    I show you most of the features of the PMA450B audio panel and how to use them in flight as we rock out over Southern California. The PS Engineering PMA450B is in my opinion the most advanced audio panel on the market for GA aircraft.

      Haha thanks. 2 BT is amazing. ANd one further detail - you can actually listen to BOTH streams in one headset station ...as an example the pilot can choose BT1 and BT2 and have Foreflight on an iPad feeding alerts over BT and one of the passenger's phone being the DJ on the other BT. Kind of amazing.

    I first installed a PS engineering product in 1994 and having done six different installations over the years with differing audio requirements and PS engineering have had a solution that works superbly. The PMA450B looks good and I could just slide it in to replace my 8000BT……….but is it good enough to warrant replacing and audio panel that I am totally happy with ?……………. Now that is a first world problem.

    • @SoCalFlyingMonkey
      @SoCalFlyingMonkey  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use Flightlink. Just make sure before you share the recording you disable iPad to sleep and also back up iPad. It’s a bug that erases entire recordings if the iPad so much as thinks about sleeping while it’s converting the file. You don’t want to find out the hard way after filming an entire autopilot review. TRUST ME. Haha

    As always awesome content! Just want to ask, do you think that too much stuff in the cockpit may become a distraction? Or in moments of heavier workloads is easy to focus? Not a critic in any way, love your content and fly style

    • @SoCalFlyingMonkey
      @SoCalFlyingMonkey  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is a very valid point and something I think about often. Short answer is yes too much can be distracting. I often find myself thinking about the simplicity of the steam gauges that tell you exactly just what you need to know. Very efficient. My panel has a lot going on and it takes some discipline to know what to look at when and when to ignore a lot of info and features. As far as the audio panel, you dont really need to do much with it once you have it setup- in fact you dont have to interact with it at all unless you want to monitor a second comm and then its just one button push. The rest of the tools are just bonus so you can work them in when you want. But it is best to become proficient with it on the ground and at a high altitude on a clear day with the autopilot on. If I am in a busy workload phase and I don't know exactly what my button presses will do I tend to not fish for solutions and just stay using basic functions.

      The PMA450B is Plug N Play with all models of our PMA8000 series. Get all of the functionality without any wiring changes. If you want to implement the flightmate function, (built in audio alerts triggered by discrete inputs) an avionics shop would have to perform that new wiring.

    Educational as it is entertaining, your video production quality and combination of fun flights and informative flights are going to make you one of the heavy hitters of YT Aviation channels, I'm sure of it. Incidentally: As the PIC, is it okay to listen to music? I've always wondered, I'll be starting my private pilot's training next summer as part of my mid-life crisis solution.
    Edit - guess I should have finished the video - so you can set your comm panel to cut out the music when radio traffic comes in?

    • @SoCalFlyingMonkey
      @SoCalFlyingMonkey  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some people think you shouldnt listen to music. However, when you are at 10,500 feet and talking to Center there is really not a lot going on besides watching the engine info, thinking ahead for the next action, and spotting emergency landing spots continuously. I find listening to music doesnt prevent from from doing anything I'm supposed to be doing during this time. I wouldnt really listen to something on an instrument approach but that's just me. The good thing is, my passengers can listen to something and I dont have to, or we can listen to the same thing at different volumes. :)

    • @alaskafender
      @alaskafender 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SoCalFlyingMonkey That makes sense to me! It's a bit of a relief, to be honest, as I listen to music while doing most mind intensive tasks, and even better to know that my family could listen to their own tunes along the way. I want to fly so I can do the same thing your doing, except up here in Alaska. Your channel has been great, as few other content creators have a focus including their families. Looking forward to seeing more!

    Great work again Eric! I own a PSE 450A, which has only 1 BT connection. I use this one for my phone. I'm still not clear on how to configure multiple music inputs for my passengers. Are the other non-BT music connections your family was using hardwired into the back of the 450? Are these unswitched inputs?

    • @SoCalFlyingMonkey
      @SoCalFlyingMonkey  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From the installation manual. - "The PMA450B has four available music inputs. Music input number 1 is J2 pins 23 (left channel) and 24
      (right channel), with respect to pin 25, and Music number 2 is connected to 26 (left channel), 27 (right channel), with respect to 28, plus Bluetooth® modules to stream music from a paired device. " They are dedicated music inputs and different than the unswitched inputs and switched inputs from my understanding. So 2 hard wired music inputs, 2 bluetooth music inputs, 4 unswitched inputs (like callouts from your EFIS or GPS), 2 com, 2 nav, and 2 additional switched inputs (DME, etc). Hope that helps. Here is a link to the installation manual if you enjoy that sort of thing. :) www.ps-engineering.com/docs/PMA450B_IM.pdf

    About the question on 04:54 - The audio spacing is done basically by delaying the sound to one ear by a few milliseconds. This delay is what makes your brain think the audio is coming from a position It's how we can hear audio directionality.

