One o f the best voices in the business. His voice fit old western sound tracks perfectly. I think we've seen the best. There will not be any singers of this rank any more.
He did the initial recording in 1950 - he did an entire album which my parents had and I always enjoyed. The original recording is even better because there's not all that back-ground effects in this version, and it's just his tremendous voice which was so outstanding!
His voice is really awesome and excellent. Hello 👋how is the pandemic going over there? I'm delighted to meet you here. Where originally are you watching from? I'm Patrick from NY USA
In 1957 we returned to England. My grandfather sang the song, he was a Frankie Laine fan and said he saw him sing it on British television. British tv at that time was full of musical shows. My grandfather sounded just like him. Having never heard the song before, it was amazing.
I always loved you Frankie. You made my life better. I would close my eyes and pretend I was singing along with you. You were one who came, you saw, and made things a little better. RIP my friend. I'll be seeing you soon.
that last note, is still amazing for an 85 year old, and can still hit, at least a ringing g4! or was it higher. he was never any less, then a really good singer.
He wasn't the singer in the movie . He said back then, you had to be invited to do a song. He wasn't "invited". So he did it anyway, when he was 85. A very great man.
i was born in 54, and frankie laine was my most favourite singer by the time i was 5 years old, and i collected loads of records and memorabilia, this was all destroyed by a fire in the 70s, and could never be replaced, but to hear him singing again in the background while working in my house, this brings back so many memories i cant explain to you, he is one of the greatest singers of all time, thank you markalson1938 for this posting and many others, kindest regards to you and yours,,,paddy,
This song was made for Frankie Laine, I would have thought he recorded it much earlier, thanks for posting. This was one of the 1st songs I ever learned how to play on guitar back in the day.
When Frankie Laine was doing much of his recording, a record company had to "invite" , or" ask" you to record a song that one of their "people" had already recorded. Frankie gave this answer when asked why he didn't do such and such earlier. A different singer, Tex Ritter I think, was the singer in High Noon, the excellent Western from years ago. Frankie was asked to record the same song a bit later, and his got higher on the charts than did Tex's version. This info is found in several places on the net.
Wonderful rendition, and great Frankie! Remember "scaring" myself when I was really little with a 78rpm record of "Ghost Riders in The Sky!" Thanks for posting!
Wonderful is what I'll say about that Version of Maria. Mr Laine does a Fantastic job of it I'll definitely Say that. As for Harvey Presnel's outstanding Rendition in Paint Your Wagon. Harvey had a Voice that was Cultured on the Stage & Opera Stage. So His Voice was a Very Trained one. Where as Frankie Laine's is as if He's a Lonesome Cowboy, Singing to The Stars while on Night Hawk duty by the Campfire 🔥🔥. Absolutely both are Great Version's of that Tune. Thank You for Sharing it.
Oh yeah I love everything about this song. Hello 👋how is the pandemic going over there ?I'm delighted to meet you here. Where originally are you watching from? I'm Patrick from NY USA

No there will never be another singer like Frankie or for that matter like any of the great singers of the past. Not that the youth to day couldn't develope a great voice but the time have changed style today isn't on the voice as it is on noice and special effects.
The man still had more air than most people at 85. He was great. I read that his dad was a barber that cut Capone's hair. Don't know if this is true or not. My deceased( now) parents loved to listen to him sing. Me too.
anything you post on frankie laine or marty robbins or the other great western singers is appreciated. love them all! especially marty robbins. thanks for sharing
I have his "Command" album in frount of me now. There is no recording of "Maria" on it. As I've stated many of times, Frankie never recorded this song till the "Wheels" CD. I've had people tell me it was on almost every album Frankie made in the 50's or 60's. IT'S NOT THERE.
Frankie couldn't hit the high notes as he used too but the voice was still there while I was building a web site on Frankie's work , I talked to him on the telephone several times. Once I asked him why he hadn't recorded this song when he was younger. He replied "No one offered it to me" This was back when the A&R men at the record companies controlled what the singers recorded.
Yes, Frankie was 85 when he recorded this song. He still had it but couldn't hit the high notes like he used too. I asked him once why he hadn't recorded this song when he was younger. He said that no one offered it to him. Back then the A&R man at the record companies picked the songs the artiest would record. In the late 60's after the movie came out is when most singers recorded this song and Frankie was with ABC who didn't like this type of songs.
Frankie said decades ago, you had to be invited to do a song. He was never invited, to do this one. He was 85 when he recorded this. Another Believe it or not : His dad was Al Capone's barber. Got killed in the barber shop, as someone was trying to get Capone. I remember watching him on TV when I was growing up. Kids didn't usually listen to Frankie Laine that much. I also listened to Vaughn Monroe as a kid. My parents got to dance to his band occasionally.
That's really pretty. How are you doing and how is the pandemic going over there? I'm delighted to meet you here. Where originally are you watching from? I'm Patrick from NY USA
Yes, Frankie invested in a Rambler Dealership in Downey Ca in the Mid 60's, He lost money on the deal, I went out there, as I was stationed in the army in Yuma at the time and bought a 1964 Rambler American from him

