    As a Christian I’m just going to say it’s always important to look at the lyrics and meanings behind a song and what the band members stories are, just because the music deals with ones story doesn’t mean it’s an evil song. I just wish people could realize this. And a lot of the times it’s people who don’t even listen to metal who stereotype it

      Nathan Percy I don’t really care either way. At the end of the day I have been on both sides and I prefer the side of Christ. Music is noise and nothing more. If one makes a noise squeak the reason they turn to Satan it was in their heart all along.

      I'm a Believer in the Most High God !! Is that the Creator himself came in human flesh to save us all !! Well those who would put faith in Him and the act that He did !! That is the absolute punchline !! The Creator doing this thing that He did not have to do !! But because of Grace and love He did !! but this song screams to me about a relationship. And within every human there is the Fallen nature or the darkness !! Two people fighting over who wronged who !! One saying I'm not your devil anymore !! Yes a lot of music is controlled by the elite and they control many people's perception of reality !! But sometimes it music might seem evil to some but not be that evil !! I'm not making excuses for Slipknot. I like Slipknot but they don't need to wear mask as they do. Sometimes they may cross the line but what people really feel ? Human emotion and anger or even love ?? It can be Raw and it can be painful or it can be loving !! That is life. Life is not always black and white. Right or wrong !! This song screams of a reality that most may feel today and in a world where real relationships end over trivial things ?? The reason we need a Savior ? Because everything is not black and white. You have those who judge others and they have no right to do this !! Because their closet is full of Bones and pain !! Their just hiding those sins and throwing stones at others !! That's why human beings can never ruel over other human beings !! It will take a Holy or Just Savior !! Cuz at the end ? Human beings cannot be trusted even with the best of intentions !! That is the Fallen nature !!

      Nathan Percy Dude I honestly couldn’t have said that better myself! People judge things they do not understand simply because it’s demonized by others. Sadly people do not take the time to determine for themselves whether or not something is to be just in a positive or negative way...

Step inside, see what I'm going through with this drug problem but you'll realize I'm not the evil causing it, is causing itself. But when I'm dead or past this you'll really understand what i went through. Deep stuff. I always thought it was like a depressed guy talking to someone who says they want to help but only worsen it

    Your interpretation is very accurate, in fact. This is a song representing the battle the band faces within themselves and within their relationship with their bassist who died of an ACCIDENTAL drug overdose, which was a battle they fought with him for a long time before his death, and his name, Paul, just happens to be the same name as the man you mentioned who wrote the letter regarding sin. Very interesting.

    I like how it wasn't a bash session on metal music. Im going through a lil crisis of faith and it speaks to me that his attitude wasn't hell bent on bashing the metal genre. Good to know that not all pastors are judgmental pricks.

    • @WillEhrendreich
      @WillEhrendreich 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sorry to hear that you are dealing with a Crisis of faith. Jesus will never leave you, and he loves you no matter what. Even if there are stupid and horrible men who follow Jesus, that just means that Jesus loves them despite their own evil. It merely highlights how kind and loving God is, not the other way around. My advice, which I realize you didn't ask for, is to get into a Bible believing church if you aren't already, and start serving in some capacity there. You would be shocked at how quickly you get faith and see the world differently when you put yourself in a position to pour out love and service to other people.

    I am a Christian. I love God. He is my Lord and Savior. And I must say I also enjoy my metal music. I never have, nor will I ever interpret it as being ``evil" or the ``devil's music." Not the bands I listen to anyway. Slipknot, Hellyeah!, Megadeth, Korn, Mudvayne, Alice in Chains, C.O.C. just to name a few. I've listened to metal for most all my life. And I have always loved God. And always will. I had amazing parents who loved me. And had good strong values and morals.
    God Bless💙🙏

    Here is the ACTUAL meaning(s)
    per : Slipknot's Lead singer & Drummer
    Taylor (Corey Taylor - lead singer) explained the song's meaning to The Pulse of Radio: "'The Devil In I' is really about the war inside yourself," he said. "Trying not to give into defeatism, trying not to give into negativity, trying not to give up basically. It's a struggle. It's one of the hardest things you can do, is to give into that side of yourself." And that you can have fun. Crahan (Shawn "Clown" Crahan - drummer) also explained at the song was about "finding past devils, past things, becoming one with it, and doing away with it." credit to : slipknot.wikia.com/wiki/The_Devil_in_I

Even though drums (* barrel drums to be specific for you Deathtrip ) is the instrument he plays the most & *drummer is only one of many various instruments within the percussion family. I was just quoting what Clown himself said about the meaning behind the song he wrote. See for yourself click the blue link or type it in your browser search bar. I did add the first names & main musical role for those that don't know anymore about slipknot that what they saw in this video. If I were commenting on one of Slipknot's social media pages or their you tube channel I wouldn't need to add what their talent is would I?

