Eridan was 13 while he was dealing with all of this. With grappling pretending to believe in the hemospectrum, thinking he needed to be a villain, wanting to be loved, not wanting to be abandoned, jealousy, abandonment, his bitterness, and his resentment. Through his lines both in the comic and PQ you really see how much he hates himself and how much he just does his fake plans of slaughter for attention and because he believes to be a proper “high blood” he NEEDS to be that way.

One thing that always hurts my heart is that Eridan is the Prince of Hope. The Prince class is a class of destruction, so he was literally destined to destroy hope itself, both in himself and in those around him. It's tragic.

But he was so self destructive and miserable, he was drawn to destroy hope, even subconsciously, his first instinct when seeing angels (beangs made of hope) was to hunt them
@@aleksabanjevic8316 Well, other people destroyed him just as much. Feferi basically used Eridan as a beast slayer for her lusus. As soon as that thing was dead she immediately dumps him with a cheerful "let's focus on building something new" with no once ounce of consideration. Which shows her true nature within since she was meant to be a morail regardless of how homestuck or the fans try to depict her. He also gets ghosted by his kismesis at the time, which make sense but you think over the course of several issues she would of messaged him once.
Eventually Eridan tries to form new friendships and relationships with others but is rebuffed. In many times insultingly. Hope is attached to relationships, all hope players have a attraction/ repulsion dynamic to them. It's kind of hard toi have hope for the future where you're just brooding alone in your hide out and being told by everyone you're repulsive. He actually stops seeking relationships beyond associate/ friends very quickly and becomes defensive of the fact - as shown where he gives his gun to a player and has to make it clear that it's a purely platonic act of legacy out of nowhere -
The only hope Eridan actually had was Karkat. He had no one to interact with otherwise. He had no future plans - they're all gone - and his main hobbies involved collecting doom weapons and battle tactics for his low blood purge - they're almost all dead. The fact he dosen't start killing them now, by the way, is a show of Eridan true inner nature - When Eridan actually acts out he no longer had any ties to any of the trolls - just as much their doing as his. The sonfg put it best. He was under no obligation to ally or work with them they ignore or disrespect him - then rightfully defended himself when others attacked. When he was attacked first actually by the mage of doom.
Princes always start off unstable. They actually need a slyph or support early on - notice he become stronger and gains a little bit of hope because of jade. - he might of made it. Dirk was much the same but luckily dirk self conscious, heart nature made him too self analytic to let his destructive side loose on people had a real connection. He had friends. Eridan didn't. He had a friend who's connection was waivering because he was the odd duck out and karkat was friends with half those people.
Eridan could've still been a Prince of Hope and destroyed his fundamnetally flawed and racist view of the world to grow as a person
unfortunately for him he was last in the "respect from the story" department, being behind even tavros and equius

Ya know the whole of Homestuck is so interesting. I always forget that everyone we are following are in fact, children. They all act so much more mature than that (generally speaking) but when you think about it, these are a bunch of barely teenage kids responsible for making choices that have dire consequences. They are children that have been given this burden, while still having to learn who they are and, to some degree, what the difference between right and wrong is. It’s truly tragic when you think about it that way.

@@kidneystonermusic the beginning is very odd and it kinda gives the impression that you are almost supposed to know how this world works.
Once you get into later chapters and the trolls are introduced it is much more entertaining and engaging, so I would highly recommend sticking it out until you can get later into the series. Even just a chapter makes a huge difference in how good the story is.
Growing up is defined by realizing Eridan had so much potential and deserves better than everything he got.

I cant help but reflect that there are moments and thoughts that mirrored Eridans growing up, hating myself yet not understanding why others disliked me, getting angry at others when I should of been bettering myself. We are all dumb when we're young, like Eridan
Honestly I always felt like Hussie had some sort of odd interaction with an Aquarius as a teen or something because literally every other troll got some amount of respect or closure except Eridan. The other trolls even openly scoffed at the idea of bringing him back when they had the chance and Hussie openly admitted to disliking him the most out of all the characters. Hussie wrote Eridan sympathetically but then proceeded to treat him like actual garbage even more so than character who's entire personality was "shipping cat girl" or the "sweaty horse lover"
@@robertcommonsky6248 To me it always felt like Hussie didn’t base the negative part of Eridan on another person. It feels like he put all his own personal hate of himself into Eridan. The level of feeling completely displaced while know exactly what he is supposed to be doing always felt incredibly personal, self loathing, distrusting yourself, distancing yourself personally to not be involved with others, just feels too personal. I think that’s also why he didn’t get closure, Hussie felt he didn’t deserve it, so Eridan didn’t either. Obviously this is pure speculation, but it feels right to me.

