Jeez...I remember my Speech Arts teacher back in Whittier, CA, hometown of Nixon, in 1963, as a high school freshman, introducing the class to "Ralph Nader" that sexy young activist who wrote about "unsafe at any speed." Yeah! I was only 14. Ralph was 28 and on the cover of Time Magazine! He's still alive. I guess I am too still but after Kavanaugh's confirmation, I'm praying for an untimely demise. But, wow I have loved and admired Ralph Nader my WHOLE LIFE and he's still alive! HFS! God bless Ralph Nader! Now and ALWAYS!
Americans never elect an honest, smart person for President. That's why Ralph didn't have a chance. He is a smart man though and would've been a good President.
I think he did not stand a chance because he is an Arab, and he is for the US being an isolationist and withdrawing support for Israel. As great as I think Nader is, and I would vote for him under the right circumstance ... like against Donald Trump for example - he has no foreign policy platform and he shoots from the hip when asked about it. He is not serious about being President. He has been all about himself, and the proof to that is that everything he does is good for him only. I am not saying he has not done good things, but to great things he needs to partner with other people on the Left, and one thing the Left has never done has been to aggregate their brain power and work together. They are all lone wolves that talk a good talk, but do nothing.
Americans? We don't have votes that count anymore. Do you honestly think we all picked Biden over Bernie ? get real.. Sure they may finally count in the general , but by then it's too late because we've got two criminals running. EDIT: My bad. This is 3 years ago. +Green Genes Neither did you, you fuckhead. Love the way you blame Nader WHO WAS NOT PRESIDENT THEN, who was NOT IN POWER THEN, for the actions & choices of fucking Bush Sr.
Yes. Nader's work is incredible, if we really look at it. I don't think there has been any one individual that has done so much for the common American citizen than Nader. No president, no Senator or Representative has done as much. Can you think of anyone who has done as much as Nader?
Heroic, brilliant human being. Impressed upon me deeply, in my youth, the brutal political truths and impressed upon me that we could as a political force change the system’s corruption and social injustice. The system owes a huge debt to you.
I will have to second Chris' final statement on Part 1 "We all would have been MUCH BETTER OFF HAD WE VOTED FOR YOU IN 2000!" It's a regret and a personal shame that will follow many of us to the end of our lives. Down on my knees and bowing with all humility sir, thank you Mr. Ralph Nader, the number 1 most important PATRIOT and ROLE MODEL of our generation. Thank You!!
Sad to say I was still drinking the Kool-Aid. The Only vote I do not regret was Ross Perot. Everybody else yea I fucked that one up. Starting with Reagan. I was still in my Military Mind back then. I was Mad at Carter over the Hostage Crisis. If a Right wing idiot like me can wake up, Anybody can realize we have gone too far to the right and the Income inequality will be the end of us all. Just like 1930's Germany, 1917 Russia, Post WWII China. 1930's Italy with Oligarchy loving Mussolini. Now soon 21rst century United States.
Ralph Nader has been an American hero for over 50 years. Christopher Hedges has become one of the smartest spokesman for Injustice righteousness. And 90% of Americans don't even know who he is. This is not an accident they don't want you to know who he is.
I agree. He did more for the ordinary citizens in this country than anyone else in modern times. He's the last of the greats and with the corporate takeover of politics no one will ever come along again to represent the interests of the masses. The corporations have bought off the political system and are too powerful to overcome. Whatever they want, they get. Period.
Indeed, not everything should be for sale! We need millions of voices like Nader's. Great how he points out that it used to be that even Nixon had to answer to the voice of the people to some degree, whereas now it's just money that controls everything.

I hope you went with your gut, Kinky. I have taken steps to become an American citizen so that I can vote for Bernie in 2020, should I have the opportunity.
