My neighbor, the late, great Harry Adams was from Alpena.
He was a nationally known fly tyer(sp?) And wrote a column on fly tying for Field and Stream. He was a local expert on arrowheads from the Pottawatomie and Iriquois tribes who lived near the Grand River where I live now.
Harry was 75 when I was 8 and I was born in 1964. He took me fishing and arrowhead hunting in my youth.
His wife was born on Valentine's Day and I was a day later. She made me cookies for my birthday. I wish I knew her first name.
If everyone from Alpena is similar, it must have been a great place to grow up.

I was stationed there from 1975 until early 1977. I was there when the tall sailing ships came thru in 1976. I enjoyed every minute of it and never wanted to leave. But then I went to Marquette and lived in the first floor of the big red lighthouse.

I remember when they started out there that the light house had a major crack up the side of it which they seem to have repaired. It was in rough shape when the group started. A friend of my dad's (Freer Butt) first told us of the group. Back in the late 60's my cousins along with my brother and dad sailed out to the island and were given a tour by the Coast Guardsmen. It was really neat but I wish the govt. had left all the buildings there. Excellent video and it brought back many memories. Alpena is a wonderful city to visit with a lot of history including the Jessie Besser Museum and the Great Lakes Marine Sanctuary. It is a great visit to the Sun Rise side of Michigan.

“Consuming instead of creating” and “doing work for free as a volunteer” made me remember a quote from George Bernard Shaw, known as “A Splendid Torch.” Appropriate, considering the lighthouse subject.

    • @Gr8Layks
      @Gr8Layks 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.
I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community, and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can.
I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no "brief candle" for me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.
      George Bernard Shaw

I visited in and late 90s before restoration started and was amazed with how little vandalism and looting there was. Being 16 miles off shore helps, I'm sure.

My first wife told the story that her great grandmother was the first white child born in that area. No documentation but her name was Winona.

Great tour, informational. My great grandfather travled from Luxembourg all the way to Alpena in 1899, so the area is very near n dear to us. Thanks to all that help keep our lighthouses beautiful.

@@RestlessViking Hey, FYI… the TH-cam algorithm keeps “unsubscribing” my account. I’m diligent about correcting this on a weekly basis. I’m aware that this is a TH-cam anomaly… I just want you to know so you don’t have any lost revenue.

I saw this about a year ago when I went on a lighthouse cruse on the lady Michigan. I started hearing more and more about this island and stuff. I have liked lighthouses for sometime a few years ago I got into horse riding I just thought it would be soo cool go to an island on a boat ride a horse around look at the lighthouse.

What a great video. I am from Mich. but lived in the lower Pen. I have not seen into southern Mich. much . I'm from Muskegon & love the UP which a haven't seen much of but have been up around Munising. Now I live in North Carolina & haven't been to Mich since 2016. I sure do miss it.

Though it's like 50 years newer, Sherwood Pt Light House (Door County WI) was also automated in 1983. I recall the 3 man crew, supplemented by Coasties from Station Sturgeon Bay WI up till it was automated. The CG still owns the area where the Lighthouse stands and it's used as a Moral/Recreation facility for active duty and retired military folks to say. Last time I visited the light house when it was manned was in 1980 when I was stationed on the CGC Mobile Bay (WTGB-103). And in 2015, I spent a few nights in the lighthouse facility while there to celebrate the mother in law's birthday.

Hopefully you got a chance to stop in at Thunder Bay Winery and get Poppins something to drink. Their Devil's River is the wine my wife and I always keep a supply of because nobody has ever not loved it. Plus the people who own it are local.
    Great video!
