God created Emmylou Harris to remind us that there is a beauty in life and in country music...with its observations at times Biblical...that the power of the people is born of the ordinary among us and not the elites...that Mother Maybelle had better qualities than George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, or any other political yayhoo who claimed to have the power of the people at heart as they gamed our nation in politics...as those assuming privilege scorned the masses whose sweat and toil in the mills, farms, and factories actually built and maintained this nation. Country music IS populism...it recognizes the struggles which make us strong...three chords and the truth...more honorable are the rabble of this nation than all the elites whom the historians would have us praise. OMG, does this song take me back! I believe the year was 1971 when Emmylou and I had our second date. The first date didn't go so well, because she wanted to see a movie, and I wanted to play my fav. game, bingo. It turn real ugly after a while, so this time I took her to the local VFW for trivia night. Well we won, but I was super upset. Emmylou answered all the questions, while I sat there like a bump on log. She didn't even give me a chance to help out. How humiliating. After the game, some hecklers got on me pretty bad I lost my temper and threw my carton of milk at the smallest heckler. He ducked and it hit the biggest heckler square in the nose. That's all I remember. I was told later by a nurse at the hospital, that witnesses claimed I was hit with a tire iron, then a sledge hammer, and almost with a chainsaw (it was out of gas) before they ran me over with their Harley's. I was told Emmylou pleaded with them to take me to a hospital. So one of them tied my feet to their bike and drug me two blocks to the local hospital. After that, Emmylou didn't want to date until I looked a little better. She claimed I was bad luck. She was most likely right. It took about 2 1/2 years for the lumps and bruises and cuts and broken bones to mend.

Emmylou just stands there and sings, no fireworks, no jumping around. Her voice is all she needs.
That wordless lament she adds at the end makes this the best version of an amazing song.
On ballads like this, EmmyLou's voice just seems to be floating along on a warm breeze.
