Thank God for the internet? Which god? How come this piece has merely a few thousand views? Could it have anything to do with algorithms down ranking controversial topics based on some vague, yet still political, definition of news worthiness? To get Nader on your feed you usually have to directly search.

That he speaks at a conservative event - to a leftist like me - makes me hopeful that many of our problems are not created by the left/right divide. We can all agree that firms should compete on equal terms, that government should not be ripped off when they procure goods. Sadly, most democratic and republican representatives have sold their beliefs to the highest bidders.

In one interview Chomsky said he was a type of classical liberal in principle, namely against unaccountable tyrannies and basic human rights etc. and then went on to explain precisely why.
I think it would be great to have him speak there. I actually don't think it would take much to convince some of them.
Founders like Thomas Jefferson was both monarchy and monopolies. He was the first president to propose a progressive wealth tax based on land property because he did not want land monopolized and felt it was a way to encourage wealthy landowners to sell off their properties.

Direct Military expenditure is less than 3 percent of GDP, and yet the USA is a militarised economy similar to the former Soviet Union. The military-industrial-finance-googleplex, often seen as something from the past, now actually reigns supreme. It has gotten there by penetrating social media companies almost completely, and corporate “news” media completely. It reigns because it has finally gotten in our heads, so much that we hardly notice. Nader totally gets it. So much that he shouts, because we’re all half asleep, or checking messages.

First off, this is a BEAUTIFUL thing in that we have Ralph Nadar graciously being welcomed to speak at an event for a group named "The American Conservative" of all things. I mean seriously, how far have we fallen as a society that that fact is actually noteworthy? At any rate, yes, military spending in the U.S. has reached absolutely grotesque levels and it's yet another example of how private funding of political campaigns is just never going to work. All told, the U.S. spends more on its military each year than the next 7 to 8 countries combined and you want to know the real kicker: most of these countries are our allies!!!

Truman did not want the CIA to have that power.
Obviously Eisenhower was complicit and considered it strategic and once again oil was involved, but cost was actually very little Iran fell in four days and Guatemala was mainly a propaganda campaign.
Perhaps he saw the CIA as an inexpensive alternative to military action and afterwards regretted it not realizing how interlinked everything is.

There may be two sets of books kept that account differently for how the military budget is spent, one publicly accessible (in principle) but falsified, the other accurate but buried and hidden from all but a few. The insanely expensive claw hammers, toilet seats, aircraft components, and the like might be a way of paying for other things with no public accountability -- part of a deep black budget that no member of Congress ever gets to see.
If I'm ever fortunate enough to own a pre-1964 Corvair again (suitably modified for safety), it will proudly sport the Ralph Nader for President sticker I still have.

Mr. Nader as usual goes to extremes with this rhetoric. The world is a hostile place. Always has been. Always will be. This type of speech does not take into consideration the hundreds of years of history of hostile international relations. The fact of the matter is that nations need to be able to properly defend themselves. And in order to do that there must be well-trained, disciplined, committed military forces and excellent military hardware for troops to use. There can be no freedom unless there is military power.
Here are a few historical examples: In the Melian Dialogue (which took place around 416 BC during the Peloponnesian War 431 BC- 404 BC and which was written about by Thucydides at around 404 BC) the Athenian representatives made clear to the representatives of the island of Melos, their intentions to incorporate the island into their sphere of political control. The Melians were basically told that they did not have a choice. But the Melians resisted. Ultimately, the Athenians laid siege to Melos, executed the men, sold the women and children into slavery and brought the nation under their control. In another historical example: during the American Revolutionary War (also called the War of Independence) the British attempted to put down the rebellious American colonists because they refused to continue to live under British political and economic dominance. American colonists had no massive amounts of armaments nor did they have a truly professional military force. However, they received tremendous amounts of military assistance from the French, Spanish and the Dutch Netherlands. If not for this military assistance, there would be no United States of America. In yet another historical example: during and after World War Two (1939-1945) the Soviet Union (now the Russian Federation) rolled across Eastern Europe and seized control of the governments of Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) and East Germany. For so many years these people lived under what was called the Iron Curtain. And after so many uprisings, protests and fighting against Soviet domination, these people didn't taste true freedom until 1989. And it was largely military force that brought freedom to them. And now in 2022, with the threat of Russian military invasion of Ukraine, it is only military force that will suffice in countering that invasion... if it ever happens. And keep in mind, American military industrial might and military productive capacity, played a key role in the Allies ability to defeat the Nazis and Fascists during World War Two. Furthermore, Mr. Nader questions the patriotism of the so-called military industrial complex. He also insists that those of us who have joined the military had done so just to "save money or because we couldn't pay for college." That may be true for some, everyone's situation is different. But it is unfair and inaccurate to generalize. Finally, this nonsense about the "military industrial complex bringing down America" is not true. Sure, there is corruption in the system. Sure, there is cronyism all over the place. These negative human traits, these human imperfections, will always be there. Nonetheless, the United States of America must and will remain a military industrial power. And all of you folks who continue to revisit Eisenhower's famous speech would do well to remember that. May God Bless the United States of America.
