It shows them that it’s easy… until they’re 17 and then they are over it because they’ve never been challenged to embrace the suck. We live in a time where you get “buck shamed” whether you’re a kid or an adult. There’s too many people ready to cut you down for a spike. Over the years I’ve logged countless hours in the stand learning a little more each time I go. Long story short, we need to teach kid how to hunt and not how to just shoot the big buck. @@markasmaclean420Hunters need to stop acting like taking a doe is just a crappy second option. If a kid likes hunting, he or she will enjoy taking a doe if you treat taking a doe as a big thing. But if you act like taking a doe is crappy and not worth it, then the kid is going to hate it too.
@@peterpizzurro Most my deer have been does, only a few bucks 4 or bigger on one side or a cull buck every odd season. Grandpa always said, haven't found a recipe for antler. It's about stocking the freezer.
Little kids dont understand the importance or significance of a deer over 150” they will be just as thrilled about a doe. And teaching them the importance of balancing the population by forcing them to take a doe as their first deer is just as important as getting them into hunting. Not to mention all the dads out there that use the youth hunt as a way to get out and hunt early under the false pretense of taking there kid hunting is all too common nowadays.
Good comment. Trophies are nice but the hunt isn't about the trophy, or even the kill. Any hunter, kid or adult, needs to learn to respect the animal, that the kill is a reward for a good hunt. A doe is just as valuable a success as a 10-point buck. I know I'm not saying it right. You older hunters probably know what I mean.
They claim Hunter numbers declined by 30 percent cause the younger generation not picking it up. So to me taking away kids being able to shoot a buck is just adding to that problem.
Northern Michigan of the lower peninsula is up north. Majority of the country refers to that as up north and most of the country doesn't even know the up exists unfortunately
Over complicating hunting will increase more hunting violations, or run people out of hunting altogether. I'm 66, been hunting since I was 15, but I won't be hunting here anymore.
I do like the change for the liberty and independence hunts. I will probably get some hate but they are lucky to be able to hunt at all at that age. I had to wait till reached the age of 16
I don't think you mentioned the extended late archery season in the southeast. It's the whole month of January: "Archery season is extended through Jan. 31, 2025, for select counties: Huron, Kent, Lapeer, Macomb, Oakland, Sanilac, St. Clair (except DMU 174), Tuscola, Washtenaw and Wayne." I'll be curious to see if they offer cheaper antlerless licenses for that too.
If you would let me know for sure that they're putting the book out cuz I was told that you can only find it online I'm not computer person so it's hard for me to get online
@ike0G Michigan DNR has not put a physical copy out yet, but the rules are posted on the DNR website...most years one is out anywhere you can purchase a hunting license.
So during muzzleload season in zone 2 you can use a centerfire on public land? And you can shoot a buck or a doe or is it limited to private property on just antlerless deer?
In my opinion, the greatest rule change Michigan could ever do is a 1 buck rule. It solves almost every issue! No APR, better doe harvest, no using your dads “extra tag”, no youth restriction. Hunt what you want, how you want, but 1 buck only.
I hate the idea...but I do agree 100%. In my 25 years of deer hunting in Michigan, I've only filled both buck tags 3 times, and most years were buckless. I do believe that a 1 buck rule, would make those "most years" not be buckless! Bringing back baiting would be the best thing they could do to reach their goal of more doe's taken. Higher success rates will also help get younger hunters into it.
@BpLavoie Did you not comprehend... "Bringing back baiting would be the best thing they could do to reach their goal of more doe's taken"? They want MORE deer taken, and BAITING is the simplest way to get more deer taken. That's great that you hunt a property with so many deer, that you can be far more selective...and be a "real hunter". If I even see a dozen, for the whole season, I'm pretty happy with that, because most years, it's only in the 5-10 range. I do get mine (several) every year, without bait. If we could though, I would...so I wouldn't have to be out there as much. As much as I love being out there, time is limited. Going days on end without seeing so much as a hair, gets really old, really quick. Before making smug comments, think a little. Not everybody has it as good as you. It's so easy to be a "real hunter", when you've got a solid population in your hunting area. That's kinda like bragging about catching a limit at a trout farm.