When I first heard this song I thought that Eridan was a backround character that was a pirate in some kind of a videogame.
He was a prince, but he wasn't a good one, he was desperate for attention that he never got so he'd go to bars and such and one night he played a card game with 11 "people" but he broke the rules in the game and ended up killing all of the other players.
"And now I think my calling is to break apart and fall to pieces" He can't overcome the fact that he had to run away and hide because he's now an outlaw.
"Better yet invent a brand new method of ascension" He wants to make his own rules and be the prince he was supposed to be.
"I'm impressed you've managed to survive" A girl pirate finds him and recognizes him to be the prince.
"But rest assured we'd all be better of dead than alive, cause when they get ahold us we'd all be better fried" The king is killing every outlaw in horrible ways.
"I'm suprised that nobodys considered switching sides" Eridan is suprissd that the pirates and outlaws don't just hand themself over and be spared but continue fighting bravely.
"So here I am, repectfully and royally destroying any chance of getting back on your good gills" The girl pirate who found him started teaching him about how to be a pirate, and he knows he's dissapointing his dather but he doesn't care.
"And I dont mean to be hurtful but if yellows the new purple, well then bleedings the new breathing" He's one of the pirates now, he wants no harm to his family, but he wants things to be right.
Something happens here and the pirate girl hurt Eridan in some way.
"I might be your killer but you'll never be my queen" Out of anger he kills the pirate girl.
"So put away your laughter" The last thing the girl did was laugh.
"I'm done with black black-handling and red pandering, it seems" He's done with trying to save the world in his own way
"That I am just pathetic" he feels guilty about killing her.
"I wont be overlooked" She had said something that made him really mad.
"I'm past the point of fishing to get back up on your hook" He knows he can't go back to his old home
"I've made a manifesto" He knows everyone wants him killed because of what he had done
"I've been bested by a crook" He got into a bad fight and at this part he got hit by some weapon
"But never more!" Sike he wins the fight and gets cool scars
"I'm planning on reclaiming what he took" Eridan is going to try to get the throne from his brother that took the lead after his father randomly died.
"So what did you want me to say- sorry?" He had a fight to get the throne but he lost and his brother said if he'd say sorry he'd get to live
"Should I apologize when you ignore me?" Eridan was always ignored while his brother was praised
"Didn't ask to be right" Eridan still thinks his actions were right, even if many innocent died
"Or to be lonely" he had always been left out
"Or to be hatched into an ugly story" He wished he was never born.

In the end his life flashes through his eyes as he dies.
After reading homestuck I realized I was so wrong.

I just got into homestuck like, two weeks ago, and I’m honestly sad at how dead the fandom is. I get that it came out when I was like, four, but still....
I know that people really don't like Eridan, but I just feel bad for him. He's the equivalent of 13, nobody has it figured out by then. He's just an emotional kid with not so good self esteem doing what he thinks is the correct way of interacting with people. All the "I'm pathetic" stuff sounds annoying to be sure, but it really shows whats going on behind all the douchey stuff he does. He's that kid in middle school who bullies you because he's insecure and doesn't know how to cope with it.
He was the Prince of Hope as well, meaning he thought he was supposed to save his ‘friends’ and give them hope when really his purpose was to destroy it. He was a kid who had always been an outcast and clung to the Hemospectrum for dear life because it gave him a place where he belonged. No child should be put under that kind of pressure, so I don’t really blame him. I love Eridan so much.

@@gallygumn5459 Vriska was the same age, but far worse than him. At least Eridan showed actual signs of being a good person when people were nice to him (ie Kanaya when she made him that wand). Vriska was just a massive prick through and through. Him vaguely resembling an incel doesn’t change that.
@@zenzenulous2243 Vriska is wicked and can be a bully or a murderous psycho to the people she dislikes, but evolves to feel actual sorrow for her actions and take responsabilities for them, though in the end she is still a huge bitch to Jake and Tavros, and stays overall less scrupulous than average, since she considers useless to keep grudges for conflicts that has been resolved.
Though I passionatly hated Vriska during my read, her actions are more justified than Eridan's, as she is written to be an embodiment of the expression "the end justifies the means", and usually have a greatest interest than her own pleasure (though we could say her ego is her main motivation, she does work to get it out alive with most of her crew, and put herself at risk for that). We can't say she is a "good" person, but she has a nobility of soul and great qualities to compensate.
Whereas Eridan had evolved for the worse, and is killed early, imo to show that there wont be improvements/ evolution, just like Feferi, Aradia, Sollux ect... (if you consider, like me, that they all have been killed because they wouldn't need to change, or wont have to). While he is described as liking action, he isnt presented as someone that takes the initiative in situations of trouble. His involvement in the sburb seccion is barely mentionned (though it is the case for half the trolls) except for his grudge against Sollux and his flirting, and he isnt much active in the asteroid/laboratory either. In his text, he mostly flirts, rants or whine. While Karkats memos were a clusterfuck to begin with, the reaction of his past him to karkat announcing (probably not explicitly enough, I agree) the murder of Feferi was to try, again to flirt with him.
But I gotta say, I mostly base my opinions of Eridan by judging hiw hw is portrayed by Hussie in the comic. Between Eridan and Vriska, one is clearly shown as smarter, more competent/ useful, with stronger bonds and more self awareness. I also think there is a reason Eridan doesn't get any heroic moments or scenes that could make him more sympathetic.

