Blackadder was a unique sitcom from the eighties, starring Rowan Atkinson. There were four series, each of 6 episodes plus three specials. Each was set in a different time period, medieval England, The Court of Queen Elizabeth I, around 1800 and in WW1. In each Atkinson plays a member of the Blackadder family, "helped" by a servant called Baldrick. It is one of the UK's most popular comedies. Atkinson is also famous as Mr Bean. Hugh Laurie who played George now pretends to be an American in many US films after starring in House.

Blackadder ran for 4 series, each in it's own time period, getting closer to modern times with each one.
It ended mostly because they'd run out of ideas but also because they'd run out of periods in time to portray (the final series was set in WW1). The final episode of that season though has gone down as one of the greatest moments in British TV history though. (It's called Goodbyeee if you want to look it up).

The last one was set in WW1 and the ending was truly emotive. I'm hoping when the plague of wokeness has been eradicated entirely from this world, new generations will see these shows and understand that it was simply funny. I cant believe that you don't know Rowan Atkinson, he is a world-famous British comedian, Known more widely as Mr Bean but Blackadder comes a close second. The whole cast are world-known Comedians and Actors, Hugh Laurie Tim McInnerny, Rowan Atkinson, Stephen Fry, Tony Robinson, Rik Mayall Miranda Richardson, Hugh Laurie and more. And you miss the point completely, It takes a look at the class system in the UK and laughs at it. Four different generations of Blackadders try to fight the system to get from middle class to upper class but each time Blackadders plans are thwarted by his superiors. And then Baldrick is the lower class and Blackadder pokes fun at the lower class, the common people, great comedy if you can understand the finer points of it. The Show was never canceled but ran its course. This has become a classic of British humour and the whole cast went on to other projects in Comedy and Acting

Blackadder was played by Rowan Atkinson best known for Mr Bean. George (Lt. in WW1) was played by High Laurie best known for Dr House. Tony Robinson was the only member of the cast who hadn't graduated from university, most from Oxford or Cambridge. Blackadder ran for several seasons starting in the middle ages when he was Lord Blackadder young son of the king, Elizabeth I when he was a member of the court, Georgian when he was the butler to the prince regent and WW1 when he was a Captain in the trenches. The first three series were all absolutely top-class…. and then they really turned the screws down hard with the final series - and if you reach the end of the final episode - and you’re still capable of speech and not crying your heart out - you’re either an alien lifeform - or an american - and I’d bet on the latter. Having sat through a load of american comedy starting back in the 60s - with the single exception of the unbelievably outstanding ‘MASH’ - I’d rather watch a tumble-dryer than an american comedy show. There’s only one other comedy series in the world that even gets close to Blackadder - and that’s ‘Allo, Allo’ - treat yourself - watch all of Blackadder and Allo, Allo - and report back!

As others have said Blackadder was never "Cancelled"... it's just that style of witty insults. It ran for four seasons, the main ensemble cast consisting of Rowan Atkinson as Blackadder, (Sir) Tony Robinson as Baldrick, Tim McInerney as Percy / Darling, Stephen Fry as Melchett (and briefly Duke of Wellington) and Hugh Laurie as George. Other recurring cast included Rik Mayall as Flasheart, and Miranda Richardson as Elizabeth. Being set initially in the Medieval period - Blackadder is a Prince; the second series was in the court of Elizabeth I - Blackadder is a Viscount (Lord); the third is during the Georgian Regency - George as in the future George IV - Blackadder is his Butler/Valet; the Forth series is in the trenches of the Western Front of WWI - Blackadder is a middle-class grammar school educated officer who's served for close to 20 years.
There were a couple of specials - a reworking of A Christmas Carol, which reversed the plot by making a philanthropic Blackadder into the sarcastic misanthrope of the series; a few sketches - one about the English Civil War, another a monologue of contemporary times of bringing Britain back to number one, by invading France. And for the Millennium, a story called Back and Forth - Baldrick accidentally creates a time machine. Hence their greatest hits, plus a T-rex and the Roman occupation.
These clips are from the third, fourth and Back and Forth.

Black adder is Rowan Atkinson, aka Mr. Bean. The other guy is High Laurie, aka Dr. House (yes the sarcastic Doctor with the cane). I was so surprised to find out he has a king history of comedy! You definitely should watch Blackadder as a whole. There are four series and each one is its own time period. You will love it!

The joke with the Roman sequence was that the higher the rank of the roman in the army the shorter the pteruges (skirt armour). So Stephen Fry's armour as the Roman General was extremely short.

Hugh Laurie who played George was in a medical drama called House as well as a lot of other things and Stephen Fry has been in so many movies and dramas you must have seen him. Tony Robinson who played Baldrick went on to do a lot of history documentys mainly in britain but some around the world.

