A fit problem most likely would be the pitches in the ball holes. Span could also be off.

Coach Ron, is there anything that will help me with my swing and release for my arm that has a lot of deflection? If I try to swing with my elbow pointing straight forward it throw my steps off because of the imbalance created from my ball being farther from my body. I can rotate my forearm in and get a good free straight swing but then with my fingers more on the outside of the ball I have a difficult time trying to get anything on the ball from that position. Is there a thumb pitch that would help any with this type of bowling arm?

I’m not sure I understand how that’s a fit problem. I have the same exact problem where my hand keeps breaking to the outside of the ball as I push my ball. Ever since I started bowling, I’ve always struggled with staying under the ball. I don’t have the strongest wrist either so that doesn’t help at all. I honestly think it’s just a bad habit when your hand moves after the push away, and it’s really hard to correct that habit. Does anyone have any tips on how to reduce hand movement during the push away?

With the crook of your elbow facing forward, keep your elbow close to your side and your ball in line with your shoulder throughout the swing. By tilting your hip slightly to the left and taking a crossover step, on your first step, this allows you to keep your elbow close to your side and the ball in line with your shoulder throughout the backswing and follow through. I found this kept me under the ball until release. I found if my elbow strayed from my side, my hand would have a tendency to rotate to the outside of the ball. Walter Ray Williams Jr., with this outside grip, is a 47-time PBA Tour champion and PBA Hall of Famer, who had a slight tilt and did the crossover step to clear the way for the ball, whereas Pete Weber had more of a hip tilt and no crossover. My average was 185 as a league bowler.

You should look at the Daria Pajak videos on her side view release in slow motion and her bowling drills-how to practice with purpose. I think they would be helpful to you. It gives you some great views on how she stays under the ball. She's had a lot of 300 games.

@@jakethehud that’s a good idea, but what exactly do you mean by tilting hip slightly to the left? Do you mean tilting my right side of my hip to the right and having my left shoulder higher?

@@Philycheeze222 No, the opposite. On a 4 - step approach, 65% of your weight is on your sliding foot, slightly apart and ahead of your right foot. Tilt your back slightly forward lower, lower your right shoulder 2-3 inches which will move your hips slightly to the left. Place the ball in front of your shoulder, just enough that someone behind you won't see it. Keep both shoulders square to the foul line. On a 4 or 5 step approach, the first step should be a crossover step, slightly more than a balance beam step, as this also helps move your body so you can have swing clearance. Keep your shoulder close to your side throughout the swing so that the ball will pass your sliding foot by about an inch. As I said previously, Walter Ray starts his stance with his hand on the outside of the ball, but when he starts his downswing, he then moves his hand under the ball. Look up Chris Barnes "setup and bowling stance" by USBC Academy on TH-cam. This should help. Also on TH-cam, watch "2 drills for a cleaner bowling release," by Inside Bowling, where #1 is foul line release and #2 is one-step release. The foul line release shows the shoulders square, right shoulder down with hips tilted to the left and then a pendulum swing. By practicing these two drills, once you have the correct stance, you should straighten out your problem. Still recommend watching Daria Pajak release/side view/bowling.

@@Philycheeze222 I came across 4 videos which I think will help you a lot. Two are the Kegel Drills Part 2 and Part 1 by Christopher Beck, the 3rd is "Bowlings crossover step, is it important" by JR Raymond and the 4th is "using your balance arm in bowling: by the National Bowling Academy. I think you should watch Kegel Drills, Part 2 first and then Part 1, as Part 2 shows front views on keeping the ball, head and shoulder in alignment. It shows the lowered right shoulder, the hip tilt and shoulder rotation, and it shows the crossover step. The only thing, I believe, that has changed a bit with this, is the balance arm. Turn the thumb down and bend the elbow, as this prevents your arm from swinging too far back which could cause you to pull the ball. So the 4th video is important.
