Airbus' CEO Would Like Another A220 Engine Option

  • The Airbus A220 currently has two models in production: The -100 and -300 in production. Both of these variants are exclusively powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1500G engines, which have experienced reliability issues - particularly over the past year or so. The planemaker previously indicated it was open to bids from other manufacturers, including General Electric/Safran joint-venture CFM International and current supplier Pratt & Whitney. Let’s look at the possibilities in today’s video!

    Having a second option is a great idea, look at the 787 dreamliner it has 2 engine options so if one of the options has a problem the other option is safe

    More thrust for the A220-500 please! Make the A220-500LR with exceptional shortfield capability as the standard model. Airlines want an A220-500 that can outrange, outclimb and outfly the A320neo and 737MAX in every respect.

    It's no coincidence that this is happening. Rolls Royce are already building a scaled Ultrafan for A220 and A320 series. For reasons we have yet to learn they don't wanna announce just how far they are with it.

    I think the cargo space would be decisive factor in choosing between the two categories. There is also the range factor. A company planning a long haul trans Atlantic flight can not go for the A220 variant. I think both A220 and A320 families of aircraft perfectly completes Airbus's single aisle family of aircraft

    I don’t know how easy it would be with legalities. I know PW put a bunch of its own development money into the C-Series/A220 which helps explain single source (much like 737M and CFM). Doesn’t surprise me though with supply chain issues on both sides, it’s a hedge. The PW1500G (19/24) is much less troublesome compared to the PW1100G (24/27/33)based on my experience.

    It's always good for planemakers to have engine options because of relationships that different airlines have with different planemakers.
    A good example is Korean Air. They decided to replace their aging A330 fleet with the Boeing 787 because of their relationship with GE. Airbus only offers a Rolls Royce engine for the A330neo so they lost a big customer as a result.

    • @CheapBastard1988
      @CheapBastard1988 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The A350 has the same problem. No other option than Rolls Royce.

    • @johniii8147
      @johniii8147 ปีที่แล้ว

      Korean specifically, it's a lot more complicated than that. A division of the company is a supplier for Boeing and the 787. They in effect are giving themselves even more business. Their are also the political ties with the US since they need military support against the north and China. Probably had very little to do with engine choice.

    • @sainnt
      @sainnt ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johniii8147 I respectfully disagree. Korean Air has a very diverse fleet of aircraft. They have a fleet of 158 aircraft, and 53 are Airbus, including A380, A320neo, A330 and even A220 aircraft.
      Their decision to go with the 787 to replace the A330 is because of the GE engines. Korean Air doesn't have Rolls Royce engines in its fleet that I know of, and both the A350 and A330neo only offer Rolls Royce engines. Korean Air has neither aircraft in its fleet.

  • @rokuth
    @rokuth ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think it would be vital for the success of the A220-500 to have a 2nd engine option. It should also be further investigated for eventually making a 2nd engine option available for newer a220-100, and -300 production. Essentially looking into the possibility of modifying, and upgrading future production models for the acceptance of 2 different engines.

  • @rmnvldz_
    @rmnvldz_ ปีที่แล้ว

    They could shift their offerings: build the A220-500(neo), cancel the A320neo if there's no more demand, make the A321neo as the new base model since it's more popular now, and make an A322neo. The A322neo will also probably be Airbus' answer to the Middle of the Market segment.
    That's just my opinion tho..
