    Howdie USBC; my name is Steven Whitehouse. I am a disabled athlete. And started this past Monday I began practicing bowling with the Manchester Alley Cats of Manchester, NH at Spare Time in Manchester, NH. I will be watching these videos to improve everything about the way I bowl. In my first ever practice game with the Team. I scored a 163 (in 2 games). 93 for game 1, that i includes 2 spares. In game 2 my score was lower It was 70 with 1 strike. for a total of 163 (2 games). I will be practicing with the Manchester Alley Cats for the next (8 Mondays). The tournament is Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 1pm also at Spare Time in Manchester, NH. So I want to say thank you for these teaching videos. As I said, I will be watching them everyday so that I can improve my game.

    I was watching other bowlers recently to get an idea on how to bowl properly but I realized everybody is different. Everybody has their own style. So once I found what was comfortable for me I started bowling a much better game.

    My timing is something I've had to work on a lot. I would always get up to the line and the ball would still have a ways to go before release, so this is helpful to have. I'm getting way more serious about form and timing and stepped it up with a better ball. I ended up getting a really good app someone recommended to me so when I go bowling with my partner he can catch in slow mo how my form is. Practice makes perfect!

    Notice how he holds the ball higher for the slower throw and lower for the faster throw. Like he said it’s a matter of matching up the upper body and the lower body for optimal timing, but he wasn’t the best on explaining how. When you want to throw faster, you want to change speed with your legs because it’s more consistent to walk faster than to throw harder, and the that’s same with throwing slower because it’s hard to maintain consistent muscle tension everytime, and you want to be able to repeat shots and adjust. The old theory was that holding the ball higher for more swing would be more consistent. New theory is that if you want to throw the ball faster, stand farther back because you will naturally have larger/faster strides to get to the foul line, but you also want the upper body to match that timing. To do so when throwing faster, hold the ball lower since holding it higher or the same will cause the ball to be behind your feet and late since you’re walking faster. When wanting to throw slower, stand farther up to naturally slow your approach to the foul line and hold the ball higher because you will take longer to approach the foul line. If you don’t hold it higher, you might end up being too early in timing and having your ball in front of your feet when you reach the foul line. Also, you want to make adjustments holding the ball higher or lower by 6in. It is also the best to move back and forth by one foot length at a time.

    Low ball has less potential energy, so in order to have it swung higher, you need to pull it hard thru the bottom of the swing arc.
    What would happen, had you low ball and slow feet? Let me tell you. It wouldn’t swing and rise any higher than the initial push in the beginning, if you didn’t pull it hard.
    Far easier just to let the ball momentum work in favor for your high back swing. Back swing as high as the initial height at the start and let it swing freely.

    • @sven8633
      @sven8633 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Watching tons of videos where people are saying to relax and let gravity move the ball then have huge back swings and low push aways.
      In this video they talk about slowing down the ball speed and having a high back swing. That has to be done pulling the ball back. Coached are either skipping a piece of their coaching explanation, aren't being truthful, or have found a method to deny laws of physics

    • @PetSKi67
      @PetSKi67 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sven8633 , I think quite a number of coaches in many sports has only the sports spesific jargon to rely on and their own experience. Being a top athlete doesn’t spell understanding all the physical basics, why things happen, but echoing the phrases being said and in relation to their own execution.

    I'm confused because coaches usually teach letting the ball swing the arm (pendulum feel) to get a smoother swing, which is a great tip. I would think that holding your ball higher in the pushaway would cause a longer higher backswing and and a lower start position to shorten it. It seems to work that way for me when I raise or lower the balls starting position. 🤔

    Giving a nod to Coaches Ross and Borden in doing a great job in moving the sport of bowling back to legitimacy, I have to say it may be more helpful to some bowlers to have you experts develop and use a formal descriptive vocabulary. References to "high backswing" relative holding the ball "lower" for example is hard to mentally visualize without a good reference point. Yeah, I know he says "about waist high," but without an understanding of any relationship to high or low, people can get lost rather quickly. The same applies to folks using o'clock references to hand release positions without explaining the orientation or perspective. IMHO Bowling is a physical sport. The approach to using hard science that you guys bring is appreciated. The physics of launch and entry angles, rotation, axis tilt, velocity and data collection need to be supplemented with anatomy, physiology and kinesiology and presented in a uniform way that makes sense to folks looking to improve their game. Speaking in terms of crankers, strokers and tweeners doesn't help without a proper way to describe what those terms mean.