She normally doesn't act in anything besides school theater but we submitted for the project together and shot that commercial by ourselves at home with the agency and client on Zoom. It was fun to do together as a family and was nice to have at least one day of work the last 3 months since film/commercial production has been almost 100% shut down. Thanks for pointing that out. I have replaced the eyebolts and clevis pins and adjusted the strike plate to get it to seal as tight as I can. It is much better than it used to be but it still looks from the outside like it's open. It is an old high time airframe and that may be the best I'm going to get the door without some major rework. It does latch in all places and is almost totally sealed with the door seal. There is a little bit of light you can see in one part from the inside but it is really minimal.

    Do you have some closeup pictures of the overhead mount on how you attached your Stratus box to the headliner? I want to get it set up like that in my Cherokee.
    When I placed it behind my radio stack in the panel it did not get enough cooling, and I’m tired of carrying it around and having the suction cup fall off the window after reaching cruising altitude.

    Do you keep your plane in the club seating, all the seats facing forward, or remove the middle row? Also, could you do a video on different configurations? For example how many people you can fit in with full fuel, or having 6 adults how much fuel and range do you have. I have 3 kids and I think a 6 would make a good plane for the 5 o us.

    • @SoCalFlyingMonkey
      @SoCalFlyingMonkey  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The plane only has forward facing seats. You cannot just switch to club seating. Some of the model years offered both (you have to look at the type certificate data sheet for that model year) and in those models it is legal to switch to club seating but it's not something you can go back and forth on. I opted for a plane with forward seating for a couple reasons- 1) passengers are more comfortable in my opinion facing forward (usually anyone in the middle row is a newbie). 2) With club seating and the way the 2 seat backs lean against each other between pilot row and middle row, you lose some space in that triangle, especially if the pilot or copilot has pulled their seats forward. In the forward facing config, when the pilot row moves forward you gain some legroom in the middle row. The seats (middle and back) come out very easily. Just a few seconds each. We usually fly with the middle row out for extra legroom. If we are taking bikes we pull the back row and can fit FOUR bikes with wheels off. Its incredible. I had my A&P sign off weight and balance sheets for every imaginable seat configuration. So we can fly with just 1 rear seat, 1 rear and 1 middle (skiing), etc etc you get the idea. The 6 is probably a great plane for you all. Mine has empty weight of around 2000 pounds and useful of 1400 pounds ....so with full 84 gallons of gas @ 6 pounds per gallon = 500 pounds of fuel and that leaves 900 pounds for people and bags. Quite a bit. And you can always just fill to tabs and save a hundred pounds at the expense of range but I mean with full fuel its 800-900 miles which we usually dont need. Its a great all around plane.

But with this PMA450 audio panel, is a separate intercom required? If not, then how do you adjust the squelch for each passenger/pilot/copilot? I don't see a squelch knob on it?

    Greetings from Australia! When your phone is paired for making or receiving calls with the audio panel can you record a video on your phone and pick up ATC audio? do you need to change any settings like BT1 or BT2?

    • @SoCalFlyingMonkey
      @SoCalFlyingMonkey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In order to receive the audio on your phone it must be paired with the Streamer function of the audio panel. I usually pair my iPad mini to the Streamer bluetooth connection, which uses one of the two available bluetooth connections on the audio panel. I do not believe it is possible to pair one device with both the BT1 input of the audio panel as well as the Streamer BT2 function of the audio panel, but this is more likely to be a limitation of the phone rather than the audio panel. I dont think the phone can pair with 2 different bluetooth connections at the same time. The people at PS Engineering would know for sure though. My recommendation would be that if you want to pair a phone for phone calls and music but also record the audio from the panel, then you could have an old iphone dedicated to be the recording device paired with the BT2 Streamer function.

    • @SoCalFlyingMonkey
      @SoCalFlyingMonkey  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is SO loud inside the airplane- I am surprised intercoms sound as good as they do. I mean if you have ever recorded sound with even professional microphones in a noisy environment and tried to filter it you will quickly discover how hard it is to eliminate all noise when the environment is that loud. I mean it is really really really loud in a PA32 with 300 horsepower. And I usually have the vents open and blowing. In the airplane in real life it sounds very good, especially with Bose A20 noise cancelling headsets. But at home on a computer you really will notice what is left of the b.g. noise.

      @@SoCalFlyingMonkey Thanks for the reply. I've trained in a Cessna 150 with an ANCIENT radio and the squelch was almost innefective. It was difficult to understand my instructor over the static on the headset, not to mention the background noise. I've also trained in a Cessna 175 with a better sound panel, but it still has static that I can't get rid of.
      I also hear that static on all TH-cam videos where the audio is recorded through the sound panel.
      Maybe it's a function of the radios (or the frequencies) themselves.
      Your Bose A20 headset and high end sound panel would be an ideal setup, and maybe it sounds better in person than the recording indicates. Or maybe I'm just lucky to be hypersensitive to static. :/
