If you are tied to a desk, talk on the phone or are stressed out this spin top is for you. The Executive Catch spin Top is designed to relieve stress by spinning a top that will stay in one place. You won't have to chase your spin top around your office. I use my spinning top while watching TV. Takes a little skill, but you will catch on.
This is installment number three in my Whimsical Spin Top series.
You can purchase one here. woodpops.com/product/woodpops...
I use a 1/2" Robert Sorby #840H Spindle Gouge which I absolutely love. It cuts like butta. amzn.to/2VqW7ZI

Ok we have our 2nd review in from Les.
"thanks for the template. I finished my first "catch top" today. Base and top out of oak with the help of your template, videos, and diagram (included with template).
Turning, sanding, and finishing (with shine juice) took about two hours total. I estimate, once learned, the process should take me about 30-45 minutes.
The template is an excellent guide. Edges are sealed to keep it strong enough to test widths while the lathe is turning. It would have been helpful to have the starting dimensions of the wood blank --especially the length. I added up the individual segment lengths to get to 71mm + 30mm for the chuck or roughly 4" x 2" for the blank (add a fraction for sanding as your skill level requires ;)
WoodPops' video describes three tools he created for the project. Since I don't have these, I found myself using my parting tool and smallest detail gouge exclusively after roughing out there basic form with a 3/4 inch spindle gouge.

Sanding from 80 - 400 grit was fast and easy.
My finished top does not spin well but it does catch perfectly. This seems to be a function of the catch bowl rather than the top (it spins fine on the table). I believe the bottom of the catch bowl may not be curved (cupped) as shown on the plan. I look forward to correcting this error on my next attempt.
Fun little project made easy with the template and videos. Recommended!

Ok we have our first review in from Jerry. Here it is. "@Roger Dale Scott, Found some shop time, made 2 catch tops, first one walnut, cut the bell or skirt to short so had to glue on a piece of maple, to extend it down . So make a tower of walnut and maple. to match. Almost wore out the switch on the lathe, going back and forth checking with template and reviewing videos # 1 and 2. Top #2 made out of madrone, with a spalted maple tower. Went much faster as i was more familiar with the turning order, and did not have to consult the videos. Both tops weighed on my scales at 21 grams. Second top was spot on with the template.
My suggestions ,DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MAKE UNTIL YOU HAVE A TEMPLATE, its sooooo much easier than measuring all the time. Please subscribe to Rogers channel, lets get him his 1000 subs.Order the template and go to the shop and gather your materials, when you have the template, you will be ready to make some fun catch tops. I will be making more for my kids and grand kids as Christmas gifts.
Thanks Roger for making such a great product available."

Have been looking at this for a long time and now I've finally started my first attempt.
The Catch Top I made yesterday and it came out OK'ish although the outside is about 1mm undersize, all other dimensions are fine.
Other than that it looks good, spins nice and I will have a go at the base later today. Can't wait to test it!
I really like this idea, surprising that it didn't get more views. A lot of people may find this project challenging. Working to such specific dimensions is always harder than just free-handing. In fact that also was what kept me back for a while but when I made the Top yesterday, I found it easier than anticipated. So now with the more diffcult part already finished, I am really eager to finish the project.
If I ever manage to make a working version I will post a demo-vid with credits to the original creator.

@@rogerdalescott Sorry Roger, I don't have one. As often I'm making a trial-piece first to determine a project's feasibility and I always do that with the tools at hand.

If you are wondering what's up? I have a challenge taking place. Ten wood turners will get a free template for the catch top. They will use it to make a top within 10 day of receiving the template in the mail. They will come back here to the comments after making their catch top and give us their honest review of how it helps make a catch. That's it. No Catches. heeheeeheee My bad.