      HRYBCA : Very good points made.
      Proper use of terminologies and explanations of the science of bowling has always been a problem . There's many ideologies, approaches and techniques to an ever changing game. It can be quite confusing for a beginner or someone seeking advice.

    I’m not very good with ball comparisons but I do have a question or anyone that is good with this. I have a Motive Talon and I’m really looking to get something with more backend. I have more of a tweener style so I know I wouldn’t get as much hook as a cranked/two-handed.
    My question is what are some of the best balls out there for high backend hook?

    • @lanuishuman8573
      @lanuishuman8573 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a Motiv Rouge Blade. It has a very strong hook on the backend of the lane. I recommend it especially if you have a sort of tweener style. I’m a young two handler that is transitioning to a one handed tweener style as well. I definitely don’t use that ball for two handed though... it goes dead straight, hooks a bit then reacts extremely aggressively as soon as it leaves the oil... this is why I’m not using two hands anymore.😂

      hit the head pin at a 6 degree angle at 17 mph or 27.3 kph. you should choose a style that is the most comfortable for your body. ball should be held just above the waist, below the shoulders. you should walk at a natural pace.

    I didn't find this very helpful, except for the revelation that early timing leads to a drop, late timing to a hang-up which in 50 years of playing I hadn't grasped. However, some more tips about how to adjust your timing when it is off would be good.

      Me either.I thought the "misnomer" was Borden saying holding the ball lower gives you a higher backswing?That's impossible without forcing the ball into the swing.Which is exactly what I was taught NOT to do.I'm "old school"A "stroker".The arm swing is supposed to be loose,natural and unforced.But not in todays game.Not the way these guys teach it.It's all about dropping the shoulder and opening up the shoulder to create that high,forced back swing and revving the shit out of the ball.Wish I was 20 and just learning. :- (

    • @Brogers97
      @Brogers97 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeff Bear Jeff, you're right that it probably doesn't make much sense if you think about it in terms of old school bowling. This video is VERY good at showing how ball positions relates to swing height. You're right about one thing, if you hold the ball low and you create a highbackswing, there is some muscle involved. What they don't explain in this video is how as little muscle as POSSIBLE is used to create that high backswing, and then on the way down there is NO MUSCLE USED. That's the key. Once the downswing starts, the best players let gravity bring it down. I can guarantee that bowlers who have high backswings and use muscle on the way down are not as consistent. This method also relates a lot to spine angles, which is really important for staying consistent and balanced throughout the approach. Imagine having a high ball position to start AND a high backswing. It would be very unnatural in a lot of ways. Hope this helps a bit. :)

    • @jeffbear3075
      @jeffbear3075 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I've tried to open the shoulder and have a higher backswing.I'm too old and can't do it now.If I was 20 and just learning it'd be another story.Physically I'm struggling because of weight gain.And some issues that causes are making me struggle really bad right now.

    • @Brogers97
      @Brogers97 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If your body doesn't let you do it, there's no sense fighting it. There are many bowlers so have small, compact games that are very successful. Guys like Brian Voss, Norm Duke and Doug Kent are guys you should look at for hints on what do with your game. They all do the basics incredibly well and don't necessarily do anything 'fancy" with their swing. I hope that helps and I hope your game improves!

    I wish I could get a personal lesson from Fred Borden but I live in the Philadelphia area. Can you recommend someone reputable in the Philly area that I could go to? I did spend 5 days at the Dick Ritger bowling camp in 1999 and have held on to some of what I've learned, most importantly that an unusual 5-3 delivery works best for me. I'm now 66 years, have a 205 avg, and would like to have someone that knows what they are doing to help hone my skills for me.