I absolutely love the change they made for youth hunt but I wish they would pass the one buck tag state with a non restricted tag. This state has all the land and abundance to grow insanely big deer but most just don’t understand the importance of passing young buck and those for the majority are the ones that say Michigan doesn’t grow big deer and tbh we have everything to be a state like Iowa or Illinois but with both buck tags and 300,000+ deer getting nuked every year and most of that total is bucks is absolutely absurd and needs to get in check asap!
I feel taking away the bucks in youth hunt is great. I feel kids should have to learn and earn a buck starting Oct 1st. I’m all about kids hunting and everyone has a opinion. Good luck to everyone this year and stay safe !!
When I was a kid, I had to wait until firearm season to use a rifle for you deer. Last year I was at the river fishing and was talking to a guy that told me they got 2 10 point bucks on the youth hunt. They never got to the bow season. I think doe only for the youth hunt is a good idea. Can't those same kids hunt during the archery season?. As for veterans and disabled, I don't have the answers. But I think it's highly unfair to others to slaughter all the big bucks before everyone has a chance at getting one .😊
Why are the certain counties during the late doe season able to get doe tags for 5 bucks , while everyone in the state has to pay 20 for the same thing. If the doe pop. is the issue then why not make it more affordable considering the price of what the price of getting ur deer processed is costing the the hunter on top of the tags for hunting, and they wonder why we are losing hunters
I have a averaged 25 days in the woods hunting and countless days observing out of season. The last few years public land deer sightings have diminished greatly. The almighty DNR has yet to realize public land cannot be managed the same as private property and watch as hunter numbers continue to drop. It's pretty sad that they think it's ok for a hunter to not see a deer for 10 days in a row. I advised my nephew (in South Carolina) not to come to Michigan if they want to see deer much less shoot one. I live and hunt in the NW lower pensula.
We need to bring back baiting, one buck tag only after u shoot a doe! My insurance co USAA told me that one of the reasons that the premiums have went up is because of the accidents! Cheap doe tags year around!
Glad to see the extended doe season with reduced tag fees. This should help many farmers and hopefully save me a few dollars since I have donated quite a few deer to local food banks even with the 20 dollar tags. As far as the liberty hunt, I feel that veterans served this country to protect it. They should be allowed to harvest what they want.
im a disabled hunter.....my take on the change of taking away the bucks from us and the children should actually be done differently.....the state says that there's only 8000 deer harvested during these two hunts. As a former taxidermist it would make more sense to extend the season to a 4 day season (Friday to Monday) and implement a rule that if you want to harvest a buck you must harvest a doe first.... before you say extending the season 2 days isnt feasible from a standpoint of having people to help with hunting on those 2 extra days it can be done after work.....and by forcing the hunters to harvest a doe prior to killing a buck it serves 3 purposes: (1) it helps DNR/NRC requirements to lower doe population, (2) it gives the kids/disabled an extra opportunity at harvesting an extra animal they wouldn't otherwise, (3) it gives each family an extra animal for meat for that year.....
I have no problem telling the youth to take only does. I do have a problem telling that same thing thing to the disabled though. As far as the youth hunt in general, I have never been for it. I took my son hunting with me during the regular seasons, both archery and gun seasons and when he hunted, he carried the gun or bow, not me. As you said, we did not have youth season when we grew up and I see it as an excuse for dads to tell their kids they took them hunting for their weekend and the rest of the season they can't go with. Kids need to be included in the regular season, because its more about the hunting with family and friends experience and they are missing out on that if they only get to hunt during the early youth hunt. just my 2 cents.
Regular firearms season in Ohio is during the school week. That means I would get one weekend to gun hunt with my kid !!! That may be ok with you... But it's not ok for me and my sons ! Youth season gives us another weekend together hunting deer ! Youth season is always on weekend break from school. It's not rocket science
@@Stickbow1980 This video has to do with Michigan Deer hunting rules and regulations as does my comment. I don’t live in Ohio nor do I hunt there so I have no opinion on how things work in that state. I am however a Michigan resident, hunter and taxpayer so I will share my opinion on the matters that pertain to me and the state I live in. Having said that here in Michigan, archery deer season opens October 1st and the last day of our late antlerless deer season closes during the second week of January. You seem like an intelligent person so I will let you look at a calendar and tell me how many weekends that gives dads like you to hunt with their sons. As you said it’s not rocket science.
