One of the best aviation videos I've seen on TH-cam and trust me... I spend a lot of time on here haha. Really well done and super informative and GREAT close ups of the HDX. Seems like a really cool system. I am so used to G1000 that I am scared to try anything else out there but this seems like a system that's easy to use and pretty clear. I just really don't like the low frame rate of the runway passing by in the synthetic vision.
Thanks for the comment! I hadn’t really noticed the runway frame rate until someone else also commented about it. I don’t disagree but I can say that by the time the runway is that big in frame i am for sure not looking at the screen anymore. :)
Had my Skyview HDX installed in my 1967 C182 last year. Currently having the AP installed. I’ve learned more from this video than anything else I watched. The real time in actual flight demo is excellent. That’s one more thing Dynon could improve upon. Thanks
Looking into upgrading my airplane to the Dynon Skyview HDX. This is one of the best videos I’ve seen. You answered a lot of questions I had. Retiring off flying the B 787 Dreamliner, I see a lot of familiarity. Very professional and thorough. Thanks
I'll just echo what others have already said...amazing review because of the detail you went in to and actually demonstrating the features and capabilities. Thanks so much for doing the video. Awesome!!!
This was an incredible video. Just updated from two classic Dynon panels to the HDX and the screen resolution and brightness was worth the upgrade. Also using the Avidyne for IFR work and it works with Dynon systems just as seamlessly as you portray. Thanks again.
This has been one of the best tutorial videos I've found for the Dynon system. I have nearly the exact same setup. I have a dual screen HDX, IFD540 and an SL30. The blue arc showing where you are project to cross a fix was new to me. Thanks for showing it in the video.

Excellent video! Love the level of detail you provide while using the HDX and Avidyne. I have the HDX and IFD440 in my Long-EZ and preparing to do my first IFR in the plane, but still working to make sure I've mastered both before doing so. Thank you for doing these and keep up the great work!
Awesome!! I currently rent a C172S with the G1000/GFC700 for my Commercial training. I learned to fly on the old steam gauges in Cessna and Piper aircraft in the 90’s...what we have available now just blows my mind! I had the best and worst IFR Checkride ever when I experienced two equipment failures during the test (NavCom and DG), we continued on based on my choice and I still passed the ride. If I was flying one of these TAA birds, very very small chance that would’ve ever happened. I love how much capability these systems have. I regularly fly IFR with the G1000 and it’s a dream, so easy to manage and a wealth of information and situational awareness. Only downside for the newer pilots...make sure you still get some experience on the old analog instruments because it is a skill that can save you on a bad day. Don’t get over reliant on the tech where you lose the basic skills. Awesome video!!
So glad I found this video, I've been going back and forth about this system and I think with your detailed presentation, you kinda just sealed the deal for me
@@steveb5249 Yes. You can use the 530W as the external GPS source. Double check with your installer if there would be any drawbacks but I think it would provide the flight plan to the HDX just like my 540.

Insane amount of info. The value is clear. The amount of time spent head down however is a little scary but I guess with ADS-B mandate and flight following you have some safeguards
Awesome review! Leaning toward the HDX for the RV8 build. Have the skyview touch in the Kitfox and really liking it. Hold the Baro knob in for a few seconds and it’ll autofill nearest Baro setting. -Blue Skies!
always love watching your videos. I wish I saw your video before I did my avionics upgrade as the Dynon looks amazing. I was driving by your hangar and saw you filming this week. Can't wait to see the next video