Mixed feelings about Nader. I'm a fan of much of what he did, there are some things he did however that cost many very dearly. I would love to have him answer a set of questions that no one will EVER ask him. C'est la vie I suppose. He, we clearly lost and have yet to even experiance the acceptance of that sentimate among the public. How do you stand up to a problem that the public has completely rejected because they have been brainwashed into thinking they are responsible for it so acknowledging it is admitting personal failure. This is the power of manufacturing consent thru a corrupt and biased media. When the nations hardships are depicted thru the media as a falsehood because of the premise that Americans are way to good and hard working of a people for these problems to be half as bad as "people say". It makes it so that if people admit these problems are real they then must also then by default be admitting to being personally responsible for these problems. That they are a result of deep personal flaws or the absence of strength of character within people which is just outrageous. That's the America we now live in though. When the people have been convinced anything that government can do to make their lives easier is evil socialism instead of simply the representation this country was originally formed over for not getting with their taxation back in England. Anyone else recall that old saying no taxation without representation? Yea that's the things you get in exchange for your outrageously high taxes. In case anyone out there is confused the answer is no foreign intervention and financial support, big banking and wall street bailouts, and outrageous no strings bailouts saving corporations whose executives overpaid themselves until their companies went bankrupt is not representation it's theft. And no anything the government does to make the lives of it's citizens better is not evil socialism. There needs to be a public campaign teaching Americans what socialism actually is!
some things are too important for 1 person, or a few to make the decisions for everything.... if the people are sold out - so are the principles of DEMOCRACY. m.
Why is it we're always looking back at greatness? We missed our chance! Nader, or anybody like him wouldn't stand a chance today because of progressive ideologies that conflict with adult and senior Generation X and tail end Baby Boomers. Most baby boomers have settled down into their lives, good or bad and Generation X is up to bat. Nader is old news. To them he got "funny"...' That certain follow-thru seriousness he once had is gone. He doesn't carry himself like he used to and all he seems to talk about are the past triumphs and fantasy "what if" scenarios.
Follow The Sun In addition to the progressive ideology problem, let me throw in crony capitalism, the military industrial complex, corporate welfare, the surveillance state, offshore tax havens, evisceration of unions and President game show host.
2 points: Nixon, not Ford, enacted wage and price freezes (Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3). Secondly, Ralph Nader made it possible for Bush (Cheney, actually) to be elected/appointed president. Nice work.
+chuck1prillaman _Ralph Nader made it possible for Bush (Cheney, actually) to be elected/appointed president_ I've heard a number of people state this and it's quite ludicrous given the complexity of the electoral process. See the interview of Nader by Abby Martin on Empire where he talks about this.
+Critical Thinking Gore was a supine spineless looser who conceded the election to Bush even before the count was finished. He deserved to loose - looser. Bernie is doing the same kissing Hillary's behind all the time. This is all THEATER for the sheeple..
topkhani I agree. Bernie appears to be more honest for the last 30 years than most politicians but let's face the reality that these politicians are window-dressing. The real power resides in people the masses never see. Time to pull back the curtains.
+Critical Thinking I was careful to say "possible". Before the election this was well known to be the case and Nader dismissed calls to ask supporters in Florida specifically to please vote Gore. President Bush....President Gore...what's the difference? Right? right? I'm kinda thinkin' a Gore administration would not have: (please fill in egregiously despicable and destructive Bush policies here). Nader ends the interview asserting that people should not vote strategically. Great idea. Until there is a perfect candidate who reflects your own views 100%, just abstain or perhaps write your own name in. I vote strategically when it matters. I'm funding, volunteering and voting for Bernie. I hope we can at least agree that Hillary would be a disaster and any of the Republicans would further decimate the Constitution, rights, economy and what little democracy we have left. Your favorites list is interesting and I'll be watching some of the videos. You might appreciate Gore Vidal, Noam Chomsky and Christopher Hitchens writings and videos if not already familiar.