I think Kimmie's taste is all in her mouth. This is a fabulous song by a singer that no one can compare to .. well, maybe Marty Robbins - but two different singers with two different styles. Thank you for posting this!
It was an old song because it was written in 1951by Lenordr and lowe for the Broadway musical " PAINT YOUR WAGAN" the movie didn't come out till the sixties. But it was written for the musical.
I love everything about this song. Hello 👋how is the pandemic going over there? I'm delighted to meet you here. Where originally are you watching from? I'm Patrick from NY USA
It is Harve Presnell, He played Rotten Luck Willie in Paint Your Wagon with Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood. He also played John Brown in The Unsinkable Molly Brown. You just might like it. Music is definitely all about what jives for you though. \m/
Yes I know I have copies of all those plus several others. But Frankie was in his eighties when he recorded this for his "Wheels Of A Dream" CD. I would have loved to have heard him do this number back in the sixties.
This song comes from a 1951 musical that didn't last long. in 51 the song hit the charts at #30 by the Mariners. Nothing else was done with the song until the Kingston Trio put it on a album about 10 years later. Then the movie came out in the late 60's then a lot of recordings of this song hit the market. I think many think he did it the sixties because the Kingston Trios lead singer sounds a lot like Frankie. If you dpn't think so just lisen to "Tom Dooley"
Well here we go again, I have collected the recordings of Frankie Laine since 1957 and I have everything he ha recorded since 1946 till his death. Great music, great song. Have been a fan of Frankie Laine since forever. Thank you for sharing this beautiful peace. It make me feel so wonderful. Brought back lovely memories. Do you have any more like this? God bless.
You can tell that Frankie was still mentally sharp at 85. He's not just reading words off the page. He definitely internalizes the song and projects its meaning.

If you google the song, it is spelled both ways. But if you look in any reference book on music and song titles, Lerner and lowe wrote the song in 1951 and I think they had the right to title the song what they wanted too. They titled the song "They Call The Wind Maria" So it doesn't matter what ledgen or other countries call the wind, The song writers called it MARIA.

Frankie Laine a truly great singer and a gentleman he appreciated his fans as much as they appreciated him
My mother used to sing this to me as a lullaby when I was a child, I've always loved this song.
Mine also!
Brilliant!! Not heard that for many years when I was a kid!!!!
Creating a collection of what I call Western Classics, I included this. Frankie Laine. Awesome!
He did the initial recording in 1950 - he did an entire album which my parents had and I always enjoyed. The original recording is even better because there's not all that back-ground effects in this version, and it's just his tremendous voice which was so outstanding!
One word describes Frankie. Great !
I totally agree,,,,, however "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" would work too!
I want to come back to earth with a voice almost as good as this. Nobody does what he does. Always loved you Francesco.... Always!

He's one of my singer heroes!
Love Frankie Laine for many years. He was in his prime 65 years ago when I was a kid.
This is the best song from "Paint Your Wagon," and one of Lerner & Lowe's best efforts.
Wow! I remember this song. This is by far the best version, I plan to buy the movie. Frankie Laine was a great singer.
He wasn't the singer in the movie . He said back then, you had to be invited to do a song. He wasn't "invited". So he did it anyway, when he was 85. A very great man.

@MrRhys2003 There was no singer like him then or now and I don't think there every will be again
