This video is about colors and how we might choose colors based on our surroundings or the emotional connection we have with it. Many artists have favorite go-to colors or color combinations they return to again and again. This is often due to personal preference and also depends on the mood they want to convey. For many landscape painters the colors are often influenced by the local landscape and the area where they live or places they visit.
We'll look at some examples of famous artists color choices and I'll ask you a couple of questions to get you thinking about your own color choices. Thanks for watching :)

love, love, love. your landscapes, your point of view, your calm inspiring way
Thank you for sharing, love each green and blue tone, always in my painting, my eyes are automatically attracted to blues and greens. When I was young I hate pink, but now I love to put pink or violet touches on my canvas. Love Impressionism style, specially Paul Cezanne and I’m looking to develop my painting in this style. Living in France. Thanks a lot
Mood. Absolutely mood. It can be the same subject, let's say a Seascape, if I'm in a dark mood, there's going to be lots of grays and dark blues, with hints of crimson perhaps, and definitely black and white. If I'm in a happy mood, the brightest colors that are available. Anything in the studio is a possibility. Just yesterday I tried a gold oil paint. I didn't care for it, but just had to make a go of it. Unbleached white is my newest favorite color. So many possibilities when painting skies. Cheers from New England
Unbleached white, very cool. Is that an oil color too?
@TheDanishPainter I was coming to ask the same.... I'm super curious about the color. So funny how certain things can peak our interest, sometimes something simple like hearing the words Unbleached White and having loads of colors or tints, I always get the vocabulary wrong, I'm sorry 🤦♀️😊 then I wonder what type, what brand and what would I use to mix to get close to it? Blah blah blah... but it's awesome to have fun things to think about like that :)
I find that I am influenced by the season, but if I have a desire to portray a certain mood, I will choose colors to suit that mood. As for trying a new color, I actually decided to try quinacridone crimson, which I tried because you did a recent video showing how you added it to some of your landscape paintings. As you suggested, used sparingly it's beautiful bright pink works so nicely on its own and mixes well with greys, blues and yellows. So much fun to try and was a nice surprise to discover. Thank you!
Love looking at your landscapes. We’re fortunate in New Zealand to have many choices of differing landscapes. All the best - from a New Zealander with danish forefathers
Hello over there in New Zealand 🇳🇿
Yes you really have such fantastic landscapes 💚 hopefully I’ll be able to visit . thanks for watching
Very good questions! My colour style changes more oft depending on my mood, but around a general range (mainly earth tones). As I thought more about your observations I found that seasonal changes do not influence my colour decisions. Regarding a preferred pigment: I almost always like to use Raw Umber on my palette, regardless of genre painted - it is SO versatile that I use it to create greens, browns and blacks in conjunction with other pigments. The last time I tried a new colour was quite a few years back: Helio Green Light from Schmincke Mussini. Your video makes me think that it is perhaps time to 'explore' the yet undiscovered part of the Oil Pigments map 🤔. Thank you for uploading yet another interesting video, and also for those live recordings taken from Nature at the end - it beautifully concludes the episode. 🤟
Thanks for sharing and for watching ☀️☀️
I tried brownish grey, silver and magenta newly. I use mainly prime colors, I rarely use pre-mixed paint colors. Nowadays I realised, I need innovate. :)
Brownish grey sounds like a lovely color. Thanks for watching
Thank you Marie Louise. Prussian blue is my favourite.
Prussian blue is a great color💙
Hi, my colours seem to change with the seasons. It's Autumn in New Zealand and I always use oranges, reds and more muted tones, than I do in the Summer. My favourite new colour is liquitex quinacredone burnt orange ❤
Wonderful! Thank you. Lovely painting, loved the light blue accents.😊❤
Thank you those questions are helpful 😊

Thank you! I just love your style. I love adding line work with pastels, graphite, etc. Are you working on raw loose canvas? The corner didn't look gessoed....