I also see a left/right alliance happening soon. We are all screwed, & it is only a matter of time as things continue to get incrementally worse, as they have been for decades. I look back on pictures of myself & my brother in the 80’s & I get a hard twinge of nostalgia, because it was back when we had the greatest middle class in world history. Can you imagine? Now, the middle class can’t afford a $400 emergency. Think of it. The most amazing middle class ever. Now it lay in ruins, & people are too overworked or sick to care.
+mickey rat (maqnchs) so what----apparently if he does imbibe it has not affected him at all. is there a point to your comment? Haters are going to hate....................
+mickey rat (maqnchs) "Nader's been hitting the bottle, look at that nose." No, he's 81 years old, that's why he looks like that. He's been around so long, he first became famous in 1965 with his book "Unsafe at Any Speed." That was 50 years ago, and he was 31 at the time! Let's see what you look like when you're 81.
Good lord. I like Chris Hedges but his dishonesty of Bernie Sanders here is fucking ridiculous. Funding for the NSA? Bernie voted against the Patriot Act and voted against other bills that violates our privacy and civil liberties. And on trade, even before he ran for President, Bernie Sanders was always a HUGE critic of NAFTA, CAFTA, and the TPP and voted against them all.

Ralph Nader's "ideology"? Just fair play! 👍
And he really knows his subject...
2022?
Nader means 1996 for all that Clinton stuff, not 1986. Hedges should have pointed that out (I'm watching now, maybe he does later?).
I Remeber about the Carter situation
that is why it is best to work at the state level.

Excellent timeline of events back to Nixon.
Very honorable man would been very good Presidente. Very good
some things are too important for 1 person, or a few to make the decisions for everything....
if the people are sold out - so are the principles of DEMOCRACY.
m.
Until todays supreme court
Democracy? Really gentlemen? Mob Rule is your aspiration?
How about Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness instead?
Truth has no expiry date.
More blues please.
Already during the 70s 😶
Nadar is incorrect. It's not a left -right alliance. It's a working class alliance.
+Ronny Ron
Left and right are relative terms, they're basically invented terms. There are a lot more people with common values than we think.
Not very many people in this country know the history these guys are talking about.
Remember what else happened in 71?
Why is it we're always looking back at greatness? We missed our chance! Nader, or anybody like him wouldn't stand a chance today because of progressive ideologies that conflict with adult and senior Generation X and tail end Baby Boomers. Most baby boomers have settled down into their lives, good or bad and Generation X is up to bat. Nader is old news. To them he got "funny"...' That certain follow-thru seriousness he once had is gone. He doesn't carry himself like he used to and all he seems to talk about are the past triumphs and fantasy "what if" scenarios.
Follow The Sun
In addition to the progressive ideology problem, let me throw in crony capitalism, the military industrial complex, corporate welfare, the surveillance state, offshore tax havens, evisceration of unions and President game show host.
He's in his mid 80 s. Most people who live that long don't carry themselves as well as they used to,or speak as well.
We watch the Whales to this day!
Nixon started wage and price controls by spring 1972 Ralph. And did his one trick pony with the Petro Dollar.
+Critical Thinking
Gore was a supine spineless looser who conceded the election to Bush even before the count was finished.
He deserved to loose - looser. Bernie is doing the same kissing Hillary's behind all the time. This is all THEATER for the sheeple..

I agree. Bernie appears to be more honest for the last 30 years than most politicians but let's face the reality that these politicians are window-dressing. The real power resides in people the masses never see. Time to pull back the curtains.
And that "curtain" can not be pulled because of Republicans..
and "more honest" Bernie will do nothing - that is just another Obama term...
Red nose means alcohol, I wonder
Nader is 82 years old and a vegetarian. I doubt he drinks much alcohol.
Had a stroke and has some health problems. He is not an alcoholic.
Vote for the Socialist Party are you will be voting for FASCISM again !
Nader's been hitting the bottle, look at that nose. He's got the Gin blossom.
