Listening to Dave explain American football is priceless and endearing (coming from an American who played football growing up and watches it religiously). To follow up on your point, I got interested in soccer (or, the other football) during the '06 World Cup and learned the rules of the sport from FIFA 2007. Both footballs have "offsides", but they are very different in the definitions. Limited substitutions, what constitutes a yellow or red card, the clock counting up instead of down, relegation, etc. Shout out to games and sports and sports games.
It’s okay Elle. I believe the vast majority of KH players are in the same boat. Great series. Just plot holes so big you don’t know what’s the sky anymore.
Dave, I would be happy to explain American Football to you. Core concept is simple, but the details seem to require knowledge of American Football's own language to understand. The basics: Each team tries to get the football to the opposite end of the field, known as the "endzone". Each attempt by the offense to move the football is called a "play". The offense has 4 chances, or "downs", to move the football a total of 10 yards. If they achieve this goal, they get another set of downs to attempt to move the ball further toward the endzone. The opposing team is then on defense, attempting to prevent the offense from moving the ball forward. If the offense exhausts their downs without gaining a total of 10 yards, the other team gets possession of the ball. Often times if the offense does not gain the required 10 yards on 3rd down, they will use 4th down to kick the ball downfield to the opposing team, known as a "punt". The other team gets possession of the ball this way, but now they have a greater distance to cover before they can score. A play is over when the ball carrier is tackled to the ground, or if the ball is thrown forward but is not caught. If a team member possesses the football in the endzone (either by catching it or running it in) it is a "touchdown" worth 6 points. A "touchdown" is the American equivalent of a "goal" in world football. After scoring a touchdown, you can either kick the ball through the upright posts for one extra point, or you can run an additional play to get the ball into the endzone again for 2 extra points. Another common way to score points is a "field goal". If an offense faces 4th down but they're close to the endzone, they can attempt kick the ball through the goal posts. If it goes through, it is a "field goal" worth 3 points. The game lasts 4 quarters. In college and professional football each quarter is 15 minutes, in high school football (at least here in Texas), each quarter is 12 minutes. There are all sorts of rules about when the clock actually runs, when it stops, etc. But that's its own rabbit hole. There are entire philosophies of play-calling on both offense and defense, various offensive formations and defensive schemes, rules on how the game clock is managed, how penalties work, additional but more obscure ways to score points, and an entire history of how the game has evolved over the decades. Not to mention learning all of the offensive and defensive positions and their general roles and responsibilities. Many of these things are not necessary to understand to enjoy the game itself, but in my opinion they do make it more interesting.

Here are two old school ones that I never got to fully understand: Digimon world (ps1) the tamagotchi-like rpg, the mechanics were very convoluted but the world was charming and the dotHack games (ps2) where all the items, abilities, weapons, places, characters and events had weird and unfamiliar names yet it was an enjoyable jrpg.
Listen man, don't feel bad about not understanding Football. I played Freshman year, still don't know what I'm supposed to be doing. Just run the ball to your end zone pretty much.
as an American, I really enjoyed and appreciated Dave's story about playing madden...I recently tried a cricket game and had no clue what was going on the entire time.
As an American I didnt understand Futbol for the longest time. I would attempt to play Fifa and get offsides all the time and lose it because it made no sense to me. I decided one year during the world cup to sit down and really learn the fundamentals of the game. I now love watching Futbol and find myself getting super involved during a match.
You should give Elite Dangerous another try after the September update drops, Rob. Frontier are introducing a lot of new tutorials and in-game guides with the September update which should make it much easier to get into.
I feel you dave, im American and still dont understand football, tried to get into it and learn it, apparently a little too late cause as soon as i was like lets get back to the actual game going on, family was like "you dont like football whats going on" and decided well guess im not gonna bother learning
I have to say Kingdom Hearts as well, i love the characters, dialog and gameplay of the series but with the story i have no idea what is going on but i still find the games extremely enjoyable
Playstation should have an avatar where you can customize them like gears and weapons or sports gear by getting those parts in game achievements. You beat a game or do special mission in any game for example god of war. You go back to your avatar and equip a God of war axe or gauntlet. With this, the value if a game will remain high plus replay value
Hey Rob, Elite Dangerous is getting updated right now to make it a lot more accessible for new pilots, where the speed is more under control and you can auto-launch and auto-dock in starter systems. Give it a go. I have been to the other end of the galaxy and back in it and love it, but waiting on the massive update coming next year.