    You pretty much nailed it with your interpretation. The song is about what the lead singer Corey went through after their bass player Paul died from accidental overdose of prescribed medication. The doctor knew that Paul had addiction issues in the past, yet prescribed the medication anyway. It not only resulted in the death of a very loved person, but caused hell for everyone for quite awhile due to a very long court battle, and just extreme depression. The band almost called it quits, but kept going on honor of Paul.

      Veraxu I couldn’t agree more man. I started with avenged sevenfold and that just made my love for metal/rock and music in general grow so much. It also drove me to play guitar. I just love the ways we can interpret music and how we can find messages in the lyrics that help us deal with problems in our lives. Some rap is ok and all but most of it is just random prideful nonsense. Music Isn’t generally understood these days. Most people like rap or country these days because that’s what they grew up on. Most people today can’t play an instrument or they just don’t want to learn so they turn to vocals instead because in their genres, it’s easy. I just love seeing people with a real passion for music learning to play a guitar or piano, etc.

    Finally! Im just so impressed to that reaction specially it comes from a pastor because nowadays if you will goin to observe when it comes to Heavy metal the first thing that came in to people's mind is Heavy metal is satanic. I hope that they should change their mind set and overcome their being judgemental. Im a christian and i im metalhead too

    • @josuemunoz415
      @josuemunoz415 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Luisito Leyva well, most metal bands are openly satanic, and slipknot is not the ecception. Corey Taylor has said in his interviews he does not believe in God, and a grandmajority of his lyrics are antichristian. This particular song although very deep very realistic scenario from the pastors point of view the video is very grewsome. One member of the band is brutally stabbed by a group of people, while anotherone blows himself up with dinamite and anotherone lights himself on fire and then hangs himself. If thats not satanic i dont know what is, but I get what your trying to say. It is tuching a very real subject, and a very palpable problem in many relationships. Not necesarily between couples only, but in different angles of family. For example for me this song hits home in the relationship with my mom, i havent spoken to her in over a year. And im not the kind of person to hold grudges, usually im the one that tries to fix things first, but just by how long its been it'll give you an idea how bad it is. Anyhow, im christian too, i i luv metal as well. But sometimes you gotta becareful what you listen too. Specially with bands like this. Be very aware these are satanic bands and their purpose is not to do you good. The bible says satan came to kill steal and destroy. And this music is a very subtle way to do it. By making u feel identified, but make no mistake. These songs are made to depress you feed enimosity. Stay vigilant my friend dont let your guard down.

I actually think the best things about Slipknot songs are not what the band themselves wrote the songs about but how the fans interpret it into their own lives. I’m a dedicated Christian but I also love Slipknot so I don’t think people should be so quick to think that all Christians hate the band and think “SATAN”. I think Corey is a genius and you can choose to interpret his lyrics in different ways, so a Christian like me can look at it from all different perspectives. I love Slipknot and don’t think people should laugh at people of faith liking the band cause anyone can.

    The funniest thing is that everybody says they're evil, violent and satanic. In reality, they are the most relaxed and kind people, because they let all of their anger out in their music. It's therapy for them. There's a whole audiobiography on TH-cam about their story.

    I would like to clarify that the singer wrote the song as a way to vent how he felt about one of their members committing suicide. The singer, Corey Taylor, was trying to express his huge swirl of emotions of loss, grief and anger over the situation, where in one instance he’d be saying he’s sorry and that he felt responsible for his friend’s actions, and then the next instant that grief turning to anger and shouting out good riddance and don’t you dare come down to check on him or the band because he doesn’t belong there. And then on top of the direct emotions about his friend and the suicide, then he’d be sad about how he was insulting his friend’s memory by being mad, but then he’d get mad that he was being so weak by being sad. And I think that such varied and strong emotions are common to experience from such an event. “Step inside, see the Devil in I” I think referring to the huge flux of emotions and anguish he feels internally, and anger in particular. “So many times we’ve let it come to this” now feeling sad and helpless that he couldn’t prevent the suicide, or some other form of stopping your loved one from being hurt/pained by something. “Step inside, see the Devil in I” Anger again, rising up. “You’ll realize I’m not your Devil anymore” as the anger subsides, he starts feeling the inner guilt, like he was personally the “Devil” responsible for pushing his friend to suicide, and now that the friend is gone, he can’t be his Devil anymore

    This song isn't an in your face I'm never going to change kind of thing, Or a call to change it's an expression of how he's feeling in a particular moment, that's honestly how most metal songs are it's very emotion driven and while it would be nice for more of them to have a happy ending, It just doesn't always match the vibe of the song.
    The important thing to remember here is most of these guys are successful, and happily married with children. They've found solutions and they work through their problems, they just don't necessarily always find a happy ending compelling from an artistic perspective.

