My mother was Kapampangan. But, she never spoke to me and my siblings in her language so we never learned it. Which is why I watch this channel: it helps me learn a little more about my mother's side of my family. And growing up in America, me and my brothers never really had kapampangan people to talk to.
Her maiden name was Macapagal. I was told that the meaning of the name is one who is hard working. Because "pagal" means tired. So the name means something like one who works hard in the fields and is tired from hard-work.
But, I like the definition given by this channel. "Someone who tires you out" conjures up a warrior who is so fierce in battle he tires you out.

    • @WeTheLokal
      @WeTheLokal  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you for your comment, Diana! Yes, Macapagal to mean "one who works very hard" would also be a very valid way of defining and describing who your ancestors were. We hope our videos help and inspire you and your family to learn about our language! Luid ka!

Thank you,@@WeTheLokal. Your channel definitely inspires me. My brother married someone from Pampanga and I told her about your channel.
When I visit the Philippines in a couple of years I will go to Pampanga and see where my mother is from. :)

We the lokal have some questions for you,do we have first names? I know this is kind stupid question,of course i know we have first name but when I researched for it in internet can’t not find it anything so i want to know why we the kapampangans have first name from another country like john, danica, nicole, kevin but we don’t have kapampangan sounding first name so we don’t have first name

    • @thedigilakans12

originally in our culture, LAGYÛ is the name you give yourself after your first battle experience (with women, it's on the day they have their first period). BANSAG is the name given to you by society. PALÁYO is the name given to you by your loved ones. BINIAG is the name given to you by the woman who gave birth to you ~ BINIAG means 'revelation'... upon the time of birth, when your mother is between life and death, your ancestor gives her a vision of how you would become as a person... and that is the name she will give to you after your first bath...
PAMAGAT are names reserved to the nobility. TALIPANPAN are pseudonyms or false names used to decieve one's enemies...
So you can give yourself a kapampangan lagyû once you have faced your first battle(the turning point of your life.) You can do it as you realize. Sometimes college, or quizes, or exams, or finding job/doing a new business to the point losing your loveones, it can be the motivation for you to give a lagyû. My biniag is Pearce Mark Anthony but I have given myself a lagyû and it is a native kapampangan name, Aldo.

I know this guy, he's a Panganiban. Apparently his surname was Tagalog ("pang-sanib-an", over time the s was dropped?), though he is through-and-through Pampang̃ueño. Could you explain how a full-blooded Pampang̃ueño have a Tagalog name?

    • @taramkalis2703
      @taramkalis2703 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Many Tagalog words were borrowed from Kapampangan so proper research should be conducted. First need to learn what the root word is. I am not an expert but can it "anib"? In Kapampangan we have a word called "Anid" , rarely used in Angeles at least.
anid. n. suspicion. Active verb and its
infinitive, to suspect, to conjecture, to
mistrust. P. 1. the indications, or signs, or

During Spanish colonial era many Kapampangans were sent all over the Philippines as soldiers, encomienda and suppress rebels so for example David, Viray clans. They are all over the Philippines but ancestry lead to Kapampangan. There is so much more to discover, its unfortunate majority of Filipinos don't see Culture as essential.

Both are members of the same Central Philippine Language family it is not unusual to see words shared in more than one language. But due to that Spanish decree that allowed Kapampangans keep their indigenous names majority of such names are most likely Kapampangan origin.

All new loan words or words borrowed from other languages retain their spelling
and pronunciation in the original language. To render them in their phonetical form is
very confusing: e. g. rush, rash, if spelled ras would confuse the reader; Romanized, to
romanize, if spelled romanáis, would confuse the reader as to whether the adjective or the
verb is meant; an alternative is to supply in parentheses the phonetical pronunciation.
Furthermore, the use of c before a, o, and u is utilized as a means to immediately
distinguish Capampangan from Tagalog and other Philippine languages ( in print or
written form); besides the fact that even with the use of pure abakada orthography, many
Pampangos especially the young, who have not been well exposed to Pampango literature,
find it difficult to write or read their amanung sisuan (native language). The use of c serves
as a ready identification of Capampangan in written or printed texts. I do not see any taint
of colonial mentality in it. Besides the use of c serves to acknowledge the works of the
great writers and poets who all wrote in the 'hispanized' orthography in the 'golden age'
of Capampangan literature and culture. There is no point in abolishing all historical traces
in the development of the Capampangan language.
Another major adaptation is the use of an underline on the vowel that receives the
stress or accent in the pronunciation of the word. This could be found in E.C.Turla's Classic
Kapampangan Dictionary. Many Pampango readers or writers may find it cumbersome
to distinguish or use the usual diacritical marks used in English and other languages; like
the à á ä ä á. Aside from the use of the underline to indicate stress or accent, the use of â,
ê,î, ô, û is used in the vowel ending of many words to indicate its guttural or circumflex
pronunciation; likewise, the use of g to distinguish it from gg, especially in the nga words
peculiar to Pampango: ngeni, ngongo, panalangin, bungi; the use of gü in some words
of Spanish or English origin, e. g. vergüenza. In multisyllabic words where no underline
appears under the vowels, all the syllables are given equal value.

My family surname is laughable and we were teased in schools. My theory is, as if this was to name shame my (2-3??) great grand father who was a land owner and womanizer, we are small family and we are all originated from Central Luzon, and if your surname same as mine?, I will investigate who are your parents and most of all?, you is your father, and my immediate relatives are not allowed to date anyone in our town.

Perhaps rootword is "Apun"? If so this what Bergano listed with Samson translation.
apun. n. Yapun, or apunan, the supper. | | nv.
to roost, mamapun, minapun, mapun, like
the fowls, hens. Active verb, to sup or eat
supper at roosting time. P. 1. and 2. what
is eaten at supper. Verb of Mi, neutral,
one who eats supper, or be given supper,
also, manapun, one who sees to it that the hens are in their roost. P. 1 panapun, the
chickens: piapunan, the roosting place, or
      the place where they roost.
      Fuerza = Force in Spanish.
Your surname uses C and that already indicates a good chance you have Kapampangan ancestry because its pre Tagalog orthography and used during Spanish colonial era.
