  • Which is the best mapping method for you? There are two main workflows for projection mapping your house. The first I call the Outline Method and the second I call the Orthographic Method. In this video I explain both approaches to projection mapping and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each. I also talk about the Luxedo system.

First time I saw your Ortho method I was blown away...I still haven't perfected it, but the potential is great.

I really value the flexibility. But there's more than one way to skin a cat!

I am going to do projection mapping on a logo that consists of 4 letters ( 4m wide and 1.70m high)
Is it better to do the orthographic method? Or can i import the EPS file and make the showdesign in AE and later do the mapping with Qlab? And still be accurate?

Hi - I replied to your email but here's the response (with a little addition for clarity): Do you already have your projector position locked off? If not, yes you’ll want some flexible method where you can map the letters from any projector position (like the orthographic method). What you describe (designing with your vectors in AE then mapping in Qlab basically IS the orthographic method - design first, map later).

I think the Ortho is a great method, but your projection is primarily on one plane - which is 'front'. Would you recommend this method if your show takes place on two planes (i.e. the front and the side of a house)? If so, then the method you showed in Blender might not work since that took your photogrammetry model and displayed it on one plane (front). Would you recommend doing the outline method in this case?

If I had a house on several planes I would still use this method. In Blender, you need to export images front-on for all your projection surfaces. For me, yes, that's just from the Front camera but for someone else that might also involve Left or Right cameras. Then when it comes to composing your show, you'd need to assemble the surfaces side by side so there is continuity across them. It's like your house is a paper model and you are unwrapping it and laying it flat

@@LumaBox Thanks for this answer (and question.) I successfully used your Ortho series and store content this past Christmas season. I was wondering how to expand this to other sides of the house. I figured stitching together the planes was the answer. Follow up question: How would you scale your After Effects composition for the elongated wall surface? I'm guessing a custom aspect ration which preserves the 1920x1080 output for the approximate pinned projector angle so you don't lose pixel quality?

@@RezRuns Yes I think you've got it. Try to compose within 1920 x 1080 per projector (if that's their resolution). If it helps you to compose the whole show as one big composition, just make sure it's big enough so that when you split it back out into 1920 x 1080 outputs for each projector you're not having to scale it up.

Does anyone know what projector may work for my house which is 51ft wide and 17ft H with a throw distance of only 18-20ft?

Hi - I think I emailed you separately about this. How is your search going?