Honestly i dont think baiting is as big of an issue as its made out to be… those deer are gonna do the same thing over at the cornfield that they do at your bait pile theyll still meet up and eat i dont think that rule is gonna slow disease down much if at all
As a father of three boy's I can tell you that when I young man bags a buck he is a hunter for life! My older 2 boy's aren't really that into hunting because they didn't have the luck my youngest has. My younger boy didn't even wanna shoot a doe because he didn't want to put pressure on our stands before the rut. Plain and simple antlerless youth hunt means less hunters period.
I love that rule. I’m glad it’s coming into effect. I think it does. The opposite for children and gives them high expectations. That aren’t realistic come regular season.
Dave here, MLive has an article out today pertaining to this subject. R-Rep Thomas Albert from Lowell, has introduced legislation, to Reverse the new antlerless rules for youth and Liberty hunts. Personally, I disagree with ALL EARLY Deer hunts. I'm 58 yrs old, been hunting since I've been legally allowed. I've noticed much change in deer habits and movement ever since the introduction of the first Early Doe hunt 15 plus years ago. The biggest change is that the mature animals, Buck and Doe's go nocturnal and stay that way pretty much the entirety of the Deer hunting season. If the DNR wants more deer harvested though out the state. Go back to Deer season starts Oct 1. Let the Bucks and Doe's establish their territories in mid to late September NATURALLY without hunting pressure from all these early hunts, And you will get a MUCH BETTER overall harvest from Oct 1 thru Dec 31.
i do not have kids that would hunt the youth hunt anymore, nor do i have disabled friends that would hunt the special hunt, however the entire design of those hunts were to give these youths and disabled hunters at better chance at scoring as good deer as they are not as mobile as many of us and have to in most cases hunt much closer to trails and roads, i disagree with the state removing bucks as legal harvest during this season, the state is currently trying to decimate the deer herd and have been for a few years, this is merely a ply to get more does removed from the woods, as not enough hunters are taking the numbers to ruin our deer herd, everyone thinks a 1 to 1 ratio is better, ask states that have that close a ratio how many days they are allowed in the woods to hunt, ask them if they are able to put fresh meat in their freezers year after year, some of you all keep screeaming and crying for that 1 to 1 ratio and you will have 3 to 5 days hunting with a bow and 3 days with a firearm per year, I personally love to be sitting in a tree more times than i can count i passed on harvesting a deer with a bow and with a firearm due to an assortment of reasons many times i just didnt feel like gutting and dragging it that day or decided it was just to cold to take off my gloves to deal with it, its high time we hunters took control of our hunting away from state employees that have never been in the woods, shot a bow or firearm and put it where it belongs in the hands of hunters and fishermen, and biologists
Any other season I don't like is that late January hunt the DNR going to have our deer population down to nothing there's areas in Grand Traverse County Kalkaska County where you won't see a deer it was bad enough in Grand Traverse County last year during the firearm deer season I saw six deer that was it
One of the best things PA did for deer hunting was start statewide antler point restrictions. I think your state would benefit from going to a one buck state as well. I see a lot of 3½ year old bucks or older now compared to 20 years ago. And some of the bucks now being killed in this state would have been the buck of a lifetime 20 years ago as well and folks would have come from miles around to see it. The first year antler restrictions started I killed a 140" deer and word spread so fast that folks were coming directly from the woods on the same day to my house to see it like it was a 200" deer. It's still a tough state to hunt because of pressure and the fact that you need to find rugged terrain to escape the pressure, but it's like a completely different state now compared to before antler restrictions. That's awesome that you did this video for folks!
@brob-zy8zi thank you...I really agree with going to an APR state. Now, we have a few counties that do it, and we have seen great deer growth in those counties. I could see the state going to a one buck state in the future, but we will have to see. Thanks for watching.
The biggest part of the loss of the deer in the area I hunt is because they keep clear cutting and taking all the white tail food away keep cutting down all the oak trees you can blame the DNR in the state for that
I believe the restrictions on the youth hunt and late hunts the best idea they came up with in years but I don't like the new change of being able to use any firearm during Black Powder season Muzzleloader season was set up for muzzleloading not regular rifles you're taking away a sport from people who love to shoot black powder
ive quit hunting because of the control issue michigan has. somethings do make sense, but same time somethings are dumb. 🤷🏼♂️ even the fishing is goofy. they always want you to know the "new" rules..but put them out after that years books are made.
