Correction: Painting at 2:16 is by Mead Schaeffer, not Dean Cornwell. D'oh!

This is not only useful for painting and drawing. This is how art itself works!! If we read a novel, we don't need to know ALL the life of EVERY single character or what they're doing every second; we just need to know the things that complements the argument of the whole story. Same for the cinema. In music we don't need every single sound to play a melody on their own; even Bach (king of polyphony) guided our focus to a single important theme while the others just completed the MOOD of the piece. And I could continue talking about other disciplines of art, but I think my point has been settled. Thank you Marco!! :D Yours is a really great content youtube channel!!

Great advice! I like what you said about the frustrating beginning of a painting. Deciding on a subject and composition worth spending so much time on always gets me flustered and leads to me giving-up. Once I have the basics established, I'm more content to proceed even if I have to practice a lot in order to get it out.

I'm sorry to hear that man, how's your painting?
Also iirc Van Gogh had some vision oddities, and he has some of the most iconic and recognizable art of all time.
I guess I'm trying to say, restrictions breed creativity. I have a neurological problem that makes my hand shake, but my line art gets a lot of compliments because it looks so unique. Forces me to be loose and let shit go.

great insights, i think putting into perspective a set of ideas a lot of us artists inherently feel but havent really encapsulated and explored in the way we should so that we can consciously apply them. i see a lot of people who like comic/anime style drawing feeling really down about their art classes at college/university, the way they feel their teachers constantly making them do abstract work and not letting them draw cartoon schoolgirls with guns. what ur saying about all paintings being abstract is so true, theres things to be learned from abstract that then apply back to all painting, its reducing art down to the foundations of shape, value, composition that underpin every piece and when u get them right its hard to fail, and when u get them wrong it usually dooms the work.

Excellent video! While watching I thought to myself that when you're walking down a street you don't really see every detail and overlapping shape all the time, but rather a cropped and compressed state of the scene in front of you, depending where your eyes look at. One of the best ways I was taught to simplify thinngs was to squint my eyes. It actually opens up a two-tone world that I can translate into a design if I just move the shapes around.

Your lessons are great, I was trying to understand “this” for quite some time, but couldn’t quite find the right place to even start looking for it.

I've watch these videos a few times and it's like under-cooked spaghetti, not sticking. So I decided to treat these like courses and take notes. As simple as that sounds it helped a lot! So if your reading in the comments and having trouble understanding some of these concepts don't fret you aren't alone.

    Lol!!! memorable ending 🤣
If I’d even had ONE class in art school that had been this clear...
    Very valuable instruction!
It amazes me that you did the boat scene from imagination.

This concept is so rarely (or poorly) taught, I'd love to see you do other instructional videos that analyze merged shapes in master artworks. Great video!

What a wonderfully clear and thoughtful way of representing this idea of blending shapes. The end result was beautiful too, thank you for sharing! Subscribed!

A great tutorial, thanks very much Marco. You definitely have a point and I wish I could hammer your concepts into my painting.

Thank for providing these free lessons for the art community, you are awesome! Watching this video I also thought about the subject exposure, exposing for the light side or the shadow side, that is an interesting topic too :)

Yup, that's definitely a potential subject for a future video. We'll see!

I gotta say I am disappointed that this series is so new. So much thought has been put into conveyance that I just want to go through all of them right now. Other instructors can learn a thing or two from you in that regard. We need less rambly unedited videos of someone talking while they draw on youtube.

This is soo helpful and i feel like no one on youtube talked about that before... Thank you so much for this series of videos!

Finally, at least one of the thousands of teachers on TH-cam spoke in such detail about such a simple but at the same time fundamentally important principle in painting, finally I found a like-minded person, thanks)

This is educational on a completely different level! Really inspiring! You could infer a lot of additional information from this, such as why specific brushes aren't as important as the shape language - at least that's one thing that clicked (a bit) for me. I'll watch all of these episodes! Also subscribed!

Thank you! And great observation about the brush thing. That's totally accurate.

This is mind blowing! At 1:47 the shapes were combined but ended up looking more 3D! Amazing video lesson!

I wished I could have done what ya did in the ending with my family reunion a few weeks ago. Not. But it probably explains why I got so overwhlemed with over fifty people in one space. The lesson alone is worth gold to me. I will go and try it out on my worse subject, landscapes!

Another way to consider this is a way to create "focus", in the camera sense. Of course a camera has to do it, because of how light and lenses work.
But humans do it too with our eyes, when we look at something, the rest of the world becomes very simple. To my right at the moment is my PC, but all I really see is a blob of black, with a slightly lighter black towards the front (where light is hitting it).
Once I look at the PC case, the monitor becomes less defined, the red line on the youtube video really standing out, and the rest being just some grays and a mush of the "what to view next" images after the video. The monitor itself merges with the black desk and other dark objects on it. Above it there is some contrast between the wall and some pictures on the wall, but I cant make out the separate picture frames, just the general shapes of what's on them.
