This is a great video! As someone from Abilene these are the reasons I love my hometown! I was looking for history of Abilene, but this is great too! ❤
When I was working in Abilene in the 70's there was a cool dance hall named Ponderosa. I had a lot of fun there. Don't know if it is still around or not. The beer was cold and the ladies were good two steppers.
What are people like in Abilene? If you are black or Hispanic will you encounter any discrimination? In come cases there are distinct social lines that people are not allowed to cross because they are subject to whites being totally in charge. It may not be overt or hostile treatment but it can be enough to make someone feel bad.
I moved to Austin. I was born and raised in Abilene. It has probably changed a little but they did not like long hair, Hispanics or Black people much. (all my friends) not everyone was that way of course but there ar to many churches and too much religion and I am a Christian.
Slow pace? I have owned property in Abilene for 26 years on Cole Drive, not even a main thoroughfare. Cars come by so fast on that street, and have for the entire time I have owned property there, and the police don't even give it a second look. People in that town only have two settings, full speed and dead stop. There is nothing leisurely about the driving habits there, if anything more traffic enforcement and even more intelligent planning is needed for the traffic control system. As for the weather, that is one of the things that would attract me.
I loved Abilene and wanted to move there but every time I went through it a disaster happened to me. It was like the city put a curse on me. Port Aransas treats me good! Getting ready for my annual month on the island!
Not fast pace?! Drive slow?! So many wrecks due to speeding, inpatient people driving stupid for instance the person that killed my dad in traffic. This is ridiculous Safety first people
Who cares bout sentry . I’m from Corpus Christi & lived here before. I hated it then & I hate it now but my family are getting older so I came to help & still hate it nothing good comes from Abilene . But I’m stuck like chuck !!! If I had money I’d pack my crap & really go home. Unfortunately we were all born here & this is where my family is at. God help me.
@@kashmoneykaiikaii Man I get it. If it wasn’t for my mother I would never have come here. With all these church’s here you’d think they pray the curse away.
There's also a huge teacher shortage. I've had a few teachers just quit because the students will threaten and bully them. Especially in the middle schools.
I am considering taking the job in Abilene. My wife however doesn't want to go there because she says that the crime rate is high. I've never heard this about Abilene can you verify?
Not any good employment options. Thats how people get stuck here. Cost of living sounds good til you realize there's not really any good work options unless it's oilfield
There are jobs, just most of them are very demanding jobs. Factories, warehouses, restaurants, grocery stores. I personally am a registered dental assistant and am doing pretty well for myself. Only took me three months to get the schooling done for it and most places here in the medical field will pay for the schooling.
I drove thru Abilene 5 years ago. Stopped at the old downtown area and fell in love with those old bldgs.

Abilene has a beautiful downtown area. The open spaces are pretty.

I cant stand the uppity people.
Agree!!! Lived there for a decade. SO glad I moved!
It's cheap and relatively safe. But the quality of people here is trash. Very clicky and snooty and not super welcome of new people.
All sounds good.
How about ground water? If one wants to homestead in the surrounding rural areas is it difficult to get good wells?
I didn't hear "tornadoes" mentioned. Having grown up in West Texas, I know that's a concern.
There's also a huge teacher shortage. I've had a few teachers just quit because the students will threaten and bully them. Especially in the middle schools.
My ex was a teacher and it ruined our relationship because it was so stressful for her.
Thats why i go to school somewhere right outside abilene
AISD is horrible just all around
Mesa. There are mesas
Crime rate in the city?

The crime rate is not that bad, but there’s nothing to do in this town. I live here so I’m now.
A few wanna be gangsters. Meth is bad which leads to crime. But I dont think its horrible
How about employment opportunities for newcomers?