    Official meaning of the lirycs:
    "Taylor explained the song's meaning to The Pulse of Radio: "'The Devil In I' is really about the war inside yourself," he said. "Trying not to give into defeatism, trying not to give into negativity, trying not to give up basically. It's a struggle. It's one of the hardest things you can do, is to give into that side of yourself." And that you can have fun. Crahan also explained at the song was about "finding past devils, past things, becoming one with it, and doing away with it."

    I happen to know that the band on the whole are good guys. The singer Corey Taylor had a rough time growing up, he didnt like himself much. Here is a guy who climbs out of poverty to become a big star, all using the angst he had bottled up. He did this in a positive way with some bumps in the road but none the less, he did it. He goes out of his way for his fans even suprise visiting them in the hospital. So please dont bash on Slipknot. I used to hate them a long time ago, but as a musician myself, i began to see who they really are as people and artists and i have nothing but respect and love for the band.

    I'm not sure the interpretation of the song being "I'm messed up but so are you. Therefore you should accept me as I am." Is correct per say. I get the feeling it's as if the artist is saying that he may be messed up inside but the other person has exploited the other honesty about their issues. "Swallowed but nothing's forgiven" and "You and I can't decide which one of us was taken for granted" and finally " trading a lie for leverage" . I think it's a story about the person who's honesty has been used against them taking a stand and leaving. That can kind of been seen in the lines "I'm not your devil any more".

    This song along with the whole album was actually a eulogy for Paul Grey. A band mate that had passed away during the previous albums creation. This song represents the struggles between Corey Taylor the vocalist and Paul Grey because of Paul's drug addiction that ended up taking his life and Cory's way of saying I know we started this addiction together but now I've pulled through and im trying to save you.

    I would argue that everyone dies a few times in their life depending on how hard they push their consciousness. After the death you'll be able to look at what you left in a disconnected analytical manner because you transcended yourself. I dont think the singer is saying he won't change unless he truly think's he has transcended his full existence which is hard to accept and I would say impossible to accept as an artist because then his content would be limited. Great review and reaction guys!

    As a slipknot fan, I like how you interpreted the first few verses. You have a closer grasp to a deeper meaning in the song than you realize. I'd love to see how you interpret the song Lech by the same band. They are not as evil as they seem. Their inner turmoil is real, and the album this song came from was a concept album in tribute to their fallen bassist, and how they fell as a band from their original purpose. You should give them a deeper look, you seem very intelligent, and could appreciate them I think.

      No worries, I don't mind you asking and I'm happy to talk with you. I was an anti-theist (as in think organized religion is evil) before I was an atheist. I tried really hard to believe, but the tipping point for me was when my girl friends family disapproved of her leaving her physically abusive husband and her own mother said to her "you made a promise to god" and "what do you do to make him hit you" that really made me see how religion can warp people...he nearly killed her, she spent a month in the ICU and her mother's response was this is a sign from god for you to stay with him. that was her own daughter...so I dove into the scriptures, read the bible, qua ran, bag va gidda, nors mythology, Greek mythology ect. and realized I didn't believe a single word of any of it, not out of anger (which ppl like to assume) but out of logic...I just can't bring myself to believe any of it. I hope that was a good enough explanation, I'd be happy to keep chatting with you and hope you are well as well

    • @jordanhart2303
      @jordanhart2303 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      beliel1345 Thank you for explaining that and being open to a discussion. That sounds horrible what your girlfriend went through and it also seems wrong to me that her mother used religion to keep her in that abusive relationship and blame her for her husbands actions. I feel that people use religion and God and attempt to bend his will and the word of holy scripture to their own will often as a way of disguising their own actions (which are often sinful) as holy and upright, just as the Pharasiees did. I hate seeing this occur because it has the real possibility of turning people away from religion and Jesus because rather than take responsibility for a poor decision people tend to blame it on God. In the case of your girlfriend's mother, it seems to me that she was unwilling to see that the husband broke the biblical definition of marriage (a union of mutual love and respect between man and woman) when he hit her and refused to stop since he was not following the commandments given to husbands in the bible. Rather than focusing on the husbands reprehensible actions she chose to focus on her daughter honoring a mariage that in my opinion was no longer honoring God (in other words since the love and respect in the mariage was one sided and the husband was abusive it was no longer a Godly marriage and therefore could be broken). It is upsetting for sure to see the mother refusing to help her own daughter in that situation.
      I agree that oftentimes people use religion to their own benefit or in the case of the mother apply their inturpretation too strictly and do not look for answers outside of what they were taught. At times logic and reason are not utilized in conjunction with prayer and reading the scriptures and I believe this is a mistake that seems all to common. I believe that the scriptures and logic can go hand in hand despite the fact that many bibical stories must be taken on faith. Hope my above comments made sense and were well articulated enough that they were clear.