    Super terrific video! This coach Borden is an expert. I had to replay sections of the video repeatedly on each style to be able to grasp all of the detail of his explanation. Readjusting my timing has been my most major and critical task recently. It has produced surprisingly great results but lack of understanding what I am been doing has prevented me from locking in on the proper form. This video helped me to understand what actions produces which results and given me more confidence in my direction. Anxious to get back on the lanes to put this learning to use. Thanks coach! Hope you got more videos out here on You Tube. I be looking for them.

    The first, Gregs(?) first shot was in time, but the examples are really out of timing.
    Low position at start would be in time with low back swing, were it neutral. Low start, high back is manipulating. Look at his steps and acceleration on the approach. He actually halts in between the acceleration phase of the approach to wait for the ball to enter the correct timing spot of his swing.
    Understanding, the mid approach timing check-point would benefit the mannekin as well as any bowler from beginner to major winner.
    The old person talking the video thru is really nobody to teach people how to swing a bowling ball. He is an expert on throwing the ball, but obviously doesn’t understand the basic physics of moving a heavy object.

    Anybody, how do you get a high backswing holding the ball low in the setup. I like to hold the ball low but I have a low back swing. I have to drop the ball from waist height or higher to get a high backswing
    Can anyone help?
    One last thing, surely the top priority in bowling must be accuracy, you never get many videos on how to actually aim the ball. How do you aim ?

      Hello,The solution to your low back swing woes is to open your hand up while the ball is in the back swing.Your thumb should go into a position that will point up at the ceiling when you are at the top of your backswing. So from your starting position, your hand will begin to move as you are entering your push away completing the turn at the top of your backswing. Now that you have a higher backswing it is imperative to not try and muscle the shot from the peak of the back swing down.Check out this video for backswing tips.www.usbcbowlingacademy.com/video/proper-bowling-arm-swing-005529/ Thanks for watching!

    ONLY 1 THING WRONG IN THIS VIDEO. A "MISNOMER" IS THE WRONG "NAME" FOR SOMETHING; e.g., "ROBBED" THE HOUSE VS. "BURGLARIZED" THE HOUSE. A MISNOMER IS NOT THE WRONG IDEA OR CONCEPTION. MISNOMER LITERALLY MEANS "BAD NAME".

    What's missing from this video is very crucial - his starting position. The faster he wants to throw it, the further back on the approach is his starting position. That is key aside from the ball placement in his starting stance. Good vid nonetheless.

    • @raeltalt
      @raeltalt 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I took a couple of lessons from the pro who was very adamant that I only use 4 steps, and to use that to gauge how far back from the line I should be when I start my run up to the release point. He also taught be that the steps should all have the same timing. This meant that I do a mental countdown while taking them.

    Sorry but this is just .... I dunno.... confusing ? Sean Rash and Chris Barnes don't hold the ball low down but they have good high back swings. Read Mark bakers book if you want a good clear explanation of timing. Also whats the deal with the chair ?? Why doesn't he just throw a ball and show us. Does he ever throw a ball come to think of it.

    • @christopherspringer7809
      @christopherspringer7809 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      trickcigar I have to agree with the "Read Mark Baker's book" comment. The centerpiece of understanding leverage and the swing according to Baker is where the ball and arm is positioned when the bowler's slide foot first touches the ground". Understanding early/late timing in relation to leverage is key to getting the roll you are looking for.

    • @lucidxchrist2133
      @lucidxchrist2133 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris Barnes and Sean Rash hold the ball high because thy are hingers. Hingers hold the ball higher because they don't push the ball away. Instead they either take 1 step and hinge if it's a four step. Or if it's a 5 step approach they take two steps and hinge the third step. Hinging you basically naturally let the ball get going in the swing with no push, key to the hinge is you don't want to drop it. But at the same time don't control it. Sean Rash holds the ball up high so when he hinges the ball will get natural momentum on it as it falls into the swing. Basically it's a way of getting good timing on your shots and what both Chris and Sean do equal out to a pushaway.
      If they didn't hold the ball up high and if they didn't hinge later into the approach they would be early to the line every time. Hinging you get the ball into the swing way earlier than you would in a traditional pushaway. When you hinge you need every bit of delay as possible.