@@smmalafa1 I think the early youth hunt being Doe only is a greedy, pathetic side step from proper Deer management, same as the Liberty, and they made that greed driven policy by expanding in the urban hunting zones targeting higher hunter populous for more sales to avoid a 1 Buck season which is what's needed to start balancing the herd. Our NRC is greedy, and Incompetent like their Boss. The herd balance & Quality difference between Menominee county Michigan and Marinette Wisconsin is a mind numbingly wide gap, which the NRC has a ton of excuses for that they should be explaining to unemployment.
To complicated. If they want the harvest to make an impact on the deer population DNR needs to simplify its starting to resemble the trout and salmon regs. Does not help entice new hunters!
I actually hate this. I'm a falconer and hunt cottontail rabbits through small game season. It really sucks that I'll have to wait two more weeks to get out on state land without having to deal with deer hunters.
Northern lower state land has extremely low deer population since i was a kid. Hunting anymore is just something i still do out of passion. But more and more often i eat my tags every year. Its sad. Early firearm, using a rifle during muzzleloader, late season lmao. States a joke. Be lucky to even see a deer in a few years
I don’t care buck or doe on the nonsense youth and liberty hunts I think it should be limited to archery only!!! I don’t think those hunts should exist period just to stir up the woods with a special excuse to get out early tech kids real discipline and hard work and actually apply that to life because the reward is that much more meaningful and memorable because it’s earned not given and no man can take that away from you
Man. It kinda sucks that i can't get my boy a buck on the youth hunt. But a deers a deer for sure. Im sure he wouldn't care if it had antlers or not. However, it would be hard passing a nice buck if it presented for us. I think its important to keep a pretty low bar for the kids to get them out there. Deer hunting is a grind, and the nice weather of the early season really helps the kids out.
Until we can get the D.N.R. to agree to a partnership with the sports people on the same page, knowing that most D.N.R.dont have the knowledge needed to properly handle our outdoor resources.its not too hard to see that we sports people are more knowledgeable to properly address our outdoor circumstances better than our D.N.R.that we are paying for license and maintenance for the wildlife and the environment.where is the representation of the sports people?it seems all they are worried about is revenue and and being unjust D.N.R.personnel that claim to know what they are doing.hmmmm....😠 And as far as baiting, what's the difference between a baitpile or a soybean or cornfield? Nose to nose contact is s guaranteed everywhere in their environment.amazing rules that simply don't make sense.💯✝️🙏🇺🇲👍
The youth/handicap hunt rule is based on political science not biology. We're getting a lot of that from the NRC. Lots of hunters without kids or disabilities were seeing too many big trophy bucks in September on Michigan Out Of Doors TV. Since all game is public resource, all hunters want an equal chance at those biggest bucks. They don't like seeing them taken by a reserved class of people. I'm not saying right or wrong, just what I see and hear.
So I'll be grouse hunting in December with firearm deer hunters with center-fire rifles now? That's jacked up. Take it back to traditional muzzleloader...geez, what are they thinking
As a hunter who takes many of my friend's kids youth hunting. I do not agree with the doe only hunt. How do you get the kids excited for hunting? Every boy i know wants to brag to his friends about the size of a buck he got in the youth hunt. Was even able to see a couple bucks taken in velvet. These kids need to be excited for hunting otherwise it'll all go away. Getting the young kids into hunting should be the goal. Not saving a buck so a greedy adult can brag. Just my 2 cents. Good luck to everyone this season
It’s ok for a kid to brag about shooting a buck but if an adult does it they’re greedy? Michigan has never managed deer properly and young boys killing spikes for the sake of saying they shot a “buck” is part of the problem. Want kids to get excited about hunting? Get them excited about being providers of food for their family and self reliance. That will have a lifelong influence on the kind of man a boy will grow up to be. By far more important than bragging about the 3 point he shoots.
The badge, the honor, "the brag" whatever you want to call is embedded in the lore of hunting and is never going away. The youth season has gone on long enough to show it had little impact on on the overall buck harvest. All you have to is look at Michigan Buckpole over the last 5 years to see the results of Big if not Bigger bucks being taken in our state. The ones who wanted the rule changes, have never taken a youth or handicapped hunter into the field and seen the transformation in child's hunting journey when they've taken their 1st deer especially a Buck!! If hunting was only about meat and providing, which is a big part. Than the argument of whether they take a spike, a 3pt, a doe, or trophy Buck has no merit, it's only that "Bragg" for grown men that is the concern??
