My deepest thanks for posting this. How wonderful to see Rostropovich with "his" National Symphony return to his homeland and be so warmly welcomed - and to hear the National Symphony in its golden age! BRAVO!!!!!!
Tears... What a blessing of a performance~
I think this is the best interpreted song because the conductor is the composer's friend and shared the same experiences as the composer
Bravo.
The best!!
Agreed! Awesome is the word. There have been many splendid perfomances and some here on TH-cam but this is a truly Russian interpretation of a truly Russian piece conducted by a fantastic Russian. Timpani, brass, strings all great.
You disrespectful string section, you! How DARE you not get out of the way during a trumpet solo. LOVED Rostropovich's tempo choices. At about 3:00 It was bold, made a statement and helped the listener to remember this is a program symph. I also really, really loved the way he kept the audience waiting at 7:11 The closing tempo brought TEARS to my eyes. You can clearly hear the screams of the people...even though the brass motive reminds me of "Jingle Bells." PERFECTION!!!
Love Rostrapovich conducting his own Russian composer Shostakovich's 5th symphony
thanks for the upload
@MrDanielBrisk That's the first time I've ever heard someone tell strings to get out of the way of brass.
@gaspymanful TH-cam didn't like my last comment. I guess it was too intelligently written, so I'll water it down now. I completely agree with you Gaspymanful. Tempos were PERFECT: particularly at 3' where the theme is deliberate! 07:11 Rostropovich makes the audience wait for it creating a moment of such tension. Closing tempo brought me to tears!!!