Alright, Elle. Here’s the order: KH, Chain of Memories, KH2, 358/2 Days, Birth By Sleep, Re: Coded, Dream Drop Distance, Union χ (for near the end of KH3 and knowledge of the Foretellers and the first Keyblade War), KH3.
I don't know if you will see this Rob, but if you want to play a simpler open world space game No Man's Sky got good recently. It's a day before the next update as I type, but could be fun to travel it in VR since I imagine you have at least one PSVR set in the office.
Anno. I love the series. Played every game. Have no clue how to play it 'properly'. I fail at every scenario/challenge. I just choose free play on easiest difficulty with no challenges and make bread for my people and expand a little.
My game I enjoyed but didn’t understand is Bloodborne. I’ve only recently finished the game but I don’t understand anything. I don’t read into lore of games, I just learn what they teach me as I play and all I know is I was a hunter and something was very wrong with everyone else.
Read the description of everything you find. Or succumb to some lore videos. There are some amazing ones out there. And it really adds to the game when you begin to understand what is happening. It's very Lovecraftian.
To be fair to Elle, it's clear from all the games after 2 that even the developers didn't understand the Kingdom Hearts series. Speaking of, Elle, if you see this comment, you should check out the "So this is basically Kingdom Hearts" video by JelloApocalypse. It will make you feel so much better for what you don't get.
I will say that it was rob on a friday feature, talking about Elite Dangerous, that actually got me to go and play it for myself. specifically how he would talk about how hard it was to dock to a station... and boy did it not disappoint. Fun hour ( conservatively) trying to figure out how to get out of supercruise and I refused look up a guide or restart the tutorial... Now I'm trying buy all the ships!
Kingdom Hearts’ story can be kind of confusing and daunting, but after experiencing all of it, and everything clicks together, you’re just like “Ohhhhhh!”
I am an American, Dave, who grew up in a very spotty household and somehow wound up the nerd. So I have absolutely no idea how "American football" works, regardless of the fact that my family watches every game possible. My brother patiently explains everything and I still have no idea what the heck it means to blitz. I didn't even know you weren't supposed to throw the ball in a blitz until today. 😂😂
My mind comprehends what to do in fighting games, but my hands don't. I find it very difficult to train muscle memory in almost anything, especially small finger motions like moving joysticks and pressing specific buttons in specific orders with very specific timing.
Warframe I think for me was the hardest to understand. So many things and I just get confused. Loved the game but that was the reason I stopped playing it.
I still understood KH1, I also kind of understood KH2. Everything after and in between that I was just like "Yeah, I don't understand you at all... But you look nice and I like you so I play anyways."
I'll say I understand the story *better* now. But the first time I played thru Final Fantasy VIII. I had basically no clue what or why I was doing most things.
How did I miss this upload? Also, I've been intrigued by Madden a few times, played the demo and then gone "Nah." I'll stick to NHL. Also, got to agree with Elite Dangerous. The learning curve is near vertical, but once you get even half way good, you're laughing. Helps that I played it on pc before PS4 though. Saying that, my first attempt to play it had me rage quit while trying to land at a space station, uninstall the game and not play it for about two months...
@Dave oh that made me laugh :) I was looking for a tutorial on American Football.... Yea Dave not so much in Madden :P @Rosie parappa is pure nostalgia for me :), that was a fun mention for me to see and hear. @Elle your not alone 90% of the fan base whom love Kingdom Hearts have no idea what is going on anymore in that crazy inane plot. Then came Rob whom of course most of us were waiting on..... and i see and hear him say Elite Dangerous :) and the thoughts of him in that ultra space sim just endlessly made the wife and i smile :). Great Tues Show Gang, much thank you to ea one of you :). @PlayStation Access
I love the look and smile Rosie gives when she is talking about the rap song about buns. Like, she knows exactly what it implies and the comments she is going to get but she will maintain that it is about hamburgers.
Mine would be Rob's pick too. On Playstation, (EVE Online would be the other platforms) - Elite Dangerous. I too was drawn in by the promise of discovering magnificent ancient relics and delving into the depths of the universe at the helm of my own Millennium Falcon... Only to crash into the shuttlebay doors on my way out and when I did master that, I became a space bus driver... -_-
You're all just fantastic, as always. And Dave, well done: you played and enjoyed a video game of a sport that, to me, is nearly inscrutable. (Yes, I'm from the U.S.)