    • @beliel1345
      @beliel1345 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey, sorry it took so long to get back to you, I had a friend in crisis and had to help...I've had maybe 5hrd sleep since Sunday. I saw your comment but literally couldn't focus my eyes enough to read it without some sleep. Yes, your statement was very articulate and I completely agree with you . People do manipulate God and their interpretation of scripture to their advantage, for their own agenda and often times as justification for things they know are wrong. I recognized this when I was only about 8yrs old. I saw religion and the NAME of god being used to shame people, or for power or control, or even to justify atrocities. That's why I say I was an anti-theist long before I was an atheist. The church I came up in was filled with very kind and wonderful people so I was still trying to believe...I just couldn't. The day I actually said to myself what I had known for years...and subsequently now free to say out loud "I'm an atheist" was easily one of the best days of my life...I could finally be honest about it. Alot of my friends are theists or at least deists and we talk about this all the time (well this football...and scotch ect.) but always discussing, not arguing or one trying to convert the other.I think makes us look at our own thoughts or beliefs more closely, helps us grow and helps make us more open to people who may not necessarily agree with us. I'm glad you're in the discussion and I hope it continues. If it doesn't, no hard feelings, all the best and be safe: B

    • @jordanhart2303
      @jordanhart2303 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      beliel1345 No worries on the late reply man, I hope your friend is well (or at the very least better) and that you have been able to get some more sleep. I agree that it is healthy to discuss important topics like religion with people of differing beliefs in order to sharpen (and/or question) ones one beliefs as it forces those beliefs to be examened from another angle and defended. I currently live with 1 athesit and 2 agnostic/theist roomates (all great people) so I get this opporunity from time to time as well. However, as you pointed it it can be hard to find someone to discuss it with rather than argue with (differences being mainly found in the intention and tone of the conversation).
      I can understand the freeing power of declaring yourself an athesist (to a certain extent) as it allows you to see the world differently and be more carefree. However, from my perspective (at least applying the idea of declaring myself an athesist to my current perspective on life) it seems that any freeing power would be outweighed by many negative emotions. For example, loneliness, exetensalism, and increased anxiety would personally be increased without my Christain faith. To expand on this, the number of times I have struggled with issues such as anxiety (or any of the issues above and others such as depression) and recieved immense and almost immediate help from praying about my situation, reading the bible, and/or speaking/meeting with other believers is incredibly high. While I understand that this is anecdotal evidence from my own experience, many have experienced the same things as well and I believe many more have to potential to also recieve similar help and joy in their lives through preacticing and exercing the Christain faith.
      That being said, I understand from you sent that you wanted believe and accept the faith you grew up with (partially due to the good community it seems you grew up with), but we're unable to believe for one reason or another. In large part from what you have told me it seems that you found scripture (the Bible in particular) to be illogical to believe and that in conjuction with seeing people misuse the words of scripture to justify poor actions ultimatly caused you to feel a need to part ways. [Correct me if this is wrong, but this is my inturpretstion of the chats you have sent]. I could see that being the "perfect (or rather imperfect) storm" so to speak to cause you to loose your faith and become anthesist.
      As far as people misunderstanding/misusing scripture and/or using it to justify their own(or others)poor actions, I find it to be common with many (if not all) beief systems and I wish people would rethink those positions. I have even seen athesist act poorly in defense of their beliefs (or rather lack of belief in a higher power). However, the flip side is many people (theist and atheist alike) have also done many great things to help out their fellow man and defend their beliefs in respectable ways.
      As far as the "lack of logic" (or perhaps better phrased as the need to have faith and believe without 100% proof) in scripture goes, I believe that many scriptures have sound logic within them and the more I study the scripture the mlre logic I see in it even in places where faith is required.
      I am glad you are interested in continuing the conversation, as I am as well. Hope you stay safe and I wish you the best as well. JDH

