    The second that rock landed on that guy’s chest, I actually blinked at the sight of it NOT killing him instantly. Seriously, something that hot and traveling that velocity would’ve at least burned deep enough to be fatal, right?

    • @stuckgrenadepin.225
      @stuckgrenadepin.225 3 ปีที่แล้ว +354

      The impact alone might not be enough to kill instantly, depends on the pressure of the volcano, velocity of flying debris. The heat, however, would kill very quickly. It would cause instant third degree burns to a very delicate area. The good news is that it would immediately kill all the nerves surrounding the injury site and he would feel no pain as his heart, arteries and lungs cook.

    As someone who studied geology and volcanology for two years at university, the lava situation is flat out impossible. First of all, lava (specifically lava bombs in this case) is incredibly dense. In fact, It is so dense that you can actually WALK on lava for short periods of time with enough safety equipment (Albeit that’s still an incredibly stupid idea). However, this density is what makes lava bombs so dangerous as well as makes this scenario impossible. If a lava bomb struck someone who was standing, the bomb would either:
    A. Create a puncture wound similar to that of a bullet if the bomb was small.
    B. Cave in the person’s body if the bomb was large enough.
    C. Bounce off. MAYBE leaves some burns if it lands on bare skin. Possibly lights your clothes on fire.
    What it will NOT do is impale itself in your torso and then calmly sit there like a parasitic leech

    As a blacksmith and someone who had done extensive casting.... if that lava was hot enough to melt those tongs on contact that fast it would’ve melted right through his chest almost immediately.
    Also they show it only being red hot, reasonable for some types of lava but only around 1200-1500 degrees, not hot enough to melt steel. Then they also show it heating the tongs to a bright orange low yellow heat, hot enough to melt steel.
    One rule of heat transfer, heat always flows from hot to cold. So assuming the magma is at the 1200 degrees it looks like, then it is physically impossible for it to heat the tongs up to a temperature higher than that. Not to mention that heat transfer takes time and you can dip steel tools into molten cast iron or copper 2800 and 200 degrees respectively, and they will not melt instantaneously. And those are molten metals which will transfer heat much faster than rock which is a poor conductor.
    But who ever said Hollywood ever researched the science behind anything.

    • @Vesperitis

    • @spacepraesidium2292

      @@Vesperitis It would not, most likely something that hot would melt instantly through skin but muscle is fairly resistant. Very low viscosity molten materials would just flow right off.
      Something like magma would have more time due to high viscosity. and would likely sit in one spot and do more damage... But it would not get stuck onto you.

      Or in the PNW, specifically the Cascade range. Where many of our volcanoes are. But I guess _Lone Star_ sounds cooler.

      @GreatBigRanz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not exactly. The geology is all wrong, while their are a few hot spots and thermal springs, they won't produce the necessary among of magma. Oregon and Washington however? We have the Cascadia Subduction Zone, an 800 mile long zipper that can not only produce some the most devastating earthquakes North America has every seen but fuels extremely explosive volcanoes. In fact starting in 1997 a chuck of land west of the the South Sister Volcanoes has been SLLLLOWWWWWLLLY bulging upwards, about an inch or so every year.

    Oh man, if this show was real, those 3 people would've been raked through the coals in courts for trying to get that shit out of his chest. The dudes still alive and awake after being pummeled by a flying rock going over 300mph and considering that looks like andesite its probably well over 1400°f and saw that dude walk up with a fire extinguisher

      I mean its a option but considering they are a FIRE SERVICE they have plenty of "relatively" clean water at hand, a pool has a bunch of chemicals and who knows what, that would be almost sure to cause a infection or other issues, regardless it wouldve been better than what they did, like they looked at him, decided to move him, cleared off a table, dicked around looking for forceps that then dripped molten metal on his chest twice and THEN went to a blade to flick it off of him and then stood there circle jerking and high fiving, in short, turn him over so the rock falls off or use your fire resistant gloves :D , don't bother moving him right away as the issue is going to kill him by the time you move him or at least cause enough damage to kill him in the long term (ie cooked organs), just turn him and let it fall off its not hard, then cool the area with water (prefer sterile but you do what you gotta do) and get him to a hospital and try to figure out what you are going to put in the report

    OMG, you crack me up every time with your evaluations of these things! Reminds me of my friend and I (back when we worked ER and ICU) and our husbands, watching movies with any medical scenes in them. We also critiqued what was done, laughing. When we did that during Robocop, both husbands told us they were never taking us to the movies again! 🤣🤣🤣

    • @johnharris6655
      @johnharris6655 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Bob Cinader, the producer for Emergency told his writers that every rescue or fire had to come from the logs of a real fire department. Randolph Mantooth said at first the writers thought that would make the show boring, but then they read the logs and said they could not make up some of the stuff real fire departments did. Mike Stoker, who played Engineer Mike Stoker on the show, was a real LA County Fire Department engineer. Mantooth said he was always telling us to dial it back because real firemen don't act like that.
