole...
If its any consolation, I can shoot 4 over on a par 3 without any penalties or go out of bounds. And I've been playing for over 30 years. You're a beginner and need to put in the time and pay your dues. I've paid my dues but triples and quadrupels are seriously a part of the game. They can spring up anywhere at anytime although because you're a beginner it happens more often than not. If I were to give advice . . . . become a greatly insane putter. Make the putter be the best club in your bag. I've played with duffers who'll get on a par 4 in 3 and 1 putt for par. You did it in this video. That's where you want to win is on the green. Your game becomes more focused and improved because you would know that all you have to do is get the ball on the green as quickly as you can and play right into your strength. Learn how to read the greens and pay attention to the pace of the ball. Read your entire foursomes putts to improve and watch yourself get better on the tee and in the fairway. Start from the flag and work your way to the tee.
Nice video, nice 18th tee shot keeps you coming back doesnt it? Very seldom do you generally play sport off the back foot, think tennis, baseball or football, soccer, all sport is played with weight going forward. Golf is no different, think about the club at the bottom of the arc when you top or thin a shot the club face is travelling up, so it could be poor ball position, but looking at you seems more likely your weight is not transfering forwards. You see more pronounced when you chip by the side of the green. Pushing your weight forwards gives you a downwards motion, to hit the ball first then the ground. At set up start with 60% weight through the left foot, maintain it through the swing see how you go.
Let to the party for giving advice on this video, but watching your frustration build just made me feel bad. I see a couple of easy things that you can work on to stop topping the ball and maybe this will help your all around ball striking. First thing is your balance in your backswing. You look like your swing coach has really helped with your takeaway and your club looks fairly square at the top. And although I haven't seen a side on view of your swing, I see the straightening of the back leg in the backswing. This causes the dreaded reverse pivot, weight has stayed on your lead foot. This position with your body is causing you to cast your club on the way down. I slowed your swing down, and repeatedly your body was chasing the hands at impact. If you check your topped shots, you'll notice that the club face is extremely closed at impact. The lifting issue is really just your body knowing that it has to correct something as without moving up, you would have hit 6 inches behind the ball. Good cure for this is to feel your weight while you are loading moving to the inside of the right big toe/ball of foot. Never to the outside, and absolutely never stay on your left side. In order to start the downswing properly, you need to have the sensation of stomping a bug with your left foot. Starting the left leg/hips before the club will get you to a more natural position to strike the ball. Second thing I saw was how active you are with your hands. If you do decide to take a lesson or two, I would ask for a short game lesson. You've developed your little scoop move for chipping. Body squats, and the wrists throw the club through the ball. You've noticed that your miss with wedges tends to be left I'm sure. If you get a coach that can help with maintaining your wrist angles with chips, and learning to hit them with your rotation, you will find that hitting the ball out of the middle will become second nature. You can apply this to longer and longer clubs, as the release of the club is the same, even if the swing arc is longer or wider. Anyways, just trying to help. I know what a frustrating game this can be, and I hate seeing people struggle. The guy below who was telling you to check the ego, is really just saying that all of us are guilty of thinking that we have all the shots in our bag. Getting in trouble off the tee in play is priority 1. Even if you top it. Playing three of the tee and topping that sure feels a lot worse. Good luck sir, subscribed so I can see your progress.
This is excellent advice, thank you! Will keep the "stomping a bug" thought I my head the next time I'm at the range. I was having a particularly bad day this round, here's hoping the next one I can bounce back!
