Apart from the obvious application of the medium used, the vital details explained, are of equal importance. I have been painting in every medium for 50 years, but this really makes me want to love pastels again. Brilliant!

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have a pad of Pastelmat paper (#5 set) that I have been too afraid to use (waste- I'm still learning). I also have a set of 120 Rembrandt half stick soft pastels I've barely used. I really appreciate that you painted an apple. This might sound weird but my husband is having triple bypass surgery in March and I've decided to attempt painting an anatomically correct human heart against a soft background that has a suggestion of an EKG readout faintly behind the subject. The Pastelmat pad I have has a dark blue sheet so I'm going to use it, I think, and substitute blues, pinks, and purples for most of the greens and yellow greens you used as highlights on the red apple. Of course, most of the heart and its vessels will be reds and blues, but the lighter highlights are remarkably similar to how I picture the front of a heart. I'm thinking the background will be hazy blues and greys with the EKG sketched in very lighly. I really haven't found a useful heart painting demo on TH-cam that has all of the art elements I'm imagining. Your apple gives me a good idea of the kinds of contours, highlights, and shadows I might try, and using pastels on Pastelmat paper looks like something I might actually be able to pull off (if I can get the sketch right before I start.) I've worked some with various pastels (soft and oil pastels, and sticks like Nu-pastels), but this will be the first pastel piece I've tried that really has to be good. Most of my artwork has been watercolor and Inktense pencil with colored pencil over it, mostly seascapes. Anyway, thank you for the great lesson! Wish me luck.

I manage to do my first pastel drawing last week thanks to your tutorial... That was amazing. I was afraid of the result because I didn't have the same paper, mine was so "grainy", but it turned out ok, even though different. Thank you very much for your time and dedication.
I'm gonna post it on my blog, and you'll be credited. (link to video). But I'm not sure this is proper to post the link here. So let me know if you wish to see.

I’m going to be helping with an art camp for 10-14 year olds. When I was a child taking private lessons , I remember using charcoal for drawing and shading, and when that was mastered we could advance to soft pastels for color. Then we could advance to oils. What do you feel is the best way to teach this age group? Pastels or colored pencils to learn about color?

I have a question, I just bought some nice pastels and worked on my first pastel drawing. However, I couldn’t get the colors to cover the other colors the way you did. Such as the yellow and blue. It just turned to green even though I thought I was careful about it. Then I tried using the colored pencils over for details and they wouldn’t lay down at all like the way you used yours in the foreground. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you so much for the tutorial! Very beautiful work!
