    What a brilliant little review, especially when you are unsure if you are wondering onto private property or where the footpath goes across a newly ploughed field... happens to me so often! So many footpaths aren't marked or are so vague, this App helps to eliminate that. Thank you

    Arlo, you mentioned palm trees 🌴!
    I moved from the UK to the Algarve a couple of years ago. One of things I miss is hiking !
    ( Portugal walks are sadly blighted by barking dogs and blistering sunshine )
    The UK’s green and pleasant land is unbeatable!
    PS we love all Sonos products .. I spy a “move” in the background, a super product !

    Fly through is only available on the O.S. website, NOT the O.S. Maps app. 😢

    Arlo, We love the hat and the self deprecating humour.
    Thanks for posting this. ( I’m not sure I’d have discovered the fly-through feature if you hadn’t shown me !) 👍

    May I kindly ask ?
    Is the fly through feature only available on a desktop? I was searching for it on an iPad 12.9” running iOS but couldn’t locate it.

      Sorry, missed this Qu months ago, but I too cannot find it on the app, so think it is only desktop. And actually, it's broken on the desktop this morning!

    Thank you Arlo, I've just started using the OS app and paid for premium. I was getting so frustrated with routes not available and how to actually plot a route instead of downloading a GPX file.

    I am thinking about getting this but was wondering .. what happens when the phone doesn't receive a signal. There are places in the middle of my town where there's no signal, so I am sure on the fells of the Lake District or The Cheviots, the loss of signal is almost certain
    Will this app then stop showing your exact position?
    Thanks

    • @arlo.guthrie
      @arlo.guthrie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, it uses two types of signal: the mobile phone (or wifi) signal to download the map of the area you are in, and the GPS signal to display your position on it. GPS signal is rarely lost. You can get around the loss of mobile signal by downloading the map of the area you will be in before you go out walking in the Cheviots.

      Shortly OS maps will be releasing their next version which will include worldwide. I believe they are starting with Australia first.
      If you watch the OS maps latest video, he explains it towards the end of the video.

    Plotting routes would be vastly improved with a snap-to-path function. Some paths are almost devoid of straight lines and it takes almost as long to plot as walk the route.

    • @arlo.guthrie
      @arlo.guthrie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess you have a point, but it depends on how closely you're trying to get the app to follow a path. I find it works just doing it approximately. In other words, if the path goes 10 degrees right then left quite quickly, I won't bother plotting it - just put a line down the centre. That way, I plot the route in seconds.

    • @greytop7835
      @greytop7835 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It has the Snap-to-path function but only in national parks.

    Can the map view be rotated to your GPS heading rather than North? OS seem incapable of answering

    • @arlo.guthrie
      @arlo.guthrie  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In map view, the map doesn't rotate as you turn, the marker does. So the answer is that you can rotate the map in whichever direction you want (including GPS heading, which is the direction of the marker), and it will remain orientated that way. There is a button to make it rotate the map to North, but not one to rotate to GPS heading. You'd have to do that with your fingers!

    • @greytop7835
      @greytop7835 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I can't seem to do that either, OS maps are not good at doing the simple things.

    Hi,
    I'm wanting to go out by myself with my camera and watched your video... Very impressed.... With the OS maps.
    My husband is very good with paper maps however I don't know one end of a map from the other 😅
    Was wondering , where exactly did you download the map from on your computer?
    Do you pay £23.99 for the computer versions so you can map it all & then download to mobile.
    Hope all that made sense 😅

    • @arlo.guthrie
      @arlo.guthrie  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it makes sense! The subscription is for OS maps on all devices. When connected to the Internet, the whole of the UK is just 'there' and you zoom in to see whatever you want. However, you can save your routes and on the mobile app, you then have the option to download the associated map for viewing offline, or when the connection is painfully slow. On the app, you can also just select an area and download a map too. Hope that helps!

    • @arlo.guthrie
      @arlo.guthrie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, You need a GPS signal for location, but it is pretty rare not to have GPS, unless you’re in Cheddar Gorge. You need a telephone signal to download maps, but you can do that beforehand using WiFi and save.

      My offline downloaded maps on my phone will not work if I don't have a mobile phone signal and it's infuriating. I live in Mid Wales and not getting a phone signal is common. I've just bought a second hand satmap which uses satellite signals. So much easier, plus you don't have to rely on your mobile phone battery.