Black Adder was never cancelled but it wouldn't be made today. Too many snowflakes would take offence at the humour. British humour is built on sarcasm, insults, innuendo and generally taking the ''P'' out of people and situations - very hard to do in the current climate of ''woke''. You recognise Rowan Atkinson (Black Adder) as he was also ''Mr. Bean'', a highly talented actor, comedian and writer.

Blackadder follows the original Blackadder and his two henchmen, and their descendants/reincarnations, through history, starting in the Middle Ages. There's a separate show/series with a single season of six or seven episodes per descendant/reincarnation: _Blackadder, Blackadder II, Blackadder the Third,_ and _Blackadder Goes Forth._ Absolutely anyone who hasn't watched all four shows/seasons should definitely do do. Anyone who has watched them should definitely watch them again.
Blackadder is played by Rowan Atkinson, most famous role is as _Mr. Bean,_ a title character of his own creation.
His henchman with a sense for hygiene, with changing names between eras, is played by Hugh Laurie, most famous for his role as the title character _Dr. House,_ though he's also known, especially in Europe, for his role as Wooster in _Jeeves and Wooster._
His henchman without even a concept of hygiene, always known as Baldrick, is played by Sir Tony Robinson, a truly astonishing actor, in film, series, theater, audio, and stand-up, who was knighted for his public and charity work.
Several other actors also play in more than one season/show, and absolutely all of them deserve praise, but I have limited time.

"Come tell us how you slew
Them old Arabs two by two
Like the Zulus they had spears and bows and arrows,
How you bravely faced each one
With your sixteen pound of gun
And you frightened them poor natives to the marrow"

Ahhh BLACK ADDER... A classic British comedy from the eighties. You were obviously taken aback with Lieutenant George dressed as a woman, the reason being that a concert party was organised for the troops with which Captain Black Adder was in charge of proceedings and George was the traditional drag act, which was common practice - and probably still is, although there are more real women in today's armed forces to fill a role - and he told jokes and sang popular songs of the time. I strongly recommend you view the whole series to understand the context of the clips you reacted to. The four series are set in different periods of history, with the first set during the reign of Richard III, the second during Elizabeth I reign, third series during the reign of George III (Hugh Laurie as the Prince Regent) and the fourth series set during WWI. There is also a millennium special: Black Adder Back and forth, where He and Baldrick go back in time, with wacky time lines thrown into utter chaos! All the series are based on historical fact, albeit with artistic licence for comedic purposes, obviously but gives the viewer an entertaining history 'lesson' of sorts. Some jokes and references you may not get, which is understandable being a British comedy but that's not too much of a problem really as it's fairly easy to follow. Give it a go anyway, as it's a very clever series with all sorts of farce and mayhem and general goofyness which in general, takes the Mickey out of all of us, with the goofy way we humans are. I hope this has been a bit of help to give you an idea of what goes on within the Black Adder dynasty! Cheers, all the best to you 😁 🇦🇺🤝🇺🇸

He didn’t seem to notice some of the actors who became huge afterwards.
The main guy - Rowan Atkinson is Mr Bean, one of the most recognisable comedy characters in the world
The Stuart Little guy is Hugh Laurie - known in the USA as Dr House MD
There is also Stephen Fry, presenter, debater and one of the most famous voices on TV
The bald German is Adrian Edmunson, a famous U.K. comedian and actor in very many shows and movies including Star Wars where he played Captain Peevey
The Small guy is Tony Robinson, Americans could be forgiven for not recognising him as he is known more on uk tv as a historian and presenter
And there is Tim McInnerny who played Robett Glover in Game of Thrones.

Glad you enjoyed this and got some of the jokes as they can come quick and fast. Backadder was a TV show that had each season in a different period of human history, it remains one of my favourites of all time and was not cancelled, just reached the end of its life as UK shows dont tend to just keep going and going like US ones do. Also this is nothing compared to Catherine Tates the Translator sketch (th-cam.com/video/XY66ZJ0TFUI/w-d-xo.html) or any of the little britain episodes.
Also the main actor you may know best as Mr Bean. Also the other guy from Stewart Little was as House (as House the doctor)

Blackadder was a much loved sitcom in the best vein of British comedy from the 80’s and early 90’s about a fictional dynasty through differed time periods: medieval, Tudor, Georgian regency and WW1.
Rowan Atkinson (mr bean) = all Blackadders
Hugh Laurie (house) = all Georges
    Tim McInerny = all Percys/Darlings
Miranda Richardson = Queenie/the black shadow/nurse fletcher brown
    Tony Robinson = all Baldricks
Stephen Fry = all melchets and Duke of wellington.
It was never cancelled as back then were all adult enough to have a laugh and respect free speech and freedom of expression unlike the facist dystopian world we inhabit today.