@@Andrew-bo8ct I agree in some stance but what's the difference between harvesting a doe, a spike, or a three point, or a monster buck? In my mind they are all potential food. Now if you are taking the stance of teach the youth to harvest food not antlers then yes I 100% agree.
It’s funny to see all these hunters who don’t give a damn about conservation say “ I don’t like that kids can’t shoot a buck in their one special hunt” my brother in Christ we need to get rid of all the damn doe we have. It’s getting changed for a reason 😂

It was brought up on Michigan Out of Doors that there are many disabled folks who hunt the liberty season because they can't handle the cold in the later season due to whatever their disability is.
All hail the trophy hunters. Lesser beings like children and the disabled must abandon hope and traditionalists must foreswear their foolish ethics. All must bow to the alter money and ego. They may only harvest a buck if their betters allow them, and only if the masters deem the buck worthy. No hunt may be deemed acceptable unless it feeds the ego of the trophy hunter and furthers their goals. Any other reason or objective for hunting is blasphemy and must be stuck down. Only the true believer may recieve the blessing of the hunt.
I know it will never happen but it would be great if they outlawed crossbows unless you are youth, senior, or disabled. Also need to bring strict muzzleloader back. Don’t like the idea of early antlerless firearm on stateland and finally make a 1 buck state!
If we want more kids to hunt they need to be able to shoot a buck during the youth hunt. Hunting is really falling off here in Michigan. We need the younger generation to keep it going and what better way than shooting a big buck or any buck they choose.
I don’t mean to play devils advocate but what happens to that same kid that shoots a 130” buck they’re first time out and thinks that’s how it always goes? I just feel that it teaches them on how to go on guided hunts and not appreciate hunting itself.

Go talk to a few of the kids you know and ask them about hunting; will blow your mind what some kids think of it now

I like the antlerless only requirement for youth hunt. I don’t like eliminating the requirement to use a muzzle loader during that season.
Wrong
Telling them they can't shoot a big buck if it walks past is total BS.
@@PatEding Yup I agree.. it only discourages kids from being interested in hunting all together..
They claim Hunter numbers declined by 30 percent cause the younger generation not picking it up. So to me taking away kids being able to shoot a buck is just adding to that problem.

Are there deer in the UP this year?
January season for doe isn’t going to be work. Need to cut the $ of doe license for the whole season in southern Michigan.
I do like the change for the liberty and independence hunts. I will probably get some hate but they are lucky to be able to hunt at all at that age. I had to wait till reached the age of 16
if you waited till 16 thats your parents fault legal age has been 14 forever for firearm and 12 for bow and small game in Michigan
They do, $5 doe tags
My son shot a velvet buck last year. Kind of sad to see them change the youth rule.
If you would let me know for sure that they're putting the book out cuz I was told that you can only find it online I'm not computer person so it's hard for me to get online
Don’t call it “muzzleloading” it is a exctended firearm. I wish they would open a traditional muzzleloading season. Just my thoughts
It my first year. Whats the book and where do I get it?
@ike0G Michigan DNR has not put a physical copy out yet, but the rules are posted on the DNR website...most years one is out anywhere you can purchase a hunting license.
So during muzzleload season in zone 2 you can use a centerfire on public land? And you can shoot a buck or a doe or is it limited to private property on just antlerless deer?
Missed some counties in SW Michigan for extended late doe
In my opinion, the greatest rule change Michigan could ever do is a 1 buck rule. It solves almost every issue! No APR, better doe harvest, no using your dads “extra tag”, no youth restriction. Hunt what you want, how you want, but 1 buck only.
@RyanL88827 not a bad thought...I think that may be coming down the line.
@BpLavoie Did you not comprehend...

The biggest part of the loss of the deer in the area I hunt is because they keep clear cutting and taking all the white tail food away keep cutting down all the oak trees you can blame the DNR in the state for that
Screw tags per the constitution of the united states of America we don't need to buy a license to feed your family screw em all.
Typical government. Makes it hard on the honest citizens. Time for a change.
