The Penn State defenders covering the pass really took it to the Miami receivers during this game. They hit with pronounced intensity during the entire game, and they said after a while the Miami receivers looked like they really didn't want the ball anymore.

I remember hearing one of the PSU dbs saying that was the strategy. Hit their wr's hard and often. By the 2nd half they didn't want to catch the ball.

Really baffles me how anyone can make a "the better team didnt win" claim when the ball was turned over 7 times. I would say the better offense didnt win for sure. But the better defense and special teams sure did.

Rowland Buck - exactly - even so much of what Irvin said was so dismissive. Hard hitting? Oh nooooo. Not at all.
Look - the commentator had it right. The only player to actually man up about it was Jerome Brown.
This is basically the biggest case for a learning experience to be humble, not brag, be a team, and Highsmith realized that.
I watched this game live as an 11 year old and remember almost every play.

ridiculous OP, penn state had a smart defensive coverage plan and hit hard. Miami won every other category. In the end penn state won but ridiculous take. lol miami defense had a much more dominate performance. penn state had one drive the entire game. hey penn state won so it is what it is.

I watched that game start to finish back in '87. It was on a Friday, so my family had a big watch party down with the old men playing dominoes. My impression was that Miami had more talent overall on offense, but that Miami was poorly coached compared to Penn State. Miami couldn't handle the zone coverages they were seeing and made mistake after mistake against them. Testaverde seemed to freak out when he saw things he didn't expect. And, most importantly, the Miami coaching staff failed to make offensive adjustments. Penn State outcoached Miami. Jimmy Johnson got had by Paterno. Miami had more talent, but talent doesn't win. Well-coached football teams do.

Vinnie was smoking all year long and had just whipped the PSU D on that last drive.
In hindsight you run Alonzo but Miami was a passing team, they passed all year in, and PSU knew they were going to pass it is just that simple.

I watched this game live as an 11 year old and remember almost every play. But the week before and the hype built up for it almost handed it to Miami. For those too young to remember, it was the only game on that day - Jan 2nd - and the first true example of a big college championship game of 1 vs. 2. But it was also billed as good vs. evil. Brilliant. Not sure who at Miami came up with the idea of putting on military fatigues, but it makes you wonder if someone paid them to do it? Who knows?
So much of a difference between what Irvin said being so dismissive and Highsmith being the statesman. The only other Miami player here to actually man up about it was Jerome Brown.
This is basically the biggest case for a learning experience to be humble, not brag, be a team - and Highsmith realized that.