We all can't lie, we all like to revisit our Homestuck phase. Whether it be beautiful music like so, or fanfic written to please you, we all love and still revisit this fandom. It's nice to see that it's been alive since 2009. Impressive I must say. You did a good job Hussie, GG dude.

It's amazing after all these years, nobody has realized that the entire reason he is the prince of hope is because he was oppressed by expection of his blood color, and therefore secluded himself to his own imagination discerning what the expectations of a violet blood meant. No one told him he could he his own person, and therefore he abolished his own Hopes of ever being more than a king of the sea.
I love the music. But listening to the lyrics, it does remind me of just how little we really know of Eridan's character. We know he was one of the few who advocated for the hemospectrum, but we also know that he hated all landdwellers. The closest human equivalent I can come up with would be the Nazis, advocating for a very specific type of 'human breed' and killing off the others? He was also constantly vying for attention, but as the song says, couldn't keep the two quadrants he managed to fill. Keep in mind, Feferi did not break up with him because he was flushed for her, it was because she entered moirallegiance with him only out of necessity. My best guess into his personality is that he is unable to connect with other beings, despite wanting to. His frustration with his inability to connect/understand may be the reason behind his genocidal tendencies.

SugarySpoon Yeah, in a douchey round about kind of way. His Beforus self just wanted to embrace his greasersona and find love. His Alternian self was a killer and a slaver, but he was mostly just performing his duties to serve the Condesce, and he despised the torment of lower blood castes for the sake of pleasure.
I finally got into homestuck after years of putting it off and it really hurts to see '3 years ago' and in a lot of cases '8 years ago'.
I will never forgive myself for not reading it earlier, I would give anything to go back and read it when the fandom was alive or for the fandom to come back, it's painful to see how few people there are now :(

i love both eridan and gamzee, but lets not forget gamzee never wanted to kill anyone, he got sober and went insane so he couldnt control himself while eridan knew what he was doing. i still love both of thhem tho.

I see lot.ofnpeople cringing at their Homestuck phase, well I didn't read it back when it was at it's height, and honestly while some fans were overzelous back then, this story was legitimately well made, both in the comedic and the serious moments and frankly none of you should be ashamed that you like it :)

for me instead of cringing at my homestuck phase i just got back into the fandom
i cringe because i was a fucking weeb back when i was 12-13 reading homestuck. i was so ugly about it i would say HoNk like i thought i was the coolest fucking person. obviously now that im an adult and i can fully comprehend the story and make my own personal understandings and views on the characters and story, it is a part of my childhood and im not ashamed to say i read this god forsaken hell spawn of a well made comic.
How a fandom acts isn’t a good indication of how good the piece of media actually is, there’s no such thing as a cringe interest! Just how you present your interest.

Yeah this song about the character Eridan. Every line is very important to his character and what he goes through in Homestuck
I know this isnt a new statement, but its easy to forget that they are kids. Actual children. And when you look at eridan especially in the light of a moody 13 year old whose also a member of an already emotionally volatile murderous species, everything he does makes sense. Its not morally right, but it makes sense

eridan is such a perfect combination of "set up for failure" and "drove the stick into his own bike spokes". i am empathetic towards him, dont get me wrong. but i think hes woobified a bit too much in the fandom. he did have a choice, he didnt have to become a vengeful incel. its like a lot of incels irl honestly. the tragedy with him is knowing hes just a kid and seeing his potential, but also adamantly refusing to get better at every opportunity. he cries to karkat about no one visiting his planet, but that was mainly because he insisted on enraging the angels, making it a dangerous place. not to mention his itchy trigger finger. and when asked why *he* didnts take the initiative and leave to be social, he used killing the angels as an excuse, completely ignoring karkat when he points out that he wasnt supposed to be doing that. he had so many chances and just kept digging. theres nothing sadder than someone who wont help themselves.
I come back to this every now and then and always reel at how "And I don't mean to be hurtful but if yellow's the new purple well then bleeding's the new breathing" is such a RAW line like holy SHIT

My personal thoughts: Eridan did his bad things, but I feel like it could have ended differently if people tied to help him. Feferi could still spend some time with him and maybe ask Kanaya to auspitize him and Sollux. If Eridan moved over Feferi and stopped being racist, he and Sollux could have become friends- I mean they're both nerds who likes science. Kanaya, Karkat and even Nepeta didn't mind his presence, so maybe could spend time with him too? Also, he's a 13-YEARS OLD KID!!! 13-YEARS OLD. I personally love Eridan, cause he's pretty relatable.

