What a shit show. This is what happens when you involve government in anything. Government needs to stay out of the way. I've been hunting all zones multiple areas since 79 as young kid. It started down hill in mid 90s.
Camp in U.P. is a shadow of its former self. Still deer but would say 1/4 of what we used to have. The U.P. is a predation issue primarily wolves.
Northern lowers has pockets of no deer too fair amounts in some areas.
Zone 3 has heavy populations in some areas too fair amounts in other areas. Zone 3 is a private land access issue.

The reason you haven't seen a pheasant is due to big AG and monoculture. Pheasants and upland birds do not thrive in corn/bean fields.

Most of the deer here in NE Michigan are in camps or on farms. Years ago, when we could bait, there were deer on state land. Being we cannot bait, there's no deer anymore. They go to the hunt clubs that have food plots and the farmers' fields...... Plus, all these early seasons just make the deer turn "smart" earlier. Problem is many of us have been managing our deer for years, we have an 8pt rule and take does as well. We feel that there is a balance in the area with cooperation from other properties. There are areas that we never step foot in such as bedding areas that serve as sanctuary. If strangers are allowed to come harvest the fruits of our labor it could all be upset. We see what public access areas for hunting and fishing look like with garbage and beer cans and the occasional tire laying around and we don’t want that. The crops are our livelihood and we treat them like a garden and don’t want the risk of being shot while walking through tall corn inspecting it or it being damaged. Also farmers pay taxes on THEIR land so why would they be obligated to let others use it?

Lived in LP my childhood and Houghton in the kewenew for college, I even noticed their leg length difference due to more snow, this with the increasing wolf populations is an issue. There are some great podcasts with GOHUNT. They talk about things like APR and the positives and negatives. On negative that I found interesting for mule deer with four point restrictions was that the were leaving poor genetic deer walk and breed due to APR and it resulted in a poor outcome against the goal. Also Michigan needs to study other states results instead of just their own biased studies.

Earn a buck program would help on that second buck. Not sure how many michigan hunters go for that second buck but if they could get the state to a one buck state and still do the earn a buck program, that would definitely help. If they would ever go to a one buck state, i dont think you would even have to do apr's. I think just doing that would help a lot. Also the overpopulation of deer could in part have something to do with the bait ban from a few years ago. Its like Ted Nugent said, banning bait is chasing people away from the sport. A big percentage of the hunters use bait for their tactics in michigan. I am not that much into baiting but that could have something to do with some of the overpopulation

I agree with a lot of what you said, I would think if we went to a one buck tag period, get rid of antler point restrictions, and use the other tag to shoot a doe. I’m not the biggest fan of baiting, but believes it keeps more people hunting because they actually see deer, especially the youth. It also seems to me the deer have evolved over the years to know corn, apples , carrots and sugar beets don’t magically fall from the sky in the middle of the forest, as they look for people perched in the trees. If they were lucky enough to escape their first near death experience, they soon learn it is only safe to feed on these treats at night. The extra doe tags should only be given where there are excess of them, not just general tags to use anywhere. It’s so hard to keep everyone happy, but what is best for the deer herd, not our self centered motives? The bottom line is, if hunters don’t see deer while they are hunting, many will give it up or go hunt in other states.

With less Public Land it is being over crowded by hunters. I tend to hunt public land during middle of the week now and see more deer because of less hunters during that time.

Just my opinion, nobody else has to agree -
We need to eliminate the buck tag for gun season, that allows shooting ANY size buck. Far too many buttons and spikes are taken every year, because you can take the stance as "If it's brown it's down". Evey year in the area I hunt, the DNR check station is filled with spike after spike, yet if you bought a combo license, you're restricted from taking a spike on the least restrictive tag.
As someone else mentioned, the public land is lacking in any deer, because the farms, private land and hunt clubs are feeding year-round. That creates the scenario of overcrowded(people) public land, that has less and less deer every year. The last 6 years I've gotten zero harvests, not what the years prior to that I had. That leads to people giving up on hunting, which means less sales every year.