    I'm not q Christian or Religious man at all but I truly connected to what you were saying about relationships. I lost my wife and gf of 10 years (high school sweethearts) an had twins boy and girl whom are 9 years of age now. But I lost them do to addiction I battled for so long and ended up losing them and it still kills me to this day. I tried to get in another relationship 4 years after mine and my ex's divorce and once I was clean but still had my demons I fought every day but she didnt understand even when I would try to talk to her. But yeah I'm huge Slipknot fan been to few concerts and I'm in my 30s but I appreciate someone who is Religious listening to the music I listen to and put your thoughts into it I admire that and speaks volumes about you as a Christian so thanks for your input definitely made me cry when you started talking about relationships and wishing the other person/other half could just step inside even if it's just for 1 min to see the "Devil In I" because I think if the other half could do that at times and see the "Devil/Demons" I battle everyday maybe I still would be with my ex wife if not her the recently ex of a year and a half whom I got engaged to and was actually going to adopt her daughter. So I wanna say thanks for taking your time and listening to the music I listen to and talking about it and the meaning cause you definitely hit the nail right on the head about the song and it not only being about relationships but also the loss of one of the band members Bass Guitar player Paul Gray whom died of an overdose which is why the album this song is on is called .5 the Grey Chapter. I actually got to see him at his last live concert performance before he died. Thanks again!

    7:06 The original members were in their mid-late 30s and early-mid 40s when this song was recorded.
    11:39 For an answer to this, I suggest listening to the rest of the album. It's mainly about their bassist who died of a drug overdose in 2010, so regret and loss are very big themes here, combined with all the other usual Slipknot themes.

    Watched an interview with the lead singer of this band. He said the influence for this song was his relationship with cocaine. His personal "devil". "To many times we've let it come to this". He went to rehab to get over the addiction. "Your not my devil anymore". First time seeing your channel, but you were so close on the analysis of the relationship aspect.

    This song was written with a lot of pain behind it, I believe it's a song about his late band member Paul Grey who died of an overdose, Corey feels that Paul abandoned them by letting his addiction overpower him, at least this is what i gather from the lyrics of it.

    I like how you started off listening to this particular song as a "lyrics" video instead of the official music video so that you'll better understand what the song is talking about. But I would love to see you react to the same song's music video next, because it's quite a sight and helps to elaborate and compliment the song in a very extreme way visually.

    The Pastor should react to three videos, two bands. First is Two Sides by Clawfinger, which speaks on religion. The next two are Eye of the Thylacine and Singularity by the band, The Unguided. Preferably listen to these three songs with the lyrics, to fully appreciate and emerse yourself in the context.
    On another note, this song is about one of the band members who died from overdosed on drugs. The band knew what he was doing and tried to stop him, but he didn't want to so they stopped trying. After dying, his wife blamed them (the band) for not doing more. This song is about the member not saving himself and lying, and is a message to his wife, saying "We are all at fault for his death because we all could have done more, and you'll realize we are not the Devil; We are all Devil's for not saving him." In the music video for this song, they all kill each other either through homicide and suicide while wearing their old masks, to symbolize that their old look died with their deceased bandmate. During the video when it shows them playing their instruments, they're wearing their new masks.
    Just giving you the context, cuz after the video who had a really close concept of it's meaning. Slipknot is often misinterpreted as being Evil or Satanic, but in reality their lyrics are very dark and subliminal, extremely subliminal. You have to read the lyrics, then fine comb through their history to connect dots on what their referencing. Slipknot IS a band I highly recommend to you, as a man of religion, to view the perception of someone whose unlike you. I give your reaction a 10/10 for at least giving relatively close understanding of the lyrics, for being a Pastor with no prior Slipknot history.

    Change is good for everyone, It helps you discover a different side of yourself that you arent used to which helps you grow. On the other hand change is really scary for a lot of people because it is going into the unknown and most people I think are scared to change how people perceive them. Anyways just my 2 cents
    Challenge: Everyone who reads this comment, try to change 1 thing you hate about yourself and I dont mean cosmetically. It will be hard at first but actually give it a genuine try and see if another door opens for you. Im doing this atm so we're all in it together! Good luck!

    Clown from Slipknot explained that the song is a "story" of facing your demons, or devils, and overcoming them to basically break free of the old shell and evolve into your next self. I'm paraphrasing of course, but essentially that's what it is. I guess in a way, this guy isn't too far off, but its more of the facing your OWN self rather than anyone else being being involved period.

    I feel like emphatically that if I were Corey, I'd feel like you completely nailed it. He's like me and his religion is his relationships with people.
    Namely, significant others
    Edit: although i always felt this was about Joey- the ex drummer