SoCal Flying Monkey I can’t wait to see it. I’ll be at the hangars tomorrow to start on the install of my new interior and finally the new avionics are installed :)
What an excellent video showing the capabilities of the Dynon Skyview HDX. I'm was about to learn and fly a Garmin G3X out of KFUL (Fullerton Airport in Southern California) but now I'm looking at the Dynon glass. I recently flew with a friend out of KLGB in his Ranger LSA which has a Dynon Skyview HDX system. Thank you for a great video!
@@SoCalFlyingMonkey A long time friend of mine had a hanger there at KWHP for many years. He had a C-170 and a motor home in his hanger. I worked for Flightsafety in Long Beach for 3 years as a Citation instructor and flew SIC in their simulators for clients. Another SIC I worked with, has a G1000 C-172 bases at KWHP. Once in awhile she flies it down to KLGB to report for work!
As a long-time aircraft mechanic, and having worked on aircraft with both glass and steam gauges, the digital dash IS NOT more reliable. However, I do aim to digitize my own plane in order to further modernize it and create a more user-friendly and aesthetically pleasing cockpit.
Hello - very good review, and I really enjoy your content! We are in the process of refitting a Cherokee with the HDX System. One correction - at 2:06, in relation to the need for the EFIS-D10A, there is a graphic that states “or another 10” or 7” display”. From our conversations with Dynon, this is not correct. A system may have up to three 7” or 10” panels (in any combination), but the current STC requires use of a D10A for instrument backup. This is to ensure system’s independence incase of an electrical and/or communication bus malfunction. The folks at Dynon are very helpful and responsive to all of the questions we’ve had so far!
@@SoCalFlyingMonkey Very cool man, looking forward to more videos! BTW - we decided to wait on a TBD "future" STD'd PA-28 autopilot. Finger's crossed that happens in the next year or so. Keep up the great work!
Fantastic video, man- thanks for the review! I’ve spent a fair amount of time researching the Dynon Skyview, but hadn’t seen it in action. I’ve come to the same conclusion as you, that the Dynon is the greatest value proposition of those 3. Great job, I’ll be watching more videos!
Thanks for the feedback! I'm really glad the video was useful to you- when I was looking in to it I had a hard time envisioning exactly what it would be like to fly with one so I decided to try to remedy that by making the video after I had it installed.
@@SoCalFlyingMonkey I love the IFD540. I did a 10 day IFR training and the whole time it was turbulent weather. I would never get a touch-only screen. Like you, the STC for the AP isn't ready yet. But I have a Stec 50 and I'll use that until the Dynon AP is ready.
@@jbuchanan6726 Looking at the HDX manual and watching the Dynon training for the autopilot, if I can afford to install the DYnon AP when (If) it is available for my plane I may do that. The integration with the HDX looks great and it has some very nice features. That's not to say that my Trutrak isnt dead on and super easy to use, but its a few more button presses every now and then. :)
@@SoCalFlyingMonkey My installer is going to wire for the AP. And the 182 is on the list to be certified by the end of the year. So with any luck, I'll have the Dynon AP by the end of the year.
Great Review! thanks for this I am seriously considering this upgrade in place of the two Garmin G5's. Well done! Cant wait to see additional videos to come.
I think it would be a big step up from the G5s. There are even more features and cool subtleties that I wasn't able to cover in this video. I think you would enjoy the TFT screen of the HDX compared to the LCD of the G5s as well.
Wonderful review and the best explanation of the capabilities of the system that I have seen. I am anxiously waiting for the autopilot to be approved the the Mooney so I can jump in. One minor thing I noticed in the video is a couple times you seem to say that with an additional Skyview screen you can do away with the D-10A. At least according to the FAQ on Dynon Certified website the D-10A is required no matter how many screens you install. If that has changed I would love to know about it. Overall.... fantastic video.
I think you may be right about the D10A. I will research it and make a note of that in the video description. Thanks for pointing it out. I hope to see more models approved for the autopilot. Looking at the pilot guide, the autopilot integration seems amazing.
Very nice video of yours. One thing that I couldn't pass unoticed is this PFD appears quite a mirror-like, very reflective, otherwise seems really nice modern avionics. Keep up the nice videos. Thanks!
It's not really noticeable in person but photographs that way. The deep focus of small sensor cameras like GoPros make it appear much worse than by eye.
Loved your video. I love the new glass coming on the certified market and am a big believer in building proficiency with the features in these new avionics and videos like this help. Thanks for making this.
Love your Videos, saw a connection on my FB , and checked it out...very interesting, very informative, will def spread the word.Actually one of the best ive seen.

What you have done is exactly what I am trying to do right now! Incredible videos. I would love to know, after what you now have experienced, what you would do different.
That's a great question....I am pretty happy with how things turned out. I would advise to really shop around and find the right fit for avionics shop. I am really glad I made the trip to Florida to get the work done by Saint Aviation. They did a nice job for sure at a great price. I do wish Dynon had their AP certified for my airplane model. Maybe one day they will make it happen... I still like the Trutrak but the Dynon AP would be nice!
Wow! I never really thought of Dynon before. Beautiful and capable display! It looks like IAs can install this so that would be cheaper that $120/hr shop rate. You just sold me on this!!
Gad the video is helpful to you. I have really been enjoying the HDX. I have found it to be an incredible value. So many features and a long track record of a product that works very well. I would definitely consider it if you are upgrading your panel.
I would love to upgrade my steam gauges I just can’t justify the insane purchase prices and high cost of installing glass panels. That extra money would go a long way towards actually flying