Here’s the #1 problem, people became programmed by the big companies selling their products, and tell you you can grow bucks just like inside of the their high fence that they’re hiding when harvesting of their big advertisement bucks all so they can sell their products.
Michigan has had huge deer population problems and Yearly put the adequate licenses for hunters to take these problem dear because as hunters it is also our responsibility as hunter’s in helping the state manage their/our deer herd and it’s the state’s decision on how that is done and to start it’s not done by Restricting harvests on what’s on a Deers head. 🤷‍♂️
As I said it up to Us to do what’s right so the state can manage its heard “properly.”
But for some reason over the last 20 years people able to hunt private land wether Through friendly permission or threw a friend/family or now leasing are all wanting to practice growing their own deer to grow their own monster buck? but these deer were already here and were already a problem so now because of these new practices because some company tells you their product will help you grow big deer, but you can’t grow big deer if you shoot doe’s or younger buck? You know like they have to manage their high fence areas where they shoot their videos so to sell their products.
Most hunter’s in Michigan do not own the land they hunt but again for some reason they manage it like they do. 🤷‍♂️
And I can tell you for a fact the reason why I have most of my private property hunting ground is because the farmers needed the deer gone “not grown” because of the extreme crop damage that was caused and the money lost in their pocket, and Then there’s the millions caused in damages from vehicle deer collisions yearly.
So like I said, it’s our responsibility to help the state manage its heard then it will help the farmers and also bring down insurance costs cause of all of the money lost in deer vehicle collisions.
Hunters who don’t harvest and who only want to build a personal herd but bigger than what he already received only in a attempt to only grow a so-called trophy buck just for his wall isn’t How a real hunter should be because as we’re seeing now these practices are only a thorn in the side of real deer management practices.
These type of hunters are only creating a problem with their miss management practices because it’s obvious that So many have no idea about what carrying capacity is And how detrimental it can be to an area and to that animal If brought above way above it’s natural carrying capacity.
But also like I was saying most of these hunters who are on private land don’t own the land and They shouldn’t be allowed to manage it to create a bigger deer herd then only to harvest what’s on a bucks head when And only when the Hunter feels it’s the right time to harvest his so-called trophy, (You know because of his food plots and everything so it his buck), but the 50 extra Doe’s that was born and has grown in his/her 6 years of obtaining permission but refuses to harvest them over his food plot he provided for them because he choose just to shoot a buck “his special buck” but while he waits those doe’s are now destroying the natural vegetation and all the surrounding farmers crops Because of this extreme small property Miss-management plan
But then if his “non-target dear jumps the fence from his 40 acre hunting area onto the neighbors and the neighbor shoots his growing trophy is where The new arising problem in our hunter community occurs. 🤔😡
many of these ( Buck only growers) feel it’s fair to scream at badger or bully another hunter who shoots a smaller buck or heaven Forbid a smaller buck that they have 2 pictures of and already “NAMED” to put on their “HIT LIST” for their next year small spot I hope he comes back to harvest.
List just Like any hunter I love shooting a big buck but I don’t always have to shoot a big buck I love eating deer and so does my family, so we do our part when it comes to harvesting and the farmer is no longer having massive crop damage from deer so me and my kids are welcome every year and if a big buck comes by that’s a bonus and that’s what makes it exciting.
The deer hunting community needs to make some big changes on how they go about hunting because the sport isn’t just about what’s on the deer’s head, it’s about the hunt, The camaraderie with others the deer camps and bringing the youth into it so this tradition carries on.
The outdoor lifestyle was never about trophy hunting it was about providing food for the family and table enough food that will make it through the year and the gathering with family and friends for the hunts.
These companies have turned a tradition into a bank roll for their pockets and our tradition is trying to turn into a rich man trophy sport only and that’s wrong so if things don’t change for the better or everybody counts and where everyone does their part then the state will have to do even more drastic measures they already have done in certain areas and bring in private shooters and they will thin the herd dramatically and I don’t wanna see that.

You talk about antler point restrictions, one buck seasons, or earned buck tags to manage the herd. I've been hunting in Michigan for the last 25 years and I can tell you first hand accounts of the DNR taking 4 wheelers to run whole herds of deer into a kill zone where other DNR officers with automatic rifles destroyed the whole herd and then buried them. You want to talk about restrictions on the hunter but not reigning in the miss management and holding accountable the agencies in charge. Many of the hunters I know substance hunt and don't care about antlers taking doe more than anything else. So how about instead of just eliminating whole herds and destroying the carcasses. Open up more reduced cost or free doe tags and allow the animals to go to a good use, but no can't do that the government wouldn't make a profit. For them it's dollars over anything else.
Also the motorized vehicle restrictions on public lands was supposed to have a 10 year sunset, but the DNR learned they can make more money by selling the lumber if they get rid of the manicured trails.

I don't think there is a blanket policy that is going to "fix" things. I hunt public lands in the Northeast Lower and there is no shortage of deer in my area. We also have a huge number of does. Some of them have not had a fawn with them in years. They are not contributing to the population by reproducing and are a drain on the resources. I try to take them out of the picture whenever I can. While I am not a big proponent of APR's for various reasons, I would love to see a return of the "No Spike Rule" rule here. It makes me sick to see all these 2 and 3 year old bucks slaughtered wholesale while we have does that need to be taken. I let at least 1 or 2 of these young bucks go every year. All to often shortly after one comes through my stand I hear a shot from the direction he went and I know with a fair degree of certainty that someone just killed him. Sometimes I even see them being loaded along the road. It boggles the mind. Then these same people will talk about how they killed the tiny spike because it was the only buck they had seen. I wonder why that is?...smh

  • @User-nx7rs

What I could propose with piss a lot of people off but it would work. You would have to hunt in the zone where you live year-round. No using the excuse just because you have property up north in the up or in the upper lower doesn't qualify you if you live in the southern lower. And the only reason this is being discussed is because the auto insurance companies and the farmers are crying about damage caused by the deer. If the farmers that have private land with all these Farms would let the hunters access it without charging them an excessive amount of money because they're being greedy we wouldn't have an excessive amount of does in the southern half of the lower peninsula.

  • @benzy2

The issue isn’t apr or earn a buck. It’s that hunters want trophies. You’re in that problem. The state allows every hunter to take 12 deer, up to 12 of them being does. That isn’t enough to get people to shoot does. You’re trying to force hunters into what they don’t want so you have a hope of a bigger trophy. Unless you shot 12 does last year in effort to balance the heard, all I’m hearing is “I don’t want to put effort to make things better, I want to regulate others into doing what I don’t want to do”.

Year's a go it used to be one buck per season for firearm. You had to sign up to get a chance for a doe tag. With the ever disappearing farms limiting deer habitat. We find ourselves where we have been now for several year's and that is the DNR saying we have an over population of deer so the DNR made it so we can kill a deer a day. All we had to do was buy another license.
The DNR could pass a rule to limit buck's taken to three year's old or more but most people have no way of knowing how to accurately tell how old a deer is. You can't go by antler size because of bad genetics a three year old deer can still grow a small wrack. A lot of button buck's get mistaken for a doe by hunter's. So even if the DNR limit buck's to 6 points or more to be legal there will still be a lot of young buck's taken.
If you want a trophy size whitetail deer mount you are going to have to save for a private land guided hunt and they don't come cheap.