If I didn't have to work I'd drive down and give Dave my copy of Madden 20 just so he can play it. I love the game so much a found a local team 3 years ago and started playing American football... Madden hurts less though...
Elite: Dangerous does not have a learning curve, it has a learning wall they've also added an auto-launch module to make getting out of stations easier. :P
Honestly Rob I think you stopped playing Elite Dangerous at the perfect time. It seems like a game with so much potential but when you get 10s or 100s of hours into it you start to see how thin the veneer really is. There is a reason many describe it as "a mile wide, an inch deep". Stopping right after the tutorial it must seem like a much deeper more interesting game than it does after 100 hours and realizing all you have been doing is moving numbers around.

Assassin's creed unity dropping in from AC2 no idea what was going on and bugs. Lot's of bugs.
Yeah I've said similar above. I've put about 1000 hours into it myself though taking a break waiting on the big update next year.
Yeah I've heard about that game. I've also heard that they made the game so complicated on purpose because it's extremely shallow
Here’s the order: KH, Chain of Memories, KH2, 358/2 Days, Birth By Sleep, Re: Coded, Dream Drop Distance, Union χ (for near the end of KH3 and knowledge of the Foretellers and the first Keyblade War), KH3.
now we need a stream where Rosie plays Parapa blindfolded
Christ Rex Grossman at qb for the bears? Must have been some real dust on that archive footage! (Yes I'm a madden /NFL fan!)
Toasty Buns is the same type of humor level as Foxy Boxes. *cues Marik Plays Bloodlines*
The moment Rob took his mic off made me like and suscribe.
Still don’t know what’s going on in the Gwent Stand-alone despite having 350+ hrs in Gwent in The Witcher 3
The jump from "xehanort is a bad guy" to "xehanort is like, 13 bad guys" is not one that I, a small brain child, was not prepared for
I knew before clicking this video that Kingdom Hearts was gonna be mentioned, thought Rob was gonna be the one to mention it though
i love all of you guys and i like that gjallarhorn at the back
To be fair to Elle, it's clear from all the games after 2 that even the developers didn't understand the Kingdom Hearts series.
Speaking of, Elle, if you see this comment, you should check out the "So this is basically Kingdom Hearts" video by JelloApocalypse. It will make you feel so much better for what you don't get.
Rob’s reaction killed me.
Totally know what you mean. It's just madden-ing.
You guys are the best. Really helped me through this hot southern US summer. 117 heat index today
Resonance of Fate. Fight mechanics are so complex, I just can't comprehend how to do it. Yet I love pretty much everything else.
Anybody else realize that Elle popped up and became your second favorite?
Behind Rob ofc
The entire Metal gear solid franchise
I live on Long Island and I can even hear Rob from London screaming his head off from this comment.
Them's fightin' words
Warframe I think for me was the hardest to understand. So many things and I just get confused. Loved the game but that was the reason I stopped playing it.
I still understood KH1, I also kind of understood KH2. Everything after and in between that I was just like "Yeah, I don't understand you at all... But you look nice and I like you so I play anyways."
I'll say I understand the story *better* now. But the first time I played thru Final Fantasy VIII. I had basically no clue what or why I was doing most things.
I've heard it said that the plot of VIII isn't bad, just that the main characters aren't part of it. :P

That voice could be a new character in a Friday feature. 🤣🤣 sounds rather smug 😛😛😛
I love the look and smile Rosie gives when she is talking about the rap song about buns. Like, she knows exactly what it implies and the comments she is going to get but she will maintain that it is about hamburgers.
i thought i was soo dumb at games but i meet Dave, just adore this guy love for video games.
Oh my gosh I laughed so hard through all of this! This might be one of my favorite Tuesday checklists. Ellie's was so funny!
You're all just fantastic, as always. And Dave, well done: you played and enjoyed a video game of a sport that, to me, is nearly inscrutable. (Yes, I'm from the U.S.)
Same boat, Rob (except I haven't even started yet)
If I didn't have to work I'd drive down and give Dave my copy of Madden 20 just so he can play it. I love the game so much a found a local team 3 years ago and started playing American football... Madden hurts less though...
Elite: Dangerous does not have a learning curve, it has a learning wall
they've also added an auto-launch module to make getting out of stations easier.