People bash Eridan for being toxic and nasty to Fef.
From where I see it, Feferi had _no appreciation whatsoever_ for the horrible job he did for her, she just either didn't or couldn't understand. She had the sense to be his moirail, out of obligation alone, but then didn't have the energy to put in the effort required, so overall it was a pathetic and ultimately failed attempt. Her expectations of the world were immature and skewed by her cushy lifestyle; she was ignorant in a way Eridan never had the luxury of being, considering he had to be out murdering lusii in order to prevent the deaths of the masses. I can only imagine being responsible for that amount of bloodshed, growing up with the knowledge that should you ever slip and allow yourself to feel bad about it, you might die and leave that responsibility to squash the one you love.
When you have to look a child in the eye as you drag away the body of their only parent, not once but on a _regular fucking basis,_ I'd say you'd develop some pretty toxic coping mechanisms. If you could convince yourself that you hated the children, that you believed they deserved the neglectful death being forced upon them, then it would probably make seeing yourself in the mirror a little easier. You'd be less tempted to just kill yourself and be done with it, certainly.
Feferi wanted a sweet, enthusiastic, _unbroken_ moirail to sit around and train cuttlefish with, someone who didn't make her feel guilty or responsible, someone who worked perfectly with what she wanted her life to be.
Eridan just needed a hug from someone who didn't think that was a chore.

this! dont get me wrong im not a feferi hater (there are not many of those)cause theres no actual reason to hate feferi, she had good intentions and she was killed in such a sad way, but some things about her just irked me and theres defintly reasons to be annoyed by her or to not like her. her ignorance and naievty would make me dismiss her as a character. she was super unrealistic about a lot of things and though she cared about her friends, PERSONALLY, i feel fef was very unselfaware and idk i just cant mix with that

why does this sound like how my depression feels, but in a good way? it makes me feel better about having depression in the first place. it's beautiful despite it's name.
the best thing about eridan is that most of his misery is his own fault. He and Feferi never worked out because he kept her in a quadrant that he didnt reciprocate and was never honest about his real feelings for her, frustrating her to the point where she couldn't handle it anymore. He never found success in any of his romantic pursuits because he tried too hard and put everyone off with his insistence and desperation. He pushed Karkat, the nicest person on the team, and perhaps his true moirail, away because he always came to him complaining about all the mistakes he made while never bothering to learn from any of them. Eridan was the most pitiable troll in Homestuck until he finally snapped from hopelessness and frustration, and most of it was his fault. And that makes him much more relatable.

I thought Eridan was flushed for Karkat, not pale. Karkat even mentions Eridan making a "red solicitation" move onto him in one of his memos. But it could have been pale on Eridan's end. Also like, I think the reason why Eridan was hitting on everyone was because he was on the rebound with Feferi breaking up with him at the beginning of the game. It didn't seem Eridan ever hit on anyone before the game, since he talks to Karkat and Kanaya casually without hitting on them before the game.
Still, Eridan was the cause of most of his own problems. But also like, he didn't hit on *everybody*. It didn't seem like he tried flirting with Aradia, Tavros, or Gamzee. I assume because he doesn't find them attractive. He was attracted to his other friends though; particularly pitch for Sollux, ash for Kanaya, and red for Feferi, and red/pale for Karkat.
@@Palepetal eridan made a romantic solicitation on just about everyone whether it be red or black. My point is he acted more pale towards Karkat than he did with Feferi, and Karkat was seemingly cool with that until the murder stuff. There was even a time where Eridan went into one of Karkat's memos seeking some advice and Karkat was like "I got you bro we'll talk later"
I think I had a anurism after realizing this basically spoiled all of horrorstuck but used references so specific that you would have to know them already to understand them.
It's sad, because I was in preschool when Homestuck came out. My friend showed me about two years ago and now I feel like I'm the only one left that loves the fandom 😂

That moment when you love Eridan because of the s*it he went through and just the fact that his genocidal tendencies were probably brought on by SOMETHING that went to shit in his life. And then you add the whole thing with Feferi. Eridan is very misunderstood and hated for the sole reason that we never got to see enough of him or know much more about him. Ues, he wanted death to all land dwellers, but maybe something happened and he snapped. I love Eridan because there's so much up to interpretation with his past and the facts we don't know. I love him because he really did LOVE Fef, and he shattered his heart and stepped on the bits left when she quit being this morial. I LOVE Eridan because when he loves you, he REALLY, TRULY LOVES you.