That is a good tip for sure.
Insane amount of info. The value is clear. The amount of time spent head down however is a little scary but I guess with ADS-B mandate and flight following you have some safeguards
I make an effort to keep my eyes out the window. And realizing ADSB won't show you everything helps...
Great video and super helpful as I start to plan upgrading the avionics in my 182
Glad I could help
Awesome review! Leaning toward the HDX for the RV8 build. Have the skyview touch in the Kitfox and really liking it. Hold the Baro knob in for a few seconds and it’ll autofill nearest Baro setting. -Blue Skies!
This is exactly what I needed to see. Looking to have this installed in my Arrow very soon.
Glad it was helpful!
Dynon for my experimental is perfect.
Wow! What a great review you did on your panel upgrade. And the video quality is excellent. Thanks for bringing us along.
Thanks for watching!
Well done video, very informative...subscribed! looking forward to more.
Awesome, thank you! More on the way soon!
always love watching your videos. I wish I saw your video before I did my avionics upgrade as the Dynon looks amazing. I was driving by your hangar and saw you filming this week. Can't wait to see the next video
oh yeah I am going a little crazy over here being unemployed right now because of the virus and am making excuses to stay creative and film stuff! haha. the next one is gonna be FUN
Glad you found it useful. I love the HDX. Still super happy with it after 2 years
@@SoCalFlyingMonkey A long time friend of mine had a hanger there at KWHP for many years.
However, I do aim to digitize my own plane in order to further modernize it and create a more user-friendly and aesthetically pleasing cockpit.
good to know from the mechanic perspective.
I really appreciate your review of the Dynon system. I am looking at this exact system for my Zenith CH750SD build. The tutorial was even better!
Glad I could help
GRANDE!!!! ora mi hai convinto ad installarlo sul mio pioneer 300
Yes you’re right about that. I’ll update the description. There’s no way to edit the video or replace it.
@@SoCalFlyingMonkey Very cool man, looking forward to more videos! BTW - we decided to wait on a TBD "future" STD'd PA-28 autopilot. Finger's crossed that happens in the next year or so. Keep up the great work!
Thank goodness there is now a D30!
I'm really glad the video was useful to you- when I was looking in to it I had a hard time envisioning exactly what it would be like to fly with one so I decided to try to remedy that by making the video after I had it installed.
this is the type of content that we want!! thank you for made an amazing video review
Glad you liked it! Thanks for the encouragement.
Great review. I'm having mine installed in 6 weeks and can't wait. I have a C182 with Avidyne IFD540.
very exciting. you will love it, especially if you like the IFD540!
@@jbuchanan6726 nice!!! Let me know how you like the HDX and eventually the autopilot!
That panel seems like an amazing piece of kit.
It's really great. So many features!
Excellent, in-depth review. Two thumbs up!
Glad you liked it!
Looks great and love the review. In the process of getting a quote on 2 10 inch displays in my 182...
nice!! I still love the HDX after 2 years with it.
Sweet. Nice review and good tutorial too. I work within walking distance from Whiteman.
Right on. I would be tempted to leave work and fly all the time! haha
Great video. Informative and not a lot of “me” content.
Amazing video 👍👍thanks for sharing. Looking at glass for my Bo soon. This has helped greatly!
hope the upgrade is fun!
Really good overview of real world use.
Thanks! Glad you found it useful.
ATC at the end has a great voice :)
Glad you enjoyed it and found it useful!
Very well done instructional video. NICE APPROACH.
Thank you. :)
Cheers from Leading Edge Avionics, hope to see you around!
Great Review! Just Became a subbie. Look forward for your vids!
Thanks for the sub!
Love your Videos, saw a connection on my FB , and checked it out...very interesting, very informative, will def spread the word.Actually one of the best ive seen.
Awesome, thank you!
Beautiful plane and great technology. Love flat panels.
Best review ever. By far
Thank you!
Great review. Thank you!😀
Great video. I was going to go with the GARMIN but decided to give the Dynon a closer look after seeing this.
1 year flying with the HDX and I still LOVE it.
Awesome walk through!
Glad you enjoyed it
Appreciate the walkthrough. I'm looking into buying a 1/10th share of RV-12 and it has a Skyview. This video was incredibly helpful!!
Glad it was helpful!
Wow! So glad I stumbled upon your channel! Excellent, Excellent video. I had already been talking with Jesse about installing the HDX in my Bonanza. You confirmed everything I had been thinking about cost/value and gave a really well done overview of the Skyview system. Can't wait to fly behind it. Subscribed!
He will do a great job for you and you will really enjoy the HDX.
@@SoCalFlyingMonkey I'm glad you're pleased. He seems like a great guy. I'm no camera professional, but I've got a little youtube channel too. I document some Bonanza stuff, and I'm also restoring a Taylorcraft. Check it out when you get a chance.
planning to update my 1974 Mooney F model Almost pulled the trigger on Aspen but the Dynon has a lot that I like. AP only issue.... BIG screen is important for the OLD Guys... 63 and working on my IFR. After the Check ride the Dynon is going in. Thank you ....Great overview.
I'm picking up my Bonanza V35B with dual HDX displays this week. This was a great review, SFM
Thank you! Hope you enjoy your V Tail Bonanza. Those are awesome airplanes!! You'll love the HDX.
Great 👍 video. I’m using the non certified Dynon products and want to install in our C206. Appreciate the video
Thanks for watching!
SoCal Flying Monkey keep them coming 😎
Awesome review! If I didn't just buy my Lance, this would be where I would put my $$$$.
At least now you have another airplane thing to spend money on! (As if it ever stops) Hahaha.
Thanks for the education. You would make a great instructor. Really enjoyed this as I am a vicarious pilot (always wanted to fly- to dam old now , finally I can afford it).
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
I believe Modern Glass avionics are the future.
I am flying in MSFS 2020 VR and i have to say the Steamgauges are quicker for me to read on a glance with the lower resolution in a VR headset.
yes in a way they are a quicker read. But I do like the reliability of the glass panel
That's a sweet panel.
Absolutely safer with all glass vs mechanical.
I can’t believe how much ADSB has made us all safer. Less stress in congested areas.
definitely less stressful in those times
Great job, man! Enjoyed your video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
